try something new: make peanut butter.

in how to,Uncategorized

i have had my food processor for two years now. marshall gave it to me on our second (dating) anniversary.

two years and i have never made my own peanut butter! that’s ridiculous… especially when you consider how simple it is.

step 1: buy nuts. this was a pound of salted + roasted peanuts, because we like salty, roasted peanut butter.

IMG_9919

step 2: dump nuts in processor.

IMG_9922

step 3: turn processor on.

IMG_9923

step 4: push nuts down with a rubber spatula if needs be.

IMG_9926

step 5: totally optional.. add oil. i only added 1/2 tsp of canola oil to get things moving a bit better.

step 6: let the processor run for a few minutes.

IMG_9925

step 7: admire your peanut butter.

IMG_9934IMG_9935

step 8: put it on a tiny condiment spoon so you can show everyone reading your blog how creamy it is.

IMG_9938

step 9: put it in an old peanut butter jar.

IMG_9940

step 10: eat it. duh.

i cannot believe how easy this was.. i am kind of mad that i have been buying peanut butter for the past two years.

Qs~

1. do you make anything at home that you previously purchased pre-made? marinara sauce, hummus.. and now, nut butter. i would like to make my own bread.. one day at a time.

2. what is your favorite kind of nut or seed butter? (not brand—kind.) i love maple almond butter.

I won 200 bucks to williams sonoma for some recipe contest and I had no clue what to get, now I think you got me sold on getting a food processor.

I’ve lately been all over hazelnuts. I think I’d make hazelnut butter with sea salt and dark chocolate. Or yea, I could just buy nutella…

But dont be mad for buying pb for so long. Skippy is still my crack of choice.

Janetha June 27, 2011 at 2:00 pm

WHAT? You should give it to me. Just saying.

Eden June 27, 2011 at 2:01 pm

come and get it!

Heather (Where's the Beach) June 27, 2011 at 1:53 pm

I make my own seitan now and keep in in the freezer. I do the same with my own veggie burgers as well. I pretty much try to make what I know I can make like hummus, spaghetti sauce, salsas, even bread (like french bread or pizza dough). Saves money plus you know what’s it. I’ve not tried making a nut butter though. I really should.

Cait's Plate June 27, 2011 at 1:55 pm

I make my own hummus and my own bread. I KEEP meaning to make my own peanut butter. I really need to get on that, my food processor is less of a food processor for not having processed peanuts ;)

I think my favorite kind is just plain old peanut butter. So boring I know, but there’s just nothing else like it!

Hilary June 27, 2011 at 1:59 pm

Crazy! I just made PB for the first time this morning! I used one pound of roasted unsalted peanuts, added a little sea salt, a tablespoon of honey, and let it whirl around in my Ninja. The result=amazing peanut butter for just under $2.50. I would love to make some sort of chocolatey creation in the future, but will probably make some cashew butter next. I have been reading about the health benefits of cashews but cashew butter is WAY expensive…not currently at Trader Joes :(

Kim @ Imperfectly Perfect June 27, 2011 at 2:24 pm

That looks delish and so simple to make! I definitely need to get my hands on a food processor. It’s on my “wants” list.

Jayme @ Runner-n-Spice June 27, 2011 at 2:45 pm

I also love almond butter, have not tried maple almond butter though.

I’m amazed at how easy to make that make-your-own PB looks!

Susan June 27, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Reason #20583 I need a food processor!

Holly June 27, 2011 at 2:50 pm

I make my own almond butter and it is soo awesome!!

Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn June 27, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Homemade nut butter is quite possibly the best thing on the planet. Sooo drippppy!!

lora June 27, 2011 at 2:51 pm

i need to def use my processor more. Last week I made a vegan basil pasta sauce and was so proud! next up? i need to make hummus.

xoxo

Aimee June 27, 2011 at 2:51 pm

You should try some other nuts now too – almonds, hazelnut. I made Jake’s mom some walnut butter for her birthday last year. Roasted some walnuts at home – just a bit, added a tsp of olive oil and some sea salt. She said it was fabulous. I didn’t try it as walnuts cause cankers in my mouth. So easy and yummy.

Janetha June 28, 2011 at 1:43 pm

I can’t eat walnuts, either! I like the idea of roasting the nuts myself, though. What temp did you do it at?

Aimee August 4, 2011 at 4:58 pm

I don’t remember other than I think it was low – like 250 or 300.

Janetha August 5, 2011 at 1:41 pm

Cool thanks!

dana @ my little celebration June 27, 2011 at 2:54 pm

I have tried lots of nut butter but I still adore peanut butter. It’s my favorite.

Things I make at home? Bread, english muffins, peanut butter, almond butter, pad thai, peanut sauce….I want to make fresh pasta sometime!

Janetha June 28, 2011 at 1:48 pm

English muffins–that would be fabulous.

Lindsay@ In Sweetness and In Health June 27, 2011 at 3:03 pm

Oh wow, I kind of want to try that asap :)

brandi June 27, 2011 at 3:05 pm

ugh, I SO need a food processor! You just can’t do this in a blender.

I love making bread at home – it’s so rewarding to have that fresh baked bread smell in the kitchen. Please try my farmhouse bread recipe – it’s so easy!

Favorite is probably salted almond or peanut butter. has to be salty!

Janetha June 28, 2011 at 1:49 pm

I actually starred that recipe! I must try. You are such an awesome baker.

brandi June 28, 2011 at 2:02 pm

aw, thanks! :) it’s super easy – I think you’ll love it!

Annette@EnjoyYourHealthyLife June 27, 2011 at 3:08 pm

I LOVE making my own nut butter. I love cinnamon almond butter (homemade)!!

Shannon June 27, 2011 at 3:13 pm

I’ve been curious about making peanut butter. I’ve tried other nut butters but I’m not crazy about them. The exception being Nutella. OMG that stuff is good!
I actually haven’t really tried making anything I used to buy pre-made. At least not what I can think of. On a very rare occassion I will buy a jar of tomato sauce (my grandparents would be rolling over in their grave!) and doctor it up a bit, but my whole life we’ve been making our own sauce. It’s sort of an unwritten rule I think for Italians to make their own sauce…

Lauren June 27, 2011 at 3:15 pm

My absolute favorite is sunflower seed butter and I can’t believe I haven’t made it myself either…I’m going to give some seeds a whirl in the food processor tonight to try it out! I do make homemade hummus from time to time but seeing it all packaged and flavorful at the market usually wins over me making it.

meghan n June 27, 2011 at 3:23 pm

now I REALLY want a food processor!!!

favorite kind; peanut butter with flaxseeds

Janetha June 28, 2011 at 1:49 pm

Oh I love that, too. Naturally More is a tasty brand.

Jessy June 27, 2011 at 3:31 pm

If it’s doable for me to make something at home instead of purchasing it pre-made, I try to do that. For example, I make my own tortillas and almond butter. Yesterday I made coconut butter and the next on my list is homemade ”Nutella”. :D

Lindsey June 27, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Yes, a lot of things! Pasta sauces, salsa, hummus, nut butter, granola bars, I have tried bread and well it was okay ;)

I love making peanut butter! White chocolate is my favorite to make!

Heather (Heather's Dish) June 27, 2011 at 3:54 pm

Holy. Yum. That looks better than any other peanut butter I’ve seen!

Jillian @ sprinkle massacre June 27, 2011 at 4:06 pm

I’m straight up salivating.

I’ve made almond butter before w/ just almonds, no oil or salt needed!

Felicia (Natural + Balanced) June 27, 2011 at 4:24 pm

i made my cousin a dark chocolate pomegranate peanut butter for christmas last year… that.was.amazing.

Alyssa @ Run Charlie Run June 27, 2011 at 4:27 pm

I always make my own pizza dough now and started getting dried beans instead of canned. Not sure that counts but totally worth it.

I like butterscotch peanut butter and cinnamon peanut butter. yumyumyum

Tessa @ Amazing Asset June 27, 2011 at 4:49 pm

Since I bought a food processor a few months ago, I have been making nut butters like no ones business! I haven’t tried hummus or sauces yet, I ought to though
I agree with you on the Maple Almond butter, drool… I also like cinnamon or vanilla flavored nut butters. Anything with a sweeter taste!

Lindsey @ Cardio Pizza June 27, 2011 at 4:52 pm

Favorite nut butter…I think peanut butter is my favorite…especially with a bit of honey. Yum!

I like to make hummus with the food processor, it’s so easy and delicious!

Erica June 27, 2011 at 4:59 pm

You MUST make bread! I have a bundle of easy peasy recipes- let me know if you’d like them :) Your nut butter looks so yummy. I’ve made cinnamon walnut butter- very tasty. BUT, I’m usually just lazy and buy it. Same with hummus. Hope you’re having a wonderful Monday

Janetha June 28, 2011 at 1:50 pm

YES, send me your easiest!

melissa@the hungry artist June 27, 2011 at 5:21 pm

I make my own almond butter, which I love!
But the Peanut Butter at TJ is so cheap, I buy theirs…

Janetha June 28, 2011 at 1:50 pm

Wish I had a TJs!

candice June 27, 2011 at 5:35 pm

Yes, so simple.. yet I can never get myself to do it.. I always gripe that smiths marketplaces pb/ab grinders are broken… and go days without delicious nut butter.. now I just need to do it myself.. haha!

Michelle @ A Voracious Appetite June 27, 2011 at 5:40 pm

Yay for making your own peanut butter! Isn’t it amazingly easy? It’s one of those things you’ll never buy again. I love making honey roasted peanut butter. I roasted the nuts in honey and then grind it all up. It’s seriously the BEST nut butter ever!

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga June 27, 2011 at 5:47 pm

1. do you make anything at home that you previously purchased pre-made? = I make nut butter all the time. Cashew butter is really easy and I also add chocolate to it. I have a divine recipe for choc coconut cashew butter on my site.

2. what is your favorite kind of nut or seed butter? = PB and SFSButter. A tie.

Naomi(onefitfoodie) June 27, 2011 at 5:48 pm

I have to say I just got hte trader joes almond butter with flax seeds and it is FABULOUS! i think the flax seed adds that amazing crunch and little extra flavor that I adore

I made PB once but did not use enough oil to get it ‘movin’ in the processor and it turned out to clumpy :( yorus looks PERFECT!

Pure2raw twins June 27, 2011 at 6:07 pm

as much as love making homemade almond butter, it can be pain, haha

i have been on macadamia nut kick lately ;)

Carey @ Positively Blonde June 27, 2011 at 6:08 pm

I’ve never made any of my own products like this. but I am feeling very inspired to make some PB now that I see how easy it is!

Lauren June 27, 2011 at 6:26 pm

I am still amazed that I have yet to make my own nut butters. What is wrong with me? :) LoL

Chels June 27, 2011 at 6:32 pm

I sometimes make home made salsa using my processor…I need to use it more often then I do. I love Cashew butter, but I would have to say Peanut Butter is my all time fav!

Ashley @ Will Run for Food June 27, 2011 at 6:35 pm

I’m loving sunflower seed butter right now…but I go through stages! There’s nothing better than a honeycrisp apple with maple almond butter in the fall. Yum!

Kelly @foodiefresh June 27, 2011 at 6:40 pm

I made raw coconut almond butter a few months ago that was soooo delicious. And just yesterday I made sunflower seed butter which turned out pretty awesome as well. You PB looks yummy! :)

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey June 27, 2011 at 6:43 pm

For some reason I like storebought better – hummus too. I’m a freak I suppose.

julie June 27, 2011 at 6:46 pm

i’m so lazyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Becky @ The Bex Factor June 27, 2011 at 6:54 pm

Really…..peanuts and oil??? That’s all it takes?? Gosh I almost wish it wasn’t so easy because pb is my addiction and this is going to make it all to easy to feed.

I wonder how easy homemade nutella would be then?

lynn @ the actor's diet June 27, 2011 at 7:41 pm

i think it’s awesome you made peanut butter! i always think about doing it myself, but ultimately – as with everything in my life – i get veeeery lazy. and sidetracked by all the pretty jars on the shelves!

BroccoliHut June 27, 2011 at 7:47 pm

I’m like you–I make my own hummus & pasta sauce, plus salad dressing too (with the exception of Goddess dressing!).
I don’t have a food processor, so I think nut butter will have to wait for the future!

BroccoliHut June 27, 2011 at 7:47 pm

Oh, and I love sunflower butter the best these days :)

sarah (sarah learns) June 27, 2011 at 8:02 pm

i just made my own cashew butter! :) i got a food processor a couple weeks ago at my bridal shower & i’ve made almond butter, cashew butter, peanut butter, and pesto with it! :) next up: hummus!!! oh yeah, and banana soft serve!

Errign June 27, 2011 at 8:04 pm

I make: marinara, hummus, falawesome, and nut butters.

My favoritest nut butter ever is peanut but lately I’ve been loving on homemade chocolate PECAN butter.

Lauren June 27, 2011 at 8:28 pm

I have a random Q about your food processor: is it really loud? I bought one recently to make nut butters (granted, it was cheap), and it is SO LOUD I can’t even be in the kitchen at the same time its working. I think I’ll ask for a nicer one, but I’m not sure I can handle it being super loud!

Janetha June 28, 2011 at 1:57 pm

It’s loud.. but not like a blender loud. More just a whirring sound.

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) June 27, 2011 at 11:07 pm

Remember when I went thru that nut-butter making stage of my life? Wow, I think I OD’d b/c I only just made some more last week! (It took me that long to get thru it all despite the fact that I gave away 90% to other people as presents).

Hazelnut butter with roasted hazelnuts from the persian store- we’ll go there when you visit in the fall FOR SURE.

Janetha June 28, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Yes I remember! You make the best. Can’t wait to go to that store!

Hope June 28, 2011 at 6:09 am

I cannot wait until my fiance and I register for our wedding. A food processor will most definitely be on the top of my list! That peanut butter looks fabulous! I want to try making my own! :)

Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli June 28, 2011 at 6:22 am

It’s hard to believe I owned my food processor for TWO YEARS before I even took it out of the box! What was I thinking? I’ve made my own marina sauce, hummus, nut butter, and bread in the past, but lately, I’ve been uber lazy and have just been buying it from the store! :-/

Favorite nut butter: plain coconut butter…straight up…spoon to mouth!

Janetha June 28, 2011 at 1:58 pm

You just made me feel so much better about my procrastination issues.

I have NEVER had coconut butter. I have a bag of coconut waiting for me to make some.I have had it for a month. Yes, there I am procrastinating again.
