holy crud. it is a good thing birthdays only come once a year, because i am birthday celebrationed OUT.
i consumed a ton of ice cream. i ate out at restaurants more frequently than i cooked meals at home. i seriously neglected my insanity workouts. i totally forgot to drink water. i didn’t take a single vitamin or supplement. BUT– i made lots of fun memories.. and i don’t regret a single bit of it!
i am never opposed to breaking away from my usual healthy meals and regular exercise if there is good reason behind it—birthdays and vacations are two reasons that come to mind. but when all the fun times are said and done, i am always ready to get back to clean eating and regular exercise. my body tells me “GET WITH THE PROGRAM, JANETHA!”
smart body.
this morning i woke up and thought about my weekly monday morning sales meeting at the original pancake house. the thought of eating at a restaurant made me a little sick to my stomach. i wasn’t super hungry and all i wanted was a protein shake.. so i listened to my cravings and skipped out on the breakfast meeting.
i had a delicious berry protein shake on my way to work.
i know you don’t need to see a boring photo of my shake, but i love this bottle and need to express my joy. it has the capacity to hold my whole shake and it has a built in straw. i got it at target. get one.
this shake had:
- 1 cup skim milk
- 1 scoop vanilla pea protein powder (my current favorite)
- 1 cup frozen raspberries
- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
- ice
- 1/8 tsp xanthan gum
this clocked in around 300 calories, 35 grams of protein and 39 grams of carbs and no fat. surprisingly, it kept me full for five hours.
here’s a story. i usually put both xanthan and guar gum in my shakes. i have two little jars that sit on my counter for easy access. today i was in a rush and the guar gum jar slipped out of my hand and shattered on the kitchen floor! guar gum all over the floor.. and all over my clothes. i had to change my clothes and luckily marshall is awesome and swept up the mess for me so i wouldn’t be late. i am an idiot.
moving on!
lunch involved leftovers and veggies.![]()
a pulled chicken sandwich with romaine and trader joe’s sweet & hot mustard, a whole orange bell pepper and three baby cucumbers.
i am not typically a fan of sandwich thins (bagel thins are another story, love those) but i do like to use them as a vehicle for pulled chicken, as long as they are toasted. toasting is KEY. i am all about hearty, delicious bread when eaten by itself or in an amazing sandwich, but when the bread isn’t that important, sandwich thins are a good low calorie option for me. if i could eat a 300 calorie bun and get away with it, trust me, i would. but it’s bikini season, folks, and i am not ashamed to say i eat something because it is lower in calories than the alternative. good talk.
my contigo water bottle has been my best friend today!![]()
so has the toilet. i think i drank nearly 1.5 gallons of water today.
as i mentioned above, i have been neglecting shaun T just a bit this past week. i missed insanity on tuesday, friday AND sunday. now, that doesn’t mean i wasn’t active.
i rode my bike 4 miles uphill (and 4 miles downhill) on friday, i ran a 5k on saturday (my designated “rest day” for insanity) and i walked a bunch on sunday. it all balances out.
however, i am taking this insanity challenge seriously and intend on extending my finish date by three days. i don’t want to skip even one of the workouts. when i had the flu, i put the challenge off for a week, but picked up where i left off. and that is what i did again today.. picked up with the insanity workout i hate the most! yippee.
it was HARD. i did it. but.. yeah.. IT WAS HARD. i earned that slash today.
it will be nice when i am able to cross that very last day of the challenge off, knowing i did EVERY SINGLE workout.. even though it will take a tad longer than originally planned.
a few of you have asked what my plans are for after insanity. i will be going back to body for life style workouts. they never fail me and i want to work on my upper body strength this summer.
i kind of forgot how to cook dinner. i definitely forgot how to meal plan and grocery shop.. our fridge and cupboards were bare! i managed to scrounge up some ingredients for a tasty, nutritious dinner.
the stars of the show: whole wheat noodles & jarred cacciatore sauce.
for protein, i diced up a block of pressed extra firm tofu..
tossed it in some olive oil, TJ’s 21 seasoning salute, dried oregano and garlic powder..
laid it out on a sheet pan and broiled it on low for about 7 minutes on each side.
while the noodles cooked, i tossed the tofu into the simmering sauce and let it heat through before serving.
such a quick and easy dinner for two! this cacciatore sauce from trader joe’s is a keeper. a side of steamed cauliflower and broccoli rounded out the meal. this was actually my first time eating broccoli since i barfed a bunch of it up during my bout of the flu a few weeks back. not to worry—i kept it down the hatch.
in other news, i think i need to do a few days of no added sugar to kick this sweet tooth of mine. after a week solid of lots of birthday treats, i have fallen back into the habit of wanting a sweet something after my meal. it is crazy how quick that urge can come back. however, i know that if i go a few days without the added sugar in my meals, those cravings will go away.
i will more than likely have some protein chocolate milk for a night cap—sweet but healthy!
after just one day of being back to “normal”, i feel better already.
the sluggish feeling is gone, i am hydrated and have renewed energy from my much needed intense sweat session.
it goes to show that taking a week off from the norm isn’t going to kill you. in fact, it just might make you stronger.

i admire your dedication to your workouts!
After a few consecutive days of sweets it’s hard to stop! Taking about a week off sweets always helps me reign it back into normal.
I feel the same after b-day celebrations….ready to get back in the groove. But that is what makes the celebrations celebrations<—diff from normal! hah.
And yah, that sweet tooth comes back with a vengeance every time. UGH!!! :(
I think our bodies are great at telling us “danger will robinson! eat healthier!”. After consuming WAY too much cake for my birthday the other day, all I wanted was healthy foods and loads of water.
Great post. I especially loved the guar gum story. Ha. I hate it when stuff like that happens. Glad you had a good birthday week, though. I can’t wait for mine in July already!
i never thought i’d say this, but the insanity workout and/or P90X are closing in on some of the workouts I really really really want to try…too bad they’re pricier than i can afford right now! probably better that way though :)
Umm…Protein Chocolate Milk? Simple as it sounds? I must try this delicious sounding creation….
Oh yes. Easy peasy.
Love that feeling after you get back to normal after being off track for a few days. :)
That tofu looks AMAZING! My husband hates tofu but I think I am just going to have to keep trying to convince him that it’s delicious! :)
You just have to find a way to cook it that he will like! THere are so many ways, there is bound to be one he likes…
So…I realized the other day I keep copying you. I tried BFL for awhile, I’m doing Insanity, and I’m doing a “no sugar added” month. I swear I’m not trying to be a copy cat but I guess you inspire me! I’m not as diligent with my Insanity (but not terrible I probably do it 5 times a week not 6) so I keep having to extend my end time but I’m still plodding through.
And hey….a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
hehe. copy cat. i love you!
I totally agree that it’s so easy to fall back into the something sweet after every meal cravings! That’s definitely one of the hardest urges to kick for me when I’m getting back on track!
I had a celebratory weekend as well, so I know how you feel. Now i am doing final exams, and I never eat well while studying for those! My body is complaining.
i celebrated my birthday a few weeks ago & felt the same, just plain blah!
i go my grove back after a few days!
I have pulled chicken leftover-envy! Aaaah! :-)
Happy Bday (week!) and yes, sugar makes you want more sugar and treats make me crave more treats…I am with you on that. But sometimes, I dont care lol
Glad you had fun while it lasted but now you’re listening to your body’s needs. Good for you!
Yes, taking a week off is actually sometimes pretty beneficial! It can restore your power, your energy, your motivation and your workouts/healthy eating/lifystyle changes get a good “kickL when you are back to them :)
I’m so proud of you for completing the Insanity challenge. Well, being close to the end anyway. That thing is no joke!
Have you tried Lean Dessert Protein powder? Their flavors are SO delicious!
YES! i have the cinnamon roll and the banana nut bread, but i want to get the coconut one. yum.
love the “X’s” on your calendar – sooo satisfying to check accomplishments off with a visual reminder.
way to get back on track – celebrations are fun, but it’s nice to return to day-to-day routines, too. love that tofu supper recipe!
Ah, oh no! Gu Gum all over the floor sounds like a disaster. That stuff is so expensive too, I think I would have cried. At least the rest of your meals made up for it. Mmmm, dinner especially. :) Hope you have a great day today!
I totally know that feeling! A day of healthy eats, lots of water and a solid workout always does the trick! Love your smoothie bottle from Target. And I must get my hands on the trader joe’s sweet & hot mustard. Hope you have a good Tuesday
You make that tofu look really appealing…I wish I had a TJ’s nearby! I’ll have to try some other spice blend.
Oh my goodness I would FREAK out if that happened to me!!! Guar and xanthan make a really weird coating when they get wet, that must have felt so icky :(
i wish i had a TJs nearby, too! that is like my #1 wish. if i found a lamp and rubbed it and a geenie came out, that is what my first wish would be.
I’m with you on the sandwich thins — they are ok toasted but that is it! Otherwise they just taste so strange to me.
I love that you are sticking with Shaun T and will finish the program 100%!
Sandwich thins do taste much better toasted! I have to agree with you on that one. I never knew that TJ made a Cacciatore sauce. I’m going to have to buy it and try it. I also want to try that 21 Seasoning Salute. I see you use it a lot. I’m interested in trying it :)
You should! it makes everything taste better. I bet it would make a shoe taste good.
i think you’ll be peeing out those sugar toxins in no time, haha. Time to hit the refresh button. But such a good week, no regrets. You savored life!
Cheers,
LC
Re: the great guar gum spill of 2011, be on the lookout for leftover gu,m around….I spilled some guar gum in my silverware/knife drawer a few weeks back and I had to take every single utensil out of the drawer, wash them, wash the drawer twice, and then dry and replace it all. Guar gum is a sneaky gummy guy-everything was all gooey!
ughhh i know, it is so gummy and gooey! reading this made me glad it didn’t go in my drawer..
I was gonna say the same thing- it is actually horrible WHEN it gets wet! You’ll have to get major soap action to get it off the floor (mop it like 64 million times!)
All the same, though, I love it! And today I got my first xanthan in the mail! Just gotta be careful not to dump the jar! :)
Woo-hoo for letting lose and enjoying your b-day, but also being motivated to get back on track this week.
Sweet endings to a meal will probably always be my downfall. I think it stems back to childhood where my mom and I shared popcorn and Hershey’s kisses or ice cream every night for dessert. :)
way to improvise and find pantry items that could add up to a healthy & delicious dinner :) you are my hero. haha.
xox.
Love your tofu pasta! I notice my body craving more sugar repeatedly after a big indulge too.
Truth that our body tells us what it wants – we just have to listen! And sometimes the body wants birthday week treats, so I’m glad you aren’t beating yourself up : )
Such a great way to cook tofu – BROIL it. haha!! I have been cooking tofu for some time now and always just bake it – which takes FOREVER. I have no clue why I never thought to broil it! Anyway, thanks for the tip. Glad your back to ‘normal’!!!
I learned this from Mama Pea–it is SO MUCH FASTER!
love your attitude! getting back on track after an indulgent/off couple of days is always my favorite feeling. :)
I have been craving pulled chicken like crazy! It looks delicious : )
Good for you for getting back into the swing of things. Glad you had a good birthday week! =)
I’ve been in the “non meal planning” funk for a while. this hot weather just makes me not want to do ANYTHING!
ps: i love the bday card you posted – so cute!
i personally think you are doing awesome with insanity! It is no easy task to dedicate yourself every day to one program. You’ll make it!!!
Thanks for the water bottle recs…I like both of those! I’m thinking I saw the Contigo one at Target as well?
Yes! I have seen them at Target!
I had something to tell you, but by the time I read through the post, I forgot. Eff. Blonde moment. Anyway, here is us: http://www.zazoosh.com/photos/425850206
xoxo
I wonder what it was? And yesss, saw that photo earlier. Ha.. such a flattering angle of me..
Sounds like a good balance between celebrating and being healthy! It’s great that you’re able to jump right back into your healthy habits after having some fun :-) Good luck with rest of Insanity!
Just got over the flu myself… def NO FUN. Esp since I was on vacation :l I ate my first big bowl of veggies, seitan & quinoa yesterday and all systems are go :) Glad you enjoyed your birthday (week).
Glad you are back to normal eating. I am not sure I was quite ready for the broccoli yet…
I HAVE A HORRIBLE SWEET TOOTH AFTER MEALS!
I had to share that. I love the feeling of jumping right back into a healthy lifestyle after having a few days of indulgence. It is so refreshing and reminds me of all the extra energy I get from my workouts and meals!
Great post!
great post for getting back on track – it’s so important to just pick up where we left off & i truly admire your dedication to your workouts & eating plans. it seems that when you san you’re going to do something, you do it. balls to the walls, girly! you’re awesome!
Aren’t the powers of sugars crazy?! I notice the same things after just a few days of having desserts after dinner.
protein chocolate milk sounds awesome for a night cap! have you ever made protein fudge?!?! Oh Janetha you MUST if you havent had it before! just a scoop of protein, mix with some water to make it a paste (I add nut butter as well–just about 1 T for some healthy fats before bed) freeze it until it gets super pudding-like but not frozen and ENJOY!
the pasta with tofu is an awesome idea, and I notice you always make it for you and marshall! i havent had tofu in SO long, and forget what a versitile form of protein it is!
xoxox
I felt the EXACT same way after my birthday!
I did the same thing with Insanity- good for you for sticking it out to the last workout, though! And that particular workout is my least favorite, too…so painful. I haven’t seen that cacciatore sauce at TJ’s- looks good!
Good for you for getting back into the groove of things. It can be tough.
That tofu looks so yummy.
Happy birthday!!
My birthday somehow always lasts a week. Not that I’m complaining but it usually means a lot of eating and after a week I need a break!
I know the great feeling of getting back on track! Looks like you didn’t really forget how to throw together a killer healthy meal :)
also what low sodium turkey or chiken do you get or were ?
Thanks
I buy Columbus brand low sodium turkey at Costco.
I definitely felt the need for a detox after my last birthday- it was actually kind of disgusting how much I ate the week of my birthday!
Ahhhhhh Janetha, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new layout– looks FANTASTIC! I know I am way late, but I wanted to tell you that’s awesome :)
& you have no idea how much I have missed you & your blog! I’m so glad that you had such a good birthday week- you deserved it :D
Love you! xoxo
I hear ya on the detox! I had a three day wedding celebration for a friend and there was lots of drinks, eating out, and cake. I came back on Sunday feeling 10 pounds heavier. It felt so great to get back into the routine on Monday of eating normal and getting in some physical activity.
I did my first Insanity workout today, wow it totally kicked my rear! I have so much respect for you for sticking with this for two whole months. I am just looking to add some high instense cardio workouts into my routine a few times a week, this for sure exceeds my expectations of high intense.
