it had been a year since i ran my last race. it was the pride 5k in 2010. flashback photo!
yesterday, kristen and i ran the pride 5k again.. and emily joined us!
we didn’t take a camera with us.. so no photos this time around. actually, this time around was a lot different than last time.
aside from not caring about photos, i also didn’t care about how i did in the race. i don’t even know my finishing time. i didn’t wear my heart rate monitor or my watch, two things i used to never run without in the past. actually, kristen looked at my wrist and was surprised i wasn’t wearing it.. but before she pointed that out, it didn’t even cross my mind. in fact, i am not really sure where my heart rate monitor and watch are at the moment..hmmm. anyway, i didn’t train for the race.. well, not that a 5k takes a whole lot of training.. but the last time i ran was in march. i have been doing the insanity workouts for two months now and haven’t run once since i started. basically, i went into this race not caring a single bit about anything except hanging out with some friends and seeing some cute dogs.
while the race was a good time and i enjoyed hanging out with kristen and emily, i realized that i wasn’t really into it.
sorry, running, i’m just not that into you.
is that taboo to say here in blog land? running is so popular. it seems like everyone is always talking about training for, running in or reflecting on a race.
i don’t like races. paying to run? not for me.
i used to think i would be a big race participant. i will admit, i have always had fun when i have done races.. but i think it was more because of the company i was with rather than the running itself. the experience of a race is fun! it’s always nice to finish and get that feeling of accomplishment. but honestly.. it’s not something i am crazy about. i won’t be paying to run in a race any time soon, that’s for sure.
now, i am not saying that i will never run again. of course i will! running is one of my favorite ways to do HIIT. i prefer doing HIIT because it lasts 30 minutes.. max. i will run because it is good for me and i like to be healthy and active.. but if i have the option to run or do some other form of exercise, that other form is going to win 100% of the time. the thought of running for more than thirty minutes kind of makes my stomach churn. it just seems so boring.
so, that’s that. my latest and greatest thoughts on running. it’s okay to not like a form of exercise, guys. there are lots of ways to stay in shape! just pick one that appeals to you.
moving on..
today we celebrated gay pride all day long. we started things off this morning with the pride parade.
roseanne barr was the grand marshal of pride this year!
the pups were with us.. they were so happy to get out of the house.
the parade was definitely entertaining and there was lots of awesome people watching. my favorite sport.
it was HOT! finally! it has been cold all year. luckily the boys and pups found a bit of shade.
after the parade i had to go to the store and buy some shorts. i was wearing jeans and was too damn hot. after my quick wardrobe change and sucking down an ice coffee, we headed to the city center for the pride festival. like i said, gay pride fun all day, folks.
we wandered around and checked everything out. it was packed with people. i was a tad claustro.
marshall and i found some gear that was MADE for us:
we are definitely a dogs-for-children family.
time for food! i had had a protein shake for breakfast at about 9 AM and it was about 2 o’clock by the time we decided to eat lunch. there were lots of different food stands.. i went with a catering company that was selling paninis.![]()
hmmm.. i thought for sure paninis were pressed sandwiches, but they seemed to think they could pass off a focaccia sandwich off as a panini. that’s ok, it was delicious.
marshall got a navajo taco.. which is a huge piece of fried dough topped with meat, beans, lettuce, sour cream, salsa and cheese.
it is traditionally eaten with a knife and fork, but marshall had no knife.. so he ate it like a taco.. um, this makes SO much sense.
jessica had fried ice cream.
it was vanilla ice cream wrapped in a brownie dunked in batter and fried, then covered in chocolate sauce. yes, please.
you better believe i had my fair share of that tasty treat.
after we were all prided out, marshall and i headed to my parents’ house for a joint celebration of mine and my brother’s birthday. since this post is already incredibly long, i will keep this part short.
momma b prepared the whole delicious feast!
the menu included..
pulled chicken~
pulled pork~
swiss cheese + red onions for the sandwiches~
green salad~
corn~
my plate~
i love pulled chicken. in fact, i used it 5 different ways in 5 days once upon a time. it’s so good!
it was a race to the finish with the corn on the cob.
we are big corn eaters in our family.
now marshall and i are finally home, sitting on the couch, enjoying these last few moments before another work week begins.
hope you all had a good weekend!
Qs~
1. do you like running? if so.. do you participate in races?
2. do you like parades? marshall haaates parades. super surprised i was able to rope him into going today.

Hate running. Love parades. And your friend Jessica has really hot curves. Just sayin’. :)
Thanks ! You’re so sweet, Christin. I hate running too :) That’s how I got those curves, HA! ;)
I think that’s how I got mine too! :D
I love to run and I love to race! But I totally understand people who don’t – I was one of them for a long time. I’m thinking about doing the Big Gay 10K in SF this fall – love the idea of a pride race!
I would say that the gay pride 5k is one I will still do, simply because it’s so fun to see everyone! And there were a bajillion dogs in tutus.
Not a huge fan of running. I pretty much only do it when it comes packaged with something else that is cool (triathlon, warrior dash, running for the ice cream truck…).
Now parades I love. They are usually fun and even more so for the people watching.
Aw, today was so fun!!! I had a ball and a gay ole’ time <3
i have a sunburn. it hurts. i should have found some delicious smelling sunscreen like you did.
I am with you. Running is NO fun.
Hated running until a year ago feel in love with it..Its more about the people but participating in events is fun if you are wanting to challenge yourself. Sure anyone can go run 26.2 but I can’t run my fastest 26.2 unless I’m at an event. I love everyone equal even if you don’t like running;)
I only run if it is 20 min or less. Actually make that 10min.
Pride weekend looks like so much fun!!!!!!!! I wish I could have been there for the Parade!! My goal is to someday go to the huge San Fran party day/street festival/ whatever and have a ball!
YUmmy eats too!! I’d be all over that pulled chicken! :)
happy week Janetha!!
love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
I like to run, BUT only when I feel like it :) I have done several races and they were a blast, but I am not obsessed. at. all. I much prefer dancing!
Parades are okay if it is NOT blazing hot.
And I WANT that treat you all had, looks ammmmazing!!
I kind of like running… I’m trying to get into it more. Today I did a 5K while my sister did the half-marathon, and I’m glad I only had to brave it though 3.1 miles. I think my biggest problem is that I get too bored and nauseas, but I think it’s the effort that counts :)
And I love parades! Especially the Rose Bowl Parade in LA!
Oi, looks like a great sunday…my weekend just lasted a blog-readen’ time longer on a monday morning :-). Plus my sunday was too relaxed, a little ill here, and when the day finally cooled down we went out for food but ended up cooking at home cause nothing was open or worked out for us – sad story, really :-). The pulled meats look amazing. Just amazing. I could eat that for breakfast I’m sure – and lunch, and dinner.
Not allowed to say you don’t like running? well I hate swimming. thought I’d hate yoga but I love it! that’s just how it works some times…plus it’s your blog, so I’d just feel free to tout my workout preferences ;-)
I didn’t think I would like yoga, either, and totally did!
Hey I was at the parade today also! Too bad I didn’t run into you, I’d love to meet you, and those cute pups of yours!! I didn’t make it to the festival though. It was HOT and my friend who is on the derby team skated in the parade and was super dehydrated (and grumpy) by the time she was done. This was my first year actually going to the parade and it was soooo fun. :)
Amber! We do need to meet up sometime. You have a dog, don’t you? Maybe we could have a doggy playdate!
Yesssss that would be so fun! I am going to email you right MEOW!
Dayum, those guys have nice legs!
I hate parades, but gay parades are the exception. So much fun. The best one is the one in West Hollywood on Halloween! I swear, some of those queens look prettier than me.
i need to make pulled chicken so badly, i’m going too. i’ve even got a slow cooker!
I’m always quite ecstatic when I hear a blogger admit they aren’t into running! Haha I understand it’s good exercise but there are other things out there and sometimes it gets tiring reading about races and half-marathons. I love a good jog if it’s nice outside but other than that… nah. I used to love parades as a kid (since they always threw candy into the crowd) but not so much anymore!
YES! Gay pride! I hope this country can wake up and everyone can have the same rights and freedoms to do simple things like marry and walk down the street without being harassed or judged. Kudos to you for putting the parade on your blog Janetha!
I agree. It’s ridiculous that gay people aren’t granted the same rights as straight people.
wow, a day does not get much better that that, j! a parade, time with friends, a 5k, fam gathering in the eve…and sunshine! love all your photos, esp seeing everyone having such a good time.
i love to run, love to race, love everything about running…and i love that not everyone loves to run! find your thing and enjoy that. life is too short to waste time on fitness pursuits that bore you.
we had fab sunshine here, too, on sunday. i love this time of year!
“i don’t like races. paying to run? not for me. “–
Girl. One of the major reasons i stopped racing in races was b/c i refuse to pay essentially $100 for a couple (2 entry fees + parking fees + misc expenses day of race) and stress out over a 7am start time when i can run for free, all day, at my leisure. That’s why i dont race anymore, but I do run but like 3-4 miles. Not 12 before breakfast like many bloggers!
And yes, love parades and festivals and fairs and all that jazz. Have posted the last 2 years in a row about gay pride parade in san diego. I LOVE IT!
i would love to go to pride in san diego! fun.
I love that you admit this because I feel that there are SO many other people who probably feel the exact same way as you but are just too afraid to admit it. :) I always tell people, if you don’t LOVE to run, then don’t do it! I would never do something I absolutely dreaded. Like swimming. I hate swimming. I will never choose swimming as a workout.
What a fun weekend. I had no idea Roseanne was still around. LoL
Hope you have a great week!!
Is it awkward if I say thats a really hot pic of Marshall with Penny? I hope not, you go girl :) I love the first pic of you as well, you look very sassy and cute.
I need whatever that thing is that says Dogs are the New Kids, yes!!
I feel like I shouldnt be a blogger b/c I dont like running, yoga or nut butters, le sigh. I used to run but hurt my knees and only really “enjoyed” it a few times. I want to be able to walk by the age of 35 so I stopped running.
not awkward! haha. i will send you the website of that bag. they have it on mugs, tshirts, bags.. you name it!
Ok good, it’s a compliment! And yes, please send it–thanks :)
The only thing I run is my mouth. Even when I was in a better position to exercise intensely, running was never my thing. I love walking and hills, yoga and HIIT-type things–generally being active–but running? Not so much. It also seems like half the people I know are training for races and marathons right now, which makes me feel lazy. However, to each their own.
Parades are good for people watching, which is all kinds of awesome, but I don’t really get into the whole parade concept. I think the floats just move too slow.
And yes, dogs > children :)
What a busy, but fun day :) I do enjoy racing, but only a couple times a year. it can get super pricey and training can takeover your life!! Gotta love a day where you spend so much time outside in the sunshine :) Dogs do make wonderful kids. Frankie will forever be our first child. And what a lovely dinner. Great spread Momma B! I heart corn on the cob and its already getting SOOOO good! I’m not a huge parade fan. Have a nice Monday
What a fun day! I just reccently started running with the wii fit. I’ve been trying to slow ease into working out with it. I’m liking running. Although, I’m not sure how much I’ll like it once I start doing it outside.
Your mom makes the best looking dinners! Everything looks amazing! :)
I love festivals and prades! They are so fun!!
While I do like running and racing, I think it’s great that you’ve figured out that you don’t. I feel like so many people try to run because they feel like it’s what athletes do, but in reality, there are so many other forms of exercise.
There’s a big gay pride parade/festival in Atlanta that’s fun to go to.
Love the “modern family” t-shirt! Too cute! And oh my LAWD, I am drooling all over myself looking at that fried ice cream! It has been far too long since I’ve had one of those!
I like running, but I just do it for me. I may run a race someday, but I don’t see me ever getting into it like hardcore or anything. I go through little phases where it’ll be the only way I want to get my cardio for a week or so and then I get bored with it and move on to something else. But I actually like running between 3 and 5 miles…somewhere in there is my “sweet spot”…I feel great and it gives me time to myself to either think or just jam to the tunes on my iPod!
I’m not a fan of parades…too slow…too boring…too hot! I don’t even like to watch the Thanksgiving Day parade on TV!
I love Navajo tacos–although we just call them Indian Tacos here in Oklahoma!
As far as races go—and running–I used to feel the SAME way. Give me HIIT any day. I want in and out. But, my first half marathon changed that. I LOVE RACES now. Don’t really love training for them though.
The parade looks like a blast—and for a nice cause too :)
i love running but have definitely had a love-hate relationship with it since college. i will say i think i’ve injured myself to the point that i can’t run anymore, and that was something i had to come to terms with! it made me with that i’d done a lot more loving and lot less hating of it while i could still do it :)
I ran my first 5K on Sunday. I was expecting to be hooked, like most people, but I honestly wasn’t. I agree that running can be boring and that there are much more exciting workouts. Glad I found out it’s not for me!
I’ve just started running again after a long while, and it’s definitely more for my own enjoyment and feeling stronger as I get better. I love the energy of races but it might be a while before I ever participate.
Parades are usually too much for me with crowds and craziness, but it’s fun if they’re smaller. One year while home for the holidays my friend and I went to the Rose Parade line up at 5am to check out the floats before the madness – a good way to do it, in my opinion!
Running and I have never been friends and do not think we ever will, Im not going to say never, that is a harsh word, because who knows, one day I could wake up and want to run a marathon, lol!
Fried ice cream is so damn gooooooooooooooooood! There was this place called Chi Chi’s that had the best! I used to go when I was little for my birthdays there because of the free fried ice cream birthday dessert!!!
Looks like the gay pride parade was awesome!!
Momma B can cook for Mike, Anthony, and I anytime ; ) just wanted her to take note of that!
Love you!
i like running but i’ll only do a race if it’s for a good cause – plus i can’t run on asphault for very long w/out knee pains & the shirts they give out never fit me right!
also, i get nervous when i do a race. i know it’s silly because it’s not like i’m running to win – it’s just leftover anxiety from cross country days! :)
Some people just aren’t runners. I point myself through tons of pain, tears, and a half dozen doctor visits before I accepted that fact for myself. So no, it’s completely not taboo.
And ever since you mentioned Penny’s deep love for Marshall, I can’t stop noticing that she’s always with him. It’s adorably hilarious.
She’s so obsessed. It’s ridiculous!
I do like running — most of the time. I go in stages. I’ll train for an event and just love running and then I get burnt out and do something else for a while.
I love parades — people watching is so much fun!
I ran my first half marathon yesterday. The first half I was all “I love running” and the second half there was a lot of “what the eff am I doing? This sucks! Why have I never gotten this runner’s high people speak of?!” The last mile I actually felt like sobbing. And then I finished and sat down on the sidewalk and felt SO happy and proud that I did it. LOTS of emotions to have by 10am on a Sunday. Not sure if I want to do another one… but I probably will :) By the way, i LOVE your hair!
Thank you! And by the way, this is the best comment ever. I loved the play by play!
Glad you had fun at the 5K with company! I love running, but I do think a lot of people run because they think they should rather than really liking it. I would rather run on my own rather than race because races cost so much money, and I get so disappointed if I don’t do well in a race (even though I do have bad run days).
I had a similar feeling during a 5k on Sunday. I felt like shit the entire race and kept thinking to myself, “what did I get myself into?” I used to love running but lately I feel like it just hurts! Boo. I hope I start to love it again soon.
“Dogs are the new kids!” I love it! P.S. I may or may not have convinced Andy that we need a dog! :)
YES! You guys do need a dog. Especially for summer. I mean, what else are you going to do with your time??? Then I can meet said dog when I come to LA this summer!
Also.. even if you don’t start to love it again.. who cares? As long as you don’t care, that is.
Hey, good for you for being honest about running! I love running but I’m a little injured right now so haven’t been able to put in the miles I’m used to. And reading about all my fave bloggers running crazy miles makes me jealous!
I also love Gay Pride Parades. Chicago has a great one. I used to go to it every year. And that street food looks amaaazing. Fried ice cream? I wish I could have that right now in my cubicle.
I fall into and out of love with running quite a lot… I have to be in the mood, you know? This morning when I was out walking my dog, I was hit by the first strong urge to run since last fall! I would have done it, too, if I hadn’t had on flipflops and was attached to an old, arthritic dog. Usually, the elliptical is more my style. I sweat like a banshee, but I get to watch TV while doing it… and its just sitting in my rec room, so I don’t have to go anywhere or get ready to do it–I can just hop on and go! Parades are fun, as long as its not freezing cold or baking hot out!
I used to love running but after doing long distance running for a while my body had just had enough! I had sore knees practically all the time and it just wasn’t worth it. So I scaled back and only run in races that I really enjoy. This weekend is my first race in over a year but I love it because it’s women only. It’s so empowering!
Glad to hear you had a nice weekend :-)
Mhm… I love running. But I don’t like strength training.
I’ve always enjoyed running, but I think I’m starting to get to a point where I want to do something “new.” I’m already committed to a half-marathon in September (my first!) so after that I’m going to definitely shake things up and try more boot camp-style cardio and see where it takes me. :)
As for parades, I LOVE parades in the fall when it’s chilly (here in PA) and you need blankets and hot apple cider!
Looks like tons of fun!!! I really want one of those dog shirts…my dog is definitely my kid…without all the crying. Win! ;)
I barely run anymore. There are just so many other options out there that are a lot more fun, for me personally. And I feel better when I do more strength training based workouts and slightly less cardio. Just seems to make my body happier!
I do not love running. I respect it, but have come to accept I am more built for walking, hiking, dancing and things I find pleasurable!
Your dinner looks so amazing!! I haven’t had corn on the cob yet this year and am dying for it!
What an awesome day! I’m not much a fan of parade’s either…..but I’ll go if Colin wants to go. :)
It’s ok not to like running. Everyone has their own “thing” – and you should do what you love!
I like running, but I barely ever race. Sometimes I tell myself I will enter a race and then I change my mind. I prefer running to be an activity that I do for fun and to enjoy the outdoors!
yay running! It was kind of funny, because I realized how much I have missed running. I don’t think I’ll ever be a super marathoner–too boring! But the 5k made me remember why I began running in the first place. I think I overdid it a bit last summer and it just wasn’t fun anymore. Thinking “I HAVE to run.” Ugh. Why? Now I feel more like I don’t HAVE to, just WANT to. Plus it really is a TON easier running on my own than running with 50 lb. slug. lol. The best part was just catching up with you though. It was nice to meet Kristen too. She is so nice. Wish her luck in the Ragnar for me–crazy girl! She will do great! xoxo
I am not into running. I love to walk and hike, so I get plenty of time outdoors, but for workouts I much prefer strength training. I always feel like I accomplish something really huge every time I add one more pushup or 5lbs to the barbell. Plus it seems that all of the runners I know get injured a lot, and that is just no fun at all.
It looks like you had an awesome day. I cannot wait for corn season!!
I’m so with you on the running! Another reason to add – I’m not a morning person, and you have to be at races insanely early!
I don’t love running, but just these past few months it’s really been all I’ve been doing and it’s growing on me. I generally like parades, but I have witnessed some painfully boring ones too. Pride looks like a ton of fun though!
I totally remember this from last year. What a cool event, and running is definitely not everyone’s thing. Heck, if my hip doesn’t turn around, it might not be my thing very soon!
