in groceries

hey guys! i have a lot of fun stuff from the weekend to recap, but i am really short on time as i am catching a movie in 45 minutes. we are finally going to see bridesmaids!

i didn’t want to leave you completely hanging, so i decided to show you what i got from sunflower market and costco today on my usual sunday grocery trip.

i was grocery shopping for a LONG time today, because we are completely out of several things. between me being out of town and deathly ill, it really left the cupboards and fridge bare.

first up: sunflower market.

IMG_3354

check out P & R relaxing in their cave… wishing they got some of the goods above.

IMG_3355

starting on the left..

IMG_3360

  • tofu
  • low sodium deli turkey
  • ground chicken breast
  • laughing cow cheese
  • spirutein protein powder single serving packets (in cookies & cream and cappucino)
  • salsa
  • cherry jam (for marshall)

in the middle.. produce fun.

IMG_3359

  • sprouts
  • cauliflower & broccoli (precut)
  • mushrooms
  • grape tomatoes
  • cucumbers
  • braeburn apples
  • red onions
  • cilantro
  • lemons
  • cute little mangos (impulse buy)
  • bananas
  • asparagus

moving to the right..

IMG_3358

  • rolled oats
  • shredded spoonfuls (for marshall)
  • knock off kashi go lean
  • onion bagels
  • oat bran bread
  • almond milk
  • pom juice (for marshall)

some of these items were for breakfasts and lunches and i also bought the things i needed to make for my weekly dinner plan.  here’s what is on our menu this week:

  • spaghetti with ground chicken marinara
  • stuffed bell peppers
  • tofu masala with veggies
  • salmon piccata and asparagus
  • sweet potato black bean chicken enchiladas

i had to make a pretty hefty costco trip today.  i won’t show you the non-grocery items (because paper towels, toilet paper and deodorant is boring) but i will show you the food finds.

IMG_3361

starting from the left again!

IMG_3362

  • raspberries
  • blackberries
  • grapes
  • bell peppers
  • spinach

you may wonder how we go through this produce before it goes bad, since it is just the two of us. the grapes and berries go straight into the freezer and marshall uses them for his shakes. i go through spinach like a maniac.. and bell peppers are great to snack on. none of this will go bad.

in the middle..

IMG_3364

  • flavored chobani (for marshall)
  • eggs
  • chicken breasts
  • plain greek yogurt
  • cottage cheese

and finally, on the right:

IMG_3365

  • black beans
  • larabars (for marshall)
  • sprouted wheat bread (for marshall)

i also bought two boxes of marshall’s ready to drink protein shakes.. they are on sale right now for $5 off! deal.

i put all the groceries away and laughed.. am i the only one who has a whole drawer in the fridge for chobani?

IMG_3367

marshall is off riding his bike. so i made myself a quick and easy dinner with my new purchases.

IMG_3369

a toasted onion bagel sandwich with laughing cow, dijon mustard, turkey, sprouts and cucumber. i LOVE this combo.

IMG_3377

well, gotta jet! be back tomorrow with a recap of the weekend.

Qs~

1. do you shop at bulk stores (costco/sam’s club/etc)?

2. what’s in your shopping cart this week? any new to you purchases?

BroccoliHut May 22, 2011 at 6:09 pm

Great grocery haul! Have you tried those flavors of Spirutein before? I love mixing the Cookies N Cream flavor with Greek yogurt–tastes just like pudding!

janetha May 23, 2011 at 1:49 pm

That is such a good idea! I have had the flavors but always make a shake with them!

Olga May 22, 2011 at 6:09 pm

I LOVED Bridesmaids, I laughed the whole time.

I love your Chobani drawer…I’d have a Fage one too :)

actorsdiet May 22, 2011 at 6:14 pm

i need some of that chobani!!!

Kristina @ spabettie May 22, 2011 at 6:15 pm

we shop at Costco, but not TOO regularly, just for some things. no new purchases for me, and having just returned from vacation I went VEGGIE shopping! I need to get some real shopping done tomorrow night, I think.

I hope you love Bridesmaids – I saw it and cried I laughed so hard!!

love the pups under the table – too cute :)

VeggieGirl May 22, 2011 at 6:16 pm

Sometimes I shop at Sam’s Club, but that’s mostly for tissues and paper towels, haha.

Ahh Chobani – I still have yet to try it…

1970kikiproject May 22, 2011 at 6:19 pm

oh, soooo glad you’re seeing bridesmaids!!! very very funny.
no big box store shopping since i live across from a grocery store, so i go there. once in a while i drive to a *bigger* grocery store…because they have better cereal selections! :)

Felicia (Natural + Balanced) May 22, 2011 at 6:19 pm

great buys! have a sams club and always walk out with berries, organic spinach, frozen broccoli, lara bars, laughing cow, and greek yogurt. really wish i had a costco around here because they have so much more to choose from!

katshealthcorner May 22, 2011 at 6:22 pm

YUM!!! I love grocery hauls!!! We’re going to the grocery store tomorrow, so thanks for all of the good ideas of what to get! :)

carlee May 22, 2011 at 6:29 pm

I eat that same sandwich combo! I live it. just
not on onion flavored bread.

I shop at BJs for bulk purchases.

Annette @EnjoyYourHealthyLife May 22, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Oh wow that sandwich combo looks rockin! I LOVE laughing cow and Chobani too :)

carly71722 May 22, 2011 at 6:43 pm

Love the haul :) I shop a Costco for certain bulk essentials – always Chobani and the Fage 0% Plain tub. I only get produce there when I need a bulk amount because I live right across the street from a farmers market/grocery store that has great prices all the time! Can’t wait to hear about your weekend.

my little celebration May 22, 2011 at 6:48 pm

I always like seeing what you pick up at the store. It’s not like I’m going to copy your shopping list or anything, but it’s always interesting to see what and how much other people buy – especially married couples.

My shopping cart was pretty light this week as we’d gotten a lot of essentials last week. But tonight I picked up some FREE items, thanks to coupons, including wheat thins, eggs, butter for baking, and chocolate chips x 2. I also picked up some organic frosted mini wheats so I’m anxious to see how they taste.

Have a great week, friend!

Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) May 22, 2011 at 6:52 pm

I dont shop at bulk stores b/c I find I impulse buy too much, end up with more than I need and can comfortably use before it goes bad or can store it without it taking over my life in my small urban house, and I actually save more money by just doing TJs and reg groc store b/c i dont overbuy like i do when i get into a costco :)

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) May 23, 2011 at 8:09 pm

ME TOO! I am not allowed in Costco the end.

Erica May 22, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Great job with the shopping! I need to try that spirutein powder- I’ve heard such good things. And mmm chobs! Costco has some awesome produce- we used a bundle to make a giant fruit salad for Josh’s sisters graduation this weekend- so good! Let us know how you like bridesmaids!!! I SO want to see it.

1. do you shop at bulk stores (costco/sam’s club/etc)? Costco!!

2. what’s in your shopping cart this week? any new to you purchases? lots of fruits and veggies, baking stuff ;), pork (to make pulled pork for the man), chicken for bbq chicken calzones, tons of yogurt (plain chobanis for me, flavored for the man), etc!

Eden May 22, 2011 at 7:02 pm

I see Barbara is still your bitch….

Krista C. May 23, 2011 at 1:35 am

Like!

simplyshaka May 23, 2011 at 5:33 am

LOVE!

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) May 23, 2011 at 8:10 pm

THank goodness I read this before commenting or I would have said almost the exact same thing. I find it rather worrying, don’t you?

Sarah May 22, 2011 at 7:03 pm

my sister is coming to live with us for a while this summer and she has a costco membership! i can’t wait to use it while she’s here!

Amy May 22, 2011 at 7:15 pm

Does Marshall eat the grapes frozen ever? They really are an awesome summery, frozen snack!

janetha May 23, 2011 at 1:49 pm

YES! I love frozen grapes!

Amy @ Love4Living May 23, 2011 at 3:56 pm

I actually just found out the black seedless are realllly good. They freeze differently for some reason. Yum!

mering4 May 22, 2011 at 7:19 pm

Love all the goodies! I want to see bridesmaids so bad! Looks super funny. Nate and I are going to make tater tot hotdish this week…and try and make it somewhat healthy. So we picked up tater tots for his side. Can’t say that I’ve ever bought them before! haha! Oh, and we have a Costco membership, still, but don’t get to use it very often since we’ve moved. The closest one is in Minneapolis, now, and that’s 2:45 away!

Hope you enjoy the movie!

Holly @ The Runny Egg May 22, 2011 at 7:24 pm

I don’t shop at bulk stores because I never think they’d have anything I want — although I would love to get big tubs of berries like yours. We have a Costco literally down the block from our house. I should check it out some time!

Lisa May 22, 2011 at 7:25 pm

We are getting a Sunflowers Market! What do you think of it? Love it??

I shop at a Sams Club from time to time..but just being little ole me, its hard.

janetha May 23, 2011 at 1:56 pm

YES! It is my favorite place to shop!

marissa May 22, 2011 at 7:34 pm

i just tried chobani this week and i LOVE it! i want a chobani drawer now. we don’t have a costco near here but we do have a sam’s club. i wonder if sam’s club has bulk chobani and larabars?

Sam May 22, 2011 at 7:36 pm

We love shopping at Costco! We get a lot of our fruits and vegetables there. We haven’t been in a while though, so we’re due for a trip.

lifttorun May 22, 2011 at 7:48 pm

Bridesmaids is hilarious! You’ll love it.

I need to go grocery shopping. I just need some veggies and fruits.

Tabs May 22, 2011 at 8:24 pm

My shopping cart at Costco had a LOT of the same items that were in your cart! We love Chobani (wishing I had an extra drawer in the fridge to put mine in) and we definitely fly through the spinach like it’s going out of style. I won’t name all the items because thats boring but seriously, our Costco hauls were oddly similar today. :) One of the things we always get at Costco that wasn’t in your basket the huge bag of broccoli florets. We inhale that veggie! I love to roast them – yum! A new to us purchase were the freeze dried sliced fruit. Oh my yumminess! Totally popped open the cinnamon apple when we got home and added them to my fage yogurt. So tasty!

janetha May 23, 2011 at 1:57 pm

So funny! We are so similar.. I usually get that bag of broccoli but that’s what I was barfing last week (TMI?) so I had to pass. But usually, I get it! And the carrots. Also, I recently got the cinnamon apple freeze dried fruit and am obsessed with it. SO weird!

BrocStar May 22, 2011 at 8:55 pm

I adore bagel sandwiches… tho I pretty much love any sandwiches!

Caroline @ Out of Liney May 22, 2011 at 9:07 pm

Hey Janetha! I have this terrible habit of chewing Five Gum (Cobalt Flavor), and it’s SO much cheaper at Costco. I delight in buying that, and household staples like toothpaste, at Costco, but otherwise I fear the large number of ingredients and preservatives in their food offerings. I wish I had your organization skills! I really should cut down to one big shop (with a quick second shop for produce) per week, and do some serious meal planning.

P.S. What did you think of Bridesmaids? Might be hard to eat after some of those horrible scenes! I thought it was pretty good otherwise :)

Jayme @ Runner-n-Spice May 22, 2011 at 9:13 pm

Looks like you are all ready to go for some good eats :)

I was going to see Bridesmaids on Friday, but ended up going to see Water for Elephants – super good flick. Bridemaids will have to wait til next Friday!!

Mama Pea May 22, 2011 at 9:20 pm

I want your Spirutein and Marshall’s cereal, please.

:)

Anne May 22, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Haha, love the doggies lounging…I wonder what a canine shopping spree would look like? probably less chobani :-).

I want EVERYthing on that table…my shopping has been expensive for about ten days now – I’m on a wine spree! Summer is finally here, and all the whites are calling my name. I’ve stocked up good. Hope you enjoyed the movie.

Katie May 22, 2011 at 10:09 pm

I WISH we shopped at Costco… sadly, we have pretty crummy grocery stores (unless I want to shlep groceries on the subway from Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s). I’m going to hit up the farmers market tomorrow for some veggies, though… not too much though because I have a lot of dinner dates this week!

Katie May 23, 2011 at 3:41 am

you will love the movie! Im sure you did!!!

Love the grocery haul! We do not buy stuff in bulk, we actually have never been to a sam’s club type place here, maybe one day!

Have a happy Monday ! love you!

The Teenage Taste May 23, 2011 at 4:20 am

WHOA! Now that is A LOT of groceries! One of my favorite finds this week was a huge tub of organic blackberries for $10. It probably has 4-5 cups of blackberries in it. Bargain! :]

Heather (Heather's Dish) May 23, 2011 at 4:49 am

i usually do my shopping on monday nights, but there’s always some kind of nut butter, meat, lots of veggies, and a pound of butter. always a pound of butter :)

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine May 23, 2011 at 5:16 am

Bulk stores are the bomb. Lately I’ve been making my way through a case of vegan Boca burgers. I love that they’re bigger than the ones you buy at the normal grocery store!

Joie May 23, 2011 at 5:29 am

My problem is yogurt I think. Always buying more and more.
Have you ever tried “Food For Life” Brown Rice Bread? Its yummy. Put it in the microwave to warm it up and I like it a lot (I dip it in yogurt after spreading it with avocado).

janetha May 23, 2011 at 1:58 pm

I have never heard of that! I will keep an eye out. Yogurt addiction isn’t so bad. At least it’s not crack.

simplyshaka May 23, 2011 at 5:34 am

I seriously need to make friends with someone who goes to Sams Club or Costco. It’s just me so it doesnt make much sense for me to have a membership. I love your Chobani love btw

This wk is triple coupons at our supermarket so I am shoppin for whatever I can get for free or under $1. I feel confident I will get alot of stuff!

withasideofhope May 23, 2011 at 5:37 am

I love seeing what other people buy at the supermarket! :) We sometimes will shop at BJ’s. I find that the supermarket has better deals. I like using our BJ’s card for gas. It’s so much cheaper around here! :)

Kristie May 23, 2011 at 5:37 am

I love the chobani drawer. I wish I had a drawer dedicated to greek yogurt. Ours are filled only with veg, fruit, and meat/cheese. How unconventional, right? Ha

Costco owns my heart. And if there were more club stores nearby, they would probably own my heart too. Anywhere that sells giant duo packs of hummus, huge bags of carrots, bags of apples the size of my body…how can you NOT love that?
This week no new products on the grocery front, just lots of produce. We were definitely running low and it was sad times.

Katie @ running4cupcakes May 23, 2011 at 5:58 am

I totally have a shelf for all my chobani in the fridge! I love Sam’s Club – they have the best prices on fruit and veggies!

natalie (the sweets life) May 23, 2011 at 6:57 am

I used to eat bagel sandwiches all the time in college…haven’t made one in way too long!

Can’t wait to hear what you thought of bridesmaids!

Stefanie @TheNewHealthy May 23, 2011 at 7:23 am

Yess, Costco is my favorite!! :) I can’t wait to see Bridesmaids!

mindrunningwild May 23, 2011 at 7:40 am

that’s a good haul. mission accomplished.

LauraJayne May 23, 2011 at 8:47 am

You do a MUCH better job at Sunflower Market – I never find what I want there! I’m so totally a Whole Foods-shopper, and I never buy bulk! I need some bargain-shopping help!

janae @hungryrunnergirl.com May 23, 2011 at 8:51 am

Costco is my favorite and those raspberries look absolutely amazing. Your fridge is my dream fridge full of my favorite foods! We tried taboule this week from Costco and I am officially obsessed!

Chels May 23, 2011 at 9:27 am

I love going to Costco, it works out perfect for me because I literally go through veggies in bulk…I also really think that you do save money. I just wish it was not 40 minutes away from where I live :( Your bagel sandwhich looks delish!!

Sweet Cheeks May 23, 2011 at 11:16 am

i heard that movie is AWESOME. I would love to see it, as well as Water for Elephants.

Love all the grocery loot! I could shop at Sams/Costco every day. Buying there not only saves a ton of money, but their stuff always tastes so fresh compared to my usual grocery store.

Kayla May 23, 2011 at 12:05 pm

We shop at Sam’s, I love their big container of organic spinach, the big bags of frozen fruit and the big container of plain Chobani!

Megan May 23, 2011 at 12:31 pm

Holy moly, that’s a serious grocery trip! I love buying things at Costco but since it’s just me I can never go through it all! Canned goods seem like a good idea, though. I’m in serious need of some groceries- it’s been a while since I went shopping!

Jillian May 23, 2011 at 12:52 pm

I NEED to get a cosco membership… Between my boyfriend and I we go through so much PB, milk, etc. It’s crazy….I keep saying it and you just reminded me I need to do it! Hmm some new items I recently hopped on the bandwagon with are Sun Warrior protein powder and Maranatha almond butter (but I ordered both from netrition).

janetha May 23, 2011 at 1:47 pm

How do you like the Sun Warrior? I want to try it.

Jillian May 24, 2011 at 8:03 am

It’s good! I didn’t know what to expect…the taste is a little different than normal vanilla protein powder (well obviously I guess being that it’s vegan) but it’s interesting…I usually add dark cocoa powder anyway.

Jillian May 24, 2011 at 8:05 am

PS I’ll pay you to ship me alternative bagels at a normal person price! I don’t have them anywhere around me and the website charges like $20 for shipping! So disapointing…. I ordered from some rando site and of course had a terrible experience.

teeneatlive May 23, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Oooh I love Chobani! That Spirutein looks amazing! I am dying to try it but it isn’t sold anywhere near me :( one day I am determined to try it….I’m just not sure how :D

janetha May 23, 2011 at 1:48 pm

amazon has everything!

teeneatlive May 23, 2011 at 1:59 pm

I thought I could reply through email….. I guess not? :D thats a great idea! I will definitely go to amazon!
