got fat?

by Janetha on May 14, 2011

in fun facts,product review

i talk about the various vitamins and supplements i take on a fairly regular basis. one supplement i take is an omega 3 pill.

omega 3s are essential fatty acids that our body does not produce by itself.  it is important to get your essential fatty acids in for various reasons including (but not limited to):

  • reducing the risk of heart disease
  • improving skin ailments
  • boost the immune system
  • control inflammation of the joints, the bloodstream and tissues

as you may know, i usually take a fish oil supplement that comes in pill form.  i take this in order to get my daily dose of essential fatty acids that my body does not produce on its own.

the downside to fish oils pills? fish burps.

another downside to the fish oil pills is that they are not exactly the most sustainable option.

i was recently contacted by jessica, a rep for ascenta products.  ascenta, maker of high quality omega 3 supplements, offers more sustainable options from diversified resources.

a bit about ascenta..

Ascenta provides unique transparency and superior quality.  Each lot of product is third-party tested for quality, purity and label claims and the test results are posted online with their Pure Check program, something that no other omega-3 supplement manufacturer offers.

i received two types of omega 3 supplements from ascenta.

first, the NutraSea DHA.

image

NutraSea DHA, which was just launched, comes from the most eco-friendly and sustainable marine source: wild squid, which is caught for calamari.  Much of the squid is not used for this, and has been regarded as waste, but actually contains 35% more omega-3 than wild salmon and 100% more than krill.  Unlike most fish species, Pacific Squid has dramatically increased in numbers over the last 30 years, and is naturally resistant to overfishing due to an early reproductive age and a very short lifespan.  NutraSea DHA is an ideal choice for pregnant and lactating mothers as well as seniors and individuals with cardiovascular and eye conditions.

the other supplement i received went straight to marshall. here’s a story.  a few weeks back, marshall asked me to find him an omega 3 supplement that was vegetarian and not from fish, squid or another type of non-vegetarian resource.  he is not vegetarian, but he prefers to use supplements that are vegetarian.

not even a week later, jessica contacted me and asked if i would like to try the ascenta products.. including this vegetarian omega 3!

NutraVege vegetarian omega 3.

image

· NutraVege utilizes plant sources to further diversify.   Echium and algal oil  – used as sources for EPA and DHA, respectively – fill a void in the market of vegetarian omega 3 supplements, as echium, a common plant found in many parts of the world, contains the omega-3 SDA (stearidonic acid), which readily and efficiently converts to EPA in our bodies.  Studies have demonstrated that SDA from echium coverts to EPA at a rate of approximately 20 percent, compared with just 3.28 percent for flax.

good stuff.

the thought of taking a liquid supplement kinf of worried me.. you know, taste-wise.  turns out, this supplement has a pleasant citrus flavor! it’s great to add to protein shakes or fruity juices.. or you can just take it straight up.

the folks at ascenta would like to give one of you guys a bottle of NutraSea liquid omega3! yippee!

I do take fish oil supplements too. I usually try to take them when I know I won’t be around anyone for awhile to avoid sharing my burps! My favorite way to enjoy healthy fats is with almonds!!

Jessica May 14, 2011 at 12:05 pm

avocado for the win!

Thanks for the giveaway!

glidingcalm May 14, 2011 at 12:13 pm

I love to get my fats in with avocado, MEAT , fatty fishes, and lots of full fat salad dressing.

i always felt like I should take omega-3’s more since I don’t eat a ton of flax, and def. dont have salmon every week!

Erica May 14, 2011 at 12:17 pm

Trisha May 14, 2011 at 12:25 pm

those fish burps are HORRIBLE. I try to get my fats in through nut butters and fish, but I know I don’t get enough. this would be great!

erin May 14, 2011 at 12:29 pm

My favorite fat sources are avocado and wild salmon. YUM

Megan May 14, 2011 at 12:37 pm

Fav way is avocado for sure. And tilapia.

Hollie @ Lolzthatswim(andRun) May 14, 2011 at 12:38 pm

My favorite way to get fats in is through nut butters and salmon. I try and eat both nearly everyday actually. Maybe because I have a slight addiction to fish? ha.

sarah b May 14, 2011 at 12:40 pm

nut butters, fish and flax. this looks awesome!

Kelsey M May 14, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Tea-bag May 14, 2011 at 12:46 pm

I love sardines – high in omega 3, vitamin d & calcium! Plus they’re low in mercury & sustainable! … And delicious! :)

Jen May 14, 2011 at 12:48 pm

Avocados and nuts! Love them. My mom keeps wanting me to take fish oil supplements, but honestly, the thought kind of grosses me out. I’m vegetarian, but not super strict, but they just seem gnarly to me. So I’d love to try the vegetarian supplement!

Mac May 14, 2011 at 12:51 pm

I used to take fish oil tablets, but I’m terrible at remembering to take those. So now I do it more naturally, primarily with avocados!

Laurel May 14, 2011 at 12:56 pm

Avocados and almonds for sure!

Erin May 14, 2011 at 1:01 pm

Almond butter, especially the TJ’s one with flax seeds!

actorsdiet May 14, 2011 at 1:07 pm

not entering the giveaway, but you can prevent fish burps in the pills by freezing them

Joanna May 14, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Avocado, nuts & nut butters are my main sources of healthy fats. I’ve been hearing a lot about the Ascenta products recently & would love the opportunity to try them as I’ve been putting off getting fish oil supplements, even though I know how beneficial they are, because I don’t like the idea of the fishy smell or taste.

Michelle May 14, 2011 at 1:20 pm

My favorite way to get healthy fats in my diet are sushi and nuts/nut butter. I’ve never taken a fish oil supplement, but would love to try it out. :)

carmen May 14, 2011 at 1:22 pm

i put avocado on my salads!

Ivori May 14, 2011 at 1:39 pm

Definitely avocados. I love my guacamole. Growing up my parents always took a spoonful of cod liver oil in the morning. I tried it once – GROSS! Liquid/pill fish oil supplements have scared me since.

Andrea@WellnessNotes May 14, 2011 at 1:41 pm

I’m not that thrilled with my fish oil pills, so I would love to try this!

Hope you guys are having lots and lots of fun right now! But I’m sure you are! :)

Annette @EnjoyYourHealthyLife May 14, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Avocado all the way! Great contest :)

Nicole B May 14, 2011 at 2:05 pm

i love mixing olive oil in with tuna fish instead of mayo. makes for a much healthier combo :) i would love to start taking fish OIL though…have been taking pills but they are GIANT (and hard to swallow), also requires that you take two of them to get a daily dosage and it’s hard to remember both pills at separate times of day.

maryz May 14, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Avocado is the way for me. I like thay thereis a vegetarian supplement!

Ros May 14, 2011 at 2:06 pm

I do so by making sure to eat lots of avocado :)

melinda h. May 14, 2011 at 2:49 pm

Avocado all the way….. I would never try it for the longest time because it just didn’t look appealing to me. Go figure that I’m borderline obsessed with it now :)

Allison @ Runs A Latte May 14, 2011 at 2:53 pm

I eat chia seeds and tons of avocados! I also take fish oil pills, but I’ve found that I have to take the pills while eating to avoid those nasty burbs – and that doesn’t even always work.

Christine May 14, 2011 at 2:57 pm

I take fish oil too!! I’ve been adding chia seeds to everything.

Leilani May 14, 2011 at 3:01 pm

My favorite way to get healthy fat’s is to incorporate peanut butter or avocados into a meal. I love eating salmon with a walnut crust for extra omega power!

Ashley May 14, 2011 at 3:35 pm

I always have some sort of healthy fat in a couple of my meals usually raw almonds or nut butter. But I dont think those everything I need so I also take fish oil capsules. These products look interesting! I never would have thought squid could be used.

I take Megared krill oil as my supplement, and food-wise I am in LOVE with basically all kinds of nuts and I’m addicted to peanut butter. I’m also fond of avocados and black olives, and I cook with olive oil frequently.
