this one’s for the dogs.

if you have been reading my blog for more than, oh, a day, you know that i am obsessed with dogs.

more specifically, my dogs.. but any dogs will do when it comes to satisfying my obsession with these furry friends.  i have been known to flip out and lay down on the dirty ground just to pet a pooch.

my pups, penny and randy, were recently lucky enough to receive some special treats from their friend krystina at polka dog bakery.

treeeeeats!!!!!!!!

i have to share a little about the bakery before i go on. it is too touching NOT to share.

The Polkadog Story

Polka Dog Bakery is our tribute to Pearl. Found as a stray outside San Juan, Puerto Rico, Pearl had only one eye, which gave her the funny habit of dancing her head from side to side whenever she stopped to say hello. She did a little sort of polka to everyone she met. So Pearl became the Polka Dog, and danced her way into people’s hearts.

image

Hard living had left our gem in need of a little extra nurturing, and to spoil her properly, we took to baking her gourmet treats. We used the finest ingredients we could find, mixed and matched different recipes, and baked a little love in every bite. And the polka dog bakery was born.

We still use the finest ingredients, and bake and prepare all our delicacies by hand. We now offer these treats to you, for your own four-legged diamond in the rough.

**********************************************

if that is not the most touching story, i don’t know what is.

penny and randy really hit the jackpot with these tasty, fresh, natural treats.

IMG_1158IMG_1159IMG_1160

polka dog bakery is based in boston, but they ship their goods all over the place through their online store.

IMG_1161

i love the fun shapes.. i am a sucker for cute stuff.

IMG_1167

i had a feeling penny was less concerned with the shape or cuteness of the treat and more concerned with the flavor…

IMG_1171

you can tell by the look in her eyes.

IMG_1170

“stop teasing me, ma.”

IMG_1172

it was only fair to do the same taunting and teasing to mister randy dog.

IMG_1173

he was licking his chops in anticipation for his super cute star shaped treat.

IMG_1174

hahah.. his eyeball cracks me up here.

IMG_1175

marshall is working on training the pups. randy is a super good stander.

IMG_1195

he can stand on his hind legs for a real long time.

IMG_1196

penny is not the best stander around…

IMG_1199

but she is working on it!

IMG_1201

krystina also sent this grand daddy sized bone.

IMG_1190

i am saving it for a day when one dog is really, really bad. i will give it to the other one and make the bad one watch the good one eat it. am i a horrible mother or what?

onto the good stuff.. a giveaway!

polka dog bakery wants to send one of you fine canine lovers a special package of baked goods.

to enter:

  • first and mandatory entry telling me about what kind of dog(s) you have (or if it is not your dog that would be getting the goods, just talk about the dog you’d give it to), their name and something you love about them.

Haha, that picture of Randy’s eye is too funny.

I have a golden retriever named Murphy. I love that he sleeps on his back with his legs up in the air.

Liz May 4, 2011 at 7:40 pm

my dog’s name is Berklee and I love when she snuggles up with me on the couch like there’s no place she’d rather be :)

andrea May 4, 2011 at 7:39 pm

Hi,

I have a Cairn terrier and a Pit Bull. I love my Pit, Diva, she is my baby and my running partner and the sweetest dog ever. She really deserved some treats because she will be running a 5k with me on May 22!! I liked them on FB and did the twitter thing!!

Thanks I hope I win for my DIVA!!

Jodi May 4, 2011 at 7:42 pm

What a fun giveaway! I have two rescued pit bull mixes. I love that they’re stereotype breakers! There’s nothing better than when my scary looking 75 pound male curls up next to every child he can find, just to snuggle and maybe give some kisses!! (Although I think it’s because he knows kids usually have food on them somewhere!)

Marie May 4, 2011 at 7:42 pm

Our little pup is a Shih Tzu named Bailey. One of the things I love most about him is how unconditional his love is. I never thought I’d love a dog this much.

Heather (Heather's Dish) May 4, 2011 at 7:45 pm

oh my goodness, i am so obsessed with our puppies! Bunker is a 4-year-old chocolate lab/Chesapeake Bay retriever mix who thinks he’s 10 lbs and a lap dog (he’s 100 lbs). Keira is a 2-year old (her birthday’s tomorrow!) black lab mix who would rather snuggle in bed all the livelong day than play and run…although she likes that too. they are the sweetest pups ever! i love coming home and getting bruises on my legs because they’re so happy to see me and wag their tails extra hard ;)

Ellie the Cheeky Cat May 4, 2011 at 7:45 pm

Bahah- my cousin’s eyeball is popping out- that cracks me up! hahah. And he doesn’t have opposable thumbs or a food handler’s permit- Puh! I DO!!

But I can’t stand on my hind legs like he can. I’m impressed. Randy, you the dawg.

Allison @ Food For Healing May 4, 2011 at 7:45 pm

oh man randy is the sweetest ever (and penny too, don’t want any jealous pups)
I dont have a dog, but if i did it would probably be a pug or pekingese, just because i love their squishes faces. My parents have a dog, and he LOVES treats, he would be so excited to get one of these. he’s about 11 years old, and a great pyrenese, so he is HUGE. He is the most spoiled, loving dog i know. they named him Buddy, because my dad really wanted to have a friend around when he stayed out at his acreage.

Jss May 4, 2011 at 7:45 pm

I have a boston terrier/beagle, otto, and a vizsla, rush. I love that they both like to snuggle with me at night and the crazy excited way they greet me when I come home every day.

alittleteteatete May 4, 2011 at 7:48 pm

My dog’s name is Riley, and she’s the sweetest girl around! She’s a cute chihuahua :-) I love that when I say “I need hugs” she comes and snuggles up into my neck. How can that not cheer you up??

alittleteteatete May 4, 2011 at 7:48 pm

I liked on FB

Kate May 4, 2011 at 7:48 pm

We have SIX dogs because we foster for the humane society! Three are puppies (rescued from the side of the road :() and extremely scared of people. But we are slowing getting them out of that…

The other three are ours – a German Shepherd, Snoodle, and a black lab puppy we just adopted. Things get a bit crazy with all of them around here! :)

alittleteteatete May 4, 2011 at 7:49 pm

Following on twitter!! :-)

Kacey Potter May 4, 2011 at 7:57 pm

I have two pound puppies named Jasper and Rory and I love how they shake with utter happiness whenever I walk into a room they are in!

Ashley May 4, 2011 at 7:59 pm

My dog’s name is Ellwood Blues (like after the Blues Brothers!) he is a half yellow lab/ half golden retriever and is 4 years old.

Ellwood absolutely loves vegetables. More specifically, he loves lettuce! If I want to get him to do anything I can just bribe him with pieces of lettuce and he will absolutely oblige! It’s even funnier that he knows the spanish word “lechuga,” so apparently every vegetable is “lechuga” now!

Even though my puppy loves the healthy stuff, I love to give him healthy cookies too! Sounds like a great company and I’m sure he’d love to try it :-)

Danielle May 4, 2011 at 7:59 pm

We have a Beagle mix named Benji. We found him at an animal hospital and fell in love with him immediately when he ran up to my boyfriend and started biting his finger! I absolutely adore him, we’ve had him since he was 8 weeks old and I love him to death!

Cheri May 4, 2011 at 8:00 pm

Those two are just TOO cute!

We have an American Eskimo mix named Caribou. He’s a crazy fellow who loves ploughing through snow and chasing mice and the water and garden snakes that live in our yard (we live right next to a creek). I appreciate the fact that he respects my desire that he refrain from hurting the snakes (they do a great job with the bugs in our garden) and satisfies himself with chasing them and then peeing on them. No kidding! He’s such a goof!

Haley May 4, 2011 at 8:05 pm

I have a yellow lab named Lucky :) He’s an old guy but I love how every time we go on a walk, he acts like a puppy because he is so excited

Haley May 4, 2011 at 8:06 pm

I’m following polka dog bakery on twitter and I tweeted about it!

Lara (Thinspired) May 4, 2011 at 8:09 pm

OBVIOUSLY I have to enter this one ;) Lulu is the LOVE of my life <3

Lara (Thinspired) May 4, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Tweet tweet! (or should I say woof woof?)

valmarant May 4, 2011 at 8:13 pm

Adorable pups!

I have a 2 year old German Shepard mix named Xena! She loves her treats!

Leah May 4, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Pippin is a golden retriever/lab mix and I love her to death. She’s super cute when she hears Huz come home and runs outside to look through the garage door to make sure it is him!

Carbzilla May 4, 2011 at 8:31 pm

We call that treat look BIG EYE! I never knew Bassetts could stand! Hunh.

Cady is a “lab/shepherd” mix but that’s a big lie. She’s probably Staff Terrier/Shepherd mix. She’s been nothing but trouble since the day we got her (she killed a skunk, enuf said) but we love her like crazy because she continues to give us unconditional love even after 9 years of scolding her. I know she’s LOVE to get some treats!

janae @hungryrunnergirl.com May 4, 2011 at 8:38 pm

You know how some people get baby-hungry when they see pictures of babies…. my insides yearn for a dog when I see pictures of yours. So, I am not entering because I don’t have any (Billy’s fault).
Your last post was amazing. You nailed it. I love that you do not judge ANYONE but you do what is BEST for you. Your recipes are always amazing and if those make you feel your best you keep on doing it woman. PS I really want to meet you for Yoga….Draper is not far from me so let me know when is a good day for you!

Julie May 4, 2011 at 8:44 pm

I have an 8 year old Boston Terrier named Haley. I love watching her burrow under the covers to sleep. I seriously have no idea how she breathes completely buried under 3 blankets, but she loves it under there!

Carly May 4, 2011 at 8:48 pm

I have two Westies named Molly and Sawyer. They are the funniest dogs ever, they always make my day better. And of course, they LOVE treats ;)

Annette @EnjoyYourHealthyLife May 4, 2011 at 8:48 pm

I would give it to my little sister’s dog, Chewie!! Such a fun giveaway :)

lifttorun May 4, 2011 at 8:53 pm

So, I have a lot of dogs. I just got a puppy on Sunday too. I have three dachshunds. One is named Woody; the others are Mickey and Pete. Woody is fat so that is why I love him, Mickey is the only dog that sleeps with me, and Pete is just plain dumb. No really. There isn’t much going on in his little head. Then I have a mutt named Roxy. I love her simply because she looks like rottweilers, which are my favorite breeds. Then I have a pekingese that is named Gizzy because when she gets wet, she goes nuts. She runs in circles. My other dog is Sophie who is a schnauzer. She really grew on me. She is really smart and hides her toys under the sofa so you have to get up in get them, which then you end up playing fetch with her. My last dog is a German shorthaired Pointer named Dean. I just got him Sunday and I love him because he is going to be a future runner!

All my dogs are either rescued or adopted from the humane society.

lifttorun May 4, 2011 at 8:54 pm

Oh yeah. I did the Twitter and Facebook thing too.

Megan (Running Foodie) May 4, 2011 at 9:04 pm

My mom has a sweet miniature schnauzer named Lily (but I pretend that she is mine). She’s 8 years old and thinks she is a human. I love that no matter what she is doing, if she sees you sit down, she immediately jumps into your lap to love on you!

I don’t have a dog yet (I really want both a yellow lab and an Alaskan Malamute), but I would give some to the awesome 19yr old dog Barkley who is the assistant at the physical therapy clinic I go to and to my ‘niece’ Daisy (a Golden Retriever).

truthtraveladventure May 4, 2011 at 9:18 pm

I have two dogs, Taffy a toy poodle- she is 14 and living strong, with old age she lost her sight and hearing but she’s still living life fully. I also have a Shih Tzu Poodle, Meika who is a 1 1/2 I she was a rescue from a puppy mill. I love my dogs and I don’t know what I would do without them, they are my little fur-babies!

simplyshaka May 4, 2011 at 9:21 pm

OMG Pearl’s story broke my heart :( And now I’m crying. I swear, I can’t read stories like that when it comes to the pups.

I have a little poodle.chihuahua-Lincoln aka Linky, Little Linx of Love, LL Cool Linx. I love that he is my cuddle bug, he is currently by my side as I type.

PS-Love how crazy Randy looks in that last solo pic! And Penny? She is so Lincoln’s gf!

Oh my gosh my babies would live these treats! I have 2 dogs, a 5 year old chubby adorable yorkie that is the sweetest thing, and a 4 year old mini schnauzer that just loves chasing anything outside. They both live their mama so much. They follow me everywhere around the house making sure I am always in site. Couldn’t imagine life without them. I even have a no more homeless pets license plate on my vehicle. Live the doggies!

I have a (16 year old!!) Siberian Husky and she would absolutely adore these babies. She’s such a little (old) oinker.

Dani May 4, 2011 at 10:29 pm

I love dogs. Probably too much. It breaks my heart to see so many dogs who are in shelters. If I could, I would definitely adopt every homeless dog and love them as much as I love my dog, Ace. He’s a puggle and the love of my life. I love that he’s a food hound (like me) and likes to snuggle up on the couch when we watch TV. Unless you try to move him, and then he gives you a dirty look and jumps off the couch. Ace rules the house, and has the keys to my heart. I can really go on and on about how amazing dogs are… Thanks for doing this! What a treat.

Mandee Lei May 4, 2011 at 11:29 pm

I have one dog named Rubi. She is a 9 year old Jack Russell that I have had since she was a baby. She is my best friend and she makes laugh every single day. One (of many) things I love about her is her smile. She loves to show off her beautiful teeth :} Whenever she does it brings a smile to my own face..no matter what kind of day I’m having. Dogs are the best!

Jenna May 5, 2011 at 12:05 am

The dog that I would like to enter is my grandmother’s dog, Baby. The one thing that I love most about her is that she tells you when she gets into stuff she shouldn’t by running into the room and giving you a big smile and dance routine. That and she literally pouts like a toddler in a corner when she doesn’t get her way. She is just plain hilarious!

Erica May 5, 2011 at 1:49 am

LOVE the story behind these treats and always enjoy seeing pictures of your babies :)

I think you know ;) But I have 1 English Bulldog named Frank and I love how incredibly lazy he is. He adds great balance to my sometimes hectic life :)

tiffany May 5, 2011 at 1:54 am

i have sydney, a jack russell/basenji. i love her and her curly tail and spots in general, but i especially love her bombardment of kisses when i come home from college!

aw, i miss her crazy little personality…going to see her in a week!

Leslie Luu May 5, 2011 at 1:55 am

My dog’s name is Ranger (short for power ranger). He is a german shepard – blue keeler cross. I love how he keeps me active=)

Jennie May 5, 2011 at 2:37 am

I have a maltepoo named Cody. I love that he loves me unconditionally! Thanks for hosting such a great giveaway, Janetha!

Stefanie K. May 5, 2011 at 3:20 am

Love your pics!

As I don’t have dogs at the moment I would send the treats to my sister’s dogs. She has two rescue, both Rottweiler crosses! Asia loves to play with her ball and if there is something wrong she puts on her big drama face. Maddie loves to be right where everyone is and knwo what is going on.

They both would love the treats! it would also be a little special gift for Asia who underwent surgery to remove a tumor and is now undergoing chemo to kill any cancer cells left.
