check in time.

by Janetha on May 3, 2011

in meals

today i am going to check in on my spring cleaning goals.. even though spring still hasn’t decided to make it’s debut here in utah.

i will keep thinking warm thoughts and count down my days until palm springs. (ten days, by the way.)

IMG_2461

where was i? oh yeah. goal checking in.  making a list of goals is only half the battle (and a hefty half, at that).  the other half is actually achieving those goals.  checking in on goals is a good way to make sure to achieve them.

here are my goals (from this post), in all their spring cleaning glory:

  1. drink a gallon of water daily
  2. eat at least 125 grams of protein daily—spacing it out at each meal
  3. take all my vitamins & supplements regularly
  4. stick to a workout schedule
  5. stop grabbing handful after handful of random stuff when i am at home just because it is there and i am bored (peanut butter filled pretzels, cereal, mary’s crackers, dark chocolate)
  6. don’t eat while driving (i swear this is my downfall—when i eat my snack in the car i feel like i didn’t eat a snack at all)

let’s talk about it!

#1: drink a gallon of water daily.

this gets a big HUGE check mark! sometimes (on bikram days) i get more than a gallon. my contigo water bottles are my saving grace and the only reason i am actually able to consume enough water each day. love them.

#2: eat at least 125 grams of protein daily.

i haven’t been counting my grams, but i have been making sure to eat body for life style.. which balances carbs with protein.. so i know i have been hitting my protein goals each day. plus, i can feel it and see it.  my body likes protein and when i get enough of it, it shows.

#3: take vitamins + supplements regularly.

i have been doing really good with this! today i forgot to take them, but marshall was still at home, so i called him and he brought them to me. what a guy.  you may recall my vitamins and supplements post where i talked about what i take.  i have been religiously taking CLA, a multivitamin, glutamine and a probiotic.  i have laxed off on the fish oil.. partially because i am lazy and partially because i have been eating fish 2-3 times a week.  i stopped taking my vitamin B because i heard/learned from you guys that if you take too much of a vitamin, your body just pees it out and it is wasted.  because i get plenty of vitamin B already, i just picture money going down the toilet any time i do take it without needing to.. so i stopped that one.  i haven’t been taking my calcium or fiber supplements for the past week because they go against my no sugar/sweetener added challenge.. so i have had to make sure i get these nutrients through food. not a hard task.

i did skip my CLA for almost a whole week because i am flighty.. and my abdomen could totally tell. i really think CLA works wonders for keeping a flat belly!

#4: stick to a workout schedule.

YEP! started insanity on april 3rd and haven’t missed a single day! and i have done all but 3 of the workouts in the morning, which is unheard of for me. i also started going to bikram yoga 3x a week.  my month pass expired today, so i have to start new one and get going again.. i will probably wait until after my trip to palm springs to do this.. so i can get the most for my money.  i have also started lifting weights with marshall. i haven’t mentioned this yet, because i have actually only gone twice.  last saturday we did biceps + triceps and yesterday we did shoulders.  i am so sore! he is a great motivator and shows me the ropes, so i am going to continue to lift with him at the gym when i am not too busy.  not only is it awesome for my muscles.. it’s great quality time.

#5: no more handfuls of random food.

this has been ten MILLION times better! upon setting my goals, i immediately made the shift of not grabbing things like peanut butter pretzels and chocolate covered almonds, but i was still grabbing cereal and granola handfuls. i slowly stopped doing that, but still would be caught every now and again with my hand in the love crunch granola box.  when i started my no sugar added challenge, the handfuls totally stopped. completely. why? because none of the handfuls of things i was eating were allowed during my challenge! this challenge was wonderful for breaking my grabby hands habit.

#6: don’t eat while driving.

i don’t. plain and simple. i stopped and i am so happy about it.  OH.. except this morning, i was running late for work. sooo.. i ate half my breakfast at home and the rest on the road. but this isn’t the type of eating while driving i am talking about.  i used to keep bars in my car and i would eat them while i drove (for my snack) and it always felt like i never had a proper snack because it was always inhaled on the go.  now when it is time for a snack, i sit down and eat it and acknowledge it.  this morning’s oats on the go were simply out of necessity.. i had to be on time and i wasn’t throwing them out!

speaking of those oats on the go.. how about i show them to you?

breakfast: 1/2 cup european hot cereal + 1 scoop vanilla protein powder.

IMG_2452

“european hot cereal” is sunflower market’s fancy way of saying rolled oats, raisins, rolled dates and slivered almonds. but mostly oats. it is found in their bulk bins and it’s delicious. i love it cold or hot.. but today i went with hot because i was fuh-reezing. come on, summertime!

IMG_2454

i cooked the fancy oats in a cup of water and added cinnamon and protein powder at the end.  i sprinkled a bit of uncooked cereal on top just so you could see what it was all about.. since the bits and pieces i had cooked were all hiding on the inside.

i did cool these off after the photo.  i used a small splash of unsweetened vanilla almond milk. i love that stuff.

lunch: leftover guilt free creamy pasta + spaghetti squash.

IMG_2455

not the most glamorous photo, as i ate lunch at my desk. what else is new?

IMG_2459

i didn’t have much pasta leftover (marshall is a big eater!).. so i amped it up with spaghetti squash. i do this all the time and i LOVE the technique. spaghetti squash adds volume, flavor and nutrition to any meal.  okay, maybe not any meal, as i wouldn’t put it on my pancakes.. but you get my drift.

[insert bikram yoga class here.]

bikram was lovely. i missed my class over the weekend and my body needed the hot room and relaxing postures. who the hell am i? i used to swear i would never do yoga, now i am addicted.

made it home and immediately snacked. well.. post-shower.

snack: plain chobani + fresh strawberries.

IMG_2492

keeping in line with my no added sugar challenge when and where possible, i had this delicious sweet treat for my afternoon snack. chobani and i have a love affair going on.. but that’s OK, because marshall has more rendezvous with chobani than i do.. so he can’t get mad at me for loving it so much.

IMG_2493

is anyone else super stoked about how good strawberries are right now?! i can’t get enough. i REALLY can’t wait for peach season. my fave.

well.. now i am going to perform my wifely duties. you know, do some laundry, pay the bills, do the dishes.  oh, and make dinner.  luckily this is one duty i LOVE.. making dinner is one of my favorite things to do.

well, that’s all she wrote. tune in next time for more random rambles and possibly a giveaway for your furry friend. wink wink.

Qs~

1. do you have any goals you are currently working toward? what are they and how are they coming along?

2. what food can you not get enough of right now?

The Teenage Taste May 3, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Glad to hear you are doing great with your goals, Janetha! I wish I could say the same, buuut I can’t. I set the same “stop grabbing handfuls of stuff when bored” goal and am a bit on-and-off with it. Oh well, I live and learn. :]

I am loving strawberries lately. They are oh-so juicy and fresh, plus my grocery store has been having organic ones on sale for $2 the past few weeks. SCORE! :]

Erica May 3, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Wow! You’re doing awesome. Keep rocking it. I need to get better about my protein. I was doing AWESOME for a while, but I’ve started so slack a bit ….I have to hit my 75 g a day for peanut! The european cereal looks yummy. And I’m totally adding strawberries to my chobs tomorrow.

1. do you have any goals you are currently working toward? what are they and how are they coming along? Continue to workout 5-6 days a week throughout pregnancy (if possible! but listen to body), keep on teaching pump (whoop!), get my 75 g of protein a day for peanut, get more sleep (I stink at this)

2. what food can you not get enough of right now? fruittttttt- love spring/summer.

Jessica May 3, 2011 at 5:23 pm

oh girl, i am SO excited for peach season. i am waiting with bated breath.

inspirewellbeing May 3, 2011 at 5:35 pm

I just went to Trader Joe’s and they had new sun dried tomatoes…. I have been putting them in my salad beasts. They are sweet, chewy, and so gosh darn tasty! Love em’

Holly @ The Runny Egg May 3, 2011 at 5:37 pm

Right now I’m just focusing on my grocery challenge — spend no more than $200 this month on food (for Jason and me) — so we’re basically eating out of our pantry and freezer. It has been fun so far (and we’re on day 3 so who knows how I’ll feel in a week!)

I think you are doing super good on your goals — I am impressed!

lifttorun May 3, 2011 at 5:50 pm

I still need to make my goal list! I’m so busy that I have been neglecting my blog and I feel like I’m letting all my seven readers down. Hahah.
Good job on your goals though.

I can’t get enough of Chobani! I love it.

tea-bag May 3, 2011 at 5:51 pm

i cannot get enough of oranges! i got on an orange kick this winter & it hasn’t let up!
i agree w/ you on protein – i feel so much more satiated throughout the day when i really amp up my protein intake. i make sure it’s included in all my meals & snacks – i just feel much more balanced (if that makes sense – no highs & lows on the blood sugar roller coaster).

Karen May 3, 2011 at 5:57 pm

What a great job on your goals! One of my biggest goals right now is training for a 5k race. I had to take brief hiatus because of an ankle injury but I’m now back on track. I’m using the Couch 2 5k program as my training guide.

I had a plain Chobani with fresh strawberries for the first time the other day – I’ve only ever had the flavored Chobani – and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the plain!

Annette @EnjoyYourHealthyLife May 3, 2011 at 5:58 pm

My goals are eating clean(er) than normal, eating as much fruit as possible (LOVIN the strawbs + oranges + apples!!), and telling my hubby often how much he means to me<—it is easy to forget this during the daily grind of things!

Abby May 3, 2011 at 6:02 pm

I am so with you on peach season! I can’t wait! :) One of my goals for May is to run 100 miles this month! Otherwise, I think I need to make a goals list. I get done with finals tomorrow so I should have more time to focus on that!

Carbzilla May 3, 2011 at 6:05 pm

Thank goodness you just reminded me I had wet clothes in the washer! Your blog is once again a lifesaver.

Everything happens for a reason, and we’ll be in Portland on the 14th picking up the keys to our new place! I’ll be thinking of you guys!

Way to go with your goals. I’m still FREEZING here too, but every day seems to get a tiny bit warmer. :)

my little celebration May 3, 2011 at 6:09 pm

I can’t get enough of blackberries! They’re fresh and in season and SO delicious!

Brittany May 3, 2011 at 6:20 pm

I love how you make a list of your goals, and keep referring back to it. This is something I MUST try. I’ve read many times that when you write something down, you’re more held accountable. A recent goal of mine as been to stop counting calories. It’s a success so far! I’ve recently leaned towards lower carbs and upped my fats to see how my body responds. So far, I feel great, I don’t feel sluggish and I feel so much leaner! My next goal is to start listening to my body when it comes to my diet. To stop eating when I’m full, to eat if i’m hungry, you know. Since I’ve upped my fats, I can’t get enough of peanut butter/coconut butter. LOVE!

Paige is Running Around Normal May 3, 2011 at 6:22 pm

You are kicking BUTT on your goals! Way to go :) But how do you eat hot oats in your car?! I’d be a mess :-P

Trisha May 3, 2011 at 6:23 pm

I just had some huge, glorious strawberries for dinner. Love them!!

Jill {i run i eat} May 3, 2011 at 6:33 pm

I just registered my husband and I for a half marathon in August. So I guess that’s a goal I’m working towards. I think this month I’m going to try harder to make my workouts more consistent.

I’m also a little obsessed with Chobani right now…especially the mango kind.

runyogarepeat May 3, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Great job on your goals, and strawberries (or any fruit) + Chobani is seriously the best snack.
My goals lately are just to do well on my finals next week and PR in my half marathon next week!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) May 3, 2011 at 6:37 pm

“keeping in line with my no added sugar challenge when and where possible”– amen for allowing a little wiggle room and not being black and white, no matter what. Gray shades do matter sometimes :)

I love the recap of your goals…and great job on them!

Palm Springs. Well, it’s 92F in San Diego today. I bet P.S. is about 110F today or MORE. We’re having a heat wave. If it stays like this you will need to drink even more water…haha!

BroccoliHut May 3, 2011 at 6:41 pm

Mmm your breakfast just reminded me of how delicious rolled dates are…I need to get some ASAP!
I am loving Nuttzo at the moment–I keep stealing licks from the jar!

natalie May 3, 2011 at 6:55 pm

Hi

Janetha, I eat one-ounce (2 squares of unsweetened baker’s chocolate) dark chocolate every day. Do you think this is a problem? I am not exercising because of a physical impairment. I’m trying to find examples of healthy bloggers that are not insane exercisers. But who eat chocolate every day (every day)?

janetha May 4, 2011 at 9:31 am

Hey Natalie,

I am not a nutritionist or dietitian and I also don’t know your personal needs or goals, so I don’t feel comfortable telling you if the daily dose of chocolate is OK or not. I am a firm believer that if you find something and it works for you, then go with it. If you like to eat the chocolate every day and it isn’t getting in the way of your personal health and fitness goals.. then why not? We are all on our own path and what works for one may not work for another.. so try not to compare yourself too much to other bloggers.. sometimes it is an easy thing to do, I have definitely done this, but I realized that while one blogger may be able to eat 60 grams of carbs for breakfast, I personally cannot (without gaining a bunch of weight). Different strokes for different folks :)

xo

Lee May 3, 2011 at 6:56 pm

I think I might try the no more than 5 grams of sugar thing that you posted yesterday. And oddly enough, I can’t get enough nutritional yeast lately. I’ve been putting it on everything. So random.

Raina May 3, 2011 at 7:27 pm

OMG. That cereal looks seriously good. I might just go get some tomorrow.
Current goals–stop picking at my meal while I’m making it. It is going okay but extremely hard to break. I have found that if I drink a glass of water while I’m making my lunch it helps to stop this.
Food I can’t get enough of–tomato paste. I don’t know why. I slather it on every veggie known to man, especially carrots. Maybe I’m low on lycopene??
Great job on your goals! I loved your no-sugar added challenge!

janetha May 4, 2011 at 9:31 am

Oh I love the idea of adding tomato paste to everything. GENIUS.

Naomi(onefitfoodie) May 3, 2011 at 7:31 pm

im SO stoked with how fruit in general is tasting lately esp berries! YAY I love fresh raspberries and they are almost back alsooooo PEACHES! I know their your fav and I cannot wait to enjoy them this summer!

you are ROCKIN your goals, Janetha seriously amazing. I wish I didn;t eat in my car but I am so on the go most of the time, I have to! but you are right, its so much better to sit and enjoy it. When I eat in my car half the time I dont know what Im eating and it doesnt taste as good as sitting down!

welp just finished my competition goal! up next…Another one! :)

Brittany May 3, 2011 at 7:33 pm

Awesome job on your goals lady! I just did a similar post evaluating the goals I set for myself back in January!

I am loving fresh berries right now and smoothies!

Meg May 3, 2011 at 7:34 pm

Yes! I am definitely loving the strawberries right now, especially since they are cheap at costco! I made the most heavenly strawberry juice the other day. I’ve also been on a big artichoke kick, yum.

I have the worst WORST habit of snacking after dinner/late at night way too much. I’ve been really trying to focus on changing that by buying clean food (instead of processed crap, my body always rebels when I eat it anyway) and getting enough protein. I also make an effort by walking my dog after dinner and keeping my hands busy when watching tv (thank you words with friends ;).

Cheri May 3, 2011 at 7:39 pm

I totally hear what you’re saying about spring. I’m up in Idaho Falls, and our weather has been a nightmare! The wind has been unrelenting and quite miserable. Our trees are “just” starting to bud out. Come on spring!

SO impressed by your goals and how well you are doing. The past four months have been an absolute trainwreck in our household, so it has been sheer survival mode. We’ve been trying to do our best, but now that things are settling down (I hope), I’m looking forward to getting back on track with following my goals of eating whole foods, getting in those supplements, following an exercise routine, and returning to the blog I put on hold. You’re an inspiration to me! Keep up the good work.

Foodwise, we are totally addicted to Chobani yogurt. My 12 year-old daughter is a serious ballerina, and puts in 3+ hours of practice a day. The protein is really important for her. She is also a big fan of Lara Bars (thanks to you).

applesnoats May 3, 2011 at 8:45 pm

you always seem to stick to the goals you make and i admire you so much for that! mybig goal is too stop grabbing handfuls of food here and there just cuz…hopefully i can stick to it like you did!
ps- i love sghetti squash too i use it in everything

megan @ the oatmeal diaries May 3, 2011 at 9:11 pm

You have really inspired me to drink more water! Unfortunately that means I now have to pee all the time. Haha and so awesome you’ve stuck with Insanity; I’m impressed!

glidingcalm May 3, 2011 at 9:15 pm

mmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! love that lunch!

and congrats on the goals!!!!!!!!!

Suzanne Williams May 3, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Yes, you 2 are on the same page. Just read http://www.eatingbirdfood.com
Interesting, I love goals and looking back to see if you achieve those goals.
Suzanne Williams

sophia May 3, 2011 at 10:05 pm

Good for you, Janetha! I’ve never really eaten in the car myself…I get very sick and it’s not pretty.

I can’t get enough of brown rice lately…just love it with runny egg!

Heather (Heather's Dish) May 3, 2011 at 10:12 pm

i am adoring strawberries in the worst way right now…they’re so good! wanna take me to palm springs with you? i’ll carry your bags… ;)

edenseats May 3, 2011 at 10:16 pm

I’m counting down the days! seriously, theres a little “countdown to janetha” clock in my room.

And I told trader’s your coming! They’re excited too! Deb can wait in the parking lot. (if your reading this deb, I’m being cheeky, you know I love you).

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) May 4, 2011 at 10:00 pm

Oh I’ll go in and buy up a storm. I’ll just have to weigh and measure everything that they’ve lied about on their labels. Simple!

Kalyn May 3, 2011 at 10:28 pm

Today I used two of the Chobani coupons that I got from the company thanks to you (: I’m so excited to try some of their new flavors!

Also, I totally agree about the strawbs. I have quite the little stockpile of them right now; unfortunately, still having to rely on frozen peaches… can’t wait for fresh, either!

1970kikiproject May 4, 2011 at 3:13 am

great work, j! you’re totally rocking your goals. thanks for sharing where you’re at/how the month of april went…love that you’re hooked on bikram!
spring is late arriving here, too – rain and chilly temps are the norm so far…that being said, i am loving COLD cereal in place of HOT oatmeal right now!
again, loved the recap and keep on keeping on – you’re doing great!

Lauren May 4, 2011 at 3:55 am

Great job on the goals!!! You have been doing amazing and I’m so proud of you girl!

withasideofhope May 4, 2011 at 5:25 am

Great work! I’m so glad that you are doing well with your goals! :)

I’m loving strawberries and grapes right now. I keep eating them every day. They are just so good :)

MelissaNibbles May 4, 2011 at 5:52 am

Congrats on the progress! The spaghetti squash looks delicious.

brandi May 4, 2011 at 6:26 am

you are doing SO great!!! :)

I totally thought of you when Nick and I finally went running the other night. I’m making the move forward!

Sarah May 4, 2011 at 6:33 am

i am obsessed with trader joe’s frozen very berry cherry blend! i love putting it on top of my oats. :) also, love grown foods granola is becoming a problem. why is it so good!??

Errign May 4, 2011 at 6:55 am

My May goals include: eat 5 salads per week, strength train 2x per week, pack for ASHEVILLE, run a sub-27 minute 5k, and do more yoga. Once I get into civilization (aka outta NH) I’d love to try Bikram. I have to admit though, it scares me a little. Were you intimidated by it when you first started going?

Still insanely jealous of your creamy pasta!

Michelle May 4, 2011 at 7:03 am

Congrats on the goals! You’re no sugar added challenge has really made me stop and think before I eat something. Thanks :-)

Lately I can’t get enough of Fage Total 0% greek yogurt. It’s just so creamy! And, as always, I can never seem to get enough peanut butter. I also cannot wait for blueberries to be in season! Once they are, I plan to eat them daily.

erika May 4, 2011 at 7:08 am

Keep rocking those goals, Janetha! Congrats!

I loove my contigo bottles. I have many reusable bottles in my day, but for some reason, I always wind up drinking so much water when carrying my contigo with me.

Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather May 4, 2011 at 7:36 am

You’re doing so good on your goals. Rock on sista! So cool that you and the hubs workout together.

My goal of no alcohol + sweets has been going great. I already feel better and more energized. Don’t really have many other goals I set yet.

Tessa @ Amazing Asset May 4, 2011 at 8:14 am

Nice job with your goals, it seems like you are working very hard and it is surely paying off :)
My goal to stretch more is a big fail… I am so inflexible and know I need to stretch after workouts, but I just never seem to have enough time. I know, lame excuse haha so I am giving myself a kick in the butt to do this!
And I cannot get enough of BLUEBERRIES right now! I am so excited all of the summer berries are finally starting to decrease in price and taste much better

czechvegan May 4, 2011 at 8:59 am

Great job with reaching your goals!! I currently can´t get enough of oats (my all time favourite:), black olives and carrots. Interesting thing you wrote about the vitamin supplements… I take my B-complex each day, I am a vegan and I am not sure I get all of them..I definitely don´t get my B12..but it doesn´t cost me that much money to be worry about it:)

Kayla May 4, 2011 at 9:31 am

My goodness you drink a TON of water! That is great though! My Camelbak groove is helping me drink a lot, too!

I am doing sugar free challenge right now and ALL mindless snacking has come to a halt and I feel so much better!

pawsitivelife May 4, 2011 at 9:58 am

I think not grabbing hadfuls of food, or finger fulls of nutella or PB is a goal i should adopt. My BF asked why the PB jar has finger jabs in it..I played dumb :(

janetha May 4, 2011 at 10:24 am

hehe. i would have too. don’t bed sad.. just smile and try to take one less fingerful tomorrow.

Katherine: Unemployed May 4, 2011 at 10:55 am

handfuls of random food are my weakness! I have to hide all easy-to-grab foods in hard-to-open containers

Healthy Coconut May 4, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Are you flying directly into Palm Springs or are do you have time to hang out in LA. ;)
