random wednesday blabber.

by Janetha on April 27, 2011

in meals

sometimes i just think of things and they really never make the blog. today, i am going to put some of those random thoughts in writing. in between my meals & moves, of course, because otherwise there would be no photos. and i know the only reason you read my blog is for my sub-par photographs. right? of course, right.

day #3 of the no sugar added challenge went off without a hitch. because some of you mentioned you would be interested in seeing what i am eating throughout this self imposed challenge, i went ahead and documented all of it. feel free to skim over the detailed eats and skip straight to the high quality random blabber. enticing, i know.

breakfast: 1 cup puffed brown rice + 1/4 cup old fashioned oats + 3/4 cup skim milk & 1 whole egg + 2 egg whites + 21 seasoning salute.

IMG_2009

280 calories, 30g protein, 40g carbs, 2g fat, 12g sugar (from milk)

you didn’t think i wouldn’t find a way to eat cereal, did you? i am a cereal whore. this puffed rice cereal is ONE ingredient long: puffed brown rice. can’t beat that. well, unless you have kamut puffs.. which are even better.. anyway, this was great.

IMG_2004

more eggs. i need to get my butt to costco to buy more. i threw a yolk in today for good measure and some added calories / fat.

IMG_2006

this morning i saw that the livingsocial.com deal was right up my alley.. $20 for a manicure/pedicure.  i have been in the market for a pedicure and i never have had a manicure (aside from when i have gotten fake nails—ugh, never again!) and i typiaclly pay $25 for a pedicure, so i swooped up the deal. utah folks, there is still time!

image

i am addicted to the group discount websites. i can’t stop buying things i don’t need.

lunch: half a block of extra firm tofu [diced] + half a large baked sweet potato [diced] + 1/2 cup cottage cheese + ~2 tsp braggs liquid aminos.

IMG_2014

360 calories, 33g protein, 48g carbs, 6g fat, 17g sugar (14g from potato and 3g from cottage cheese)

not one, not two but THREE of my nosy co-workers came into my office while i was eating lunch today and asked me what the hell i was eating. i think these guys have never seen tofu before. i really wish they would just leave me alone while i ate lunch.. but that’s not happening anytime soon.

IMG_2016

anyway, back to the food. this random combo was so tasty! even though it is a little boring to the eye, it was delicious and i loved the various textures.

speaking of co-workers.. i have never mentioned that i run a window company. yeah.. that’s my “day job”.  how have i failed to tell you guys that? not sure. yep. that’s what i do.  i don’t have a real title. i just kind of do it all.. anything that is thrown my way! anyway, we make windows, and i realized a lot of you guys are local. and some of you might need replacement windows. we have them in our house so when i say they are awesome windows, i speak from experience. plus, we are the only company that builds our own windows locally. gotta support the local economy, right? anyway, case in point: if you need/want vinyl windows in your house, just holler! i can get you the janetha special aka a real good deal. i have no idea why i never thought to clue you in on that hook up before!

snack: 1/2 cup plain fat free greek yogurt + large and in charge banana + 1 TB organic peanut butter.

IMG_2020

280 calories, 16g protein, 39g carbs, 8g fat, 22g sugar (16g from banana, 1g from PB and 5g from yogurt)

the organic PB at costco has two ingredients: peanuts and salt. no sugar here, mister. my jar is almost gone, though. when it is, i want to try to make my own sweetener-free maple nut butter. stay tuned.

IMG_2023

this next random thought is more for those in weight loss mode.. so if that doesn’t apply to you.. i suggest you skip it. i know people sometimes get offended with things related to what i am about to type. there’s your disclaimer.

because i am not eating sugar this week, i couldn’t use my usual defense tactics while baking.  after work, i had to bake a batch of peanut butter chip brownies for the winner of mara’s flea market, and that had “batter licking” written all over it. the batter is sinfully delicious.  usually when i bake, i chew a piece of gum so i don’t consume mass amounts of batter and/or cookie dough.  it’s a good method and it works for me.  well, since i can’t chew gum this week, i had to recruit good, old fashioned self control.  while baking, i was wearing a pair of jeans that haven’t fit for quite awhile (and they fit now—yay!) and actually used THAT as my motivation to not have even the tiniest lick of the batter.  sooo, i got to thinking, an even better way to not take random bites, licks or tastes while baking is to wear a pair of jeans that are a little too snug.  that one pair of jeans you are working so hard to get into. you know how uncomfortable it is to be squeezed into a pair of too-tight jeans, right? it’s basically the only thing i can think about when i have them on. licking brownie batter bowls isn’t going to make those jeans fit.. so next time you are having a hard time resisting those beaters, just throw on a pair of jeans you are working on fitting into.  i’m pretty impressed at how well this method worked for me and wanted to share it with you.

and ashley, your brownies are on their way!

image

speaking of baked goods..remember that one time i got married? and remember how i had the dopest houndstooth cake?

image

well, my cake maker has a blog now. and he posted about our cake. and i wanted to share that with you. so click here to see the cake post. and if you are in utah and are in the market for a cake.. adam is your man. his cakes are ridiculous, delicious and amazing.

well.. that is all i have for you guys tonight. i have to go get to work on dinner—fish tacos! i got a pound of fresh opah from the fish market and have been wanting to make fish tacos ever since marshall agreed to start eating fish.

i will post how they turned out tomorrow.

in the meantime, if you want to hear more from me, check out my guest post on get healthy with heather! i talk about three of my favorite grains and there is a delicious recipe for a three grain mediterranean salad.

image

yum.

hope this post was random enough for you.

BYE!

Qs~

1. do you ever buy from any group coupon websites? what deals have you purchased? in addition to the one i got above, i have purchased several restaurant deals, summer passes to the water park (can’t wait!), one to american apparel and one to a frame store. i always wait til the last minute to use them.. right up until the day they expire! fail.

2. do people ever give you a hard time and critique your meals? how do you handle it? i used to get really frustrated when people tried to make fun of the way i eat.. but these days i am so used to it that i shrug it off and tell them to go away.

Heather April 27, 2011 at 6:19 pm

oh my word, your cake is AWESOME! i kind of want to get married again so i can steal it…

sofia April 27, 2011 at 6:22 pm

love the random post. and the large and in charge banana comment. and the weird lunch mix that people harassed you for.

1. obsessed with groupon, living social, giltcity, dealist… the list goes on. there are so many deals in nyc and i wake up to 15 emails from different deal websites every morning. shit is bananas. i buy restaurant deals all the time… taking mom out for mother’s day dinner with one, cinco de mayo with ladyfriends next week for another, and all of my yoga I buy through the deal websites too. i am officially obsessed.

2. i am the same way about the food talk. it used to piss me off so much and really hurt my feelings, but i kind of don’t give a damn anymore. what works for me works, so leave me alone, people. i find that in social work people bother me less as compared with more corporate environments… but maybe that’s just my two internship experiences. we shall see.

Lauren April 27, 2011 at 6:22 pm

You did great with the no sugar thing!! I hate when people comment on my lunches. I don’t comment as they shove big macs in their face. LoL Maybe I should start. :)

lenniejane555 April 27, 2011 at 6:23 pm

I’m wearing snug jeans right now to keep me from snacking while I work! I don’t see anything wrong with it…

I don’t really get a hard time from what I’m eating, but my family thinks it’s crazy that I measure my food. I was measuring out a serving of ice cream when my sister was in town and she was so confused.

Holly @ The Runny Egg April 27, 2011 at 6:26 pm

I actually just started buying a groupon here and there — I haven’t cashed any of them in though. I have a wine tasting one that we will hopefully use in the next month or so. Good deal on the mani/pedi! That is cheap!

applesnoats April 27, 2011 at 6:32 pm

i seriously want to meet whoever invented groupon and living social because they are my heroes!!!
also, your making sugar free look good keep it up!

Lee April 27, 2011 at 6:33 pm

I have bought various deals from Groupon and Living Social. It’s usually restaurants but i have also bought some of those canvas prints.

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) April 27, 2011 at 6:38 pm

“do people ever give you a hard time and critique your meals? “-
ALL the time!! Mostly raw, mostly vegan, mostly GF meals…yes, lots of “what is THAT?” is uttered. But my friends and coworkers are used to me by now :)

The brownies…nice.

Gum trick. I will remember that when I am baking for my blog. The days I make 3 recipes in a day, stand in my kitchen and recipe create and photograph food all day.

Congrats on your guestie, fitting into your jeans, and thanks for the window co info. I actually didnt know what specifically you did.

Paige is Running Around Normal April 27, 2011 at 6:43 pm

I cannot wait for this sweetener free maple PB!!!

Katie April 27, 2011 at 6:44 pm

Awesome job with the no sugar! It makes me want to tackle this challenge, too – I can’t even imagine how hard it would be – I like your ‘snug jeans trick’ though – I’ll have to keep that one in mind.

I never buy group website coupons, I always tell myself I should – but then end up feeling guilty before I purchase because i never really need whatever it is I’m about to buy.

Everyone I work with gives me crap for how I eat. Like you, I used to mind, but now it’s just sort of normal. I expect it, and just embrace it with a laugh.

a taste of health with balance April 27, 2011 at 6:44 pm

yes, people at work use to make comments allllll of the timeeee it got to be sooo so annoying that it almost got to the point where i wanted to eat so fast and at a different time just so noone would bother me. i enjoy my healthy meals, i don’t need you breathing down my throat asking me what the hell i’m eating and then you complain you can’t maintain weight loss after you got off your 500 calorie diet of blueberries and diet coke (true story.)
WHEW! now i feel better :) i did learn to shrug it off though… :)

lowandbhold April 27, 2011 at 6:47 pm

I’m obsessed with group deals! I have an addiction.

Brittany April 27, 2011 at 6:48 pm

My goodness Janetha, people are ALWAYS commenting on WHAT I eat, if not HOW MUCH, or how OFTEN. They don’t understand I eat 6 meals a day therefore they can be smaller. And they get really nosy as to what I’m eating, then if it’s not to their liking, they scoff in disgust. I try soo hard not to let it bother me, hopefully in time i’ll be able to blow it off like you!

Amy April 27, 2011 at 6:53 pm

Thanks for posting some of your no sugar added eats today —
And yea, people can be a bit too curious sometimes, especially if you are trying to enjoy your eats!

Eden April 27, 2011 at 6:55 pm

I feel like a privledged “meals and moves” reader that I know what your day job is. Yay to local businesses indeed!

I got a cleaning sevice off giltgroup.com. It was awesome. Two days of deep household cleaning for 65 bucks! Cause lord knows I HATE cleaning toilets and sinks!

And no one really comments about what I eat…cause they no I have a sharp tongue and they are likely to end up crying if they dare comment about me food.

Trisha April 27, 2011 at 6:58 pm

I bought $50 worth of fresh produce from Winder for $20 from groupon. SCORE!

Carbzilla April 27, 2011 at 6:59 pm

I finally had to stop buying Groupons but I still have a Barre workout and housecleaning to go. I’ve moved on to discount shopping sites for the home – yikes. I also got great Restaurant.com coupons lately – $25 off for $2!

Sarah April 27, 2011 at 7:10 pm

oh i love group deal sites! :) i’ve bought lots of restaurant deals and a yoga pass.

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine April 27, 2011 at 7:23 pm

Love Groupon and Living Social!! I have a few that I need to use now, actually. NYC is the best, because 75% of them are cool restaurant deals!

lifttorun April 27, 2011 at 7:34 pm

I am loving your lunch you got going on there.

People are always critiquing what I eat and how much I eat. I eat a lot and apparently no one thinks so.

ashley hutton April 27, 2011 at 7:36 pm

that’s me! that’s me! i’m ashley and i’m getting THOSE brownies! i can’t wait! thanks janetha! i made the blog world….now if only i could draw attention to my little blog! :)

janetha April 28, 2011 at 8:08 am

i didn’t realize you had a blog! i will link back to you next time :)

Carin April 27, 2011 at 7:43 pm

i made your tofu scramble tonight. DELISHUSSSSS. i used the spice mix from the scrambled tofu on post punk kitchen, but used your peppers/onions/avocado/deliciousness. i also added mushrooms and roasted broccoli. carnivorous boyfriend ate it up and said (without prompting) that it was good. wINNING!

Allison @ Food For Healing April 27, 2011 at 7:52 pm

kamut puffs are better! ha
i look at the groupon things once and again, but have never bought any, who knows maybe one day.
no one has said anything negative about my meals, my blog is so small and doesn’t get that much traffic, but the people that do visit regularly rock and i love them all and they always say nice things lol

Mama Pea April 27, 2011 at 8:16 pm

I always chew gum while I am baking! Great tip :)

Pea Daddy is addicted to Groupon. I only buy it if it is something I was going to buy anyway or if he isn’t the person to tell me about it. I’m evil like that…heh heh.

People used to make comments about my food all the time but they don’t anymore. Now they just feel the need to confess their “food sins” to me, like I am going to judge them. It’s almost as annoying.

Have a great night!!!

melissa April 27, 2011 at 8:18 pm

People ALWAYS ask what I’m eating… I used to work reception at a day care and everyday at lunch there would be ATLEAST 5 people asking what conconction I brought that day. I just told them exactly what it was and went right along with my business. MOST of those people would be heading to Church’s Chicken or McDonald’s so it didn’t bother me.

I always feel that I can reach more people living a healthy life than I can preaching about a healthy life.

katshealthcorner April 27, 2011 at 8:38 pm

I aam so glad that you are enjoying your challenge!! :)

Salah April 27, 2011 at 9:00 pm

that 3-grain salad looks sooo bomb!!! YuM!

Annette @EnjoyYourHealthyLife April 27, 2011 at 9:23 pm

GREAT random post! I like the jeans tip-I have mentioned that to clients before ;)

I totally used to get annoyed when coworkers would ask what I was eating…NOW I proudly tell ’em that it is good-for-me food and list off all the foods inside of it (usually a ginormous salad or leftovers from dinner). They say that is nice and walk away, and never ask again ;) haha.

Groupons would be too tempting for me…and my buying habits!

marissa April 27, 2011 at 9:55 pm

i just used a Groupon for Bath and BodyWorks. i spent $15 on $30 worth of stuff. i bought 3 gigantour candles, 2 in my fave scents and 1 new scent.

for 10 years i was vegetarian. my family actually criticized me the most, which was really frustrating. they eat really poorly and did not teach me how to eat well, so i’ve struggled with how to eat healthy my whole life. but it has made me a stronger, more independent woman. :)

Kristina @ spabettie April 27, 2011 at 10:26 pm

we do many groupons, living social, mobba… most for restaurants, a few spas, one hair place and a boot camp and art supply store most recently. hmm… I guess I buy a lot! :) we LOVE them though, and I really try to only buy ones for places I think I’d be using anyway.

I remember the first time I saw your cake, thinking how much I would LOVE that. (I am a FREAK for houndstooth!). I love that cake!

The Sometimes Healthy Girl April 27, 2011 at 10:30 pm

I totally relate to people giving you a weird time about what you eat. I definitely go through that, but the blog is helping me embrace it :-) Now all my coworkers can’t wait to see what I come up with next!

raluca April 28, 2011 at 12:09 am

Are you just cutting out processed sugary foods or did you intend to cut out all sugars?
because bananas are full of natural sugar;-)

other than that: awesome eats. gonna buy some sweetpotatoes today.

raluca April 28, 2011 at 12:10 am

ok, ok got it… lol, just finished reading the- no sugar added-blogpost.

MelissaNibbles April 28, 2011 at 1:28 am

I subscribe to the group deal sites, but there’s never anything I want and when there is, it’s always two hours away and I’ll end up spending more on gas. F that.

BrocStar April 28, 2011 at 2:14 am

I’ve tried something like that jean method when running. I used to eat a tiny amount of chocolate right before my run when I wasn’t feeling it. The taste of the chocolate in my mouth made me run harder. Worked for me!

1970kikiproject April 28, 2011 at 3:12 am

i adore your random posts! you can go random any day of the week.
i DID know you worked for the window company…i think you referenced it when you talked about how you and marshall met…(?) – feel for you with the co-workers comments. i got that all the time with my tuna+fruit yogurt mix – don’t knock it til you try it, people!
haha, fake nails was one of my New Experiences, and i think once was enough! never had a pedi…enjoy your pampering time! never used groupon…i think i’d be sucked in easily for stuff i don’t need!
way to go on the no sugar challenge! keep up the good work!!
and the brownies look divine!

Susan April 28, 2011 at 5:06 am

I heard that jeans trick on Oprah before!! (ugh, I just admitted I watch Oprah, ugh) I actually attibute some of my recent weight gain to the fact that I worked in yoga pants. I couldn’t tell that I was gaining weight! Now I have no choice to wear yoga pants all the time because my jeans don’t fit.

My hometown is too small to have group coupons. I miss them!

Also, I used to get really bothered when people made comments about my food too. But now I’m used to it. My most common defense now is offering them a bite, and when they shake their heads in disgust I laugh at them and turn the joke around on to them ;)

pawsitivelife April 28, 2011 at 5:08 am

People critique my meals all the time. Ironically most of the critique come from fellow vegetarians who tell me what I should or shouldnt eat. Well there is no specific “type” of vegetarian, we should all eat what we want without judgement.
I love group buying sites! They are a recent discovery. I only used one so far but I am getting a hair cut/dye/style on sun with another one :)

Erica April 28, 2011 at 5:09 am

What a great mani/pedi deal!! I love living social and groupon and buy off of them on the regular. In fact, we’re going to dinner on Friday using a groupon- can’t wait! Puffed rice or wheat cereal is awesome. I actually like it on top of/mixed into my smoothies.

Pure2raw twins April 28, 2011 at 5:21 am

for years people have made fun of the way I eat and it is still really hard for me sometimes. But I am better at letting it go.

withasideofhope April 28, 2011 at 5:21 am

I’ve never bought anything from those deal sites. I really want to but I never see any good deals local to me! Gr! That is an incredible deal for a mani/pedi! I wish there was a deal like that around me! :)

Your wedding cake was awesome! I love it!!! So unique and original! :)

brandi April 28, 2011 at 6:05 am

I’ve done the jeans trick too :) it’s crazy how well it works!

Michelle April 28, 2011 at 6:33 am

I’m glad to hear that your no sugar added week is still going well. I like the idea of using tight jeans as portion control. I do that from time to time, mostly if I’m going out to a decadent meal, it reminds me to choose an appetizer or dessert, not both!

So about the nosy coworkers, what do you say to them? I have one coworker who stops by constantly to talk about my food. He reads my blog so I’m assuming he thinks I always want to talk about food, but sometimes I just want to eat! I’m running out of nice ways to deflect him.

One more thing, I tried hot yoga yesterday and it was great! I haven’t been that sweaty in ages. I can’t wait to do it again!

Gillian April 28, 2011 at 7:07 am

I need to use your baking tips, I’m a cookie dough MACHINE!

I love groupon! I buy them for things I know I’ll use- dinners, yoga passes, and recently a mani pedi too! They book up quickly so I’ve been waiting a month for my appointment, but it’s next week and I can’t wait!

And I get made fun of all the time at work for how I eat, but then I bring in baking and they all ask me to cook for them…so ya win some ya lose some!

natalie (the sweets life) April 28, 2011 at 7:09 am

I buy way too many group deals…2 this week already! But they’re usually worth it so I don’t feel too bad :)

thetwentyfifthyear April 28, 2011 at 8:18 am

“i am a cereal whore” <— BAHAHA

No judging on what I make….cuz I don't cook! Can't make somethin' out of nothin'!

Love me some Groupon but at the same time I get tired of the same old deals. I feel like I subscribe to 10 different kinds of daily deals so usually it's just delete delete delete.

Nicole C April 28, 2011 at 8:19 am

I buy stuff off Groupin all the time! When my birthday rolled around last year I had stocked enough up so I could get a spray tan and facial and even dinner! Love them! I have 2 more to use since the bootcamp one was up. Truth be told the bootcamp at UNLV was much more challenging.

I don’t get critiqued but I used to get picked on and annoyed about my lack of vegetable eating!

todayilovemylife April 28, 2011 at 8:31 am

I have never used groupon. Can you believe it? I probably need to start. It will give me something to do at work. lol. Your wedding cake was sooooo good! I was surprised b/c usually fondant is disgusting, but your guy knows his stuff (and frosting!)! xoxo

Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather April 28, 2011 at 8:48 am

I find it very irritating when people make comments about my food, but only because they’re usually negative in some way. If it’s a compliment, bring it on!

Love the random posts Janetha. Thanks again for doing the guest post, it was amazing!

Rachel (Olalliberry) April 28, 2011 at 9:27 am

Great job sticking to your sugar-free challenge! I like your tip about chewing gum while baking, that is a great idea.

I think there’s a lot more awareness of healthy eating nowadays, so sometimes people who are nosy about healthy meals are really just curious. Hopefully “healthy” will become “normal” soon.
