you tell me.

by Janetha on April 10, 2011

in meals

four hours, four stores, $200 and one large americano later.. i am home.

i am FULLY stocked up on groceries, caffeine and flowers for the kitchen table.

here are a few scenes from sunflower market.. sometimes i just can’t help myself.

sunflower market’s new line of cereals are designed IDENTICAL to kashi’s.

IMG_0465

for comparison purposes, here is what the kashi golean box looks like (i had one in my kitchen):

IMG_0982

pretty similar, right? they have almost identical nutrition stats and ingredients, as well. and a box of this stuff is $2.99 compared to the $4.59 kashi golean counterpart.

you tell me: should generic / grocery store brands be able to totally rip off name brand product designs?

i found myself in the peanut butter aisle even though i definitely do NOT need any peanut butter.  strange how i am just drawn to it.  but it was a good thing i wandered that way, because LOOK what i found!!

IMG_0469

mighty maple peanut butter for $2.97?! it was a sign from god. mighty maple is my favorite kind of peanut butter ever. EVER, people. i stocked up!

you tell me: if your favorite (non perishable) food product was on sale for 35% off, and you weren’t currently OUT of said product, how many would you stock up on?

i had chobani on my list.. what else is new? marshall eats 2 or 3 (sometimes 4) chobanis each day. when i got to the chobani section, this is what i saw:

IMG_0467

WHAT? where is the chobani?! check out the sign:

IMG_0466

blast. people love it way too much! i wasn’t about to buy a different kind of greek yogurt. nothing is quite like chobani when it comes to flavored greek yogurt. (when it comes to plain, i can tolerate oikos and i do like fage—but flavored has to be chobani.)  lucky for me, i already had picked up a 12 pack from costco and was just planning to get other flavors at sunflower. chobani crisis averted, not to worry.

you tell me: if something you are brand-loyal to is out of stock, do you buy a different brand or go to a different store to find YOUR brand?

i finally found this bar:

IMG_0964

i stopped eating luna bars awhile back (i used to eat them almost daily) because i prefer the simply bar (based on protein statistics and ingredients). but i have seen this chocolate coconut luna bar around blog land and really wanted to try it, so i snagged it.

IMG_0974

oh. my. gosh.

IMG_0975

let me tell you guys, this bar tastes exactly like a samoa girl scout cookie. EXACTLY, people.

IMG_0978

you know what else? their pepperment flavor tastes exactly like a girl scout thin mint. true story.

let’s take a look at the stats:

IMG_0970IMG_0969

not bad in terms of calories, carbs and fiber. i do wish it had a bit more protein.. but 9 grams is still pretty good. in a perfect world, the sugar grams would be lower and the protein grams higher.

the ingredient list, unfortunately, is as long as randy the basset hound. it is all the writing below the white box.

IMG_0972

however, the bar IS all natural, mostly organic and there are no funky hydrogenated oils.. something the girl scouts can’t say about their cookies.

IMG_0973IMG_0971

the label boasts “nutrition” and there are several vitamins and nutrients in the bar (see the label image above).

IMG_0966

and, like i said, the taste is out of this WORLD.

i know that eating one of these is wayyy better for me than eating a stack of girl scout cookies. however, i am still on the fence about whether or not this should be considered a good go-to snack due to some of the label downfalls.

so..

you tell me: luna bars. are they a good, healthy snack or just a glorified candy bar/cookie?

either way, you can bet i will be buying another chocolate dipped coconut luna bar. yes, they are that amazing.

time to make taco salad and then head to the movies! we are seeing “your highness”—can’t wait!

Um, I totally loved this post. It was so much fun. I perhaps might be stealing this idea from you!!!

Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food April 10, 2011 at 5:10 pm

Loving the photoblogging of the grocery store trip!

I think it’s great for readers to see how a health conscious blogger makes buying decisions. :)

Tessa at Amazing Asset April 10, 2011 at 5:11 pm

Hi Janetha!

I saw that sign today about Chobani at my grocery store, took a picture and posted it today as a matter of fact! I was quite shocked when I saw it but decided to get Fage instead even though it’s much more expensive…grrr!
I have never actually tried a Luna bar, but will now. Thanks for the review!

Eden April 10, 2011 at 5:12 pm

Ha, you need to stop speaking so highly if chobani! Or maybe it’s their commercials.

Anyhow you’ve got to see “Arthur”. I thought it would be kinda lame but it was hilarious.

Lauren @chigallauren April 10, 2011 at 5:13 pm

LOVE this post…so fun seeing everyone’s groceries :)

Holly @ The Runny Egg April 10, 2011 at 5:15 pm

I loved all of your polls!

To be honest I don’t mind when a generic brand rips off the real brand’s packaging, I just get frustrated with myself when I accidentally buy the generic and it isn’t the same as the real thing (taste or nutrition wise) – but that is my own fault for not paying attention!

Kristina @ spabettie April 10, 2011 at 5:20 pm

haa! I agree with Eden, perhaps we’re all just talking too much about how awesome Chobani is… ;)

I love all of the polls, but think it’s LAME PANTS to rip off a big name brand’s design. we already know you’re copycatting the product, have SOME originality!

I will be on the lookout for the samoa-flavored Luna…

Lee April 10, 2011 at 5:25 pm

Im not a huge fan of bars but that coconut one is pretty good. Have you tried the new Luna Chocolate Chunk? Also quite good.

Cathy K April 10, 2011 at 5:26 pm

i totally love participating in polls – this was super fun, j! and polls about grocery shopping – we’re talking A+ fun, now!
luna bar: argh, another flavour i have not seen in canada. maybe in 5 years (not kidding) we’ll finally see it!!
enjoy your movie!

a taste of health with balance April 10, 2011 at 5:28 pm

what a fun post, i love it!

Renée April 10, 2011 at 5:29 pm

I STILL can’t find those Luna bars, I’ve been looking for months! And I’m totally jealous of your PB bargain. The nearest place to me that sells PB&Co charges SIX dollars a jar! Anywhere else I’ve seen them, they’re <$4!

oatsandspice April 10, 2011 at 5:36 pm

I just bought that luna bar last week and now I am super excited to try it!

And I can’t believe how similar the cereal boxes are – where in the US are sunflower markets located? I have never heard of them before!

brookeyool April 10, 2011 at 5:56 pm

I think it’s only in certain parts of the West? I know there’s one in Tucson, near my family. (Not up here in WA, tho. Sadface.)

janetha April 11, 2011 at 8:42 am

Well I am in Utah and I know Colorado has them, too.

Mary Beth April 10, 2011 at 5:39 pm

Love those Lunas! And I agree–peppermint stick is just like a thin mint :)

Lauren April 10, 2011 at 5:42 pm

Ahhh, dying to try this Luna bar! Especially now that I know it tastes like a cookie. :)

Callie @ Callieflower Kitchen April 10, 2011 at 5:48 pm

I love Luna bars. Not as much as I love Chobani, but pretty close ;)

They only have 4 flavours here in Canada, 2 of which are flavours I like, but the chocolate peppermint stick is better than any other energy bar I’ve ever had. Exactly like the thin mint cookies, which I go absolutely insane for. It and the coconut ones are my faves and I buy boxes of them whenever I’m down in the US.

I’ve tried Simply Bars, and while they’re okay, they’re a little bit bland for me. I’d rather go for a bar that I truly enjoy and still has very good nutritional stats than a bar that has excellent stats and won’t really satisfy me.

J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) April 10, 2011 at 5:57 pm

So many goodies in this post, lol! I wouldn’t be surprised if Kashi made the generic brand for the store. Many companies actually make the product in the stores label. We used to do this with apple cider for a chain of grocery stores, and I know it’s common practice by a lot of manufacturers. So they’re probably not stealing, the company probably helps them do it. The only thing about generic is the box isn’t as pretty or sturdy, and sometimes it’s a watered down product compared to name brand. I buy a lot of generic store brand items, though! Sometimes, I prefer them!

Chobani is amazing. So affordable and tasty! I like oikos and fage, too.

Abby April 10, 2011 at 5:59 pm

All the Chobani flavors that I like were gone too! Grr–Target is the only place that carries it here!

julie April 10, 2011 at 6:04 pm

deej has like 5 of those coconut lunas in her bag and the other day i was like ‘oh! are these good?’ and she goes do you think girl scout samosas are good? and i said is the sky blue? hahaha glad you guys agree!

meghan April 10, 2011 at 6:16 pm

My store can’t keep chobani on the shelves either. It’s always a surprise when they have the flavor that I want. I can’t believe how incredibly popular it is! But because it’s so good, I guess it shouldn’t be that surprising.

Sarah B. April 10, 2011 at 6:26 pm

I wish we had Chobani and coconut luna bars up in Canada!

What did you think of “Your Highness”? I was really disappointed. It had some ok moments, but over all I thought it was probably better of being rented :(

Errign April 10, 2011 at 6:29 pm

I do like some Luna flavors, but I do think they’re more cookie-y than standard bars.

My store was out of chobs today too!

Allison @ Food For Healing April 10, 2011 at 6:32 pm

i admire you for going out shopping for 4 hours.
I seriously get too blah on sundays to do that even though i should, and I would actually love to haha. i think i will start doing that again, would make my life easier thats forsure.

Sarah April 10, 2011 at 6:35 pm

i have a hard time with a lot of snack bars, especially if they have mile long ingredient lists. i would always rather eat real foods (apple, banana, pb, etc.), if i’m in a crunch, i grab a bar like a larabar with like 5 ingredients. i don’t really know how protein bars compare though – i’m not very familiar with them!

Stephanie @cookinfanatic April 10, 2011 at 6:38 pm

I love that you are Chobani loyal!!! :)

Christin@purplebirdblog April 10, 2011 at 6:41 pm

Your polls are so much fun! :)

lindsay April 10, 2011 at 6:41 pm

oh I know those price tags! I was just there today! and no chobani either! They are on a roll! Now i must try that luna bar, I always try new flavors. No matter the brand. Nice deals JG!

simplyshaka April 10, 2011 at 6:50 pm

Love this post! I am officially on the prowl to find that Luna flavor, yumm!

Interesting about the Cho, I went to a supermarket this wknd since they had them on sale $1 and had a similar sign on the wall like that. What is going on Chobani??

Krystina (Organically Me) April 10, 2011 at 7:53 pm

I don’t think they were properly prepared for the mass amount of people who would buy it due to their new ads. It’s been around for years, but ads make a world of difference.

Fage would probably be facing a similar situation, if, you know, the yogurt wasn’t outrageously expensive.

Mama Pea April 10, 2011 at 6:50 pm

Well, that was fun! I got all of them right :)

I tried that Luna the other day (DELICIOUS!), but like you, I’m not exactly proud of it. My solution is to buy one, but not to consider it a “meal.” I’m actually one of those people that can have a “bite” of something and stop, so generally if I buy a Luna, I’ll just cut off a little bite to have as a little something sweet after lunch or dinner. Problem solved!

Liza April 11, 2011 at 5:40 am

I envy your self-control, Mama Pea!

janetha April 11, 2011 at 8:34 am

I do the same thing! I actually only had half the bar. 1/4 of it on my way home from the stores and 1/4 of it after dinner.

Carbzilla April 10, 2011 at 7:13 pm

I have big and mini Luna Bars in my purse in case of emergency. There’s one flavor, that I’m totally spacing on right now, that tastes exactly like one of my favorite childhood cookies!

Wow – I’m glad I have free Siggi’s coupons to use until this Chobani thing blows over. I’m surprised they weren’t a little more prepared once they started their tv campaign. Poor communication from marketing to production I’m guessing. I haven’t been to Costco in so long that I don’t even know if ours carries it.

Have a great Monday!

Ash April 10, 2011 at 7:23 pm

I really like that flavor of Luna, but to me they definitely are more cookie type thing. They also have this…medicine-y taste to me. I wonder if anyone else feels that way? haha.

That flavor definitely doesn’t taste like a Samoa to me at all though LOL. Especially since there’s no caramel.

Chobani is definitely getting popular! I always see people reaching for it in Target!

jill (i run i eat) April 10, 2011 at 7:23 pm

I love when there is a generic of healthy foods. It makes it so much cheaper to eat healthy. The two targets by me had chobani but last week both were out of mango (my fav)and this week only one of them had it.

Sweet Cheeks April 10, 2011 at 7:29 pm

Ohhh that will forever be my favorite girl scout cookie. I need to get my hands on that bar!! And seriously..what is up with my grocery stores not selling Chobani? I want in on that action!

mering4 April 10, 2011 at 7:37 pm

Did you know that if you do see your favorite nonperishable good on sale, you should stock up? They usually only go on sale once every three months!! I can’t remember where I read that, but I just read it a couple days ago! Funny that you blogged about that! :)

applesnoats April 10, 2011 at 7:38 pm

mighty maple is HEAVEN!!!!im jealous:)

cbrady3 April 10, 2011 at 7:45 pm

I ADORE Luna Bars but tend to save them for dessert or an emergency snack because they are high in sugar. Smores if my favorite followed by iced oatmeal raisin!

Krystina (Organically Me) April 10, 2011 at 7:50 pm

No way! Our grocery store was out of Chobani too, so I snagged a big container of Cabot Greek yogurt. Sad day.

kbwood April 10, 2011 at 8:07 pm

MUST find that luna!
MIGHTY MAPLE!?!? omgahhhhhhhh. i need to move near you- cant find it ANYWHERE!

Erica D April 10, 2011 at 8:20 pm

Yeah Chobani! GET IT! That makes me happy to know that the company’s doing well.

I also stopped eating Lunabars a while ago (ok, when I stopped living at home and my dad didn’t buy them in bulk for the family…) and have since discovered that I like Kind Bars or Larabars more. But that looks like the Lunabar to end all Lunbars!

Bess April 10, 2011 at 8:25 pm

That luna bar looks amazing!! I want to try that flavor bad! And I never can find mighty maple PB but I stocked up on the dark chocolate dreams today! Obsessed.

Lettuce Choose Healthy April 10, 2011 at 8:57 pm

I love those luna bars.. they are more like a dessert snack!!

I just did a product review on them!

Mary (A Merry Life) April 10, 2011 at 9:32 pm

I loved all your polls!

I’ve always thought Luna bars were more of a dessert/cookie than a healthy snack. I still LOVE them, but I consider them a sweet when I eat them.

I can’t wait to try Mighty Maple PB when I’m back in the US. I’ve gotta find a store in TN that sells it so I can enjoy. Maple + peanut butter is a great combo.

sofia April 11, 2011 at 12:05 am

remember when i told you nyc supermarket prices are out of control? BT’s on a pb&co smoothie kick right now, and just spent $5.99 on white chocolate wonderful. ridic.

by the way, totally impressed with your meal planning and shopping efforts. i need to do that, but i feel like my life is so unpredictable right now, what with having an apartment i don’t actually live in and eating out a bit too often. sigh.

Salah April 11, 2011 at 2:42 am

I have to try that luna bar!! Sounds amazing!! :-) and taco salad sounds sooo good

Katie April 11, 2011 at 4:43 am

U are so creative! U always come up with some amazing post! How do you do it?! Especially with how busy you are!

I liked the luna bar, the chocolate chunk is bomb too! Chocolate Peppermint stick will always have my heart!

love you! Happy Monday! xoxo

How is your mom doing? xoxo

Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun April 11, 2011 at 4:52 am

We have such similar tastes. Although I have yet to find Mighty Maple in my area. Or the Cin Raisin Swirl. Sad day. I would have STOCKED UP too had I come across that sale.

I want to try that flavor Luna. I haven’t had Lunas in SO long because I have been trying to eat less bars except for Larabars. The Coconut Cream Pie Larabar is amazing though!

withasideofhope April 11, 2011 at 5:10 am

I love looking at what other people shop for at the supermarket! That is an incredible deal on pb & co peanut butter! I love their Dark Chocolate Dreams! That is by far my favorite! That is crazy how the generic cereal looks exactly like the Kashi one!

jodie April 11, 2011 at 5:26 am

I will eat luna bars every now and then, especially when I need chocolate fix. And yes I do love the Coconut flavor. I have never tried that brand of nut butter.

Nicole @ Fresh & Fit April 11, 2011 at 5:40 am

I love Peanut Butter & Co. peanut butter too. Have you ever had their dark chocolate peanut butter? It is heave in a jar!

fittingbackin April 11, 2011 at 5:56 am

Wow you got so much done! Thanks for your review – I haven’t seen this bar yet but if it tastes anything like a samoa I will look harder starting now! I loved your polls and took all of them!! I am all for some generic products – but think it’s sad when they look JUST LIKE the regular brand. Just feels like they’re riding the coattails of an established product who had to do all of the work to get where they are which is kind of sad to me. :(

brandi April 11, 2011 at 5:57 am

I am just going to say that I am TOTALLY jealous of the Mighty Maple. Not only is that Cheap! but I have NEVER been able to find it here! My stores usually carry cinnamon raisin (awesome), dark chocolate and the white chocolate. I love them all, but I’ve yet to find mighty maple!
