a whole lotta firsts.

by Janetha on April 2, 2011

in meals,moves

after a heart-pumping session at the gym yesterday afternoon (yay for not taking a third day in a row off from working out!), marshall and i cleaned up and headed to kristen & rory’s for a barbecue.

the first barbecue of the year, in fact!

IMG_0268

marshall wanted a burger and i wanted a salad, so we compromised and i had a hamburger salad and he had his burger! he stuffed his with bleu cheese.

IMG_0250IMG_0249

i watched.. and diligently ate pita chips & hummus.

IMG_0244

and snacked on some fresh fruit..

IMG_0264IMG_0265

i absolutely cannot wait for melon season. just sayin.

kristen was the grill masta.

IMG_0259

kane was on the lookout.

IMG_0261

when it was time to eat, i laid my burger patty atop a big bed of various salad greens and veggies—all straight from the whole foods salad bar. yep, lazy girl’s salad.

IMG_0273

it pains me to think about how i went 20 years of my life hating mustard. i love it now!IMG_0274

delicious.

this morning was another first for breakfast..

IMG_0279

cinnamon raisin bagel thin + mighty maple + banana & coffee + skim.

the part that was a first was the cinnamon raisin bagel thin. like i mentioned when i tried the whole wheat ones, you can’t eat these thinking you are eating a bagel. it’s not a bagel, no. but it is definitely tasty, yes. i dig ‘em.

IMG_0281

J mug o janetha java.

IMG_0283

next up: another first. a very, very, very big first!

IMG_0288

YOGA. i have never in my 27 years, 10 months and 1 day of being alive done yoga.  some people find that hard to believe—but i just never got around to it! my friend lindsay invited me to tag along to a free bikram yoga session, so i bit the bullet. now or never, right?

IMG_0286

we went to the bikram yoga sandy studio—here’s a tip, the first saturday of every month has a free 10 AM class for new students. so this was 90 minutes of free, hot fun.  i wasn’t sure what to expect, so i went in with an open mind. i mean, i have to figure out a way to touch my toes before the end of the year (it was my new years resolution) so i decided yoga was a good place to start.

image

it. was. hot. but it was also amazing! i actually really, really, REALLY enjoyed it. every sweaty minute. i am not a fan of posting post-workout sweaty photos of myself, but this is an exception. my hair was soaked through!

IMG_0284IMG_0285

yikes.

we ended up paying $20 for a month of unlimited classes—it is usually $100 a month, so this was a great intro deal. if you live in the area you should check it out!

i am going to try to go as much as i can this month.. but it takes about 30 minutes to GET to the studio, so we will see.  even if i only go 3 or 4 times, that is totally worth the twenty bucks.

IMG_0291

we felt much better once we got outside in the cool, breezy air!

on the way home i cheated and ate in the car—my breakfast was SO light (they said to show up to the class with an empty stomach) so i practically inhaled another first.

my first blueberry muffin larabar.

IMG_0294

loved it, but not my favorite. PB+J or cherry pie are my faves at the moment.

and i stopped into starbucks for my first iced americano of the year.  this had a splash of soy and a heavy sprinkle of cinnamon.

IMG_0296

yay for it being warm enough for iced coffees!

IMG_0300

and now i am lounging on my couch, eating bell peppers & hummus, after a nice long shower. is it weird that i feel like i just got a 90 minute massage instead of a workout?! i could get used to this yoga thing.

we start insanity tomorrow morning.. better get some R&R in while i can!

Qs~

1. what is one FIRST you have had lately? big or small.

2. yoga: love it? hate it? never done it? is there a kind you love? talk to me.

I love Honeydew!!! I hope it goes into season soon! :D

LOVE YOGA! :D

Freckled Foodie April 2, 2011 at 12:52 pm

you’re puuuurty :) that is all. :D

Abby April 2, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Melon season is one of the best things about summer–I love me some cantaloupe!

One first that I have had lately is the PB&J Larabar! Yum! :)

I have never done yoga. I think I am going to give it a shot after I run this half marathon I am training for–29 days to go! :)

Amanda April 2, 2011 at 1:06 pm

That’s a great deal for yoga! How cool! I’m jealous. I like yoga but don’t have enough experience with a specific type. I want to take more classes so I can determine what kind is my favorite.

I used to hate mustard too. It’s so delicious to me now.

Renée April 2, 2011 at 1:07 pm

I have that same mug, only mine has an ‘R’ on it :D

Ellie April 2, 2011 at 1:16 pm

I love Bikram Yoga!! I’ve been kinda wanting to go lately~but it can be a long process of getting ready, sweating, showering, etc. So I just don’t make time for it. And OOH mannnn I am such a mustard lover! I slather it on top of my food sometimes. :)

carly April 2, 2011 at 1:18 pm

wow janetha, serious props for starting your yoga career with bikram!! that’s by far the most intense yoga i’ve ever done, though i totally love it too. i couldn’t do it all the time but every once and while it’s just what i need. and all types of yoga make me feel like i’ve just gotten a massage – that’s the beauty of it :) keep it up and you’ll for sure be touching your toes soon.

movesnmunchies April 2, 2011 at 1:27 pm

ahhh yoga is a blast!! ive heard wishy washy things about that new larabar flavor too!

fforh April 2, 2011 at 1:27 pm

my first was making homemade pizza dough, never even attempted it before in my life! It turned out lovely
I’ve done a little bit of yoga at home using dvds and i liked it, a real class i think i could enjoy more though but just haven’t done it.

runyogarepeat April 2, 2011 at 1:50 pm

I’m so glad you loved yoga! I’ve never done Bikram, but I usually go to power yoga classes once or twice a week. It’s the perfect way to relax & workout and my muscles are always so thankful afterwards.

Cathy K April 2, 2011 at 1:52 pm

that’s a whole lotta variety of firsts, janetha! woo hoo!
LOVE YOGA. have yet to try bikram – on the 2011 Goals List. ashtanga is what i have done and i love the flow, the challenge, the poses. haven’t done it in a couple years, though, so would be right back at square one.
can’t wait for melon season!
this week i supervised suppertime for my two nieces, ages 4.5 and 18 months BY MYSELF! the were gems and we had a blast. solo auntie-ing was a success!!
enjoy the rest of your weekend! get ready for the INSANITY!!!

lindsay April 2, 2011 at 1:54 pm

thats a pretty good day of firsts. I like them all. Good sweat fest! My husband is obsessed with the new blueberry mufin bars. He searches for them all time!
;)

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) April 2, 2011 at 2:05 pm

ashtanga yoga is my go-to. It’s the “Father” of other disciplines of yoga like power, vinyasa, flow, which are all more movement-based/physically intense and that’s what i love. They are offshoots of ashtanga.

I am not the biggest bikram fan only b/c i prefer heat to be built organically as it will be with ashtanga or power-based styles. the room starts warm and then heat is built as the practice develops rather than walking into a 100F room off the bat.

I am sooo happy for you that you went to yoga!!!!! I feel like a door just opened for you that is going to change your life. Any kind of yoga is great, and the benefits transcend not just the physical/on the mat, but off the mat/emotional/mental/spiritual, too :)

Kristen April 2, 2011 at 2:10 pm

I taught my first lifting class today! It went awesome. I’ve taught two formats of kickboxing for several years now, (and lifted on my own for ever) and this was very very different. I’m on the regular rotation now. Very exciting :)

I *LOVE* yoga. I was not a fan at first because I am a cardio junkie, but this girl has been turned to the…chill side ;)

Hot yoga is my favorite kind of yoga – I always leave feeling really cleansed and rejuvenated!

sabrinarella April 2, 2011 at 2:21 pm

I wanna try bikram so bad!! There’s no where close enough (within 10 minutes) to me. Jeeaalloooous.

Holly @ The Runny Egg April 2, 2011 at 2:30 pm

$20/month sounds really good to me!

A first for me — going car shopping with my dad and he was the one looking for a car. Kind of boring but that is all that happened today!

thedelicateplace April 2, 2011 at 2:41 pm

but the WF salad bar is the best! i’ve never done bikram bc i didn’t want to be in a hot room lol. i have been practicing ashtanga (power yoga) for 2 years and love it. it makes my arms, shoulders and back really sculpted!

MelissaNibbles April 2, 2011 at 2:51 pm

I’m trying to get into yoga. I like to do it at home so I’ve never done Bikram. I know I would love it because I’m always cold. I would love to sweat my ass off.

Trisha April 2, 2011 at 2:52 pm

I’ve wanted to try that studio in Sandy for a while! There is actually one in Salt Lake too. I’ll have to hit it up soon!

Bridget April 2, 2011 at 3:02 pm

I LOVE bikram yoga. There are so many benefits to it — including dramatic improvement in flexibility. You will be touching those toes in no time!

Sarah April 2, 2011 at 3:18 pm

wow, i can’t believe the first time you went to yoga it was bikram! i always think bikram is for hard-core yogis. nice job!! :)

lindsay April 2, 2011 at 3:36 pm

thanks for coming with me neath!! i had so much fun!! can’t wait to go again!

Jess April 2, 2011 at 3:38 pm

I’ve never tried yoga, so I am glad to hear your thoughts! Something I want to try soon:)

Heather April 2, 2011 at 3:38 pm

We had out first BBQ of the year recently too…so fun!

Karen April 2, 2011 at 3:54 pm

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the cherry pie Larabars. I just discovered them about a month ago and fell in love at first bite!!

I have never tried yoga but I love reading about other bloggers experiences. Do you think you will try some yoga DVDs or just stick with the live classes?

janetha April 4, 2011 at 12:59 pm

I think I will stick to the live–I don’t love DVDs.

cbrady3 April 2, 2011 at 4:13 pm

I’ve been a Bikram addict for over a year now. I’m so so glad you tried it and loved it! The more you go the more cleansed and stretched you’ll feel. YAY!

My new thing lately is dried mango. YUM

sofia April 2, 2011 at 4:26 pm

1. first meatball sub, comin’ at me in a few hours for dinner. very excited!
2. YAY YOGA!!! so i kind of hate bikram, but i’m glad you liked it!! and i’m convinced if you tried a hot power vinyasa flow (my favorite) you’d think bikram was laaaame. power vinyasa is the shizzy. yes, the shizzy. i can write an essay about how yoga has changed me (not only physically but also emotionally), but i’ll spare your comment readers and you ;)

Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) April 2, 2011 at 4:28 pm

I *love* what little of yoga that I’ve actually done. I’ve never actually gone to a class, but that’s on my life’s to do list. There are some exceptionally good videos free on direct-tv that I regularly use, but a class would be awesome. :D

Errign April 2, 2011 at 4:36 pm

Hmmm, a first: Um, this one is embarrassing to fellow dog lovers…I took my five year old dog on his first walk around town. He’s just so bad at walking on a leash & so smart to wander back to wherever we walk that I have always walked him in the woods on trails.

I do like yoga, though I currently only go to the free mish-mosh sessions at my school. Homegirl’s on a budget, you see. :) I want to try hot yoga though – perfect because I’m living in Asheville NC this fall!

Faith April 2, 2011 at 4:52 pm

Right now, for the very first time, I’m making seitan myself!

If you liked the Bikram, you’d love a hot vinyasa flow – less repetitive than Bikram but equally sweaty! That’s a killer deal, though. I got a Groupon for a $29/unlimited month and felt like I’d gotten quite the steal!

Diana April 2, 2011 at 5:30 pm

Love that place mat with the little birdies. :)

#1 – had my first yard sale today (when I was the seller…except it was really hubby…haha)!
#2 – love it! but i injured my wrist awhile back and can’t really do yoga any more. :( luckily I dont need the wrist to zumba! ;)

a taste of health with balance April 2, 2011 at 5:33 pm

so jealous! wish i had a bikram class close by me. today was my first half marathon and totally crushed my goal time!! still on a runners high heh :)

Susan April 2, 2011 at 5:45 pm

1. what is one FIRST you have had lately? Caramel nut brownie luna bar! So delicious

2. yoga: love it? hate it? never done it? is there a kind you love? I’ve never done it.. however I should since it’s great for stretching out your muscles I hear!

PS – quick question about the BFL program (since you’re my inspiration I’m hoping you can answer!) – Can you schedule your free day on a different day then it was originally planned? i.e my free day is technically on Tuesday, but since I went to a friends house for supper and they ended up serving cake, I considered today to be my free day instead and plan to eat my regular 6 mini meals on Tuesday. Have you ever done this? I did my planned workout for the day but dinner wasn’t something I would consider to be BFL approved since it was a piece of cake..

Good luck with insanity!!!

janetha April 4, 2011 at 1:03 pm

Hey Susan! Take your free day whenever it is convenient for you!!

BroccoliHut April 2, 2011 at 6:04 pm

I like those cinnamon raisin bagel thins too! Great as a pre-workout snack with a little Laughing Cow. Love that placemat!

Ann April 2, 2011 at 6:19 pm

Janetha–I’ve been wanting to do yoga also, there’s a Bikram place close to my house. I’m chicken because i’ve never really done yoga and I’m thinking I”m going to be an uncoordinated clutz and the entire class will be watching me….did you feel like you could keep up with everything you needed to do in the class?

Erica April 2, 2011 at 6:19 pm

The spatula that says grill is awesomeeeeeeeeee- I want one. Any idea where its from??? kane is a gorgeous dog. Glad you guys had a fun night. Bikram is fabulous! I can’t really take regular yoga…my mind wanders too much- I just don’t have the right centering I guess. But the sweat induced by bikram? That I love. Hooray for the Americano- whoop! I’ve had a LOT of firsts lately with this baby on the way ;)

Page @ Good Clean Fun April 2, 2011 at 7:40 pm

so glad you liked yoga! i’ll warm you, it’s addictive, you start to see a difference in your flexibility and will feel better, then you’ll never want to stop. i’ve never done the hot yoga thing though. maybe one day i’ll bite the bullet and sweat my way through a session:)

meghan April 2, 2011 at 8:46 pm

i am thrilled that i found your blog today. i’ve recently been looking for more healthy cooking websites. my favorite is Gina’s Skinny Recipes, but I’ve also been trying to cut the grocery bill. Your cooking is both healthy and budget friendly, which I really appreciate. I added it to your reader just now and look forward to going through it tomorrow when i make my weekly grocery and menu lists. Do you have any suggestions for other blogs like yours that show you how to cook healthy and deliciously while using a few simple ingredients and not getting too over the top with a printer page full of ingredients? look forward to reading more!

lifttorun April 2, 2011 at 8:46 pm

I recently just got into yoga and I love it. It’s relaxing, yet challenging.

Megan@Dirty Dishes Daily April 2, 2011 at 11:59 pm

I watched the movie Die Hard for the first. And I actually really liked it.

Nicole M. G. April 3, 2011 at 5:45 am

Hmm…a first for me lately: braces at age 31! Yikes! And a liquid/soft foods diet to go along with it since along with braces, I am also rocking an upper lingual arch and can’t chew because the darn thing keeps hitting my teeth! I just had this all placed March 31 and I am already over it!

Never tried yoga…yet! I want to sooooo bad! It is so hard to find the time to do something for myself outside the home with two small kids and my husband and I work opposite shifts at work. But, my goal this year is to work it in!

Glad you loved it! Makes me want to try it more!

Eates-a-lot April 3, 2011 at 6:07 am

I just started yoga 2 months ago. I had the whopping cough for a long time and my body has struggling to breathe. I am totally addicted to it now. Depending on the type of yoga, sometimes it worse than doing a legs workout. I really love it.

I just went to a vintage clothing store of the first time. Absolutely loved it.

Lettuce Choose Healthy April 3, 2011 at 6:26 am

ive always wanted to try that yoga! There are no studios near me .. boo :-(

Amy April 3, 2011 at 6:50 am

I’ve only tried yoga a couple times. It’s ok, I like the good stretch I get, but I don’t think I’ll get a membership when my trial is over. If anything, I’ll do it at home on my own.

My new first is Body Rock!! Thanks to you I went to the site and am trying out the exercises at home with modifications since I don’t have any of the equipment for it.

The Sometimes Healthy Girl April 3, 2011 at 7:10 am

First: Starting a healthy living blog! I’ve wanted to do this forever and now I’m finally doing it :-)

Yoga: Absolutely hate it. I’ve tried so so hard to “embrace” the zen. Even once wrote a story for a Chicago publication about me, the non-yogi, trying to find a yoga class that works!
Check it out if you want: http://www.cheekychicago.com/yoga-for-the-non-yogi/

I was hoping after the story, I’d be a yogi…I’m not. haha

Love love love your blog!

kissmybroccoli April 3, 2011 at 8:28 am

Mmm, LOVE those cinna/raisin bagel thins! I got the idea from Julie over at PB Fingers to top them with cheese and egg and it is sooooo good! Perfect sweet/savory combo!

I’ve only done yoga once and it was more of a relaxing, slow paced one. I enjoyed it, but I’d really like to try more of the different types before deciding on it. Twenty bucks for a month unlimited is an incredible deal! I wish my little town HAD a studio!

I just bought my FIRST house!…and on the same day, had my FIRST wreck in my baby Vibe that I’ve had for 4 years! Now I am driving my FIRST rental car…and it’s totally badass by the way! ;)

Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) April 3, 2011 at 9:08 am

Yesterday was our first BBQ too! Although it was just B & me… and it was for a soup. I’m working on a version of Trader Joe’s roasted red pepper and tomato soup using the BBQ (or oven) :D I am pretty excited about it. Just working on a few tweeks, but I think it’s going to be YUMMY!

I’ve never taken a real yoga class, but have done gentle hatha yoga at home from yogadownload.com. I really love the way I feel when I stretch regulary. I need to find a studio that works with people who have spinal fusions.

Pat Braithwaite April 3, 2011 at 9:28 am

I had to laugh at your mustard comment. I DO NOT like mustard and I definitely don’t think I ever will.
I have always wanted to try yoga and still haven’t done it. I’m finding out there are alot of things I’ve waited a long time to do. Such as my first massage at age 50 and my first facial at age 54. It’s kind of crazy to me now. Hopefully, I will finally get to do yoga this year. I’m not good at going at it alone, so maybe I’ll find a buddy one of these days. We’ll see……….

lowandbhold April 3, 2011 at 3:13 pm

I looove yoga. I can’t do it on my own but any studio class – I’m in love.
