no fooling here.

in meals,moves

happy april!

did you remember to change your calendar?

IMG_0217

i did.

IMG_0220

all three of them. (hi HEAB!)

IMG_0224

so.. it’s april fools day.

IMG_0223

do you guys remember my april fools day prank last year? ha. typical. i am not pulling any april fools day jokes this year. not on you and definitely not on marshall! i did fool him last year and, while it was purely innocent (told him i ran out of gas), he got suuuper mad and we got in a fight. bless his sensitive soul. so this year, all pranks are off.

i do have a few things to inform you guys about april of that are totally, 100% on the real. no fooling here.

1. no alcohol april.

yesterday allison tweeted about an alcohol free april. behold:

image

and then brittany and kristina hopped on board, too.
image

it was official.

image

and that is how alcohol free april came to be.

okay, i rarely drink, so this isn’t a hard thing.. but it is a thing none the less.  and it is my thing. for april. so that’s that. hope on board if you want to, too.

2. getting back on track is HARD.

that is no joke, people! remember less than a week ago when i set goals and declared that i am going to get back into the groove of all my good habits? well, it’s been hard. harder than i expected.  but i am sticking to my guns AND staying accountable. so i want to go over the goals i set and check in.

  • drink a gallon of water daily
    • i have done this every day but yesterday. my stomach has been upset for two days (not sure why) and the water consumption has lacked. but i have been guzzling water like there’s no tomorrow and, consequently, i feel much less hungry!
  • eat at least 125 grams of protein daily—spacing it out at each meal
    • YES—i have really surprised myself with this one!
  • take all my vitamins & supplements regularly
    • no… i think it is time to bust out the grandma-style pill keeper. i just forget to take them!
  • stick to a workout schedule
    • sunday=HIIT, monday=lower body, tuesday=HIIT.. then wednesday? thursday? oh. i didn’t work out. either day. blowing it.
  • stop grabbing handful after handful of random stuff when i am at home just because it is there and i am bored (peanut butter filled pretzels, cereal, mary’s crackers, dark chocolate)
    • guess what? i did great with this sunday, monday and tuesday. then wednesday? thursday? blew it. the days i didn’t work out. the days i went home and felt sick and was just HOME.. with lots of things to snack on.  i need to purge my kitchen.
  • don’t eat while driving (i swear this is my downfall—when i eat my snack in the car i feel like i didn’t eat a snack at all)
    • this one has been a success!

so i am here to tell you, first hand, that once you fall out of good habits, getting back into them is HARD! maybe not for everyone, but it is hard for me! i think item of business #3 is going to help me stay in line…

3. let the insanity begin.

image

[source.]

i haven’t clued you guys in on my plans.. but this has actually been on my agenda for a little over a month now.  i have wanted to complete the 60 day insanity challenge ever since purchasing the DVDs.  marshall has started working out regularly so i asked him if he wanted to do the challenge with me. he said he wanted to take a bit of time to get into better shape first, but that we could do it come april.

well, april is here.

we are starting the insanity challenge on sunday. april 3. it is an 8 week challenge with a one week rest period in between–so 9 weeks total. this will set our finish date for june 4, right in time for summer!  i am excited to do insanity and even more excited that marshall will be doing it with me. i have done insanity on and off in the past (actually, i checked, and last april 4 i was doing an insanity workout!) but never for the full 60 days, adhering to the schedule 100%.  it will definitely be a challenge.

i’ve printed out the calendar, we will be taking our “before” photos on sunday and the insanity will begin!

what i am SCARED of is that we have made the decision to do insanity in the morning. um. do you know me? do you KNOW me?  i don’t do mornings, period, let alone WORKOUTS in the morning.  safe to say i am scared. real, real scared. hope it doesn’t take too long to get used to. what i love is that my workout will be done in the morning and when i get off work i can just relax.

still, i am scared. let it be known.

well those are my announcements. i leave you with friday’s eats so far.

breakfast: egg whites + cereal.

IMG_0207

i am really focusing on this protein thing! i wanted cereal so bad, but also needed protein to balance things out and hit my daily goals.  i prepared 4 egg whites (+ a little yolk that fell into the bowl) in the microwave—super simple, i whisk them with a splash of milk and microwave them on power level 70% for 3 minutes. voila.

IMG_0208

the cereal was a mix of kashi golean, TJ’s fiber cereal and kamut puffs topped off with skim milk.

IMG_0209

i was the ONLY person in the office this morning (for the first 4 hours) and so i watched the front desk.. and had these staring at me:

IMG_0210

i am a pretzel fanatic. i had to have one five handfuls.

IMG_0213

but really, 120 calories for 25 pretzels is no big deal. hey, at least it’s not crack.

lunch: four cheese chicken mac.

IMG_0225

I LOVE LEFTOVERS! end of story. you guys have to make this—SERIOUSLY. oh, and the recipe is right here.

IMG_0227

i had a citrus kombucha with lunch. that’s my second favorite flavor. they were $2 at whole foods, steal of a deal.

IMG_0237

while i was eating (slash working—what’s a lunch break?), my boss grabbed my camera and proceeded to take photo after photo of me in a circle “from every angle” as he put it.. um..

IMG_0229IMG_0230IMG_0231

IMG_0232IMG_0233IMG_0234

this is what i deal with at work, folks. but i love my job, so it’s tolerable.

totally unrelated thought.. last year, easter was on april 4. this year, it is on april 24. next year, it is on april 8. who the hell decides this and why is it always so random?! maybe that’s why i like christmas.. december 25th every year.

also, i kinda miss doing flashback friday. do you guys miss me doing it? if it is an all around missing, then i will make the effort to do one at least once a month. let me know how you feel about that.

alright, that’s enough out of me. love you all. happy weekend.

Qs~

1. any april fools day pranks you want to share with the class? either ones you pulled or were pulled on you.. anything goes.

2.  workouts: morning, afternoon, evening or night?

Green Dog Wine April 1, 2011 at 12:35 pm

Woot woot! Power in numbers! :) I love it! *non-alcholic*CHEERS* my dear! :)

stuffedsillysarah April 1, 2011 at 12:36 pm

Hi, I’ll join in the no drinking… Well actually that would be cheating – haven’t had a sip for months due to the medication the doctors have me on :o It’s tough at first but eventually don’t miss it at all :) Can’t wait to see how your insanity challenge works out for you… x x

Sami April 1, 2011 at 12:37 pm

wellllll you saw mine :) and commented…haha. unfortunately, it didn’t fool many people.

you’re going to love insanity! it def. kicked my butt!

xo.

The Teenage Taste April 1, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Glad to hear you’re getting back on track! I’ve been trying to reduce my snacking and the water has really helped!
Cheers to a great April! :]

Efka April 1, 2011 at 12:41 pm

will be waiting , how insanity work out.

I love workouts in the mornings, but due all different things I have to fit it in somwhere, usually its evenings, about 19

alison j April 1, 2011 at 12:45 pm

I drank that kombucha today as well! however, mine was not that cheep.

Dorry April 1, 2011 at 12:45 pm

I gave up alcohol in January and I liked it so much that I continued it further! I’m sure you’ll do great. I’ve never had that flavor Kombucha – I’m stuck on some favorites, but need to branch out. $2 is such a steal! There’s a place here that sells them regularly for $2.59 – I stock up. :) I like morning and afternoon workouts, but probably morning more. And occasionally, if the weather is just right, I’ll go on a lunchtime run outside. Good luck with everything! I want to hear how you like the Insanity DVDs.

lowandbhold April 1, 2011 at 12:45 pm

Oh child, I’d be scared too! I fail at morning workouts. I think I could do it if I didn’t go to work at 7, but getting up at 4 a.m. does not fly for this girl. I’ve wanted to do Insanity though. Sounds fun!
Good luck with all your goals!
No pranks for me. I suck at them.
I’m an after work or evening workouter. But lately, there hasn’t been much working out at all. Hoping to change that tonight!

a taste of health with balance April 1, 2011 at 12:48 pm

insanity! i’ve been debating to buy it and wanted to switch gears from my usual routine. im excited for you! i love working out first thing in the morning, but can totally understand how some cant deal with it. maybe you’ll end up liking it more than you thought :) either way i’m cheering you on and maybe i’ll give in and buy the dvds!

janetha April 1, 2011 at 12:49 pm

i love the insanity DVDs. i bought mine over a year ago for only $50 on craigslist. they are great at home workouts!

Chelsea April 1, 2011 at 12:50 pm

I also need to do the whole spring clean my diet and habits so i’m loving all your tips and things you’re working on, i especially like the no alcohol april, although as I’m a student and write my finals in april I dont’ think this one will pass, i will most likely need a drink or two after writing my finals, so maybe no alcohol/clean eating and habits may!

Also I definately think you should do the flashback fridays! i really enjoyed those! also wondering if you plan on finishing (or finished already) the 30 day challenge post thing?

janetha April 1, 2011 at 1:27 pm

Hey Chelsea! Um, yeah, I do plan on completing that 30 day challenge. Haha.. it will be like the 30 week challenge by the time I am done!!

cbrady3 April 1, 2011 at 12:51 pm

I’m a morning work out girl.
SO excited to follow your insanity program. I’m so curious about it!! Good luck!

Carbzilla April 1, 2011 at 12:51 pm

You guys are nuts. I’m drinking alcohol. I’m gonna try to avoid a-holes. That’s my goal for April.

THANKS for reminding me to change my calendar! Seriously, I was getting sick of looking at my own mug.

Because I love you so much, I made a one-serving version of your casserole for lunch today. It was delish! I made it with whole wheat noodles, cream of mushroom soup base, Laughing Cow & Jack Cheese. Perfect for a rainy day!

Can’t wait to hear how Insanity goes. I need to get back on my 30-Day Shred!

Kristina @ spabettie April 1, 2011 at 12:56 pm

I can’t wait to follow your Insanity progress… I have been thinking of doing either that or p90. I generally like a morning workout, but things lately have made me redo my days – today I’m doing an afternoon run, which is great because it will be 60 and sunny – perfect!

woo HOO to April Alcohol Free! easy peasy – and as Allison said, a big non alcoholic Cheers! :)

Allison @ Runs A Latte April 1, 2011 at 12:57 pm

Yay for morning workouts! I never though I could do it either, but now I’m the grouchiest grouch ever if I don’t get in my morning workout. So much so that when I’m cranky, my fiance asks, “did you work out today?” or “how long has it been since you’ve eaten?” I’m oh-so predictable.

The first month or so will be painful, but honestly nothing beats being able to chill out in the evening.

BTW, how insane is Insanity? I’ve never even heard of it.

janetha April 1, 2011 at 1:31 pm

It’s pretty insane. Intense cardio–not much in the way of weights though. Great for fat loss!

Karen April 1, 2011 at 12:57 pm

I would love to do my workouts in the morning but I already get up at 5:30 just to get ready for the day. I’m not sure how much earlier I can get up and still get enough sleep. Right now I do my workouts in the evening during the week and after breakfast on the weekends. I’m tossing around the idea of just 2 morning workouts during the week – that way I don’t have to get up too early every day!

Holly @ The Runny Egg April 1, 2011 at 1:01 pm

No pranks around here, yet — hopefully none though. I can’t pull them off and I get so upset when someone messes with me!

Lately I’ve been loving AM workouts!

carly71722 April 1, 2011 at 1:02 pm

Congrats on staying on track with some of your goals :) It’s hard to do that many at once, so a few improvements at a time is great. What a great price for Kombucha! Luckily I have a starter (or so I hope), and I make it myself! I just moved my starter across the country and I am hoping that she didn’t die on the trip.

Ashley April 1, 2011 at 1:05 pm

Good luck on the Insanity workouts! I work out in the morning and love getting it done with for the day. If I wait until after work I tend to talk myself out of going.

The Easter date switches drive me crazy too…especially because I work in advertising for a retailer so it messes up all the comp weeks from year to year. But the switch is due to Easter falling on the first full moon after the March 21st (1st day of Spring), crazy!

Erica April 1, 2011 at 1:07 pm

whoop for alcohol free month! I’m doing alcohol free 10 months haha ;) Sounds like you’re doing pretty well on your goals!! 125 grams of protein?? Wow! I have a little trouble meeting my required 75 a day (but thats because I don’t really eat meat most days I guess). Yummy lunch. The circle pictures cracked me up. No april fools day jokes! They scare me :) Happy weekend

Michelle April 1, 2011 at 1:11 pm

I know exactly what you mean when you say getting back on track is hard. I’ve been trying (like, *really* trying) for a couple weeks now and I’ve definitely be far from perfect. But I try to remind myself that just because I missed a day or two of working out, that doesn’t mean I’ll miss every day! So I just pick up the next day and it’s all good :-)

Good luck with the Insanity workouts. I’m looking forward to reading about your experience during the 60 days. Morning workouts are easier after you get used to them (and that’s coming from a serious non-morning person). You can do it!

gabbysgfree April 1, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Thank you for reminding me to change all my calendars! For April my challenge is a 30 day yoga challenge – 30 minutes of yoga everyday, for 30 days. Cheers to getting back on track!

Hallie April 1, 2011 at 1:15 pm

I did the ole “I’m preggo” thing on Facebook last year and it was awesome because some people really believed me. I google imaged an untrasound pic and was like, look everyone! HA.

OK Question for you! So I’m 4ish weeks into Body for Life and haven’t seen much in results so far. I’m working so hard so it’s really frustrating! I was wondering how you might combine the Insanity challenge and BFL? I’m just getting back into lifting so I don’t want to stop that while I do insanity, but they are GREAT (and convenient) cardio workouts and I’m interested in giving the whole thing a try. And ideas? I know I could do it back-to-back but I have a deadline here…wedding in three months (from tomorrow!).

janetha April 1, 2011 at 1:29 pm

Hey Hallie!

4 weeks is not enough time! The program is 12 weeks–I suggest give it the full 12 weeks and give it your all–no cheating and stick to the book guidelines 100%… most women don’t see results til week 8 actually. A lot of people refer to it as “magic week 8”. Hang in there and keep with it–I don’t think changing a program is a good idea.

I think Insanity is a great program and BFL is a great program, but they work independent of each other.. I would do one or the other, but combining the two isn’t something I’d do myself. Then again, it’s all up to you! That’s just my thought on the subject :)

3 months! Excitinggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg. And CRAZY! Love it. And you!

caitlin April 1, 2011 at 1:33 pm

I did the whole “im engaged” but no one believed me because the boy is stationed in Japan for 2 more months :). Dang it- I love April fools day!
I would love to join in on the no drinking thing but i love my wine to much. Im going to think about it!

J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) April 1, 2011 at 1:34 pm

Your boss sounds fun!

That cheese and chicken Mac looks awesome. Wish i had leftovers of it.

Heather April 1, 2011 at 1:38 pm

I work out over my lunch hour. I meet up with friends at the gym, which is great for accountability. I also find that I have WAY more energy in the afternoon if I get in a workout at noon!

savgsims April 1, 2011 at 1:43 pm

You’re work out routine sounds about like mine! ;) oh well!

balancejoyanddelicias April 1, 2011 at 2:04 pm

Love your breakfast combo! I love eggs at breakfast!

When I work I like to workout first thing in the morning and when I work at home, i workout in the evening so i have something to expect to, otherwise I wouldn’t go out the whole day.

Christie April 1, 2011 at 2:18 pm

My team pulled a prank on my boss this morning… we all pretended to call in. I’m a trainer at a big company and we had 2 classes that had no trainers (well, that’s what she though). We really had her going up until she pulled in the parking lot at work and saw one of us. She figured it out then but it was so funny! Thankfully she was a good sport about it :)

I usually do afternoon workouts. I’d like to be a morning person but I just can seem to go to bed on time!

Errign April 1, 2011 at 2:25 pm

“hey at least it’s not crack” – I LOL’d – people stared. And those pretzels prettttyyy much are crack. Love them. :)

I wrote my april goals post today & I am also doing an alcohol free april (or “no drankin’ ” as I so classily put it.)

Marie April 1, 2011 at 2:26 pm

Those Insanity workouts look so intense; they make my knees and back hurt just thinking about it. ;) I’ve been doing those BodyRock.tv workouts the past four weeks and love them!

I LOVED your Flashback Fridays and would love to see them again!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) April 1, 2011 at 2:30 pm

workouts..whenever I can get them in…morning, afternoon, early evening..whatever works

alcohol free April? I love it! I am down for that too! I rarely drink despite joking about it on my blog, but I actually went 4.5 years w/ NO alcohol! Pregnant, nursing, no interest, small child, etc. Now, it’s like 1 glass of wine every few months!

Julia April 1, 2011 at 2:34 pm

I had a prank free day…and fortunately have not been fooled by any pranks yet.
I <3 ed flashback fridays, so I'll be happy if you bring them back – but that ones all you :)
Your office sounds like a blast :)
Have a great Friday!

Allison @ Food For Healing April 1, 2011 at 2:53 pm

no pranks pulled by me or on me this year, kind of uneventful I guess, but i dont mind.
I like to workout in the later afternoon, before supper.

The bf and I have been thinking about getting into insanity, but might still weight awhile until we’re in better shape, i think itd kill me haha

Mimi April 1, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Gah, sticking to goals is HARD. Especially when I have 4 flatmates who eat like typical college students. And drink like them too.

I actually have Insanity on my computer, but I only did a few of the workouts. It cracks me up ShaunT also did Hip Hop Abs. Maybe I’ll pick it up again…and DIG INTO MY SOUL!!! as ShaunT put it.

I pulled an April Fool’s joke on my blog today…too many people are falling for it!

Gavi @ GaviGetsGoing! April 1, 2011 at 3:25 pm

I DO miss Flashback Fridays and would love to see them return! I am usually an afternoon exerciser (I work 8-4, and usually exercise from 4:45-6:15+) during the week. On Fridays, I do a masters swim class that starts at 5:30 in the morning, and I LOVE getting my exercise out of the way early and just relaxing after work. On the weekends, I definitely prefer working out in the morning. Good luck with Insanity! It looks really fun and I can’t wait to read what you think about it. Have a great weekend!

lifttorun April 1, 2011 at 4:14 pm

I don’t get the deal with kombucha. Maybe I need to try it. Everyone swears it is the best thing on Earth.

Good luck on getting back on track. You can do it. (:

whatkateiscooking April 1, 2011 at 4:42 pm

Morning workouts as often as possible :) In my dream world, I would have time every morning and never have to put off working out until the afternoon or evening!

Krista @ Journey to a Healthy Berg April 1, 2011 at 5:07 pm

It all depends on my schedule for the day, but usually I like getting my workouts out of the way in the morning! Ya feel good all day :)

Cathy K April 1, 2011 at 5:22 pm

oh my gosh, where to start!
flashback fridays: yes, miss ’em.
i did what i thought was a funny april fool’s joke on my blog, but most everyone believed me! oops…maybe i’ll try the running out of gas one next year! :)
insanity: have been intrigued ever since gina/fitnessista did it and wrote about it.
love your breakfast plate.
kashi is great because you can have cereal and still get protein. brilliant.
vitamins: get all chewables (multi, vit c, calcium, vit d – all come in chewable form) – then it’s like eating a candy – yum!
easter changing dates bugs me, too.
i’ll stop now.
can’t wait to follow your april goals!

cleaneatingchelsey April 1, 2011 at 5:37 pm

hahaha I love your joke from last year. I freak people out that I’m pregnant all the time so I figured if I did it today, it wouldn’t have worked at all.

BroccoliHut April 1, 2011 at 5:45 pm

I am on a pretzel kick these days too–particularly the honey wheat kind from TJ’s, dunked in PB. Mmm.

emily April 1, 2011 at 5:54 pm

I’m going to miss the point (all the points) entirely, and instead comment that the calendar picture of the owls and hedgehog is the cutest freaking thing ever!

Annette @EnjoyYourHealthyLife April 1, 2011 at 6:35 pm

workouts in the MORNING! Love my morning workouts! Nice idea with Insanity–I am rolling with more HIIT cardio, more swimming, and more spinning. I need to change up my cardio to make it more intense and with intervals (just get lazy and do the steady state thing–lamsauce!!)
Love pretzels too, btw!

Katie April 1, 2011 at 6:40 pm

I would so do the no alcohol april if it wasn’t my birthday month and my bachelorette party next weekend!!!

Loving the pics of you in the office, so cute!! U are adorable, your boss is funny with taking those shots from all the angles ; )

Happy Weekend! xoxo <3

Pure2raw twins April 1, 2011 at 7:15 pm

Alcohol-free, huh, well the only way I go without alcohol is now on this candida cleanse, ugh it drives me crazy, although I have feeling I am not going to resist it much longer….good luck!!!

Oh yes we did the 60 day insanity program last year. It is insane!!!! haha really, crazy. sometimes got too much for us we had to skip some days. It was great though. It helped me get out of a workout rut. Morning workouts used to be my fav, but now I workout much later in the day.

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) April 1, 2011 at 7:41 pm

I can almost never work out if it’s after about noon or 1pm. My energy tanks. Derek was not a morning person til we met and now he’s fine with it- you’ll be too, if you stick with it.

The BLTs and handfuls of this and that are a calorie killer- that’s why I need to keep stats. I still pick, but I count it and somehow it works for me in the end (better than not keeping data). And yes, getting back on track is fricken hard as I’m finding out right now. :-(

Mama Pea April 1, 2011 at 7:56 pm

I haven’t drank for a month now, so I’m definitely in on your April challenge! Ain’t no thang!

paijery April 1, 2011 at 11:03 pm

Loved your april prank last year!
I want to try Insanity SO BAADLY!!
I like to work out in the morning but anytime is fine for me. On days off it usually happens in the afternoon :)

Jasmine Desilva April 2, 2011 at 2:57 am

Good luck with Insanity! I did it from Jan to March the entire program ( I maybe missed 3 workouts) and cut out alcohol. At the end of it I was down 17 pounds , 11 inches and a hell of a lot fitter. However I must admit that when I go to have a drink now I’m a light weight lol. But enjoy it I’ve gotten at least 4 other ppl to order it after they saw my results ( and I was big so it pushed past a plateau I hadn’t been able to get passed).

Keep us posted!

sophia April 2, 2011 at 3:19 am

I can’t join because I never drank to begin with…but power to you all! And Janetha, you can do it! :-)

By the way, I totally forgot about April’s Fools. And I’m a gullible person, so I believed a lot of them. I really need to wise up!
