this is what happened.

in meals

hey guys! it’s me, janetha g, yep.. i know, i’ve been MIA. i have been on twitter on facebook but really haven’t felt up to light hearted blogging. special thanks to eden, holly & christin for sending over spur of the moment guest posts for meals & moves! love you three.

i know you guys probably all wonder where i have been and what the crap is going on, right?  well, here i am. my family hit a major bump in the road on saturday.  and i am going to tell you what happened. i am sharing this with you all not because i want sympathy or because i want to dwell on it, but because it’s a big deal and part of life. plus i want to have it here so i remember.. blogs are journals, didn’t you know?

my mom and i both agree that what happened is something that should be out on the table because there may be others out there who have dealt with, are dealing with, or will deal with a similar situation and it’s good to talk about struggles. plus someone might be able to help her. you all know that i am not one to hold back—i mean, my drugs & alcohol post and suicide post are prime examples of my tendency to put it all out for all to see.  but what happened on saturday wasn’t something that (directly) happened to me.. so i didn’t want to blurt it out due to privacy issues.

it happened to my mom. AKA momma b. AKA my best friend.

image

circa thanksgiving 2009.

and momma b says i should blog about it. in her words:

I want you to know that if you want to blog about this I am just fine with that because I feel like there may be someone else out there who I might be able to help if they hear my story, you can decide but just saying you have my permission and blessing to share if you want to.

SO. here it is, in a nutshell.. well as small as a nutshell as possible, that is.

saturday around 11 AM i got a call from my dad. i remember his words exactly, as they are burned into my brain forever. “janetha, honey, we are at the hospital. mom had a stroke.”

the tears started flowing as marshall & i listened to my dad explain that my mom had walked upstairs and asked him what day it was. he said saturday, thinking she was joking around.  when she looked down at her sweet new blue puma kicks she recently snagged in vegas and asked him “where did these blue shoes come from?”, he knew something was wrong. after a few more minutes of talking to her, my dad realized that she thought  it was 2008. and she had no clue as to what was going on. TWO THOUSAND EIGHT.

he rushed her to the ER where they did all sorts of hosiptal-like tests. he told me he would call when he knew more.. and we hung up.

insert a whole bunch of freaking out. like. a whole bunch of FREAKING OUT. she’s so young! only 58! she’s so fit! she works out regularly! she’s so healthy! she eats well! why, why, why, why.. times 7 million.

around 4 PM on saturday, marshall and i were able to go up to her house to see her. the hospital had released her and said her memory should slowly start returning. they diagnosed her with a transient ischemic attack (or a TIA). not as bad as a full blown stroke, but really bad none the less. luckily all her motor functions were present. she could walk, write, talk, etc.. but she sure didn’t know WHAT she was talking about. that was the scary part. we spent a few hours with her and they were the worst hours ever. she did remember what year it was, but she couldn’t remember anything short term.  she would get suuuper excited when she remembered something, but then 3 minutes later she would remember the same thing. again. and again. and again. nothing stuck. i can’t put the feeling i felt into words. it’s like my mom was there, but she wasn’t there. and i hated it. every bit of it. i will stop trying to describe it, because i just can’t.

my brother and dad gave her a blessing on saturday evening. saturday was a restless night. i prayed that she would wake up normal on sunday. please, please, please god.. just let my mom be normal. and, miracles of miracles.. she woke up and was more like herself! things were still cloudy and she had a headache.. but she remembered what you said to her. i told her it was like she was super drunk for a week solid and just totally blacked out and now was trying to remember. she’s getting better and better as the days go by, she woke up today with no headache at all.

anyway, i’ve been spending a lot of time with her—that’s where i have been. cooking and eating and just being around. she went to a stroke center here in SLC all day yesterday and she has been lined up with a really good stroke specialist. they are going to find out exactly what happened to her on saturday. it’s still up in the air. and, since she can’t remember, we have no idea how or where in the house it happened. she was in her workout clothes, but she KNOWS she didn’t workout because she wasn’t sore the next day. how awesome is it that my mom forgets a whole day, but knows she didn’t work out due to lack of DOMS. love that lady.  hopefully this doc can give us some answers as to why this happened and how to prevent it from happening in the future-or at least know what to do immediately if it DOES happen again.

i talk about momma b a lot on my blog and i know a lot of you feel like you know her and SHE feels like she knows all of YOU. we both feel like this is something that you all needed to know about so you could understand what’s going on with us. we cannot express how grateful we are for all the comments, emails, messages and whatnot you all have sent our way. and blindly, not even knowing WHY you were thinking about us. i am blown away—and i know it made a difference.

so thank you. times a million. plus one.

so now i am trying to move on from the horrible experience.. but it is a little hard for me.  it is something that will forever be on my mind and there is no escaping that. you never forget the best day of your life but even more, you never forget the worst day of your life. but for now i am going to try to come back to blogging and act normal, k? because that’s what i need. normalcy. and i know that’s what my mom needs, too, and she likes to read my blog.. so blogging as usual shall commence starting now.

last night i made up a DELICIOUS new recipe and took it to my parents’ house to devour.

IMG_9913

chicken pot pie casserole.

IMG_9910

i mean, did you think it wouldn’t be a casserole? you know me. obsessed.

IMG_9917

recipe coming soon!

IMG_9926

it was too good!! marshall had seconds, my dad had thirds and i ate leftovers for lunch today. i am sad the leftovers are gone!

one awesome surprise that was delivered to my mom’s house was this edible arrangement~

 IMG_9899

susan, danica and holly—YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING. thank you!

IMG_9895

we ate almost the whole arrangement last night.

 IMG_9905

the best part? the bananas covered with dark AND milk chocolate AND peanut butter inside. um. yum.

IMG_9927

side note: looks like i need some sleep.

who needs flowers when there’s chocolate covered fruit? thanks so much, ladies! love you.

IMG_9908

that was last night. tonight, i came home to another wonderful surprise:

IMG_9947

elise and her husband kyle sent NIBBLERS!

IMG_9949

so, so thoughtful. thank you elise! i took half of the cookies to momma b and they are officially almost gone. i attacked the snickerdoodles immediately. just sayin.

it blows me away how amazing blog friends are. i think we need to buy an island and all us bloggers need to move there and live there and eat cereal for the rest of our lives. deal? sounds good to me.

well, i will be back later with a less heavy post. it feels good to be back and even better to clue you all in on what’s going on with my fam. thank again for all your support.

no questions for today, just lots of love to you all!

Jessica @ How Sweet March 22, 2011 at 6:36 pm

OH my gosh! I can’t even imagine how scary and awful this was and what you have been going through. I am so sorry to hear it girl. But I will be thinking of and praying for you and your family and your wonderful momma!

simplyshaka March 22, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Oh my God, that is just horrible :( I was hoping you would be away for something good. I am so happy she is starting to feel like her normal self again and will send good vibes her way. My dad had a heart attack that struck him hard and cant even put into words what I felt that day. It makes thing so surreal when it happens to your parents, the one who brought you into this world and raised you.

Feel better Momma B!!

Katy March 22, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Oh, oh, oh honey…

Tears are streaming down my face, both for your mom and how scary this must be for *her*, and for your family who is left trying to figure out what happens next.

I’m incredibly close with my mother, who is 60 and not as healthy as your mother. So yes, this terrifies me. And yes, it puts me in your shoes and gives me incredible sympathy. The empathy comes from having other (albeit older) family members who have suffered strokes. It’s a terrible, terrible condition and I hate that you’re experiencing it first-hand.

Please know that your readers…your FRIENDS…are sending you all the good wishes in the world, and we understand completely that while blogging is a journal, it is not real life. Take as much time away as you need. Or lean on us if you need that.

<3, my dear J.

carmen March 22, 2011 at 6:39 pm

janetha, my mom had a stroke a few years ago. i remember the exact moment my father told me on the phone that my mom had a stroke and the feeling i had. we went through A LOT (hers was a full blown stroke, requiring brain surgery and everything). my prayers go out for you. so glad your momma is okay.

april March 22, 2011 at 6:40 pm

You are in my thoughts and prayers!

coffeeandthepaper March 22, 2011 at 6:40 pm

Janetha, I’m so sorry to hear about your mother. When awful things like this happen, it’s only natural to ask a million unanswerable question and to feel a million overwhelming emotions. I can’t imagine how scared you must have been, and I understand that it’s hard to come back from that. Just take it day by day. Thank you so much for being brave enough to share this and know that you and your family are in my heart and on my mind tonight.

Love you!

Donna March 22, 2011 at 6:40 pm

So brave of you to share. I will be keeping your mom and your family in my prayers. Good luck!

Heather (Where's the Beach) March 22, 2011 at 6:46 pm

Oh wow, girl, I am so thinking about you and your family. I must say, I do love that your mom knew she didn’t workout b/c no DOMS. Seriously… ;-) I definitely agree that sharing this could help others, even if they don’t know it’s a stroke, just learning to recognize when something is totally not right and acting on that. I hope she continues to get better and you get some rest!

Christin@purplebirdblog March 22, 2011 at 6:48 pm

Oh Janetha-love… I am SO sorry you guys are going through this, but I’m also grateful that you guys are so close-knit and can be there for each other! And I thank you for sharing this with us. You’ve been heavy on my mind and the prayers have been flowing. I’ve said it before but I’ll say again that I love how close you two are with one another… it’s an amazing and incredibly special relationship, and I know that made it that much harder. You are SO EFFING STRONG, and so is Momma B, and God will bring you all through this with grace and love. I love you, lady! xo

Andrea March 22, 2011 at 6:48 pm

I’m sorry to hear what your mom went through but very glad to hear she is doing better.

Gab March 22, 2011 at 6:49 pm

Janetha,
I follow your blog every day, somestimes 3 times a day. I missed you, and am so sorry to hear about MOMMA B!
She has her youth, her spirit, and her great fit mind and body to get her through this. Stay strong as I know you will!!!!!! xoxo

Allison @ Runs A Latte March 22, 2011 at 6:51 pm

Janetha, I’m so sorry that you and your family had to go through that. Unfortunately, I know exactly how that feels! My mother also had a TIA and a heart attack before the age of 50. There really are no words to describe the fear, anxiety and sadness. I wish your mother the absolute best and will pray for a complete recovery. I hope the doctors are able to come up with some explanation for you and your family. With all the love and support coming both of your ways, how could she not get better! :)

enjoyingthechaos March 22, 2011 at 6:51 pm

Janetha~my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I can only imagine how scared you were/are..I am extremely close with my mother and have no clue what I would do if something like this happened to her. I am so happy that each day is a better day and pray the stoke clinic can guide your family thorough this time.

Glad to have you back!!

Danielle March 22, 2011 at 6:52 pm

I’m so sorry to hear what your mom went through, I can’t imagine how frightening that must have been for you and your family. I’m so so glad to hear she is doing better.

I <3 Edible Arrangements, so much better than flowers! :)

terrell March 22, 2011 at 6:53 pm

Oh my gosh, my heart is breaking for you all, but I am so happy to hear she is doing better. My mom is my best friend too and I remember the day she called to tell me she had breast cancer. I thought she was joking and laughed. It didn’t hit me she was sick until I saw her a couple months later and all her hair was gone (I live 3k miles away from her). She is all better now, but I know how hard it is to see your best friend and mother sick and feel totally helpless.

All the best!

Pure2raw twins March 22, 2011 at 6:53 pm

We are glad you shared this, your mom sounds like an amazing person just like you :) Hugs to you both!!! You two are both inspiring women :)

Holly March 22, 2011 at 6:54 pm

Erica March 22, 2011 at 6:54 pm

my heart is with you, your Mom, your whole family! I just love Momma B to pieces (even though we’ve never met). You know I am super close with my Mom too, so I can just imagine how you feel right now.

The pot pie looks awesome- I can’t wait for the recipe. And those fruit bouquets are the best. If there is ANYTHING we can do for you- let us know. So much love!

momma b March 22, 2011 at 6:55 pm

Thanks to you my sweet neef for a perfect recap of a few scary days. I am doing well and am excited to get these tests under way so we can get some answers! I am getting the best care from my awesome family, great doctor, friends and all of these wonderful blog readers! Your love and concern is so overwhelming and I have honestly felt your love for Janetha and our family. Sending love and hugs to you all xoxo!!!

Kristen B. March 22, 2011 at 9:22 pm

Love you Sue!

lowandbhold March 22, 2011 at 6:59 pm

Janetha I am so so so sorry to hear this. I know you don’t want sympathy, and that’s not what I’m feeling. I’m just feeling genuinely sad and compassionate that you and your family are going through this. I almost lost my mother once and it was the absolute worst time of my life. To know that someone as sweet and kind as you is going through that pain breaks my heart.
I am indescribably happy to hear that she is doing better and will be praying fervently for her and for all her loved ones. I have always loved seeing your relationship with her on the blog. I can tell she is an amazing woman and you are amazing as well as a result.
I love you and that casserole looks delicious (somewhat normal comment!) xoxoxo

Liz @ Blog is the New Black March 22, 2011 at 7:01 pm

SO scary- she’s so young! I’ll keep you guys in my thoughts. :) xo

Stefanie @TheNewHealthy March 22, 2011 at 7:01 pm

I am sending so so much love your family’s way. I know how special Momma B is to you just in the way you talk about her. I feel the same way about my Mom, so I can imagine how scared you must have been (and still are).

P.S. I absolutely love that she knew she didn’t work out due to lack of DOMS! What a rockstar! :)

Ashley March 22, 2011 at 7:03 pm

Ugh, my heart sank when I read something happened to Momma B :( My dad had a heart attack the day before I was going back to college my senior year and I will never forget that phone call. Luckily he recovered, and I am SO glad to hear Momma B is getting better. I’m sending all my best wishes to you and your family!

lynn @ the actor's diet March 22, 2011 at 7:04 pm

big big big hug. love you.

Marie March 22, 2011 at 7:08 pm

Been thinking about you all weekend, and will be praying for your dear, sweet mom. Such a scary story and so glad to hear she is doing well so far. I pray that her healing/recovery continues!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) March 22, 2011 at 7:09 pm

Janetha…thank you for sharing with everyone what happened. I am sooooooo very sorry for this! Omg I feel like your mom is a mom to so many of us. She is so sweet, loving, caring..I remember once about 18 mos ago I commented on your blog, something to the effect of, I hope one day I have the relationship with Skylar that you and Momma B have…and she comment replied to me and said just keep doing what I am doing, and I will. It was such a wonderful comment and reinforcement..and I will never forget that.

Momma B is a wonderful woman and she and all of you are in my prayers. If you need anything, just ask. Be specific b/c in times like this, it’s all about making life EASIER. I will do anything i can to help.

xoxo

Nicole March 22, 2011 at 7:14 pm

Oh dear that’s horrible :( You have been in my prayers! My mother has had four TIAs since I was a senior in high school (she was 50) and has had a couple since. If you have any questions at all, I’m in nursing and am stroke certified and have been there! Regardless, you are all in my prayers!

Amanda March 22, 2011 at 7:16 pm

Oh my gosh. I don’t even know what to say right now. I want to come and hug you guys right now. That is completely scary. My grandfather had a stroke when he was 60 that was similar to this and a total surprise to us! It’s awesome that your dad took her to the ER right away when he noticed that something was up. That is key in these situations.

You guys are in my heart. Love you. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate!

Abby March 22, 2011 at 7:17 pm

Hugs, thoughts, and prayers from me to you and your family!

Anonymous March 22, 2011 at 7:17 pm

Oh gosh Janetha I am SO sorry to hear about this. My heart was pounding the whole time I was reading because my mom is the same age as yours, and you and I are the same age.

I wanted to share something that happened to me, in the hopes it might help you in some way.

About 6 years ago, my mom had a suicide attempt. She was rushed to the hospital and had surgery and then was an inpatient for awhile and then received a bunch of ECT treatments. I wanted you to know this because afterwards she had a lot of memory loss and she was very much a different person for quite a long while. I’ve said it to so many people just as you described it: “it’s like my mom was there, but she wasn’t there. and i hated it. every bit of it. i will stop trying to describe it, because i just can’t.” I so intimately know exactly what you meant. I know how terrifying that moment is on so many levels.

It’s been a long road, and while she isn’t completely the mom I remember, she has gotten SO much better. Better than we hoped for.

I’m so glad to hear that your mom is doing better and I hope that she will be 100% soon. Thinking of you and your family and wishing your mom the very best.

renee stosich March 22, 2011 at 7:18 pm

Janetha i’m sending get well wishes to your momma! i hope she’s feeling stronger and stronger each day! lots of love! :)

sofia March 22, 2011 at 7:25 pm

i didn’t mention this before, but my grandmother had a non-TIA stroke when i was five (she was older, overweight and had high blood pressure) that was honestly so scary for me as her granddaughter, but i can only imagine how it was for my mom and her sister (who were much older than you at the time). thank goodness she is getting her memory back and that she has such a loving family (especially daughter ;)) to take care of her right now. i’ll be thinking of you and your momma and family! keep us updated or i’ll get annoying like an overbearing blog-momma and just email you about it regardless ;) hehe. and thank you for being so bold as to share with us!

jill (i run i eat) March 22, 2011 at 7:28 pm

I am sooooo sorry to hear about your mom, but im glad things are getting back to normal. I can only imagine how scary that must have been. I hope she continues to get better!
