in meals,moves

i’m in a quinoa coma. this isn’t a bad thing. more on that in a moment.

first, some meals & moves! i am going to show you basically everything i ate today for the purpose of my post. here we go!

image_thumb11

breakfast was actually eaten at work today. i have been eating breakfast at home these days, but i was running late this morning so i ate breakfast at the office.

IMG_9611

1c plain 0% greek yogurt + 1 sliced banana + ~1/3c nature’s path ancient grains granola.

IMG_9613

lunch was leftover chicken + broccoli quinoa casserole, just as good (if not better!) the second time around.

IMG_9633

my snack was around 4 PM and i was still at the office.

1 sliced braeburn apple + ~1 TB mighty maple peanut butter + muscle milk light.

IMG_9638IMG_9639

when i got home from work i ended up having some toast + cottage cheese pre-workout.

image_thumb2

after a little procrastination and iron chef watching..

012

i decided to do a bodyrock.tv workout. i started with this warmup followed by the survivor workout and i was literally dripping in sweat after the short 15 minute intense routine.

a brief rundown of the workout—there are three five minute parts.  the first part consisted of five exercises that you do for 50 seconds and try to achieve max reps followed by a 10 second rest to write down your scores. for the next part, you do 5 minutes of single leg squats + tuck jumps for max reps. the third part is the exact same as the first part. here are my scores for the survivor workout:

  • left leg backward lunge and kick: part 1=22 , part 3=19
  • right leg backward lunge and kick: part 1=20 , part 3=20
  • single arm (alternating) press ups: part 1=12 , part 3=12
  • double kick with breakdance pushup: part 1=7 , part 3=7
  • pike jump + jump squat:  part 1=9 , part 3=9

i did 42 single leg squats + tuck jumps in the 5 minutes of part two.

i finished up with this cooldown. the entire process (warmup, workout and cooldown) took just over 30 minutes

the end.

i created a new, simple recipe for dinner tonight.

four can quinoa casserole!

IMG_9667

i am on a quinoa kick lately. i love how quick and easy it is to make and i also love the texture.  the health benefits are an added bonus.

to make this casserole, i simply boiled 1 lb of chicken breasts in low sodium broth and shredded it with two forks.

IMG_9659

i combined the chicken with 2 cups of cooked quinoa (i cooked it in low sodium chicken broth for extra flavor) and four cans:

IMG_9657

okay, so the one on the far right is technically a jar.. but “four can quinoa casserole” had a nicer ring than “three cans and one jar quinoa casserole”… don’t you agree?  also, i am well aware that this recipe is a total sodium bomb due to the canned goods. if you make this, go ahead and drink an extra glass (or twelve) of water.

anyway, i combined the chicken, quinoa, 7 oz can of diced green chiles, 10 oz can of rotel, 14 oz can of corn and 1 cup of verde salsa (not the whole jar) and mixed it well. because the dish didn’t have enough sodium yet, i added cholula seasoning. love this stuff.

IMG_9660

next, i poured it into a casserole dish and topped it with a bit of shredded cheese (the mexican blend).

IMG_9661

i baked the casserole at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes. can you guess which side is marshall’s?

IMG_9663

this recipe makes six servings and here are the stats for one serving, assuming you use 2 oz of cheese in the recipe:

image

those stats are also pre-garnish. i garnished my mexican casserole with 1/3 of a perfectly ripe avocado. it would have been even better with a dollop of greek yogurt, but i am all out!

 IMG_9670

and that, my friends, explains why i am currently in a quinoa coma. boy, was it delicious.

randy dog is in a different kind of coma.. he got into a box of love crunch granola and ate the whole thing! poor guy has a belly ache and can’t even move.

013

hopefully he learned a lesson.. but chances are he already wants more granola.

and now—the reason behind my title: lights, camera, action.

i am often curious about where bloggers shoot their photographs. some blogs that come to mind are ashley’s, allie’s and mama pea’s—their photos are always stellar! i am no professional, but i thought it would be fun to show you where i usually photograph my food.

i simply took photos of the bigger picture for all of my meals & moves today.

when i shoot at work, i try to take photos in the conference room because it is the only area that has natural light. that is where i shot my breakfast today.

IMG_9623IMG_9621

i did notice that the lighting was different due to the time change, but the natural light was still abundant. i usually use this small table right by the window and get great side light.

i sometimes use the other corner table for front light.

IMG_9622

the only problem is i have to be sure to use a placemat because the tables are all glass-top and there is a reflection in the glass if i don’t use a placemat.

if i am pressed for time, i will shoot my meals at my desk. this happens more often than not because i am usually really busy. i have ridiculously annoying florescent lighting in my office, but i adjust the white balance on my camera to make up for the harsh lighting.

IMG_9629

glamorous, i know.

i have a dark colored desk, so i try to use white dishes when shooting at my desk. today’s lunch up above is a good example.

when i have a snack at my desk, i try to zoom in because my desk is usually a mess.

IMG_9637

looking at my snack photos above, you wouldn’t know where i was when the photos were taken. looks are deceiving!

when i eat meals at home, i obviously shoot the recipe process in my kitchen. the lighting in the kitchen is standard and i use the tungsten white balance setting on my camera. you can see photo examples in the recipe how-to above.

when it is time for plating photos, however, i move over to my kitchen table. this is where i shoot all my meals eaten at home.

IMG_9673

there is a sliding glass door to the left in this photo and when it is light out, i get great light coming in and can shoot from all angles.  additionally, i have installed daylight bulbs in my kitchen light fixture so it gives off a more natural looking light at night time.

IMG_9677

after seeing ashley’s post about what she uses to shoot her photos, i think i want to buy a little table like the one she has so i can move to various rooms in the house to get optimal lighting depending on the time of day. i also really want to make a light box, but i am lazy. there, i said it.

i also thought it would be fun to show you guys where i do my bodyrock.tv workouts. we have a spare bedroom that really is just another place for me to put all my clothes. because there isn’t much in the room, i have converted it into a home workout station!IMG_9655

i have my stuff set up on the dresser.

IMG_9653

laptop with the workouts, interval timer, notebook & pen to write down scores, water bottle.

IMG_9644IMG_9647

i don’t have much equipment.. an exercise ball for abs and stretching, a foam roller, a jumprope, an exercise mat and some dumbbells.

IMG_9651

that’s it!  and i am able to get killer at home workouts in whenever i want.

well, that’s that! a little peek behind the scenes. hope you enjoyed it.

i am going to go join randy on the couch. check you guys later!

Qs~

1. question bloggers: where do you typically shoot your food photos? when i first started blogging, i always shot my photos on the floor of the house where i lived because it was the only spot to get nice lighting. this was fine, but it was hard to keep the dogs away from my food! the things we do…

2. question for everyone: how important are photos to you when deciding what blogs you read? to be honest, content always comes first.. but if photos are incredibly horrible, it makes a blog harder to read. when blog posts are entirely absent of photos, i still read if it is someone who’s blog i love.. but if i am initially checking a blog out and there are zero photos, i typically don’t stay long.

paijery March 15, 2011 at 9:42 pm

Hahha Randy and I are one. I totally OD’d on love crunch granola when I got my first box :)
That quinoa casserole looks delish! Love love love quinoa!!
I typically shoot my photos on a chair beside my window in the dining room or just on my kitchen counter when I’m really hungry/lazy.
I am a total content girl first, photos second! xo

Sarah March 15, 2011 at 9:43 pm

i shoot my photos wherever i am. i don’t get very good light in my office at work OR in my apartment with two small windows. i am excited to move next month to an apartment with abundant windows AND a patio!! :) hopefully the better light will motivate me to take better (non-instagram) photos! :)

Allison @ Food For Healing March 15, 2011 at 9:54 pm

i usually take my photos on my stove because it has the most light. and i dont have a proper lightbox built at the moment.
i like a blog with good pictures, but the words are more what draws me to it.

Allie (Live Laugh Eat) March 15, 2011 at 10:00 pm

You are too sweet! I sometimes show the behind-the-scenes for my shots but usually it’s a train wreck :). It’s all about the camera angles. Right now, our house doesn’t have plain white walls with nothing in the way i.e. wallpaper, blinds, curtains, windows, furniture…at least where the sun shines. I am always adjusting so ugly things in the background don’t show up. I RARELY eat where I photograph!

Mama Pea March 15, 2011 at 10:35 pm

I’m so flattered! I must be because I’m commenting via iPhone in a hotel hide-a-bed between Gigi and Lulu. That’s love.

I take all my photos in our breakfast nook which has natural light from three angles. I shoot in raw and then I edit the crap out of ’em.

The best blogs to me have a strong voice (like yours!). Good photos are just icing on the cake.

edenseats March 15, 2011 at 10:44 pm

Fun questions!
I used ti take them on the floor, Now I do on a table outside or by a window (always after the natural light). And I’m like you, content over “food porn”. But I just CANNOT handle messy pictures of people’s food and with their FLASH on. Sorry, pet peeve. I know, I’m evil. I also like bloggers who have their own voice. I get sick of, “And this is what I ate today!”. I want to see a personality shine through. (don’t worry, keep doing what your doing, you’r always shining).

glidingcalm March 15, 2011 at 10:59 pm

haha you are sooo adorable with your picture taking at work!! if my blog was as cool as your though, and (thus) I was more willing to show others my site + be open about GC, I’d probably do the same!

Heather March 15, 2011 at 11:34 pm

I noticed that you have been drinking muscle milk light.
I have been looking for a meal replacement protein shake ever since I discovered that Myoplex gives me a headache (likely the artificial sweeteners) , do you have any Aspartame/Splenda free suggestions?

janetha March 16, 2011 at 10:00 am

I like Tera’s Whey–it’s organic and natural and delicious.

Haley Greenwell March 15, 2011 at 11:57 pm

You always have mighty maple pb by pb&co and it makes me want some!
I have the white chocolate, dark chocolate, cinnamon raisin, and honey flavors, but I’ve never tried the mighty maple cuz they only sell it in NYC or ship it out.. not in stores around here :/

Also, I love the simple recipe. I’ll have to try it soon!
And I love your blog.

To answer your question: I have your opinion. Pictures keep things interesting!
<3 Haley

Ellie March 16, 2011 at 12:39 am

Haha I love how you showed us everything from far away! :P usually I do eat where I photograph (not that my pics are great) b/c there’s natural lighting next to the table anyway. As humans, we’re all really visual creatures, and so I do think that nice pics are always a bonus! But content (or food) is definitely the main part for moi.

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) March 16, 2011 at 2:21 am

love this post!!

love seeing WHERE you shoot and why and how the shooting set up looks. that’s sooo fun. I feel like such a nosy little spy and i love it :)

I have lived in 12 houses in 12 years. Just about the time I get a house down pat, we move. lol. Except we are staying put in this one :) But I have determined that my kitchen counter doenst get as great of sunlight as i wish and/or something happens w/ the overhead lights and the pics arent getting me what i want.

so i am shooting more on the floor. and also having a new camera, new lens(es), and really caring about my photos like never before….I have turned into a photography junkie. Not that my pics are awesome or anything but i am trying like hell to become awesome :)

MelissaNibbles March 16, 2011 at 2:28 am

I shoot my pictures whereever. I’m lazy like that. I don’t have good lighting in my apartment so it’s not like it matters where I go. I don’t post a trillion pictures anyway so I guess it doesn’t matter.
I wish my office was as modern as yours. It’s so 80s, smelly and uncomfortable. You’re very lucky.

1970kikiproject March 16, 2011 at 3:08 am

loved the behind-the-scenes tour of where you take photos, work out, j! haha, i am just imagining: “conference room is unavailable; janetha is doing her photo shoot!”
for me, i’d rather write than take photos. i LIKE to take pictures, and include them on my blog but just to break up the writing – to be honest, quality is not foremost in my mind.
i am drawn to blogs where personality shines through in the writing. i like when photos are included as a means of breaking up the writing but honestly, i don’t care whether the photos are dslr magazine-quality, or snapped super-quick with an iphone.
poor randy with his tummy ache! he must learn to stop at one bowl!!

Errign March 16, 2011 at 3:45 am

I want some Love Crunch granola!

I like to look at pretty photos, but I know mine are not always the prettiest. I’m making an effort to take good pictures while I am in Singapore right now!

Erica March 16, 2011 at 3:52 am

I love when the leftovers are better than the original meal! And the dinner sounds delicious and easy. I used to boil up a lot of the chicken I used and I haven’t done that in a while. I need to get back into it- makes meals much quicker/easier when you do it ahead of time too. Poor Randy!!! Frank got injured yesterday (well Monday night), so hes in pain today too :(. I shoot most of my pictures on my kitchen table. I’d like to get more into photography…but I honestly don’t have the patience! I love when blogs have nice pictures, but I’m with you- content first!

Lauren March 16, 2011 at 3:53 am

Wow, I would be in a state of comatose too after that dinner. Love seeing your “behind the scenes” pics. Has anyone ever questioned why you take your oatmeal into the conference room with a camera? LoL, I think people would ask if I did this at work.

Have a lovely day!!

janetha March 16, 2011 at 6:25 am

Haha well everyone at work knows about and most read my blog. They do think it’s silly though!

Sent from my iPhone

balancejoyanddelicias March 16, 2011 at 4:00 am

I don’t have natural light at my apartment :( but a good camera helps.

For food blogs pics are important, but now that I read other blogs about life, pics are not so important anymore to me.

Pd. Love your workout space!

The Teenage Taste March 16, 2011 at 4:12 am

That cassarole looks amazing! Yet another reason why I need to buy some quinoa! :]

cleaneatingchelsey March 16, 2011 at 4:22 am

I usually take pictures in my guest bedroom – it gets the best lighting. Or I go outside if it’s nice out, or on my bay window… or if I’m lazy, just at the dinner table. ;)

I love quinoa – check out that protein!!!

sofia March 16, 2011 at 4:35 am

i love the idea of a 30 minute kick-booty workout. bodyrock.tv will be tried soon, despite the deep gasps that seem semi-erotic. good times.

i take some pictures on the floor, some on counters, and some on stools below the skylight in my apartment (when i’m actually there during the day on a weekend, which is practically never). i wanna try the light box thing!

as someone who used to take pretty crappy pictures, i’d like to believe i am first and foremost a content girl. and i dig words more than photography, so that’s where i generally lean. but i do agree – if people post utterly BAD pictures, i think they’re silly and kind of give up on them. mean! i know!

Lindsey@ Textbooks and Cookbooks March 16, 2011 at 4:36 am

Photos are important, but the difference between a professional photo and a photo from someone who knows how to do most things on their camera isn’t a big difference to me. As long as the pictures that are posted aren’t blurry or look like they were taken by a non-digital, I stick around if I like the content :)

Lee March 16, 2011 at 4:59 am

I know this is a food blogger photo faux pas, but I use a flash a lot of the time. I have an external one, so the flash gets bounced off the ceiling and isn’t as harsh as the flash that comes with the camera. My house doesn’t get a lot of natural light, although sometimes I take pictures of my food on my deck.

Heather March 16, 2011 at 5:20 am

photos are very important…and they don’t have to be shot with a fancy camera to get my attention, but i do want to know that someone TRIED with them. if not it’s not likely i’ll stick around for too long (that makes me sound like a total snob…yikes…)

withasideofhope March 16, 2011 at 5:38 am

I LOVE the shape of the bowl that you ate your breakfast out of! It’s so cute and different looking! I love using dishes and bowls that are shaped funky! :) Oh, and your dinner looks amazing! I really need to get quinoa and try some of your recipes with it. They look way too good to pass up! :)

I am horrible at taking pictures. I try to take the best pictures that I can for myself. I don’t really mind reading blogs whose pictures aren’t that great because I know I’m not good at it myself. I do like looking at pretty pictures though :)

Kristin (Cook, Bake, Nibble) March 16, 2011 at 5:43 am

What a fun idea :)

I’m still getting into the whole good food photog thing, but the majority of my photos are taken in my kitchen, where the best light is, on a small tray table!

I love blogs with beautiful photos- not so great photos won’t keep me away if the content is great, but beautiful photos always keep me coming back! :)

xo

Trisha March 16, 2011 at 5:54 am

That quinoa casserole looks sooo good! Nice creation :)

Holly March 16, 2011 at 5:56 am

I take some pics outside on our porch, or I take them in the living room where there is the most natural light. Pictures in our kitchen always turn out orange.

Pictures aren’t super important — although I do prefer to see real photographs rather than generic pictures found online. Content is more important though!

Nicole @ Fresh n Fit March 16, 2011 at 6:13 am

I’m new to blogging but have been reading for a while. Good photos definitely make a difference to which blogs I keep coming back to.

I don’t have the greatest camera, so I am trying to find the best light in my house to capture my photos. It’s a work in progress!

Ashley @ 365 things March 16, 2011 at 6:37 am

i like your little green bowl, but i’m not gonna ask where you got it because i have too many as it is.

Photos aren’t real important as long as the writing is good.

erin March 16, 2011 at 6:41 am

I really really want to take a photography class…atleast to learn how to use my camera. I loved my 35mm SLR and not I want a digital SLR so so so bad..my pics aren’t great because the lighting in my house stinks in the lighting department.

fittingbackin March 16, 2011 at 7:01 am

Great post! The quinoa casserole (and yes – 4 cans rather than 3 cans + 1 jar is SO much better!) is on my list to make – yay! Thanks for the great rec!

I think content is more important too, but beautiful, fun, bright pictures can keep me coming back even more!

I take my foodie pics in our kitchen, near a window! When it’s not sunny, I turn on the pendants but they don’t come out as pretty. :(

ilovefetacheese March 16, 2011 at 7:35 am

I love casseroles…so nutritious, filling, and easy to balance! Plus you can calculate macros really easily most of the time! Your casseroles look so good.

And double thumbs up for more Zuz!!!

I take photos in normal lighting, and edit them in photoshop afterwards. I’ve realized that most great photos are made great in post-editing lol…daylight is always best. No question about that! But most of the time I’m not home during the day so I can’t use daylight.

Photos are really important to me for blogs….There are a number of no photo blogs I follow (and love), but my favorite are still blogs with photos. I typically like less writing as well.

Steph March 16, 2011 at 7:40 am

I try to shoot most of my pictures in the morning before I head out to work. I try to turn off all the kitchen lights (if shooting in the kitchen) and use as much natural light as possible. We have a bay window with a ledge I typically use. If the weather is nice enough I take it to the back porch. Natural light always makes a huge difference!

K is for Karma March 16, 2011 at 8:01 am

Great post!

Photos can be hit or miss for me. In all honesty, and I know how bratty this may sound, but sometimes photos can work AGAINST a blogger. If I’ve loved their content but their photos bother me, I get annoyed and stop reading! I also think some bloggers use photos TOO much! I get annoyed when I have to scroll through a million and a half photos for two seconds worth of content.

I think the challenge is finding the appropriate amount of photos. Enough to add some interest, but not too much where the reader is interrupted by images. I think for photography and fashion type blogs it makes sense to add a lot of graphics, but otherwise, I don’t think they’re needed all that much!

Stacy March 16, 2011 at 8:34 am

Your casserole looks delish! Did you cook the quinoa before putting them in the casserole dish? I’m going to try and make this tonight!

janetha March 16, 2011 at 9:50 am

Yep, I noted in the directions that I cooked the quinoa in chicken broth for extra flavor.. but you could just cook it in water and it would be fine!

katshealthcorner March 16, 2011 at 9:11 am

Yah, I feel that without pictures it makes it harder, but like you said, if it is a blog I love, I don’t mind. :)

I try to take my pictures in the daytime. It varies depending on where there is better lighting. :D

Marg March 16, 2011 at 9:16 am

Great discussion, it helps to see what others like! Content is most important to me, I understand a lot of people have busy schedules and don’t have the time to get great photos all the time. I do like seeing photos with a post, but I don’t like seeing 10 pictures of the same dish at different angles either. Only time quality really matters to me is if it’s a site I go to for recipes, then I like to see nice pictures – properly exposed, good color temperature.

Oh you can find a photo box/tent on Amazon for around $40-50 w/lights. Kinda pricey vs. DIY though.

Heather March 16, 2011 at 9:30 am

As long as the photos aren’t blurry, I’m ok with it. I like lots of pics!!
I’m jealous that you have an extra room for your at home workouts. Mine are done in our living room with the boys looking on if they’re around!

Lauren March 16, 2011 at 9:31 am

I usually shoot my pictures on the counter where there is a big window looking out on to the deck, or on the island beside the deck doors. Both areas (during the day obviously) have lots of natural light.

Jess March 16, 2011 at 9:38 am

Content definitely comes first for me. I like good pictures, but if that’s all that’s there, I’ll skim through and not really get anything from it.

TheNewHealthy March 16, 2011 at 9:41 am

Your quinoa casserole sounds so delicious–and simple too! I take photos in a few different places depending on the time of day. I have a little table that I carry around with me to do so! It’s actually a plant stand that I bought from Ikea, but it works perfectly! :)

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine March 16, 2011 at 10:01 am

I think photos are important, but they don’t have to be great. Really terrible photography where you can’t even see the food isn’t pleasant to look at, but I think people do a great job with point and shoots or even cell phones. As long as there’s more to it than a bright white flash!! I look back at some of my old photos and cringe, to be honest…

Running With Mascara March 16, 2011 at 10:06 am

That was fun – seeing behind the scenes of your blog! I love pictures, but I don’t want to judge too much because I’m far from a good photographer. I’d love to take a class some time, though.

That casser0le looks super tasty, especially the one with all the gooey cheese! :)

Katie March 16, 2011 at 10:48 am

I always shoot my photos at our kitchen table, which is surrounded by 3 big windows. Or, if it’s dark out (like it is when I eat breakfast, now) – I shoot my photos on top of the stove, with the overhead light on. Not ideal, but it works.

Photos make or break it for me! I love photography, and I wish I was better at it. I look back at some of my earlier posts and just cringe at the awful photos.

Michelle March 16, 2011 at 11:17 am

It’s so much fun to see bloggers “behind-the-scenes” shots. It gives me better idea of how to take great pictures! Right now I usually take pictures where ever I’m going to eat but if I snap the shot during the day, I’ll take it next to the window. Unfortunately, my apartment doesn’t have great natural lighting so eventually I’ll make a light box. Maybe. I’m lazy too :-)

cbrady3 March 16, 2011 at 11:28 am

Fun Post!! I take my pictures either on my window seat if it is light out, or in a little light box on my dining room floor when it’s dark.

And I agree with you – content comes first but pretty pictures make it even better.

emily (a nutritionist eats) March 16, 2011 at 12:10 pm

I prefer nicer photos of course, but I guess it wouldn’t make me stop reading. (But good photos will also keep me reading in addition to good content!)

Kim @ Imperfectly Perfect March 16, 2011 at 12:51 pm

Both of your casseroles look delish! Great stats too!

Usually I’m rushing around when I take my pics. On vacation I was able to focus and take some time, but normally I shoot breakfast at my desk or try to find some place where there’s natural light. I need to learn more about my camera too.

Caree @ Fit-Mama March 16, 2011 at 1:17 pm

my photos definitely need serious help!! but it definitely helps if there are lots of photos, I agree!!

And your casseroles look awesome!!!

Shannon March 16, 2011 at 1:20 pm

and we were none the wiser ;) i usually shoot mine in a makeshift light box in the corner of my living room (at least when there’s no daylight left). Otherwise i can get away with the table!

photos definitely keep me at a blog, there’s already too many i miserably attempt to keep up with that i pass on those that might not be as pretty to look at…

ps- i couldn’t tweet about it yet, but i did post my recipe for that sweet potato burrito :)
