i love my uncle sam.

in meals

no, i am not talking about this guy:

(uncle sam is a little creepy looking, no?)

i am talking about this stuff:

IMG_8740

oh yes. you know my one true love (aside from marshall, of course…) is cereal. my foodie friend annelies (who i met at the foodbuzz festival) works for attune foods and she asked if i’d like to try a few of the uncle sam cereals. obviously, i quickly agreed! with maybe too much enthusiasm. what can i say, i love cereal!

all of the uncle sam cereal has a short ingredient list, is high in fiber, low in sugar and contains healthy fats.

IMG_8743IMG_8744IMG_8742

everything looks good on the outside.. but the real question is how does it taste?

IMG_8750

let’s start with the original uncle sam.

IMG_8751

okay, this cereal was made for me. i don’t really dig sweet cereal and this four ingredient box of heaven has zero sweeteners added to it. look—less that 1 gram of sugar!

IMG_8765

plus.. ten grams of fiber and seven grams of protein. those are numbers i can get behind.

i also love the flax seeds that are speckled throughout the cereal.  because this cereal is not sweet at all, it would be ideal for breading chicken or as a topper to baked mac & cheese. you know, savory things!

next up: uncle sam great multi grains.

IMG_8757

this cereal was a lot like the original version but a tad sweeter and there were some flakes thrown into the mix.  still, only 6 grams of sugar per 3/4 cup serving.

IMG_8766

like i said, i like less sweet cereals, and this sweetness was by no means overpowering. it reminded me of honey bunches of oats in a way.  i think this would work so well in a muffin recipe!

IMG_8752

finally: uncle sam wild strawberry.

IMG_8758

lots of fiber, lots of protein and slightly sweetened. still, this sweeter cereal has significantly less sugar grams than your typical sugary cereal.

IMG_8764

okay, have you guys ever tried special K with red berries? i have, and i liked it.. but it is full of super whack chemicals and ingredients and it’s not good for you! this uncle sam wild strawberry is like a healthy version of the special K. i loved it. the berries were very abundant!

IMG_8748

I always added a little more milk to bowls of this cereal because i like the strawberries to re-hydrate a bit.

i loved all of these cereals!  annelies said she can’t wait to see what recipes i make with the cereal.. but honestly i have just been eating them by the bowlful with skim or almond milk.

IMG_8997

so here is my recipe:

  • 3/4 cup uncle sam cereal (any kind)
  • 1/2 of a  banana, diced
  • splash of milk (any kind) <—i hate soggy cereal! i keep it to a splash

i know, how lame am i? but who can resist a delicious bowl of cereal?

IMG_9000

i do plan to make some fiber-filled muffins and crunchy breaded chicken with the cereal in the near future.. as long as i don’t run out. once i start eating a box of cereal, it’s hard to stop!

i bet you would like to try some uncle sam cereal for yourself, no?

you’re in luck! attune foods has generously offered to send one lucky winner a shipment of three boxes of uncle sam cereal!

Claire March 3, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Unfortunately right now my heart is actually not healthy. But the good news is that I am working towards making it a healthy heart!! I am eating a lot of calories every day to boost my weight and metabolism and the great thing is that i am acheiving a balance between “dessert”-y items and healthy items like whole grains, protein (eggs & fish & cottage cheese, in addition to turkey and even the occasional beef. yum yum!) nut butters, veggies, and fruits. :)

cbrady3 March 3, 2011 at 7:03 pm
