the best thing i ever ate.

by Janetha on February 24, 2011

in meals

is that title going too far? you may think so.. but i honestly think that last sunday’s brunch was in fact one of the best, if not the very best, things i have EVER consumed.

last sunday i was in chicago. remember? yep.

IMG_8568

someone told me i had to go to the bongo room for breakfast. who told me to do that? i want to send you a thank you card. no, seriously, THANK YOU.

kristen and i were on our own on sunday, so we had big plans to go to the field museum since we struck out the day before. there was a bongo room conveniently located right by the museum, so we made plans to eat there for brunch.

the hour wait was rough, especially because we were starving, but i was sure the wait would be worth it. boy, was i right.

because we were both in the mood for sweet AND savory, we decided to order two dishes to split.

first, the savory: sweet potato black bean burrito. spinach tortilla stuffed with pureed black beans, pureed sweet potato, guacamole & scrambled eggs. topped with jack cheese. served with ancho chile sour cream, tomatillo salsa and hash browns.IMG_8570

hello, amazing.

IMG_8574

cross section shot.

IMG_8577

with every bite i took, i kept saying how well all the ingredients worked together. the beans. the sweet potatoes. the guac. oh.. the guac! this was the BEST breakfast burrito i have ever eaten. and i have eaten a LOT of breakfast burritos, folks. this one is the winner of them all. it was pure culinary genius in a tortilla.

and now, for the sweet. oh, the sweet. IMG_8572

that, my friends, is heaven on a plate.

IMG_8571

on special, JUST FOR US (i am convinced)—brown sugar brioche grench toast with warm vanilla bean crème, butter & brown sugar caramelized bartlett pears & dried cherries topped with oatmeal crisp.  (side note, the one below the one we got—the white chocolate pretzel pancakes? those sound amazing as well!)

UM. yeah, you can drool!

IMG_8573

wow. just wow. words can’t describe how this tasted.

so, moral of the story? fly to chicago, go to the bongo room and INSIST they make you these two dishes. even if you don’t have someone to share with—you will want to eat them both for yourself. they are both so amazing!

whew.. ok.. now onto the field museum.. home of the most complete T rex skeleton to date! pretty cool, eh?

IMG_8582

roar. that’s my dino face.

IMG_8583

the field museum was pretty rad! tons of interesting history and artifacts. and elephants.

IMG_8584

my favorite part of the field museum was the dinosaur exhibit. i had never seen dinosaur bones in real life. all the displays were at least 90% all real dinosaur bones (the rest being made up of casts to make the skeletons complete).

IMG_8598

check out this giant wooly mammoth! he was a big guy!

IMG_8604

after the museum, kristen and i did some more shopping. there was a 4 story crate & barrel! of course we went in and i snagged a few fun items. we also got danny & derrick some things for their apartment as a late house warming gift.

since it was our last night, we decided to go out to a nice restaurant and have a farewell dinner. it was pouring down rain, but that didn’t stop us from making the journey to tango sur.

IMG_8606

this BYOB argentine steakhouse came highly recommended by kristen’s friend. the whole restaurant was very dark and we dined by candle light. the atmosphere was fun and fancy. i really liked it!

IMG_8608

we started with the antipasto platter to share.

IMG_8611IMG_8613

there was also some delicious bread and a pretty boring salad (just lettuce, onion & tomato).

IMG_8618

for my entrée, i ordered the filet mignon which came with the most flavorful, delicious spinach mashed potatoes.IMG_8620

although they look like a pile of mush.. those potatoes were basically a green pillow of heaven. everyone at the table agreed. so dang good!

IMG_8621

great last dinner in chicago!

we went back to the apartment and talked about high school and ate vanilla bean ice cream straight from the container. it was the best.

Qs~

1. what is the best thing you ever ate? i know. that’s a hard question. answer if you can.

2. what is your favorite way to eat potatoes? so many ways.. roasted, french fried, mashed, scalloped, baked.. ahh.. the possibilities are endless. i think my favorite is roasted.

holy cow. that french toast is insane.

Matt @ The Athlete's Plate February 24, 2011 at 5:03 am

That breakfast looks like pure heaven.

Erica February 24, 2011 at 5:04 am

WOW! What a good looking breakfast. I want the burrito like…now. And the spinach mashed potatoes sound fabulous too. Such a great trip :) I can’t pick out the best thing I ever ate….too many delicious options. And I am a huge fan of roasted potatoes. They’re like perfection. Have a good day!

VeggieGirl February 24, 2011 at 5:07 am

HOLY YUM that looks amazing!!

1.) Anything chocolate ;)

2.) roasted

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) February 24, 2011 at 5:08 am

The fact that you had the best thing you’ve EVER eaten in Chicago makes me feel so happy. And proud of my former city :)

Chicago has fabulous people and food, great things to do and see, it’s truly an awesome city. Except for the snow and traffic/road construction!

Best thing I ever ate was an amazing dinner at the Bellagio (Michael Mina’s restaurant) in Vegas with Scott about 5-7 yrs ago. The meal was epic and perfect. I could go on and on. I will never forget it :)

janetha February 24, 2011 at 9:04 am

well you can’t say that without saying what the meal was!

Kelly February 24, 2011 at 5:25 am

I don’t know if I could ever pin down what was the best thing I ever ate. One of the best was a honey wheat bread with butter straight from the oven my husband made me once while we were dating. I had fallen asleep waiting for it to be done and didn’t even open my eyes to take a taste. It was amazing!

My recent favorite way to eat potatoes are my pesto Brie home fries. They’re delicious!

Marisa @ Loser for Life February 24, 2011 at 5:37 am

Wow, that is some good eatin’!!! I am booking my flight now!!!

Di February 24, 2011 at 5:55 am

That french toast looks AMAZING.

My favorite way is definitely roasted. :)

lindsay February 24, 2011 at 6:01 am

if that french toast tastes just as good as it looks, then I would have died and gone to heaven. Thats just insanely good looking!

maria @ Chasing the Now February 24, 2011 at 6:03 am

Oh my gosh… that French toast! I think I am going to have to make some French toast myself now….

withasideofhope February 24, 2011 at 6:06 am

Wow! I really do need to fly out to Chicago asap! That breakfast looks amazing!!!!! The spinach mashed potatoes look so interesting! I definitely need to try them too!

I love roasted potatoes with some garlic salt. They are my favorite :)

Kristin (Cook, Bake, Nibble) February 24, 2011 at 6:09 am

That looks SO amazing! I need to make it to chicago sometime soon!

I love dinosaurs.

The best thing I ever ate?? Wow that’s hard. I had some pretty fantastic salmon in Banff. And the Oatmeal Pancake I ate here in Toronto was freaking amazing. Though, nearly everything I ate in Italy probably beat those both. So it’s a tough call!!

I’m not a huge potato fan, but I do love good roasted potatoes. I prefer sweet potatoes :)

xo

Katie February 24, 2011 at 6:15 am

holy love that looks AMAZING!!!! I will have to def go to Bongo Room next time my Mike and I are in chicago!!!!! So glad you had a wonderful time in Chicago! It is a great city! It has my heart for sure : )

love u! xoxo Happy Thursday!!

MAJL February 24, 2011 at 6:17 am

What a brunch! Thanks for telling us about this place; we will check it out in March and we have or order planned.
The best thing I ever ate was this piece of house-smoked ivory salmon at Bamboo Sushi in Portland. It was this tiny little piece of sashimi but it was just so flavourful and unique.

kristastes February 24, 2011 at 6:25 am

That french toast belongs on a food porn website. droooool.
The best thing I ever ate…elk medallions from this restaurant in Sun Valley, ID! I am a huge fan of wild game, although I know it’s not for everyone!

janetha February 24, 2011 at 9:04 am

i love elk!

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine February 24, 2011 at 6:32 am

Oh my God that french toast. I can SEE how good it is! Best thing I ever ate is probably the chocolate mint sundae at Pure Food and Wine. Life changing.

MelissaNibbles February 24, 2011 at 6:36 am

That French toast is too much for me to handle right now. I haven’t found the best thing I ever ate. I’m on the hunt!

Katie February 24, 2011 at 6:46 am

Oh my word…both of those breakfasts look insane. If i’m ever in chicago – I’m hitting that up.

The best thing I ever ate was actually a steak (surprising since I don’t really love meat) in NYC. I was dying it was so delicious…every bite was bliss.

Kathie February 24, 2011 at 6:50 am

Whoa!! AMAZING!!!

Chocolate is always the most awesome for me to eat!

Annie February 24, 2011 at 6:55 am

The best thing I ever ate was also in Chicago! The tasting menu at Alinea. It’s 14 courses/bites and all of your senses are involved. I’ll never forget it!

Favorite way to eat potatoes (besides as waffle fries) would be roasted.

Jess February 24, 2011 at 6:57 am

I had an amazing meal in Vancouver -steak and shrimp and strawberry shortcake for dessert. i’ll never forget it! ;)

Kelly February 24, 2011 at 7:04 am

Wow…the best thing I ever ate? That will make you think. I am sure as I think about one thing something else will pop up. But right now…to date…I am going to with the seared Ahi Tuna from the Hula Grill in Maui on Ka’anapli Beach. Holy amaziness!!!

Nicole February 24, 2011 at 7:12 am

Oh man, that breakfast!! I’m in awe of how delicious it looks. WANT!

reesimplelife February 24, 2011 at 7:23 am

all I can say about potatoes is duck fat! Potatoes and duck fat were meant to be together. I know it sounds kinda weird but ohh it is so good. Obviously not an everyday meal, I mean we are taking duck fat. Best meal was in Watertown, NY a little Italian restaurant, best homemade cannolis, pasta, salads, everything ever!

janetha February 24, 2011 at 9:06 am

haha, i laughed out loud when you said, “I mean we are taking duck fat”! i gotta try this!

Allison February 24, 2011 at 7:27 am

I am so glad you enjoyed the Bongo Room!! It is definitely the best breakfast I’ve ever had! I had no idea there was one right near the Field Museum – I must check it out. Those pics are amazing!! Yay Chicago!

Allison @ Food For Healing February 24, 2011 at 7:43 am

i want to eat all that food. right. now.
i want to see a museum like that one day, its a goal now.
i like almost any form of potato, although I dont eat potatoes often.

Freckled Foodie February 24, 2011 at 7:55 am

mmmm. i bet you coudl recreate that burrito at home! i’m def. going to try!

xo.

Rachel S February 24, 2011 at 8:02 am

So I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and love it! You’re great!

Anyways, my boyfriend lives in Chicago and we went to the Bongo Room and ordered the same exact two dishes. Crazy how they both drew our attentions. But HOLY YUMM! They were so delicious!

janetha February 24, 2011 at 9:11 am

oh my gosh! THAT IS SO CRAZY!!! and awesome. we both have great taste ;)

my little celebration February 24, 2011 at 8:16 am

I did, in fact, drool a little bit at your french toast.

My favorite way to have potatoes is roasted to a state of crispy with gobs of ketchup on the side : )

Michelle February 24, 2011 at 8:20 am

You went to 2 of my favorite places in the city!! The white chocolate pretzel pancakes are heaven on a plate as well!!!

runyogarepeat February 24, 2011 at 8:28 am

Wow, I re-read that burrito description like 5 times and it just sounds incredible!

Kristen February 24, 2011 at 8:42 am

YAY!!
I told you to go to the Bongo Room :) I’m so glad you went. I hit that joint up *every* time I go…it is to the point that the employees now recognize us. My boyfriend and I always order a sweet and a savory and share. For the sweet items, you can order just one (like one pc of french toast), so we typically order two sweets (one of each). We ALWAYS get the white chocolate pretzel pancakes.
I can say with confidence that we’ll be there, eating that on Saturday, March 12.
I’m smiling as I type this, so glad you got to enjoy one of my faves!!

Sarah February 24, 2011 at 8:57 am

that meal looks amazing!

i think my favorite way to eat potatoes is baked and loaded with cheese, sour cream, green onions, etc…

Tamizn February 24, 2011 at 9:30 am

That does indeed look like a delicious meal! I can’t think of the best thing I have ever eaten this needs a lot of thought………..

Favorite way to eat potatoes hmmmmm well I don’t generally eat them as I’m not that keen but on the odd occasion I do like a big bag of english chips yum yum yum : )

elise February 24, 2011 at 9:54 am

holy fuckballs i am drooling. sorry i had to swear, no other words would do. im pretty in love with that burrito.

Stephanie February 24, 2011 at 10:06 am

That burrito would top my list I’m just SURE of it. Potatoes….any way but gone. :)

Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) February 24, 2011 at 10:12 am

I love burritos of all kinds, esp breakfast burritos. That one you had for breakfast look SO GOOD! OMG. I love anything with sweet pot’s and black beans. Sweet pot’s and black beans + burrito + yummy guac = pure BLISS!!

Paige (Running Around Normal) February 24, 2011 at 10:28 am

That burrito looks spectacular!!
I love the dino exhibit at that museum :) It’s really incredible. Love your dinosaur face :-P

Rose February 24, 2011 at 11:08 am

There’s a place by our house that serves curry mashed potatoes, and they are AMAZING. drooooooooooooool.

The best thing I ever ate? Oh, god, I have no idea. I’ve had some pretty amazing stuff. I could narrow it down by genre. Also, my experiences are tainted by how I feel. One of the best hamburgers I ever ate was post-marathon-2. My brother brought it to me at the finish line. I have no idea of the quality of the burger, but I had called him and ordered it from him around mile 17, and it was exactly what my mouth and body wanted. Heaven.

snackgirlgoeshealthy February 24, 2011 at 11:10 am

That’s insane looking good. I could use a couple of those bad boy burritos right now.

gahh. I REALLY want one.

AND Krista is so right! That french toast dessert totally belongs on food porn website! So yummy!!

emily (a nutritionist eats) February 24, 2011 at 11:23 am

drooling. big time.

321delish February 24, 2011 at 11:33 am

OH.MY.GOSH.

that french toast brioche whateeever it is looks amazing. It is one of those things that if I try to recreate, I will take so many tastes as I make it that there will be nothing left in the end!
HOLY YUM!

mmmstories February 24, 2011 at 11:58 am

Oh YESSS. I’ve never been but now I want to go there NOW.

One of my favorite restaurants is Max Brenner’s – everything is chocolate-ized!

Lisa @ Healthy Diaries February 24, 2011 at 12:07 pm

I am SOO glad that I live 30 minutes from Chicago so I can go to the Bongo Room!! I’ve never been there nor heard of it!
Thank so much! That french brioche looks to die for!!

Kate February 24, 2011 at 12:17 pm

And now I’m booking a ticket to Chicago…! The food looks amazing!! Seriously! It has me thinking of how I can recreate that burrito!

I can’t commit to a “best thing I ever ate”. I will say this though: The “Creme Brulee Oats” at Le Gourmandise has to be ONE of the best ways I have EVER eaten oatmeal. :) It’s seriously amazing.

I have committment issues, because I can’t choose a favorite way to eat potatos. I love ’em mashed with garlic (and cream and butter…) but I also love hash browns. Basically, surround them with fat and I’ll eat ’em! Yum!

K is for Karma February 24, 2011 at 12:25 pm

Holy yowza — that looks amazeballs!!! My whole family is from Chicago — and while I love the museums and restaurants, I have yet to go to the Bongo Room!!! Don’t worry…I will remedy that soon…I promise!

Heather February 24, 2011 at 12:42 pm
