happy national peanut butter day! did you celebrate? i think today is the first day in, like, a week that i haven’t eaten any peanut butter. i may have to have a spoonful before bed.
for those of you here for the meals & moves.. here are today’s:
breakfast: 4 egg whites + salsa; oatmeal + bananas + cinnamon + SF syrup; black coffee.
no photos.. but you can imagine what it would look like… typical monday sales meeting meal. i don’t want to bore you guys with the same photos every monday.
lunch: mediterranean wrap: low carb high fiber wrap + sun dried tomato hummus + herb roasted turkey + sprouts + spring greens + feta; 2 clementines; an adora calcium disc.
tin foil works wonders when packing wraps for lunch. plus, it looks so classy in photos. ha. right.
citrus is SO. GOOD. RIGHT. NOW.
snack: toasted double fiber english muffin + cream cheese + raspberry jam.
because i am addicted.
dinner: annies mac + steamed asparagus + diced chicken breast + fresh chopped basil + chobani + shredded cheddar.
this was fun, quick and new! and tasty. i simply chopped some pre-cooked chicken breast, fresh basil and a bunch of asparagus..![]()
steamed the asparagus..
cooked this box of annie’s ancient grains mac & white cheddar..![]()
then mixed it all together with 1/4 cup plain chobani greek yogurt, 1/4 cup shredded cheddar and some fresh ground salt and pepper. it was perfect!
the greek yogurt really added a kick and the asparagus was a fun addition. i am glad I steamed it prior to mixing it in, it created the perfect texture and chew factor. also, dicing it into small pieces (smaller than the noodles) made the asparagus distribution work out real well.
dessert: we made ice cream AGAIN!
this time it was heath bar crunch from the ben & jerry’s recipe book.
teri, i am going to blame you when i die from ice cream overdose.
making it at home is just too easy NOT to make regularly and the ben & jerry’s book makes the ice cream way too delicious NOT to make every night.
seriously incredible.
jackie kicked my butt today! LOVE this DVD. i did it between my snack and dinner.
i had a huge glass of skim milk post-workout.
i can already feel the DOMS setting in.
now, for those of you here for an incredibly long ramble about my views on drugs and alcohol.. here you go. if not, skip to the bottom and comment about how amazing that ice cream looks.
i typed this post and erased it and typed it and thought about not posting it. but.. whatever. it is part of who i am today, so it should be posted. and maybe it will help people. i hope.
day 3 of the 30 day challenge: discuss your views on drugs & alcohol.
i don’t think i have enough time to really dive into all my thoughts on this topic. there are lots. i will try to put my views in a post shorter than moby dick. this is a topic that really hits close to home.. so this may get lengthy.
also, i am sure this post is going to make my mom cringe.. i am sorry in advance.
first up: drugs.
drugs are the worst. sure, lots of people will tell you drugs are bad.. but, chances are, the majority of people preaching “say no to drugs” haven’t done a whole bunch of drugs in their lives.
i have.
i really have never talked about my past drug use on the blog. partially because i don’t think that is something everyone needs to know about me and partially because that is behind me and i don’t prefer to reminisce about my drug use. but—since this is a challenge, i will (wo)man up and say a few things about my views on drugs.
many of you know i was raised LDS (mormon) and, while drugs are not okay for ANYONE to do, they are extra not OK when you are raised in a very religious household. i grew up totally against drugs and never in a million years thought i would do them. in my junior year of high school, half of the student body was doing all sorts of different drugs like it was no big deal. back then, ecstasy was all the rage. not sure if it is now, i sure hope not.
anyway, while i refused to drink alcohol of any kind (“it would taste bad!”) or smoke cigarettes or weed like lots of kids (“that is disgusting, it stinks!”)—there was something about “just taking a pill” that seemed SO harmless. and so easy. i was around people all the time who were doing ecstasy every weekend like it was no big deal. eventually, i decided to try it. i know they say marijuana is the “gateway” drug.. but not in my case. in fact, i know so many people who started out doing ecstasy simply because it was so accessible and, well, easy to swallow. quite literally. they’d take it willingly without a second thought, not knowing the damage that ecstasy can cause.
well, that opened up a whole different world for me. my teenage rebellion started and i ended up dabbling in more drugs than i can count on one hand. but less than i can count on two hands, luckily. not that there is a bright side to this, but if there was one.. it would be that i only used drugs recreationally. strictly recreationally. i never did them because i felt like i needed to or because i was craving a “fix”—i just did them for fun on the weekends. it seems like that was the thing to do.. nobody was getting drunk, everyone was just going to raves and doing drugs. what the?
i was 18 here. ravin’ it up.
after a few run-ins with the law and some serious situations with my parents.. i slowly but surely realized that drugs were lame. sure, they were fun for awhile.. but they were getting me nowhere. they were messing with my life. the were RUINING my life. so i stopped. i don’t even remember the last time i did those crazy drugs.. but i do remember that i just decided to quit one day. and can i just say THANK YOU, JANETHA, for not having an addictive nature. it was very easy for me to stop. i said “this is ruining my life. i am going to stop.” so i did. just like that.
it makes me crazy to think about the drugs i used to do and how careless i was. sure, everyone i knew was also doing the same drugs so i deemed it “safe”—but it wasn’t! getting drugs from who knows where and putting them into my body without a second thought? i am honestly surprised that i am not dead. or in prison. not even exaggerating. my ex-boyfriend of 5 years on and off just received a prison sentence. many, many, MANY of my friends (too many to name) have died from overdoses. thank goodness i stopped when i did.
i know that spilling my guts about my past with drugs is not really meals & moves standard.. but maybe someone out there reading this is in the same boat, doing drugs and getting nowhere because of them. if that is the case, you should quit. using drugs will ruin you physically and mentally. they are bad for your body and bad for your soul. they’re good for nothing. this is what i firmly believe.
my two cents. take it how you will.
next up: alcohol.
this topic isn’t quite as heavy for me, but i will tell you my story.
as i mentioned, i grew up in a very active LDS family and the consumption of alcohol is against the religion. it’s funny, because i would go to various friends’ houses and see bottles of beer or liquor and think it was the WORST THING EVER. i would also think the same thing when i saw a coffee maker in a friends’ home, but that is a story for another day (mormons can’t drink coffee.) anyway, i grew up being taught that alcohol was really bad and by no means should i ever consume it. i really never had the desire to try drinking alcohol at all. i thought it smelled bad and imagined it would taste just as bad as it smelled. i remember one time—i think it was my junior year of high school—i visited my old friend in colorado. her family is catholic and having alcohol in the house was normal. we thought it would be a good idea to try a few different liquors. it was ridiculous, because we mixed things like orange juice and dark rum. totally disgusting. i don’t think we got more than a few sips down before calling it quits.
i decided that alcohol wasn’t really my thing (but apparently, drugs were?) and so i didn’t ever drink. i would have the occasional zima (flavored with a watermelon jolly rancher) or a really, really watered down cocktail.. but i hated the way alcohol tasted. and by NO means was i willing to even take a SIP of beer. in my eyes, it was repulsive.
i remember the first time i decided to try beer. it was the day after my friends had had a keg. oh—back up. FYI, kegs in utah are a big deal. beer in utah is 3.2% alcohol by volume and kegs are illegal. wyoming is a short drive away and the “thing” to do is to go get a keg of beer, bring it back to salt lake city and charge all your friends $5 for a cup and end up making a bunch of money from the keg.. but it was money well earned due to the risk of driving the keg back into utah.. illegally. these parties are just referred to as “kegs”.. not sure how that goes in other states, but that is how it is here in utah. there, now you know. anyway.. it was the day after a keg and there was some flat keg beer left over. EVERYONE was bugging me to try it and i kept refusing. after lots of convincing, i ended up tasting it and absolutely hated it. looking back, this is no surprise. even the biggest beer lover would hate flat, warm beer! come on! that pretty much blew it on the beer front for me and i stuck to the mixed drinks.
HA. this photo reminds me of number five from yesterday’s post!
eventually i decided drugs were whack (thank goodness!) and stuck to drinking on the weekends. i developed a taste for beer and only drank the kinds that i deemed delicious. i slowly gave up liquor all together because it made me puke my guts out. so, beer it was, for several years.
i think most people go through the stage in their early 20’s of drinking a lot on the weekends. it is a part of life. it’s just sad when people don’t know when to stop and they have 19 DUI’s by the time they are 30. yes, i know someone in that boat. for me, and probably several other kids who were raised in my religion, i think the novelty of drinking alcohol is more intense than those who were raised around people casually drinking alcohol. my friends who were not mormon didn’t really feel the need to sneak around and get drunk. their parents drank alcohol in moderation and they knew that they would be able to do the same once they turned 21.
anyway, back to my drinking story. i would drink with friends and slowly the number of weekends that i would go out drinking became less and less. then one day i was over it. i just got sick of going to the bar and getting wasted all the time. i am not sure what happened or why i was suddenly over it.. but i was. when i started dating marshall, my drinking went from minimal to nearly non existent. he doesn’t drink at all. at first, i would try to drag him to the bar and i would get mad if he didn’t have fun.. but looking back, that wasn’t fair. i can see why he didn’t want to go and that was rude of me for trying to make him.
i ended up rationalizing that i would rather have a bowl of ice cream rather than a bottle of beer. ice cream > beer. but that’s just me.
now days i will have an occasional adult beverage, but they are few and far between. i will drink beer or wine because i like the way they taste, not just to get drunk. i really do enjoy the taste of good beer. i am not so keen on wine as i don’t really have a palette for good vs bad wine.
finally, i want to just say that now that i am older.. i look back on my crazy younger years and have two thoughts:
1. i am genuinely sorry that i put my parents through what i did. however, i am so glad they were there for me through all the rough times.. they are truly heroes in my eyes. and i am a little scared to have kids of my own…
2. i am glad that i have a first hand opinion on this stuff. i learned a lot from my past and it has helped me become the person i am today. while i would take back several of the specific things that i did, i wouldn’t take back the life lessons.. they are solid gold.
so, in short.. my views:
drugs are bad.
alcohol is OK in moderation.
i am so glad that i am in the place i am today.
the end.
that was long. i need a nap.
Qs~
1. what are your views on drugs and alcohol?
or.. if that is too much of a loaded question..
2. do you ever spruce up boxed mac & cheese? how?
and if that one doesn’t interest you..
3. how did you celebrate national peanut butter day today?

homemade heath bar crunch ice cream FTW.
Thanks for sharing your story, Janetha. I pretty much agree with you- I don’t think there is anything wrong with anything unaddictive (which isn’t a word) if it is in moderation.
I like to put veggies in my mac & cheese- especially broccoli!
hey love, thanks for being soooo honest! i had a bf in my past who used to be a damn drug dealer! i never did try drugs, weed or pills but i have seen what it has done to people and you are so amazing for having that will power and all to just STOP. power to you!!
and um foil…look at my first two pics today, haha. ya foil is amazing, keeps the sammies from slipping apart.
Believe it or not I have never tried drugs or been drunk. A lot coming from a girl who lives in Vegas right. How did I not do drugs while going to a private catholic school where the rich kids had the money..I was too shy and uncool! I let my brother make the mistakes.
Drugs don’t do anything good for anyone. I don’t mind medical marijuana but I hope its not legalized. My aunt was killed by a drunk driver equalling me never drinking, plus alcoholism on both sides of my family..no thanks..dr. pepper is my addiction.
Well there ya go, more personal than you were asking but hey, it the truth.
holy deep thoughts. soooo, i really think you are amazing for putting it all out there like that. im also really glad you have rad parents to stick with you and support you even when they may have wanted to kill you (not really). and also, im glad you have marshall, because hes a packers fan (and he seems cool for many other reasons, including his ability to stick to his guns even when your hot ass was dragging him to bars and he was dead set on courting you). and finally, im glad you are sensible enough to stand up for what you believe even if its not the cool thing. maybe it took a while after experimenting, but eventually you realized it wasnt so cool. and thats impressive.
i dont have a drug story. i have never been tempted and they dont appeal to me.
alcohol is something i was raised around because my fam owns a vineyard. wine was treated like a gift, like a fine thing you savored and enjoyed. not something you drank to get trashed. i also have two alcoholic uncles, which played a part in how my parents treated alcohol. this wasnt revealed to me until i was old enough to understand it, but i knew that it was genetic and so that was probably always in the back of my mind. anyway, i am rambling, so ill peace out now. thanks for sharing buddy. :)
They aren’t for me, but drinking and drug use has its place. The only reason anyone drinks or uses drugs is because it makes them them happier than not do so
Last time I had boxed mac&cheese was in the freshman dorms (around the last time I smoked weed too) sometime last century. Making the entire box instead of one packet would be the way to go. But then I may as well just eat something that will at least have some nutrition
At the store I did imagine eating an entire jar of peanut butter. In my mind it would be very good well it lasts, but wouldn’t last very long and only a few ounces so not very filling. So I passed on it. For now
what a great post, i feel like i’ve had quite the journey as well. just with alcohol, but i definitely feel bad for the way i treated my parents when i was in those fun teenage stages ;) but we’re in such a great place now!
I didn’t try weed till I was 19…. I did it maybe 3-4 times, but I HATED it, I couldn’t tell if I was thinking or saying things and knew that just wasn’t for me. In ever did any other drugs, but my Dad did enough in his youth for the both of us. I went through a 2 month period where I partied hard every weekend and then was done, partying just wasn’t my thing full-time. I still enjoy going out and partying it up every once and awhile, but I definitely prefer moderation. I do enjoy a good glass of wine or a cocktail every once in awhile.
It was very brave of you to post your thoughts and feelings, I’m sure your mom and dad are very proud of you! I know I am!!!!
You are such a brave honest soul.
I’m also grateful to be a “Been there, done that, happy to still be here to tell the tale.” My only vice these days is coffee. I can barely metabolize alcohol so feeling so sick just isn’t worth it.
As long as no one starts “Just say NO to ice cream” campaign we’re good. :) love ya!
First off…
I’m really loving this post. its so honest and raw and I totally understand where your coming from. I talked to you briefly about your drug past at foodbuzz, but foodbuzz is naturally never long enough so I never really got to hear the whole story. My parents were very “liberal”. I guess its because they arent american? My father is Belgian where beer is usually a morning drink (half kidding) so he raised me to have a sip of alcohol if I wanted. So I never really craved it and to be honest, I was so eating disordered in my teens that I was afraid of the calories. now I honestly dont love the taste of most alcoholic drinks. The crappy bit is I have a liver condition and I can’t drink these days. My mom smoked pot when she had cancer. Chemo is a bitch and I think it helped her sideeffects. But regardless, I know she used to be a bit of hippie. Again, I suppose I was never told, “no drugs” so I never got interested. My drug was food and exercise. It almost killed me and ruined my life much like you describe pills did to you. It left me with osteoporosis, hip fractures, brittle nails, little hair…and eventually ended me in rehab. It was the best decision I made. Ok I’m rambling….but thats my bit. I dont judge people on their drug/alcohol use, but I dont really mess with them, if that makes me nerdy so be it.
ok, I think I wrote a novel so I’ll leave it at that. I’m so proud you’ve gotten to where you are!
O, I did want to mention how I spruce up mac’n cheese!
I puree roasted butternut squash and mix it with the cheese! I also use BBQ popchips as the topping! And mushrooms, mushrooms are always welcome on anything I eat!
I have touched on my battle, but let’s just say I didn’t really do much in the way of drugs in high school (some pot) and definitely had my share of jolly rancher flavored Zimas (too funny)… I was 21 when I touched my first hard drug and had quite a rough subsequent 4 years… enough to make me stop everything entirely. 9/24/07 is my sobriety date, and my life is MUCH better for it. I too am so grateful I never ended up with a DUI or in prison, or dead. Props to people who can drink with impunity. And drugs *are* bad, mmmk?
great post, i really enjoyed reading this. brave of you to put it all out there like that. i actually joined the lds church in high school, and had a rough road of it with weed/alcohol until i moved to utah to go to byu. i don’t do any of it anymore, but i know what you mean about being glad you have a first-hand perspective. i’m glad i’m at the place i am today, too. not sure if i’ve ever commented before, but i really love your blog, it’s one of the ones i look forward to reading every day. thanks so much!
Wow, JBean, amazing story. I knew that we spoke about it, but it really hits home when it’s written down. I’m also glad that you aren’t in jail or worse- 6 feet under- thank gooooooodness!
I think that both drugs and alcohol are dangerous in the wrong hands (mouth). Just because alcohol is legal doesn’t mean it isn’t one bad mo-fo when done to excess. I remember my Dad’s doctor saying that alcohol causes way more medical problems than pot ever could (then again, booze is legal and easy to get, right?)
I wish you were here now in the desert- there is sooooooooooooooo much amazing citrus. I’ll save some for you!
your raw honesty is totally refreshing to find. you are always honest, but you are especially honest today, thank you :)
I have plenty of thoughts on drugs and alcohol. And I have learned that what i type in comment fields IS read and remembered by people so I’m not going to go into my personal past or deep views.
But I have (and still do) witness…tons of using (both drugs and alcohol). I have seen the underbelly, the dark side, people who are in the grip and vice of addiction. I see it all the time. I am glad to know YOU just woke up one day and pretty much changed your life for the better :)
I love Momma B even more now…and it also helps me connect the dots why you have SUCH a strong bond with her. I get it more now.
As a totally random question, what size do you use when you upload your pics into your blog? Medium seems to small and large is way too large for me on my new WP blog. Your pics are the perfect size.
And seriously, thank you for this post, Janetha!
:)
One of the best posts I have read in a long time. Thanks for being courageous enough to write it! I have to say, I respect you a lot knowing where you’ve been and how you’ve handled it.
I grew up in the church and was taught alcohol is evil. I never tried drugs to rebel (and still never have-no interest for me), but started casually drinking with friends my senior year of high school. I joined a sorority in college and while I didn’t drink very often, when I did it was just way, way too much. My husband (then boyfriend) does not drink at all. He never has and never will just out of his own choices. Now that I’m no longer in college I rarely ever drink. Occasionally I’ll buy a bottle of wine and have a glass with dinner. Or maybe enjoy a few drinks when out with friends, but my desire isn’t there anymore.
Thanks again for the wonderful post.
thanks for this, i love that your honest enough to share this with us.
I had no idea yesterday was National PB day! Good thing I had a spoonful ;) Aren’t the adora disks the best? Its like a chocolatey treat and calcium in one. Great dinner. I like adding lots o veggies to my mac n cheese. I’m glad you wrote this post out. I had no idea about your experiences and it was cool to learn a little about you and your views. You have good reasons for all of your opinions!! PS- got your card yesterday! Could you be any sweeter? thank you so much ;)
1. what are your views on drugs and alcohol? drugs- against it, alcohol- only for it on occasion. I think its very easy for people to get out of control drinking.
2. do you ever spruce up boxed mac & cheese? how? heck yah! I love to add peas or cauliflower…or really any other veggie
3. how did you celebrate national peanut butter day today? with a little spoonful before dinner ;)
I always appreciate your honesty, J! I hate drugs. I’ve never tried them nor have I tried smoking. I grew up with smoking parents and HATED it, thinking I was being tortured. I do get the experimental mentality, but I’m glad I was smart enough to not be intrigued. On a less serious note, I love how you transisioned from drugs to mac and cheese. And that is why I love you. :)
I’ve done alot of ephedra and diet pills but I have not even smoked pot. I’m proud of that after 35 years of living. Now alcohol…um…look at that lamp!?
I haven’t had boxed mac n cheese in forever but I used to put pea and tuna in it mmm…
I did have a 1 oz pkt of PB so I guess that was a celebration!
Drugs are NOT ok for me. Alcohol is fine in moderation.
Great post!
You are so brave to share this but I have to commend you for doing so! Not many people would think this about me, but I once went through the drug phase. And like you, I was into E for a brief period. Gosh, looking back, it seems to stupid but I did learn so much from that time. I knew it was NOT the life I wanted to create for myself. So glad it was shortlived.
Again, I think you are such a strong and incredible person and thank you again for letting us see into the “real” Janetha!
I’ve never touched one drug in my entire life and am proud of it. I’ve never put a cigarette to my lips either because my mom smoked and it was disgusting. We drink in moderation but it tends to make me feel like garbage!
I was raised in a very religious household too. Although not LDS we had the same “alcohol is a sin” rules and beliefs. I grew up thinking that my dad’s parents, who were Catholic, were going to hell because they drank a beer on Fridays with dinner. It was very confusing because I knew my grandparents were good people who believed in God, but because they didn’t believe and live exactly the way we did, they were doomed. It messes with your head a little.
I don’t have a rebellious nature per se, so I never went against the grain growing up, but I do have a tendency to question things and I like to inform myself as best I can and then draw my own conclusions. So drugs? No. I think they’re best left alone. Some people can handle certain substances, but others can’t and most people who can’t don’t find out until it’s too late. My best friend was addicted to meth for 10 years. Not good. She’s been clean for 20 years, but she still suffers from the effects of what it did to her brain. Alcohol? I agree it’s fine in moderation. I like wine and good microbrewed beer, and I don’t believe that God loves me any less for it.
Its great to share these stories. A real inspiration of how to get your life in balance. I think everyone has to go through trial and error. I have to say that I enjoy my wine in moderation and I thank my parents for sending me abroad at a young age to learn about culture. This made me appreciate food, wine, life, family, etc. more than drugs/alcohol itself. You have a such a wonderful supportive family and I am sure they are proud of the woman you have become. BEAUTIFUL!
i applaud your honesty, janetha. thanks so much for sharing your history and opinions so freely. you must have hit publish and just let out a deep breath! always a little unnerving to share deeply.
never tried smoking or drugs, and don’t drink alcohol…i DO have an addictive type personality, i would say, so it’s best i don’t go there – plus they haven’t intrigued me.
thanks again for sharing.
I would be making icecream every night too if I had that icecream maker and book! Heck I would have it for dinner ; )
Love your end short view, drugs are bad alcohol is ok in moderation , I feel the same way
Growing up was hard for me, my dad drank alot, it was bad, bad things would happen, like him and my mom fighting all the time, I would be scared for my life 3 or 4 days a week when he would come home from drinking, just bad memories
Drugs, well my sons dad did those, I had to find out the hard way when he would not come home for 2 days in a row, would just disappear, and I was pregnant ( i was young , 17 ) I had no clue what he was doing but then caught on when I woke up one night in the middle of the night and he and his friends were at the table weighing coke, yeah it was bad, lots of things bad, dont even want to get into that, because I was smart ; )
Ok phew long comment!
Love u!!!!! xoxo
Great post! Love the honesty. I’m with you – drugs = bad/never ever and alcohol = OK in moderation. I’m not a big drinker anymore, though, I’d rather eat my calories!!
i love that you put yourself out there like that…and i have to agree: drugs are bad, alcohol is OK in moderation. i just would rather do things like exercise that make me feel good and nothing that would really endanger my life. and with alcohol, i’d rather eat my calories (in mac and cheese!) than drink them :)
Thanks for sharing this. I like reading REAL stuff on blogs. And, this is definitely real. I am glad that you didn’t get sucked into drugs or alcohol. I don’t like the stuff either. Like you, I would rather eat ice cream!
You are so brave for telling your story. I thank you for that. I think it is great that you are so open about your story so that other people can relate or learn about it. I really like that about your blog. You are so genuine. I am very against drugs, like you. I have never touched one in my life. I never wanted to. I drank a lot in college because I was never exposed to alcohol growing up. Looking back on it, I drank entirely too much. I think it was because it made me become more outgoing and it was a way to solve my problems. I like to have a drink here and there with dinner or to socialize. :)
Thanks for being so honest.
My views on drugs and alcohol are complicated. I hope to one day have the courage to share them on my blog, but in a nutshell, I’ve gone through periods of dabbling in drugs (or more than dabbling) but I don’t do any anymore. I still drink, but much, much less than I used to. Drugs are now cut and dry for me, I’ll never do them again, but I still have a bunch of mixed emotions about alcohol that I’ve been trying to sort out for a while.
Thanks for sharing, girl :)
I have similar views, and mostly because of my past experience but I feel the same way – I’m glad I am where I am today.
I LOVE sprucing up mac’n’cheese :) Although i’ve never seen this one by Annie’s – it sounds great!
1. couldn’t agree more. drugs = no good; alcohol = okay in moderation.
2. i haven’t had mac n’ cheese since the high school years! it’s been at least 5 yrs since my last bowl. i have some annie’s to try out, courtesy of danica, so i’ll probably throw in some steamed broccoli or mushrooms (or both?!) when i get around to it!
3. crap. totally didn’t celebrate…i did have chocolate though? that counts for something, right? :D
xo.
Thanks for sharing your story with us, Janetha. I have never done drugs or smoked cigarettes. I just have no interest in that. I drink very occasionally and typically stop after one drink. I’d rather have a diet coke!
I love adding stuff to mac-n-cheese. Broccoli and peas and quick and easy to veg’ up a bowl.
Great post today. I have a similar past with drugs and alcohol. I’m always happy to hear about other people that have worked through their issues and are now able to live happy, healthy lives. I live in Wyoming (where you would all get your kegs) :-) and our big drug is meth. Unfortunately, that is the one that I decided to try and then many others along the way. I was lost for a few years. One day, I woke up and realized I would lose everything that mattered to me if I didn’t stop. And now, 8 years later, I’m clean and sober and happy. I just hope that I can use my experiences to teach my children and hopefully, they will make much smarter choices than I did.
Anyhoo…long comment. Now I say, drugs – bad / alcohol – ok now and then. I think I’ve had three beers in the last year.
And I don’t do boxed mac-n-cheese, but I make homemade every now and then. We like to load it up on the cheese and add bacon crumbles to it. NOT healthy, but oh so tasty!
Ex-Raver here also. I was also a BIG TIME “e” user. It also was a gateway drug for me as I tried several others after that. It was a party-filled, drug filled three years before I finally realized and got out of it. The only downfall is my memory nowadays SUCKS! Big time! I swear my brain is more swiss cheese looking then i’d like. I regret my drug use so much because of that. You’re not alone.
I am SO addicted to oranges right now! I have one every day!! Citrus seems to be the go-to right now…perhaps we are all longging for Summer? heehee
I always add veggies to annie’s mac and cheese. It fills me up longer and I like the cheesy sauce on the veggies. Win all around.
I’ve never been into drugs. I’ve lost friends because they thought I was judging them for doing it, but I never did. I just didn’t want to.
I drink occasionally. I don’t really like the taste of most alochol. It has to taste like candy.
Mmm, home made ice cream…
Thanks so much for sharing your story, I hope it helps someone in a similar situation. Personally, I have also had friends die of overdoses and it is incredibly sad. I haven’t done any hard drugs in my life, but I have good friends who have, or still do, and it’s tough to see them go down that road. I’m so glad you got yourself out of that! As for alcohol, though I was not LDS, my grandparents were strict catholics and while they did drink wine on occasion, overindulging was considered “sinful” and my mother had this idea in her head for many, many years. I would get drunk in high school only because I felt I was rebelling against that standard I grew up with, and it was stupid. Now, I still drink, but in much, much more moderation. I don’t feel the need to go crazy anymore. It’s all about growing up, I think!
On a lighter note… I love adding spinach or broccoli to mac n’ cheese.
xo
Homemade ice cream is ADDICTING. I can’t wait until it’s Summer again and I can churn all sorts of flavors. I’m going to need to pick up running 50 miles again.
i ate many many spoonfuls of peanut butter and chocolate chips yesterday (oh hai moving stress!). thanks for opening up! i never did any drugs and alcohol is take it or leave it with me. i don’t drink often but i def had a few black out moments during my college career that i’m not proud of! i’m a weirdo who doesn’t like mac n cheese ;p
SO I totally want that mac&cheese dinner…I need to make is asap.
And thanks for being so honest! I’ve never done drugs but of course I drank like a fish freshman year of college…definitely cut back after that year (and gaining 20 pounds..yikes…luckily I lost it) I’ve been debating doing a post about how unhealthy I was that year compared to where I am now…I just duno if I have the guts to show pictures of myself from then. Some of them are pretty embarrassing…eek!
i love your honesty and another reason why you ROCK…seriously, very inspirational
omg mac and cheeseeeee I used to eat it with aplesauce (don’t hate it till you try it!) I grew up eating this combo SO YUM!
I reeeeeally enjoyed this. I never really experimented with drugs, but I did smoke cigarettes. GROSS!! Also, I am starting to get to the point in my life where the bar is “the same thing every weekend no matter where you go”. My bf and I are just plain sick of it. The only alcohol I actually enjoy drinking is wine anyway.
I only had pb in my oats. If I open a jar of dark chocolate dreams pb at night, I’m very much going to regret it :)
that cream cheese and jam looks like heaven, i’d be addicted too.
i dont use alcohol or drugs, personal preference and for health reason. simple for me.
i didn’t know it was PB day, i shoulda had some! darn.
I pretty much never eat mac & cheese, i try and stay away from pasta for the most part. its not a regular stocked item in my cupboard! again, another personal preference hehe
Great post! I love how honest you are, a lot of bloggers would shy away from talking about this stuff, but it makes you seem so relatable! I used to do drugs recreationally. Like you, I didn’t have an addictive personality so drugs were always something I could take or leave. My ex-boyfriend however wasn’t as lucky and his addiction and the problems it caused are the reasons I stay away from drugs today. When you live with someone going through withdrawal symptoms it takes the “party” right out of the drug and makes it seem disgusting. As for alcohol, I think it’s fine as long as you’re safe, you know your limit, and you never drink and drive. On a lighter note, my favourite add-ins for mac & cheese are sauteed spinach and mushrooms and topped with hotsauce.
Your honesty is refreshing! There is something completely liberating about writing it all out even if you’ve had those thoughts for years. I feel like I have gotten to know myself so much better since I started writing. I’d say it’s emotional and mental detox. There is so much we can all learn from each other. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing! I went through the same thing. Grew up in a Christian home, dabbled in drugs and alcohol from my early teens to my early 20’s. I am thankful that I don’t have an addictive personality as well.
It is always a pleasure reading your blog!
I don’t think I’ve ever commented on your blog before, though I’ve been reading for awhile. But I super appreciated this post. I grew up in a super sheltered religious family believing that drugs and alcohol were the worst things ever…yet I went to public high school where they were cool. So I’ve always felt like I lived two different lives, behaving one way for one group and another way for another. I never was big on drugs (though my sister got hit hard there) but I did drink and still do sometimes. Yet it gives me extreme guilt, especially after all the trouble my sister got into and how hurt my mom was. It’s hard though. Why should I have to feel guilty when I want to live my own life and make my own choices? I go back and forth between quitting drinking and then drinking a ton. It’s not healthy. It’s something I’m super conflicted about. It was just nice to read about your story because I often feel so alone in my struggle. Most people think alcohol is just normal to consume. Not so in my family. And I hate having to hide myself from them.
Your honesty is amazing! I agree on that drugs are no bueno. I think alcohol is totally fine in moderation and as long as you do it for the right reason. I see people all the time that just talk about how wasted they got last night and I smile because I know I am SO past that stage in my life and that’s just awesome!
