it is cold outside these days. as in.. in the teens. and i am sure we will be seeing single digits overnight. once i get home from work, it is really hard to leave the house and go anywhere.. especially the gym. i have made myself brave the frigid temperatures the past two days. i made it to the gym both monday and tuesday and had some really stellar sessions.
today, however, i stayed in my warm house and let jackie kick my butt.
i picked this DVD up from costco for a mere $7.99 on sunday. to me, that is so cheap for a workout DVD. if you think about it, you will probably pay more than that to go to a specialty gym class. and this gym class was a private, one-on-one session in the comfort of my own home.
i thought about pulling a melissa and watching the DVD first to see what it was all about, but i had the feeling that if i watched it first, i probably would just decide to do it another day just because i wouldn’t want to watch it again. so, i bit the bullet and turned my living room into a workout room.
you see, we just got a new TV. i never showed it to you guys because there are still a few finishing touches to be made, but we recently had to mounted on the wall.
the TV is usually tilted toward the couch, which is in the corner of the room.
because of this handy wall mount device, i was able to easily reposition the TV to face an empty spot in the room, which i turned into my workout area.
don’t mind the cheese head on the mantle. it brings the packers good luck, didn’t you know?
it was nice to not even have to move the coffee table. this DVD doesn’t require as much room or jumping around as the insanity DVDs do, so i had plenty of room to complete the workout.
the only equipment needed was a pair of dumbbells. i have a set of 5 pounders.
the DVD is a 30 minute routine that incorporates both strength training and cardiovascular exercise.
there is a brief warmup that gets your body limber and your heart rate up, then jackie jumps right into the exercises. each exercise is done for one minute and each exercise engages more than one muscle group—usually an upper body part and a lower body part. for example, a curtsy lunge with a side kick while also punching one hand out to the side. another example is the squat tap with biceps curl. she focuses heavily on shoulder work. there is a brief cooldown session at the end.
i typically do weight lifting sessions for 45 minutes to an hour, but i honestly felt like i got a great workout in the 30 minutes. it went by quickly, but at the same time, it was tough. there were modification choices which is helpful to beginners and if you felt it was too easy, you could always up the size of your hand weights.
if you have been reading my blog for awhile, you know i am a huge fan of jackie warner. this was the first DVD of hers that i have actually purchased and tried, and i am REALLY glad i did. it is a great way to get a good workout in the comfort of your own home. plus, at eight bucks, you can’t go wrong.
after sucking down a muscle milk and taking a quick shower, i got to work on dinner. i totally failed at putting my crock pot to work this morning, so plans changed and we decided to have tacos (for him) and taco salad (for me)!
i usually prefer ground turkey for tacos, but marshall prefers ground beef so i have to give him his way everyone in awhile. while browning the meat, i used my handy little clip on spoon holder.
this gadget just clips right onto your pot or pan.
and securely holds your spoon when not in use.
my fabulous sister, marisa, gave me this for christmas. it is incredibly handy! thanks, ree, i love it ![]()
within about 15 minutes, dinner was ready. that’s what i love about taco night.. so speedy!
salad greens, black beans, a combo of cheeses, seasoned ground beef, diced tomatoes, homemade guacamole (thanks, marshall!) and a dollup of chobani.
my eyes were bigger than my stomach, because i couldn’t finish this hugh jass salad. i think the muscle milk filled me up a bit prior to eating dinner. i am sure i will be hungry again in a bit and will go back to finish the salad.
welp, i have a jazz game to watch and a couch spot with my name on it.. i don’t plan to venture out of the house the rest of the night. definitely staying in!
i will talk to you guys tomorrow—have a great thursday!
Qs~
1. do you do workout DVDs? which ones are your favorite? the only other workout DVDs i have enjoyed are the insanity DVDs. i tried a few jillian michaels ones and they were not my cup of tea.
2. what is your protein of choice for tacos? edited this to say FISH TACOS.

I can only do yoga at home and even that is not happening these days! I stick to turkey for tacos!
I love chicken tacos!
I only have a few workout dvds. I like P90X although I haven’t done it since my wedding.
I’m a fan of fish tacos.
love the cheesehead – Go Packers! :)
I like chickpea tacos, and I also use soy curls sometimes… YUM.
I have the Jillian Michaels Shred and NMTZ… I like those. I also have several from David Kirsch that are great too.
I agree Insanity was by far the best at home DVD series!!! I remember how hard it was just thinking about it. I still want to try some of the workouts again, but nervous LOL
~Lori
Fish tacos are my favorite ;)
I love taco bowls! I make mine just like yours pictured above! Like identical!
<3 Cheese. I totally want that cheese head! haha
Fish tacos for the win!
I have two of Jackie’s other DVD’s – One on One and Power Circuit. I love them both. They are both customizable so if you have time to do it all you can workout for an hour or you can just do 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 40 minutes. I also have four Jillian Michaels DVD’s and P90X. Lately I’ve done just cardio/running and skipped the weights. I need to get that balance back. Winter is tough to get motivated!
and now I’m hungry after looking at those tacos!
i’ve tried a couple workout dvds. my fiance and i have insanity and i got a couple yoga dvds for christmas. i like having them for days when there is bad weather or i just don’t have time to go to the gym, but usually i’m a gym girl. i definitely get a better workout at the gym (except the insanity dvds – they kick my butt every time).
handy little clip on spoon holder = omg that would save me sooo many paper towels, and sticky random messes all over my counters. i need that!!! where did you get it? hopefully BB & Beyond or a chain…
Fave taco filling? lots of tomatoes :)
Jackie W. I LOVE HER! I used to watch all her OLD shows but never got into her new stuff on bravo (too busy with life) but i loved her old show and wish they’d bring that back!
The clip is from Macy’s. It is from the Martha Stewart line.
I’m also a huge fan of Jackie Warner. I have two of her DVDs: circuit training and one on one training. No matter how many times I do them, I am sweating like crazy (and I don’t sweat easily) and always sore for a few days. I also really like the 10 minute solution pilates DVDs… which I should probably drag out and do tonight still!
I need one of those spoon holders! how handy!
Fisssshhhhh tacooooooos!! The best. And I like yoga DVDs!
WHERE did you get that clip on thingy? i love it, i want it haha
going anywhere in the cold is always hard, especially in Sask! its been around -13F this past week with lots of wind and snow, yowsas, thats why i go to the gym straight after work, then i dont get home and get warm and cozy
I got the clip for Janetha from Macy’s. It is the Martha Stewart line.
No Macy’s in Canada here, but I’ll search on amazon or something! thanks
I LOVE shrimp tacos, but sometimes I also make beef for the husband. I did start making my own taco seasoning, though, to reduce the sodium. It is so good! I use this Alton Brown recipe, and usually quadruple it so I always have some on hand:

DUDE! That clip is so neat :) I got all excited when I saw it haha. I have the insanity set (hurts the heck out of my knees) and Jillian Michaels 30-Day Shred (always get bored after the 1st week). I remember when Jackie had a show about her gym and I used to be obsessed with it!
The clip is from Macy’s… I am pretty sure it is the Martha Stewart line.
I always think I don’t like exercise videos, but whenever I do them, I LOVE them. Right now, I only own the 30 day shred and a crappy yoga DVD. I’m thinking I need to invest in some good ones. Have you done a post about your favorites?
I love black beans, cafe rio pork or rubio’s fish tacos. Homesick much?
GO JAZZ!
No workout for Randy?? I tried one of her dvd’s this summer and it kicked my arse. Like so hard I couldnt walk for the next few days but it was totally worth it. I will have to look into this one and see if Netflix has it since I rarely buy workout DVDs.
I have been diggin tempeh in tacos lately but like to mix it up with tofu and Morningstar Veggie Crumbles.
Fish Tacos RULE!!!!
I actually don’t mind doing laundry. Buuuuuuut, everything I own is simple. Wash, dry (well, some things shouldn’t be thrown in the dryer, but, um, I usually do anyway).
The folding is the worst part. Sometimes, uh, everything gets dumped on the bedroom floor until it gets worn again. Shhhhh.
<3 Her! I actually missed a workout this morning and did her workout on Exercise TV from On Demand. I was impressed. I usually have this stigma about working out on home, but i liked it alot!
I dont like Jillian either. I heard her say in an article that she doesn’t want children because of what it will do to her body. bleh.
Anyhow, I dont buy fitness dvds cause I get those free ones from my On Demand. I’ve tried a few Jackie Warner ones and indeed I too liked because of the “no need for fancy equipment”. I bought a few Crunch Pilates DVDs which were good and I didnt need ANY equipment and it made my abs feel like they were on fire.
I too like ground turkey with my tacos, but I love seafood tacos with shrimp!
Wahoo! The clip made the blog! I got it at Macy’s and should have bought one for myself as well. It came in red and aqua… and knowing you, I didn’t get red. I think it was from the Martha Stewart line. And fish tacos are my favorite. I am loving San Diego because I am trying all of the places to find the perfect fish taco. Maybe I’ll know by the time you come visit!
I actually did a workout DVD (okay, Exercise TV On Demand through Comcast- same thing) today. I did the 6 Week Six-Pack Jillian Michaels workout. It was INTENSE! I’m not sure if I liked it or not. I prefer the Shred, but I am looking for other trainers.
I should get one of those clips. That is awesome.
I love Jackie Warner. I have one of her DVDs. (The Blue one) and it seriously works you out like CRAZY! I always have insane delayed soreness afterwards.
I’ve never bought any workout dvd’s before, but I love Jackie Warner and you have got me sold on this one!
Favorite taco protein would definitely be FISH!
I saw that at Costco!! I may have to pick it up now. I love tae bo DVDs. And Kathy Smith’s lift weight to lose weight DVD for strength.
Chicken!! Not a fan of ground turkey tacos.
I really enjoy workout dvds! I really only like to gym for their classes!
I love me some fiiiish tacos! And bean/veggie tacos. YUMMM!
Your couch looks so comfortable! And the new tv looks great :D
I’m glad you reviewed that DVD. I almost bought it last month, but chose The Biggest Loser Boot Camp instead, which is a good one, too.
I will probably pick this up in the future!
I love that workout DVD. Jackie’s abs are so totally motivating. Totally. I kind of want to know what a day of eats looks like for her, don’t you?
yes! did you ever read her “this is why you’re fat” book? i imagine she eats similar to the way she preaches to eat in there. i need to re-read it, very motivating.
your abs are motivating. really!
i made so much vegan taco mince, i’ve enjoyed it three nights in a row. it’s love!
I didn’t realize she had a new dvd out. I’ll have to see if it’s on Netflix so I can try it. What are the cardio parts like? Is it similar to Jillian’s shred?
Not really.. while Jillian has specific minutes dedicated to cardio burst.. this is more of just compound moves that you do so many of that it makes you out of breath. I actually was breathing really heavy from it! I liked it a lot better than the Shred.. that could have to do with the fact that Jillian bugs me and I want to punch her in the face.. but really, Jackie’s moves seemed more effective. I am sore today and I never was with the Shred.
Al my workouts are done by workout dvds because i get too paranoid in the gym! and it’s way too expensive! I’m confused about this jackie one though, is it a cardio workout or just in place of weightlifting? i have alot of cardio/dance dvds but i don’t do much weightlifting as i find it boring!
This is body weight and hand weight strength training that it is at a pace fast enough to get your heart rate up. I would consider it in place of weights, not in place of cardio.
I have one of those clips. Had no idea what it was till now lol.
I did the Crucnh fitness burn and firm pilates video yesterday and now I can’t walk!!
I heard jackie is just as crazy as sean (insanity), just a shorted version. I’m all about that. Bring it Jackie, ha!
I love taco salads! Lean ground turkey, beef, chicken. As long as there is salsa, on it, I am good to go! ;)
I’ve tried some of Jillian’s videos, but honestly, she gets on my nerves. Even her books do. I tried reading Master Your Metabolism the other day, and I just got fed up with her practically saying that we are killing our bodies by eating artificial sweeteners and not eating organic. I don’t think a little bit of Splenda every now and then is going to hurt. And, not everyone can buy things organic. I know I try to buy as much as I can, but sometimes the pocketbook isn’t full enough.
I agree with you on Jillian. I don’t like her books. I recommend Jackie’s book called “This is why You’re Fat”–it reminds me a lot of BFL and it is a great read. I have reviewed it on here before.. you should check it out!
I’ve always wanted to try that DVD… I do P90x (not religiously) now but just to change things up once in a while. I did follow it last year though and it definitely is a gooood workout.
I only work out at home so I need variety! I also have some good yoga dvds, and a pilates..tape. haha ;) haven’t used that in a while. Its in the single digits here too so working out at home makes it so much easier!
I’m not a big DVD fan. I get so bored after 2x!
And shrimp for my tacos, please. :)
I love ground beef or ground chicken/turkey for tacos. I prefer ground beef. I love that spoon clip! That is so cool!
If you are a huge fan of Jackie, you should try her podcasts. Some of them are old, but they are free on itunes. I used to listen to them when I was working out. Enjoy
thanks for the tip! I will have to do that.
i actually like the moves in the jillian michaels videos, but she is so annoying. and i hate how she doesn’t do ANY of the moves, just explains them a million times next to the other people demonstrating. otherwise, i really like cathe friedrich or just doing my own thing! also, i adore ground chicken in my tacos…it’s really tender and juicy and super flavorful!
DANG i NEED MEXICAN!
Do you think this would be a good DVD to try for a beginner? With no coordination? I have the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred but have yet to try that… I guess now that it’s getting colder i will!
Jo,
I think that this video is more advanced than the 30 Day Shred. Maybe try that, see how you feel about it, and if it is too easy.. check this one out!
I love Jackie Warner..I have her dvd that came out before this one. I will have to try this one. =)
Love the wall mount. Dh and I still have to get one. it’s really tough working out to a dvd in the play room w/o one.
Great lil kitchen gadget!! i’ll need to get me one of those!!!
I love Jackie’s workouts and just Jackie in general. I much prefer her to Jillian.
Lately I’ve been on an OnDemand kick. I like the variety.
When it comes to workout DVDs, I’m partial to Jillian. I like her style and I always feel like I get a good workout. But I did buy one of Jackie’s DVDs recently. It’s called Personal Training With Jackie: Power Circuit Training. The 45 minute total body workout is really tough and I had great DOMs the day after. I defintely recommend it!
Oh, thank you! I will check that one out!
LOVE Jackie! I had several of her DVD;’s and they are perfect for when I just want a workout at home! Her book, “This is Why Your Fat” is awesome! It talks about horomone levels and is very interesting. Her eating plan is very similar to body for life.
HAHA.. I just said the same exact thing about her book up there on a comment reply. I agree 100%! I reviewed her book in great detail last year. I loved it.
