in meals

hey guys! i was MIA last night. we were out with kristen celebrating her birthday!!  how lucky is she that her birthday was on 1.11.11?! even cooler, she was born at 1:11!

IMG_5839

the big two-eight.  whew, that means in less than five short months, i will be right there with her in twenty-eightville.

to celebrate, we all got together for dinner at canella’s. it is on 500 south and 200 east in salt lake city.

IMG_5808

they put us in the basement next to the wine cellar. by ourselves, so it was like a private party. fabulous!

IMG_5837 IMG_5836

we ordered drinks and appetizers.

coffee for me.

IMG_5812

IMG_5809

the bruschetta, topped with pillows of goat cheese heaven.

IMG_5817

the caprese.

IMG_5818

for my entree, i ordered the spaghetti pomodoro with chicken.

it came with a side salad. i love their side salads because they aren’t wimpy. this was loaded with cheese, beets, garbanzo and kidney beans, cucumbers and pepperocinis.

IMG_5823

the spaghetti was whole wheat and the basil, garlic, parmesan and tomatoes were amazing.

IMG_5825 IMG_5829

marshall had to order tiramisu for dessert (it is his favorite!) he always orders it if it is on the menu wherever we are. i stole a few bites. naturally.

IMG_5830

happy birthday, kristen!

IMG_5824

we left the restaurant with full bellies and happy spirits. canella’s is awesome, if you live in the SLC or close to it.. i highly recommend the restaurant.

marshall and i went back to kristen’s house to give her a gift and sing happy birthday. she doesn’t like cake, but i bought a little one for her to put candles on and make a wish. it’s mandatory!!

IMG_5843

love you, kristen! here’s to a great year 28!

Qs~

1. do you what time you were born? i was born at 9:11 PM—during the big flood of 1983!! the rest of my family was evacuated from their house. they call me the flood baby.

2. is there a dessert that you HAVE to order if it is on the menu? marshall is a tiramisu connoisseur, but as for me.. i am just happy with ice cream. any kind will do, thanks.

paijery January 12, 2011 at 12:09 pm

That is the most beefed up side salad ever! YUM!
I was born at 10:12 am on the warmest day in january :)
Andrew aaalways has to order cheesecake if its on the menu. I’m not really a big dessert person. I would rather order another appetizer lol

Freckled Foodie January 12, 2011 at 12:09 pm

happy birthday, kristen!! xo.

Sarah January 12, 2011 at 12:16 pm

yum, your dinner looks delish! i’m a sucker for the caprese salads! i don’t usually order dessert, but i’m always tempted by the ones that combine caramel, apples, and ice cream!

Ashley @ 365 things January 12, 2011 at 12:16 pm

Yup, 5:14pm on a Wednesday in March. :D

I don’t usually order dessert, but my hus always orders napoleon’s anytime it’s on the menu….sometimes choc cake. Glad you guys had a fun time. I bet you made her feel extra special. :)

Heather January 12, 2011 at 12:18 pm

i was born at 4:13pm :) and i love ya girl…but i’m with marshall on this one. tiramisu is the best thing in the world, hands down!

Rose January 12, 2011 at 12:21 pm

I was born at 11:27am.

Flourless chocolate cake will always be ordered. Soooooooooooooo good.

Kelly January 12, 2011 at 12:23 pm

I was born early in the morning…all my parents remember was that is was in the six o’clock hour…must be why I am such a morning person!!

As for desserts…there isn’t really anything I feel like I HAVE to order but I always seemt o gravitate to the apple crisps which my husband hates. My husband will always order cheesecake..always. I actually hate cheesecake…it is a texture thing for me…so rarely do we ever order dessert because he wants cheesecake and I want apple crisp and we won’t order 2 desserts for the sheer fact that we will both finish them and then feel icky. haha!

Matt @ The Kitchen of a Runner January 12, 2011 at 12:25 pm

Looks like a great restaurant! If there is mac and cheese, I usually get it ;)

Maren January 12, 2011 at 12:26 pm

Wow all of that food looks amazing! Happy Birthday to Kristen!! I bet you loved that her bday was yesterday and she was born at 1:11, with your love of numbers!! :) My mom can’t remember if I was born at 5:30 or 8:30, thanks mom.

Jen January 12, 2011 at 12:31 pm

Looks like a great restaurant, love that salad!!

I was born at 7pm(ish) on 9.9.80

purplebirdblog January 12, 2011 at 12:32 pm

I was born at 10:25 p.m. I’m a night person, and I’ve always wondered if those two things correlate!

lindsay January 12, 2011 at 12:32 pm

what a great birthday. So intimate and fun! I was born at 12:15am in 1983 in the dead heat of the summer. I think thats why I don’t like the cold.
Dessert, I think i will just about anything but of course it has to be A LA MODE!

kerry January 12, 2011 at 12:34 pm

that looks like a great place!! :) the fodo looks so good! and that’s so cool about kristen’s birthday!

thedelicateplace January 12, 2011 at 12:39 pm

nothing wrong with the big 2-8 i am! i was born on halloween at 4:44am! my bros bday is today! he’s 24! that salad looks great, i’m obsessed with beets and/or anything pickled. nate lived in italy for 6mos and tiramisu is his fave as well. he gets it everywhere we travel!

Blog is the New Black January 12, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Flood baby! Love it! You just reminded me I will also be 28 this year. SICK!

Jessica Lee January 12, 2011 at 12:49 pm

I know not too many ppl love bread pudding but I DO so I WANT to order it but I dont always. Keeps the waist in check and the wallet in check :)

janetha January 12, 2011 at 1:21 pm

i LOVE bread pudding!

Katie January 12, 2011 at 12:55 pm

lol ! Flood baby, so cute! They call me tax baby, so I win! I was born on tax day, and yeah everyone dreads my birthday because of that : p

Your pasta looks yummy that you got and so does Marshalls tiramisu! I love tiramisu but have not had it in forever, and dessert when were going oit to eat, to be honest I hardly order dessert, im not a big dessert person, but some vanilla icecream with fresh berries is good, I got that last time we were out to eat!

Have a great day love!

Teri [a foodie stays fit] January 12, 2011 at 12:58 pm

mmmm…cannella’s. I only ever went there for lunch, but it was delicious.

I was born at 11:56 PM, 4 minutes before my brother’s birthday. It was always fun celebrating our birthday together even though he was 6 years older than me.

Tiramisu is usually a dessert I have to order actually! Love it!

janetha January 12, 2011 at 1:23 pm

my brother’s birthday is june 3 and mine is june 1! we always celebrate together :) he is 3 years older.

HappyMediumOfHealth January 12, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Wow that is a really nice side salad…very hard to find! I was born at 6:08 at night in Guam during super typhoon Andy. My mom calls me hurricane Hilary when I make messes :)

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) January 12, 2011 at 1:01 pm

I was born at 7:47am. I only know that b/c my mom always repeated it. Why? I dont know. I actually have to think really hard about what time skylar was born at. 11:05am. And then I checked out of the hospital a few hours later…I hate hospitals! haha!

Love the looks of the bday party celebrations…I would have had some tiramisu…or really any choc dessert. That’s my thing :)

Melissa @ Live, Love, & Run January 12, 2011 at 1:02 pm

Born at 9:09PM! Pretty close to you Janetha! I’m a 1982 baby…one and half years to 30. Woot!

julie January 12, 2011 at 1:13 pm

tiramasuuuuuu give me someeeee!!

what a fun way to celebrate a birthday! imagine how cool it’s going to be for her when she turns 111! :)

janetha January 12, 2011 at 1:21 pm

hahahahaaaaaaaaaahahahahaha

Bess January 12, 2011 at 1:37 pm

Looks like such a fun night with great food! I love all desserts, I can’t really discriminate. Maybe some tiramisu with ice cream and hot chocolate syrup on top. That sounds good :)

Katy January 12, 2011 at 1:55 pm

I was born at 11:56am… I think…. or 11:58… I can’t remember! Haha… I always forget! ;)

Allison @ Food For Healing January 12, 2011 at 1:58 pm

I don’t even know what time I was born at! i know the cement truck was just pulling up in the afternoon to pour the basement, when my mom went into labour! Great timing hey

As for dessert, i rarely order dessert at a restaurant because i’m always too full. But other i LOOOVE cheesecake. my bf is obsessed with brownies.

natalie (the sweets life) January 12, 2011 at 2:34 pm

ha I’m with you on the ice cream—definitely went out in freezing cold temperatures last night to get some. the guy at coldstone thought we were crazy :)

janetha January 12, 2011 at 3:05 pm

atta girl!!!

movesnmunchies January 12, 2011 at 2:39 pm

ahh i HAVE to order anything with chocolate.. its sad, but true!

Jamie @ Food in Real Life January 12, 2011 at 2:42 pm

I’m with you on the ice cream- but usually don’t order it at restaurants because you get a wimpy scoop for like $8. I actually think I might be one of the only people who orders the ice cream sundae at the cheesecake factory. Just not a big “cake” person..but i’ll eat any ice cream out there!

lowandbhold January 12, 2011 at 2:52 pm

I don’t know what time I was born but I think it was really late at night…

If I see carrot cake, I’m usually down to order that. Or red velvet. Most other things don’t set me off.

Today is a palindrome to! 1-12/-11!

Nicole C January 12, 2011 at 2:52 pm

I always get the time I was born and the time my brother was born at mixed up. SO I called my oracle, aka my mom and asked. She said I am 7:28AM and he is 7:32pm..damn 7’s mess me up. 12/8/81..maybe my lucky number should be 8.

I don’t often get dessert BUT if it’s at a mexican joint and they have fried ice cream that is a MUST. We have become fried ice cream connoisseurs. I like creme brulee too!

janetha January 12, 2011 at 3:05 pm

oh you should check out this recipe! http://chobani.com/blog/?p=1326

janae @hungryrunnergirl.com January 12, 2011 at 3:04 pm

HOW FUN!! I need to try that place…looks amazing and the spaghetti made me drool a little bit. You are gorgeous! I have to get lemon cake if it is on the dessert menu, I know weird ha! I was born at 10:18. That is crazy that her birthday was 1-1-11 and was born at 1:11. Love it!

Erica January 12, 2011 at 3:10 pm

What a cool spot! The decor is awesome. And those pillows of goat cheese? drooool. Your whole meal just looks scrumptious. I’m not a big traditional dessert person. I do like a good crisp! Especially mixed berry or peach. I was born early in the AM in September of 82

Lauren January 12, 2011 at 3:10 pm

LOVE celebrating b-days with friends. :) What a great night. Happy Birthday Kristen!!

inmytummy January 12, 2011 at 3:12 pm

I’m not a big dessert at restaurants person. If someone gets a dessert, I’ll probably have a bite or two, but I don’t usually order my own.

I was born at 5:50 pm.

Christine (The Raw Project) January 12, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Wow, the restaurant looks fabulous. What a fun evening.

1. Nope :-)
2. Not really, hard to find a good vegan dessert in a lot of places still. But I adore a raw chocolate cake.

Jocelyn @ Peace.Love.Nutrition January 12, 2011 at 3:54 pm

I have absolutely not idea what time I was born! lol That’s so cool though about your friend though!

You bet I made a wish at 11:11 on 1/11…looking forward to 11:11 on 11/11/11 haha! I’m really cool I swear :)

Meg January 12, 2011 at 4:06 pm

I absolutely LOVE birthdays. I don’t know exactly why, maybe I just like to feel special (on mine) and make others feel special (on theirs). That’s really sweet you bought your friend a little cake, it’s so cute! I was born in Wyoming in the air force base hospital in the middle of a snowstorm at 7 am. I was the only baby in the hospital so my parents always tease me that there’s no possibility I was swapped at birth!

Katie January 12, 2011 at 4:20 pm

Yay, Happy Birthday, Kristen! Looks like a fun celebration!

I have no idea what time I was born – I’ll have to ask my mama if she remembers next time I talk to her. However, I do know my mom went into labor while she was Christmas shopping, I think that’s hilarious.

I order chocolate cake if it’s on the menu. Yes, I want cake! :-)

Kristin (Cook, Bake, Nibble) January 12, 2011 at 4:41 pm

What a great birthday- and so cool about the time/date! I was born at 3:18 a.m. in the middle of July. I was 2 weeks late and still a teeny tiny baby! My sister, on the other hand was 2 weeks early and 2 whole pounds more than me :P

As for desserts… N and I LOVE tiramisu and will usually order it and split, but I’m also with you- I can’t pass up ice cream!

xo

Pure2raw twins January 12, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Looked like a fun time!! Happy birthday Kristen!!

um, is it bad I do not know what time I was born??? haha and Lori is not around to ask

and for dessert that is really tough for me, I guess something chocolate, but mint chocolate would be even better!!

fittingbackin January 12, 2011 at 5:20 pm

I have no idea what time I was born and rarely order dessert. However, I would have ordered a caprese in a heart beat!

Dana @ my little celebration January 12, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Lemon cake is my must-order. Especially if it has loads of super sweet lemon frosting. So good!

Jess January 12, 2011 at 6:20 pm

So cool that she was born at 1:11! I was born at 11:06:)

BroccoliHut January 12, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Is it weird that I don’t really know what time of day I was born? I was the youngest child, so I think my parents kind of gave up on documenting things like that.
As for desserts, I am always tempted by creative flavors of sorbet–my favorites thus far have been coconut and pomegranate.

a taste of health with balance January 12, 2011 at 6:37 pm

I was born 11/1 so this year will be sweeet! Time was 10:36AM! Any chocolatey goodness is usually what I get :)

Laura (starloz) January 12, 2011 at 6:40 pm

i love that you insist on a cake & candles, i’m a huge birthday person

Meg January 12, 2011 at 7:34 pm

Daaang what a lucky birthday and delicious birthday! I love anything lemony!

kissmybroccoli January 12, 2011 at 9:01 pm

Great salad! Look at the size of that beet!

I know I was born around 7am…I think 7:15ish. My mom usually calls me at the exact time I was born to wish me a happy birthday, but this year she called the night before to tell me, “At this exact time, 26 years ago, I was starting my labor with you!” haha!

I’m not really a restaurant dessert person…unless it involves pumpkin! Bread pudding or cheesecake? Yes, please!

Di January 13, 2011 at 5:51 am

That’s an AMAZING side salad! Wow. I’m impressed! I love tiramisu. So delicious.

I was born at 1:47am on (I believe) a Friday morning. My Dad was supposed to go to a Bruins game with one of his friends and my grandfather (they split season tickets back then) but ended up going to the hospital with Mom instead. Aww. ♥

I don’t *have* to order something if it’s on the menu…but I always have a serious internal debate about ordering any sort of oreo or peanut butter type dessert if it’s there.

Kim @ Imperfectly Perfect January 13, 2011 at 2:14 pm

Wow, pretty cool that Kristen was born at 1:11 on top of it all! Happy Birthday to her!! I was born at 5:09 am. My mom calls/texts me every birthday at that time. It’s our “thing”.

All of your meals look delish! I don’t normally get dessert when out. Sometimes I’ll pick at whatever my boyfriend orders or take a bite of a dessert that the table ordered. I ALWAYS get coffee though.
