not quite like philly.

in meals

today was soooo productive! i am pretty dang proud of myself—the two spare rooms are all the way unpacked. finally. after living here for five months… what?

as soon as we get the rooms furnished and decorated, i will show you what we’ve done with the place. i still owe you before and after renovation photos for the bathrooms and living room.. don’t worry, i haven’t forgotten. they just aren’t quite ready yet.

as you football fans may know, the packers played today. it was sure apparent around this house.

IMG_5289

to the left of randy’s rump: a packers beanie.

to the right of penny’s rump: a packers hoodie.

on marshall’s bottom half: packers sweats.

on marshall’s head: a big ol’ piece of packers cheese.

what the crap is a packer, anyway?

marshall gets very into green bay games. i mean, just look at his game face!

IMG_5293

what’s even better is his victory face.. right when they won which shoved them into the playoffs, or so i am told.

IMG_5294

that shot made it for my photo of the day over on things i see Smile

after the game, we headed to philadelphia to my parents’ house for philly cheesesteak sandwiches.

steak~

IMG_5299

shrooms~

IMG_5301

peppers & onions~

IMG_5302

cheese~

IMG_5305

my brother was the grill master!

IMG_5303

he grilled up some chicken for me and my sister in law so we could make chicken phillies.

IMG_5308

and momma b was his sidekick on the assembly line. IMG_5314

they make a couple of great short order cooks!

IMG_5313

i know that your typical phillies use cheese whiz or american cheese (and i only know  that from watching throwdown with bobby flay, so i could be wrong), but there is a spot in SLC called joni’s deli with the BEST cheesesteak sandwiches and this is how they do them.

IMG_5317

i piled mine with peppers, onions, mushrooms, chicken and provolone. there was also mayo hiding under there.  now, i am not claiming to know authenticity when it comes to cheesesteak sandwiches, but these were dang good.

IMG_5318

sides were a big green salad and delicious roasted red potatoes.

IMG_5322

not quite philly, but i’ll take it!

IMG_5321

great dinner. thanks, mom!

no family dinner would be complete without a couple shots of these two handsome fellas—my two new nephews, greyson and ben.

IMG_5312IMG_5327

they didn’t have phillies. they don’t have teeth.

we came home and watched shutter island. yikes. crazy flick! i really liked it.. it almost makes me want to read the book. almost. i will have to add it to the ever growing list of books i want to read but never make time for. Smile

guess what? i don’t have to go back to work tomorrow! because i worked on new years eve, i have tomorrow off. i plan to hit the slopes.. cannot WAIT.

be back tomorrow night—enjoy your mondays!

Qs~

1. have you ever been to philadelphia and had a real philly? one day i will get there!

2. are you a football fan? i am, by no means, a football fan.

Never been to Philly
and I am HUGE HUGE DENVER Bronco’s fan! Go Tebow who has reinvented our Bronco year in the last 2 weeks!
Btway tell the hubby we lived in Madison and Evansville, Wisconsin from May til November of this year when we were doing JOBS there…thankful that Tom obtained a new job back in Colorado where our home never sold anyway!! Life is good and the folks in WI are so, so friendly!

purplebirdblog January 2, 2011 at 11:53 pm

OMG, that victory photo of Marshall made me literally laugh out loud. Is he wearing the gigantic Packers pants?? And a big hell to the yeah on Shutter Island. Great flick.

janetha January 2, 2011 at 11:59 pm

haha yes, he is.. we tried to shrink them but they are still HUGE! i laugh so hard when he wears them!

Erica D January 2, 2011 at 11:55 pm

Since I play rugby, I have the nagging feeling that I should have at SOME enthusiasm for football.

….nah. bunch of helmet-wearing wimps :)

But I do think the Packers’ colors are the prettiest!

Stefanie January 3, 2011 at 12:11 am

I always make “philly cheesesteaks” for my guy–I have no idea if they’re anything like a real philly, but I still call them that! haha oh well!

Guys game faces are soo FUNNY! I’m totally not a football fan–but it’s BEARS all the way for the men in my life! :)

Erin January 2, 2011 at 11:20 pm

I have had a Philly in Philly. I lived outside the city for about 6 years. You all got pretty close to it. There are two prodomentant Cheesesteaks. One made with cheese wiz and diced onions and the other is made with Provolone and Diced onions. Most don’t have green peppers instead they used sweet pepper relish…

Ok ok enough with the sandwhich lesson lol

LOVE your blog!

kristastes January 2, 2011 at 11:52 pm

Prov rocks, and I was born and raised in Philly :) I have a cheesesteak about once a year…crazy, I know!

Jess January 3, 2011 at 1:11 am

I’ve had a philly once! this past summer:)

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) January 3, 2011 at 3:47 am

omg scott is the biggest!!! bears fan! And they played the packers. Marshall no doubt was happier than scott was today.

I posted a few mos ago and also today asking the SAME question to my readers and my answer is the same as yours…do i like football? no!
it’s not that i dont like it..it’s that i have no interest/care/desire. But let them watch their football..it’s their thing, ya know :)

Jessica @ How Sweet January 3, 2011 at 4:34 am

I have! They are so good… insanely good.

Lauren January 3, 2011 at 4:44 am

Mmm, those philly sandwiches look fantastic!!!! I’m not a fan of the whiz either. Actually, I think I would prefer some goat or feta on my sandwich. ;)

Have a great Monday love!

Liz @ Blog is the New Black January 3, 2011 at 4:45 am

Lots of things to comment on here… your mom is a MILF… those phillies look WONDERFUL and I’d kill a bitch for a steak and cheese right now… yes, at 6:45 AM. How cute are your nephews?! And “they don’t have teeth” comment made me LOL. Never been to Philly and had a real Philly! Adding that to my life’s “to do” list…

lindsay January 3, 2011 at 4:56 am

hehe, I love the marshall victory shot! We have a place called Texadelphia in Austin that serves up so pretty mean phillys cheesesteaks. Nice and greasy too! Lets just say I bring my Maalox every time we go, but worth it! haha. Happy MONDAY OFF!

andrea January 3, 2011 at 4:56 am

I’ve been to Philly for cheesesteaks and they are really good! I love football, I am a huge NY Giants fan and go to most of the games. I used to be oblivious to sports until I got married to a dedicated football fan and now I love it!

Katie January 3, 2011 at 5:10 am

I was thinking of Marshall yesterday when the Packers won! lol! I knew he was in his glory!

Been to Philly a couple times but never had their cheesesteaks!

Have fun snowboarding today!!! : ) xoxo

April January 3, 2011 at 5:13 am

Marshall should wear the cheesehead and smile more. He’s got a cute smile!

Not a football fan either although I do support the Colts.

I’ve not been to Philly although one of my bff’s lives there.

Heather January 3, 2011 at 5:22 am

I’ve never been to Philly, nor am I a football fan (but I do support my hometown!).
And those babies are ridiculously cute……..omg!

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine January 3, 2011 at 5:39 am

I’m in Philly right now….or half an hour outside of it. COME VISIT!! I haven’t had a cheesesteak since I was a kid, but my brother is obsessed with them. And if you ever come, you have to go to Pat’s, NOT Genos!!

Matt @ The Kitchen of a Runner January 3, 2011 at 5:42 am

I NEED a Philly Cheesesteak ;)

Erica January 3, 2011 at 6:02 am

haha- love the cheese head :) What a great dinner. There is nothing like cook onions & peppers- SO good! Have fun on the slopes and enjoy your (well earned) day off.

1. have you ever been to philadelphia and had a real philly? I’ve definitely been to Philly (that is where Josh is from) but I haven’t had the sandwich

2. are you a football fan? Heck yes I am!

Salah January 3, 2011 at 6:04 am

I have honestly never had a philly cheesesteak. I guess the problem is that I just don’t really like red meat, but the chicken version looks awesome!

Thats so funny how into the packers your hubby is :-) My boyfriend LOVES the Packers, they are his fav and yesterday he looked very similar to your husband! haha

MelissaNibbles January 3, 2011 at 6:33 am

I’m not a Packers fun, but I need that hat. I’ll take one of the sandwiches too.

thedelicateplace January 3, 2011 at 6:39 am

1. don’t live too far from philly, and even though your cheese is not the traditional style, i’d say yours looks just as tasty if not better!
2. omg i hate football. with a passion. i’ll take ice hockey anyday (holla winter classic penguins, sad they lost!)

Katie January 3, 2011 at 6:59 am

Those pictures of Marshall are too cute! I love them!

Also, weird…I watched Shutter Island this weekend too and really liked it! From the previews, I thought I would be terrified, but I ended up just really enjoying it! Have fun on your day off today!

withasideofhope January 3, 2011 at 7:19 am

I actually live in the suburbs of Philly so I have definitely had a Philly cheesesteak! I am not a huge fan of wiz so I typically don’t get one with it on there.

I don’t really like football at all. My boyfriend is a huge sports fan so sports are always on tv in our house. I’d rather watch baseball over football anyday. :)

lowandbhold January 3, 2011 at 7:23 am

I’ve never been to Philly or had a real cheesesteak, but I too will get there someday. We do have a pretty amazing cheesesteak place here though.

LOVE football. Although, I’m a Bears fan so can’t really celebrate with Marshall on that one. My main love is college football though.

Have fun on the slopes today!

erin January 3, 2011 at 7:25 am

I have had a philly cheesesteak…the best is when the grease runs down your..lol..my fav are chicken cheese steaks with provolone!! Yum..great…now I am hungry:)

Loved Shutter Island..have you seen Inception? Awesome movie..not scary like shutter island but def a a psychological twister

Sarah January 3, 2011 at 7:26 am

A. I’ve been to Philly a lot… I hate Philly. I’m from Pittsburgh. The best thing about Philly, is having two Cheesesteak places literally across from eachother. They are so good. I have no allegience to either, but I believe Geno’s is better.

B. I’m from Pittsburgh, of course I’m a huge football fan. Love them Stillers!

Di January 3, 2011 at 8:11 am

I love Marshall’s enthusiasm! It’s fantastic! (I wish he were a Patriots fan, I’d love it even more! hehe)

Those look like delicious cheesesteaks. I’ve been to Philly three times and have had cheesesteaks. The first time I got one with Whiz…it was amazing. I’m partial to Cheez Whiz and all of its chemically goodness though. You have to go to Philly. I’ll meet you there! ;)

I love football. I know we’ve kinda talked a little about this via posts…it’s just such a great game (in my own personal opinion and I fault no one for disliking it).

Have fun on the slopes!

Sami January 3, 2011 at 8:24 am

haha! i’m diggin’ the cheese hat! :)

once, i had a REAL philly cheesesteak with my bestie IN philly. it was epic.

xo.

Nicole C. January 3, 2011 at 8:44 am

I am so glad you noted the Whiz, you would’ve been verbally bashed if not, it’s a serious deal. On that note, I have been to Philly. My man is PA guy so there are some things they take serious, cheese whiz being one of them.

I am not a super fan but I don’t mind watching football, I’d like to go to a Steelers game. Although Ben is a PA guy, he is a west side Steelers fan. He resembles some of the players too, I’m sure it’s his beard, or height too..

Katy January 3, 2011 at 8:50 am

1) I have never been to Philly, but I really want to!

2) I am a HUGE football fan…. eh, what can I say, I grew up in a college football town. ;) And now I live in a city with an NFL team (the Jags).

Jessy (squeezetheday) January 3, 2011 at 9:02 am

OMG, those photos of Marshall, especially the cheese on his head, lol!!

Heather (Where's the Beach) January 3, 2011 at 9:06 am

Too funny on the pics. I have been to Philly but my Philly Cheese “Steak” was a veggie version. I am not a football fan really. I get a little too competitive so I just don’t even watch ;-)

momma b January 3, 2011 at 9:19 am

Marshall and the pups, love em oh boy and Go Packers!! The dinner was SO good and I loved how Luke ate so many of those “french fries” too funny!!

Nope, never been to the city with the cracked bell and awesome sandwiches but would love to someday.

Football, only if it is tied and about to end then I like to watch it (don’t understand much of it though) :)

xoxo

Kate January 3, 2011 at 9:20 am

The cheese hat is hilarious.

momma b January 3, 2011 at 9:20 am

P.S. Can’t miss saying just how cute and handsome those two grand babies are!! xoxo

carly January 3, 2011 at 9:21 am

1. i grew up in philly and have had many cheesesteaks! yours look great. i used to eat the steak ones growing up, then the chicken ones in college, but now that i’m mostly vegan i get this vegan cheesesteak from a place called govinda’s whenever i’m back home. i’ve never been a fan of the whiz either, i always preferred provolone.

2. not a football fan AT ALL. whenever i go to watch a game with friends i just watch the expressions of my friends because i find that more entertaining.

christina January 3, 2011 at 9:40 am

hahah NICE cheese head!

Allison @ Food For Healing January 3, 2011 at 9:56 am

the answer to both your questions is a big fat No LOL i watched some Canadian Football this year since Saskatchewan was playing in the finals, but thats about it

Haleigh January 3, 2011 at 10:19 am

Haha, love Marshall’s victory face :) I’ve actually never tried Philly Cheesesteak. Sad, I know.

Alison January 3, 2011 at 10:58 am

To answer your question, “Packers” is a reference to meat packers. When the team was founded, Earl Lambeau solicited funds for uniforms from his employer, the Indian Packing Company. He was given $500 for uniforms and equipment, on the condition that the team be named for its sponsor. The Indian Packing Company packed canned meat.

PETA wanted the team to change their name a few years ago. I think that’s silly but whatever.

I love the Cheeseheads. Marshall looks so cute in his!

cbrady3 January 3, 2011 at 11:00 am

My brother went to school in Philly and the big debate was Gino’s or Pat’s. We were all for Pat’s! Got one with the cheese whiz and all…delish!

And I’m a football fan (RAMS) but much more into college football. Go irish!

Lo January 3, 2011 at 11:22 am

omg omg J! I am totally joining that 365 photo revolution! it is the perfect way to build/grow/learn more about my new passion, photography….love love that idea for chicken phillies and if your CUTE and ADORABEL nephews need a nanny, i come highly recommended!

xoxo
lolo

Steph January 3, 2011 at 11:31 am

Enjoy your day off Lady! BTW, this morning while whipping up a post, I didn’t realize it – but you may appreciate some of my beer mugs… Packers AND Squatters. Boyfriend loves the Packers because of the small town heart and ownership behind the team (I think his disgust for Jerry Jones may amplify those feelings) but the cheese-head is priceless.

For the record, the Squatters glass is my favorite. SLC is such a great town and had no idea there were so many microbreweries…

rachel January 3, 2011 at 11:39 am

tell marshall i will send him an official philly cheezsteak.. whiz & all if packers can keep up with us eggles this weekend!! desean jackson & vick are ready for the cheese heads!!!

Annie January 3, 2011 at 11:50 am

I hope you have an awesome day on the slopes! I got out yesterday and enjoyed a day of skiing. Those cheesesteaks looks awesome.

emily (a nutritionist eats) January 3, 2011 at 12:19 pm

I skipped the Packer game for yoga yesterday, but I assume the expressions (and I know the clothing) looked very similar!!
And your family Sunday dinners really make me wish I lived closer to home!! They look so fun!

Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) January 3, 2011 at 2:14 pm

I watched Shutter Island with Brian (who read the book) and he said it was exactly the same. Don’t let that stop you from reading it… just sayin’ ;P

Your chicken philly looks yuuuuuuummy! I’ve never been to Philly and had a ‘real’ one, but I’ve had one from Philly’s Best near my place and loved every cheese filled bite!

Not a football fan… and my husband isn’t either, which works out well ;)

Sara January 3, 2011 at 2:18 pm

As a Bears fan, I have to say this post was very disappointing. VERY. *Gives you a disappointing look* ;)
