business as usual.

in meals,moves

while it seems like 83% of the people i know are off work this week, i am not. i work all week, folks.

and by all week.. i mean ALL week. as in, while 99.548625% of the world is off work on friday, new years eve, i will be at my office. plugging away.

while my friends and family were sleeping in, brewing coffee to enjoy at home or pondering what to do with their day off, i was eating breakfast at my desk.

IMG_4819

chobani plain + nature’s path ancient grains granola. and coffee.

IMG_4824IMG_4825

while my friends and family were out shopping, seeing movies or snuggling up on the couch, i was eating lunch at my desk.

IMG_4827

turkey + stuffing sandwich on wheat with mustard + apple cranberry butter. and two clementines. and water.

IMG_4834IMG_4836

saying i have eaten 40 of these in the past 6 days would be a modest statement. i <3 clementines.

guess what? a blizzard swept the valley promptly 20 minutes before i left my office.  we are talking LOTS of snow. finally! i couldn’t be happier because i love snow.

but that did mean one thing..

while my friends and family had completed their workout earlier in the day because they didn’t have to work, i  drove to the gym in the blizzard and trounced through the snow into the gym to get some cardio in.

IMG_4856

20 minutes (2.3 miles) on the treadmill, 10 minutes (1.1 miles) on the stairmill, stretching before and after.

while my friends and family had hours of free time to think of what to cook for dinner, get the groceries and prepare the meal,  i had to brave the crappy roads and go to the store to get groceries for dinner.

IMG_4859

don’t worry, i was at a stop sign!

IMG_4842

on the upside… marshall cooked. dinner for us Smile

IMG_4870IMG_4867

he cooked his specialty.. spaghetti.

IMG_4874

although i had to cook my own mushrooms.. he won’t have anything to do with them!

IMG_4875

whole wheat noodles + spaghetti squash + ground beef marinara (from scratch). and mushrooms. and asparagus.

IMG_4879IMG_4877IMG_4878

i love bulking spaghetti up with squash! it tastes so good and has a great texture.

while my friends and family were staying out late or up late because they don’t have to work tomorrow, i am going to stay in, eat gingerbread men and call it a night.

IMG_4897

three trader joe’s gingerbread men from kaitlin.

IMG_4893

kaitlin is so sweet and sent these to me! not gonna lie, the only reason i wanted them was because of the houndstooth packaging.

IMG_4894

they are delicious little fellows, though.

speaking of people who weren’t at work today.. i saw this post of jessica’s. she doesn’t go to work any day, so i guess i can’t be jealous that she has this week off. i am going to pretend like i can stay in my sweats all day and fill out surveys. even though the only thing i will be filling out tomorrow are invoices and sales receipts.

here goes!

1. Four TV shows that I watch:

  • dexter
  • the family feud
  • weeds
  • dogs 101

2. Four things that I’m passionate about:

  • food and cooking
  • all animals, mainly dogs
  • every one of my relationships
  • learning new things every day

3. Four words/phrases I use a lot:

  • “bear”<—i call marshall this at least 63 times a day
  • “i know, right?”
  • “i don’t remember that.” <—i have the memory of a goldfish.
  • "sure.”<—except i pronounce it “shore”

4. Four things I’ve learned from the past:

  • you have to go through a lot of bad apples to find a good seed
  • i am happiest when i am healthiest
  • some friends may come and go but your family is always there
  • don’t be afraid to ask for something if you know you deserve it

5. Four places I would like to go:

  • greece
  • to bed
  • back to london
  • south america

6. Four things I did yesterday:

  • blogged
  • ate pumpkin pie with fresh vanilla bean whipped cream
  • worked
  • laughed SO hard

7. Four things I am looking forward to:

  • mexico
  • two of my best friends getting married (not to each other)
  • seeing my sister’s new sunny san diego home
  • my house renovations, furnishing and decorating to be complete

8. Four things I love about winter:

  • snowboarding
  • holidays
  • hoodies + beanies
  • snow, snow, snow everywhere

that was fun.

i want to say thanks so much for all the lovely comments on my last post. while i was by no means miserable when i was more die hard about diet and exercise, i do think doing that now would make me miserable. i wanted to make that clear because i think i led a lot of you to believe i was not happy back then when i was really into my old routine. not the case! sometimes being dedicated to a strict diet & exercise challenge can be fun! as long as it is for the right reasons. but right now, it is not for me.  i am in a different place in my life right now. also, you are all so inspiring! i loved hearing what you see when you look in the mirror. if you need a pick me up, go check out the comments.

i will be back tomorrow.. after work, of course. if you have the week off.. enjoy it!

Qs~

1. what are you looking forward to?

2. where is one place you would like to go?

I can’t believe you don’t have Friday off. Isn’t it the Federal holiday since New Years Day is on Saturday? I have it off, but not any other day this week and we probably won’t get to leave early tomorrow. Bleh.

runyogarepeat December 29, 2010 at 10:17 pm

Snowboarding & snow is definitely the best of winter. I’m looking forward to my snowboarding trip coming up, and I would love to go to Greece. I love traveling blogs just for the pictures of all the beautiful places.

purplebirdblog December 29, 2010 at 10:21 pm

I too have been working all week. And will be working on Friday, probably right up until the point that I leave for my NYE shindig. I am looking forward to finding a new job. My boss is screwing me royally because he’s mad that I’m in school, and I can’t take it anymore. I am actively seeking employment at the moment at a job that can get me through these next 10 months of school, one in which I actually have days off and free time (which will be study time, but I need that shiz too!). I would like to go to Minneapolis. Hip hip and art culture like whoa up there.

Cathie December 29, 2010 at 10:25 pm

I have to work this week too and I am not happy about it!!
Everybody is off!!

Carbzilla December 29, 2010 at 10:26 pm

If it makes you feel any better, IF I still had my old job I would be at work every day this week. Chris actually has next Monday off. Random. He took Friday off (or he would lose it) so we might go snowshoeing. We might go razorclamming on Saturday. We’re so up in the air these days, who knows what we’ll end up doing.

Fun to see Jessica’s site. I’m checking it out next!

Rose December 29, 2010 at 10:31 pm

I am looking forward to NYE. I’m cooking a gourmet meal with four of my favorite people ever, getting drunk, and playing Mario Kart. Heaven.

One place I would love to visit? The Florida Keys. They look so pretty and warm in all the pictures.

Hallie December 29, 2010 at 10:35 pm

hold the phone….when are you coming to San Diego?

oh and I want to go to Hawaii (and I AM in July) and New Orleans and Seattle and Santorini (Greece). Pretty much anywhere, I love to travel!

edenseats December 30, 2010 at 12:44 am

O janetha, I feel you pain. I have to work this week too….
anyhow, I’m a shroom girl too but almost everyone I know hates them so I’m used to cooking some just for me!
Your “yesterday” sounds not too shabby! I don’t know if I’m looking forward to anything right now…maybe if we have the giant blogger vacation though.
I’d love to go to Japan and Australia (again). I hear the slopes in australia are awesome!
And I love the way you say “sure”, I wish I could say it that way naturally.

actorsdiet December 30, 2010 at 1:11 am

i love that houndstooth packaging as well, though i’m curious about the gingerbrea men as well. i’d love to go to japan (never been) and paris (went in high school but never w/ abe)

Mimi December 30, 2010 at 1:23 am

You poor dear! Sorry you’ll be plugging away.

And yes, yes, yes to spaghetti squash! I love it!

I’m actually studying abroad in London next semester! Any cold weather tips for a life-long hotblood? Would you recommend merino wool?

janetha @ meals & moves December 30, 2010 at 10:28 am

oh i am SO jealous of you! i studied in london in 2001 (wow, i am old)–you are going to LOVE it! i am not a wool-wearer because it makes me itch.. i am all about the puffy down jackets ;) have fun!

Lauren December 30, 2010 at 5:48 am

I’m working this week too and it blows! But it’s almost over thankfully. I go to Gold’s Gym too!!! I wonder if my traveling pass will get me in to SLC Gold’s gym? LoL.

I love your 4 things lists. I want to go to Greece as well. Thanks for sharing hun.

Matt @ The Kitchen of a Runner December 30, 2010 at 6:17 am

I am working this week too :( I even work at 6 AM on New Years Day!

Right now, I am looking forward to being done with school. I can’t wait to graduate in May!

lindsay December 30, 2010 at 6:19 am

Marshall (bear), you did good tonight. Nice pasta dish! I bet it was delicious! And family fued is still on? Is that guys from HOME IMPROVEMENT still the host? awesome!
LC

janetha @ meals & moves December 30, 2010 at 10:29 am

haha good old al.. no, now the host is J pederman from seinfeld (i dont know his real name!) but my FAVORITE episodes are the old school ones with richard dawson! he was a pimp!

Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun December 30, 2010 at 6:30 am

Marshall is like Peter. He won’t have anything to do with my mushrooms either. What’s wrong with them? Mushrooms are fantastic!

Abby December 30, 2010 at 6:55 am

I’m working too, but just think… you will be in sunny Mexico pretty soon while everyone else is stuck working! I hate you a little ;)

The second I saw the mushrooms I was about to commend Marshall for including the fungus among us that he so despises, but then I read your added them in. I guess you pick your battles, and if dude made me a dinner like that, I would happily make my own mushrooms.

I love that you laughed SO hard. I would like to do that today.

Erika December 30, 2010 at 6:55 am

Sorry to hear that you have to go to work this week. On the bright side, dinner looked especially delicious today!

Julie December 30, 2010 at 6:58 am

I say “I know, right?” all the time too. Sometimes I shorten it to just “right??” but I really say it too much.

All you have to do is suffer through this week of work, and a few more, then you are on a sunny vacation! And while you’re laying on the beach sipping a fruity alcoholy beverage everyone else will be at work :)

I’m looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow, and I’d love to go on an African safari.

Freckled Foodie December 30, 2010 at 7:16 am

i’m sorry you have to be at work this ENTIRE week. i work this week too, but only until today :/ hope you still manage to enjoy your new years!

xo.

Pure2raw twins December 30, 2010 at 7:24 am

Yay for snow! I wish I was more comfortable in snow, I do love it, but being from FL I do get scared of it sometimes.

I am looking forward to getting back into a routine. I have been home in FL for the holidays, but now back in NC. Back to work. Back to reality. But I am actually really excited to get back into a routine.

Jennifer December 30, 2010 at 7:34 am

I love love love Dexter. So said the season is over.
I was having little Dexter parties every Sunday night. I miss them.

Shannon December 30, 2010 at 7:38 am

I work too, but I actually like it. I like working when a lot of other people aren’t.. the commute is nicer, and the phone is quieter! I get a lot more done!

elise December 30, 2010 at 7:51 am

awwww…i ALMOST feel sorry for you…haha. i am working this whole week AND i worked christmas eve and christmas day…and to make it even more of an insult, kyle has been off of school for the past 2 weeks. so hes at home playing wii while im wiping asses. sweet. all whining aside though, i dont really mind. i like my job and the weather is too gross to do anything anyways. almost 2011 though!

janetha @ meals & moves December 30, 2010 at 10:30 am

Erin P. December 30, 2010 at 8:15 am

My husband and I are both working Friday too. We work at a hospital. We get next Monday off though since New Year’s Day falls on a Saturday they give the following Monday off. Weird. Why not just give New Year’s Eve!?!?

carly71722 December 30, 2010 at 8:20 am

Plus it’s time and a half :) I just can’t wait to see what this year brings. There is a lot of potential working, I hope it pans out well! Happy New Year!

OMG that spaghetti squash looks and sounds so amazing!!!!

Jenny December 30, 2010 at 9:28 am

ugh, I’m sorry J-bear!! think of it this way – when everyone else is paying off their credit card debt from buying Christmas presents this year, you’ll be raking in those dolla dolla bills at work!

p.s. I did NOT know you watched Dexter! dude – we have to chatski. Did you see the finale?

Heather December 30, 2010 at 9:37 am

i had to take off work this week for vacation…we didn’t just get the week off…but i’m so glad i did! also, i love the mixture of whole wheat pasta and spaghetti squash! yummy :)

Meri @ merigoesround December 30, 2010 at 9:38 am

Houndstooth! That’s what it is! I was looking at this black and white jacket yesterday, trying to describe it and not able to come up with the right word for the pattern… I also apparently have the memory of a goldfish. Unfortunately, once I can’t think of a word it also drives me crazy up until I remember… So now, i can finally be at peace.
Thank you.
I will be at work (and none of my coworkers will be ugh) through friday afternoon if that helps. But it probably doesn’t :)

lowandbhold December 30, 2010 at 9:54 am

I have tomorrow off (sorry) but I’ve been here most of the week and I feel ya. A whole week off would have been NICE.

I’m LOVING my Ancient Grains granola. Just finished up some with a bit of Fage in fact. It was delicious.

Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather December 30, 2010 at 10:20 am

Crazy you have to work all week?! I thought it was bad that I only have friday off, but I guess i’m lucky!

I can’t wait to head up to my parents lake house tonight for another Christmas celebration.

MelissaNibbles December 30, 2010 at 10:43 am

I’m at work too. Where do these people work where they get all this time off? I want a job!

I am looking forward to taking my 6 year old for his snow boarding lessons in February!

melissadishes December 30, 2010 at 11:48 am

I work all week except for tomorrow, we are open, but I opted to have the day off. Why? So I can workout before we leave town. Yeah, i’m a goober. That and I can’t take ANY leave between Jan 11 and June, so I needed to take advantage of some sanity. (taking off next Friday too).

I am looking forward to NYE in Houston and seeing some old friends.

I’d LOVE to go back to Jamaica (we went 4 years ago), but Dan hated it, so unless someone else wants to take me, it’s not happening

Nat December 30, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Marshall’s dinner looks INCREDIBLE! Think I might make something similar for dinner tonight… :)

And you just made me realize that I pronounce “sure” as “shore” too…

thefitacademic December 30, 2010 at 12:04 pm

omg, I seriously loved the pic of the boy cooking with the dog….waiting for food to be dropped? (not sure if that’s what was going on, but if it was my dog- thats what he’d be doing – little scavenger!) : ) Sorry about not having any time off! No bueno!

a taste of health with balance December 30, 2010 at 12:25 pm

i.LOVE.spaghetti squash.
