muscle fever.

in meals,moves

i love DOMS. love, love, love. am i crazy? maybe.

for those of you who don’t know, DOMS stands for:

Delayed

Onset

Muscle

Soreness

here is wikipedia’s definition, because they have a better way with words than i do.

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), also called muscle fever, is the pain and stiffness felt in muscles several hours to days after unaccustomed and/or strenuous exercise. Delayed onset muscle soreness begins 8-24 hours after exercise, peaks 24-72 hours after exercise and subsides over the next 5-7 days. It is a symptom of muscle damage caused by eccentric exercise. After such exercise, the muscle adapts rapidly to prevent muscle damage, and thereby DOMS, in repeated bouts.

(source.)

ha! up until i read that wikipedia description i had never heard of it referred to as “muscle fever”! that’s great. and hilarious. i am using it.

so, i know that having DOMS is not an indication of how hard you worked out. in fact, it is perfectly fine to not ever have DOMS—that does not mean you didn’t get a good workout in. i guess it is all mental for me, though, because i love a good bout of muscle fever Winking smile

anyway, i haven’t mentioned this to you guys, but it has been really hard for me to get DOMS in my triceps and biceps lately. the day after an upper body workout, the ONLY place i can feel it is in my chest. oh man.. that area where your chest and arm connects? it has been so, so sore. i have been able to get DOMS in my chest with minimal effort. i don’t think i have been lifting particularly heavier weights on my chest exercises. but i HAVE been trying to lift heavier weights with my biceps and triceps lately because i just haven’t felt that burn that i love so much. what gives?!

so.. i switched it up. i decided that my muscles were sick of my regular routine, they were getting way too used to it, so i changed my routine. not by a lot—i still followed the body for life style of upper body workout. i just switched out a couple of moves and changed the order and speed in which i did the moves. the result?

my triceps and biceps are aching today. hurts so good! i can’t even lift my fork without feeling the muscle fever in my biceps.

here are the details of yesterday’s upper body workout.. i superset the pyramid sets and then did the final exhaustion reps back to back. this will only make sense if you do body for life workouts.. so if that is all greek to you, just ignore.

that’s IT. this workout only took me a little over 30 minutes and i feel like it is the best upper body workout i have completed in months.

i focused on doing the repetitions with perfect form and really put a lot of effort into each rep. quality over quantity here, folks. a good workout doesn’t have to take 2 hours! just do the moves correct and adequately and you will feel the burn the next day.

in other news, we had marshall’s step sister’s rehearsal dinner tonight! she is getting married on saturday and i couldn’t be happier for her & her mister-to-be. possibly the coolest part of their wedding is that it falls on 12-11-10! what luckies. or is it luckys? either way…

the rehearsal dinner was at marie callendar’s.

apparently i have lazy eye on ol’ righty. Winking smile<—looks just like me!

it was a great time! we don’t see marshall’s side of the family enough so i really enjoy any and all time we get to spend with them. i am so excited for saturday.

after the dinner we paid a visit to emily & her husband—they just adopted a new dog and marshall & i just had to meet her.

huli!

sorry em, i stole your photo off FB because i didn’t have my camera with me. hope you don’t mind. Winking smile

imageimage

congrats, jess! please email me your address and i will get your vanilla bean paste shipped out to you sometime in the very near future.

Qs~

1. do you enjoy “muscle fever” or do you loathe the DOMS?

2. today was national pastry day! what is your favorite pastry?

Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather December 9, 2010 at 11:03 pm

Girl I love me some DOMS. Way to switch up your routine to feel it!

Meg December 9, 2010 at 11:06 pm

I didn’t know it had a smart little abbreviation, but I love DOMS. I didn’t know that it’s not always because you’ve worked out hard. Even though it’s hard to even sit down or stand up, I love the feeling! I think because it makes me appreciate what an amazing and strong machine my body is.

I actually made snickerdoodles today, unfortunately, I over mixed them and they came out flat. :( Guess I’ll just have to make another batch…

Heather December 9, 2010 at 11:08 pm

oh my gosh, you have my heart…i LOVE DOMS! makes me feel like i really did something to work my muscles :)

and favorite pastry? either a fresh, buttery croissant or a donut. or both.

janetha @ meals & moves December 9, 2010 at 11:11 pm

if i could “like” comments on my blog, i would. the both part. i like that :)

Nat December 9, 2010 at 11:25 pm

i DO love DOMS! Kinda weird, isn’t it? but I actually relish the feeling. :)

Jenn (GH) December 10, 2010 at 12:13 am

Yeah…I like DOMS to an extent. There have been a few (not many) where I felt like I couldn’t move. That I don’t like. Okay well I sort of do in a very very small way. ;-)

I’m not really a pastry person. I know, weird.

edenseats December 10, 2010 at 12:27 am

I thought DOMS stands for Dirty Old Man Syndrome ;)
I like the sore feeling but like jenn said, to an extent. If it hurt to move again, I’m not a fan. But a little soreness reminds me I switched up my exercise a enough.
pastries? Chocolate croissants I probably my fav. I made loads of them in culinary school and it took so many hours of labor! The flakier the pastry, the more labor went into it and the more yummy it probably is. chocolate+butter+flaky layers+butter+more butter=heaven

momma b December 10, 2010 at 12:31 am

Oh yes I LOVE muscle fever haha! Still aching from upper body on Tuesday and just took an ibuprophen to get me thru the night because of the killer lower body I did today, yep it hurts SO good :) !!!!

Pastry – not a huge fan but I could be tempted with a buttery, flaky or is it flakey croissant……

xoxo

edenseats December 10, 2010 at 1:47 pm

momma b, I love that you comment so often on your daughter’s wonderful blog! Truly, you are one solid support system!

April December 10, 2010 at 5:09 am

I have a serious case in my chest and shoulders LOVE IT!!!!!!

Karen December 10, 2010 at 5:14 am

I have a love/hate relationship with muscle fever in my legs. I love it because I know I challenged my muscles and got a great workout but I hate it because I look like a fool when I walk around and go up/down stairs!

Paige is Running Around Normal December 10, 2010 at 5:15 am

I’d say I enjoy DOMS at first, and then it gets kind of annoying, haha.
You had quite the night for a Thursday!! Sounds very fun! :)

Matt December 10, 2010 at 5:33 am

I am not sure I have ever even had DOMS… Haha.

Jessica @ How Sweet December 10, 2010 at 5:34 am

I actually love DOMS!

Lauren December 10, 2010 at 5:43 am

I never knew it was called DOMS, I just always called it a good pain. But now I’m happy there is a scientific definition for this. I love when my abs experience this. I know that means I’m working new muscles I may not have ever tapped into.

Sounds like a great time with Marshall’s fam. Hope you have a lovely Friday!

kissmybroccoli December 10, 2010 at 6:18 am

DOMS and I have a love/hate relationship. I love to complain about how I hate being sore! ;) Honestly, I always feel like if I’m not sore that I didn’t work hard enough…kinda like a badge of honor for kicking my butt in the gym!

Girl, you HAVE GOT to try vanilla in your oats! Makes such a difference!

I have a soft spot for unglazed cake donuts, especially the cinnamon-sugar dusted ones!! Mmmm!

Di December 10, 2010 at 6:51 am

I always feel like I’ve gotten a better workout when I have DOMS…but it’s good to know that not having it doesn’t mean I didn’t get a good workout. ;)

I’m glad you had fun at dinner!

coffeeandthepaper December 10, 2010 at 6:58 am

I didn’t know that’s what it was called, but dad (a runner) talks about muscle fever all the time when he lifts. He loves it.

Is a biscuit a pastry?

jules524 December 10, 2010 at 7:07 am

Love DOMS. Like you, I’ve really only been feeling themm in my chest though. I want to up the weights for bis and tris, but every time I do, I go too high and look like a fool huffing and puffing trying to lift them. Baby steps, I guess.

I’ve never met a pastry I didn’t like!

Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) December 10, 2010 at 7:11 am

I totally love DOMS too. Maybe we’re both weird. :P

And I ALWAYS get pain in the almost-armpit area of my chest. Yeah, totally sucks.

Favorite pastry… SO hard. Tie between Croissants and Cinnamon Buns :D

xo

enjoyingthechaos December 10, 2010 at 7:24 am

I love muscle fever!!and hot yoga does it every time!!!

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine December 10, 2010 at 7:25 am

I had some serious muscle fever after my half…I was fine the day after but two days after I was in PAIN. Hurts so good though :)

Favorite pastry = cannolis from this little Italian bakery in the Bronx. Best. Things. Ever.

Faith December 10, 2010 at 7:28 am

I love it too! I actually didn’t know what it was called until now but I’m definitely experiencing it in my upper back/shoulder muscles from a KILLER circuit on Wednesday :D

Heather (Where's the Beach) December 10, 2010 at 7:34 am

LOL – I’ve never heard of it called muscle fever. That’s great. I love DOMS. Makes me feel strong ;-)

natalie (the sweets life) December 10, 2010 at 8:02 am

Totally calling it muscle fever from now on! And YES I love it! There’s seriously no better feeling than soreness resulting from a butt-kicking workout! :)

Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun December 10, 2010 at 8:11 am

I totally get it. I look forward to the feeling of DOMS after my first workout when I go back after pregnancy. I know even just a little bit will give it to me then. I do hate that I can get it easily in my hamstrings. That is the one place I would prefer not to be sore. Ever. I hate sore hamstrings. I love when my butt, back, quads, bis get sore. Those are the tough spots for me too.

Shannon December 10, 2010 at 8:11 am

love doms, hurts so good :) and i think i need to change things up soon!

Lindsey December 10, 2010 at 8:23 am

I love muscle fever! The best is after an intense hour long swim :)

Teri [a foodie stays fit] December 10, 2010 at 8:34 am

I love getting sore after a workout because it RARELY happens for me.

That pup is soooo cute!

Katy December 10, 2010 at 9:26 am

You are intense! Enough said! ;)

thedelicateplace December 10, 2010 at 9:46 am

1. i love DOMS. it reminds me of why i enjoy working out in the first place! i love feeling “worked” out
2. fave pastry would be something with apple or apricot/almond slivers

Marg December 10, 2010 at 10:00 am

I have that feeling right now in my legs. Sometimes I love it sometimes I hate it!

I had a recipe in mind with croissants tonight, may try to make them homemade though.

purplebirdblog December 10, 2010 at 10:15 am

I have amazing DOMS from a nice strenuous yoga class last night and I loooooooooove it!

That dog is ridiculously cute!

janae @hungryrunnergirl.com December 10, 2010 at 10:26 am

I love DOMS because all day I am reminded how hard core I am ha. Love your posted workouts:) Random question, I always love your clothes….where do you shop in Utah, I need to get some clothes. My favorite pastries are eclairs. That apple pie looks amazing!

Katie December 10, 2010 at 10:30 am

Love DOMS! I feel I really got a great workout when i experience it!

Love your workout here and love it was done in 30 minutes! xoxo

Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) December 10, 2010 at 10:56 am

Sounds weird, but I’m not really a pastry fan… who knew.

I LOOOOOOOOVE doms. Infact, if I lift and don’t get them… I get a little miffed ;P I always set out to get them and when I don’t I am def dissappointed. I mean, you’re there (the gym)… might as well make it count. Right? right.

melissadishes December 10, 2010 at 10:59 am

I LOVE DOMS from lifting weights.
I thought I was in the minority of weird people who like it. That and I secretly love the pain inflicted by deep tissue massage and foam rollers

Heather December 10, 2010 at 11:36 am

I love DOMS….and I have started calling it “DOMS” since reading it on your blog! No one has a clue what I am talking about!

Worst DOMS ever…”My arms hurt too much to run”…they really did!

kgirl December 10, 2010 at 11:54 am

love it! I’ve always referred to it as having “rips”… as in, rips in the muscle. I will officially begin calling it DOMS. the BEST is when it hurts to walk up stairs and you have to grip the railing.. sooo funny doing the cowgirl walk everywhere.

Michelle... December 10, 2010 at 12:04 pm

I am too going to incorporate “muscle fever” into my vocabulary, LOL! I too love DOMS. Being someone who’s played sports of some kind for all my life, I just associate it with working hard, and it “hurts so good”!

On to pastries…if cupcakes are considered a pastry, then they are my favorite! If not, then pain au chocolate/chocolate croissants have long been a favorite.

IHeartVegetables December 10, 2010 at 1:14 pm

I love the DOMS! They remind me how hard I worked the day before! :)

Freckled Foodie December 10, 2010 at 1:27 pm

glad you had a nice time with marshall’s family! :) looks like a nice little meal you got yourself.

lowandbhold December 10, 2010 at 2:20 pm

I love DOMS, but moreso in my upper body than in my legs.

Huli is SO pretty!!

Erica D December 10, 2010 at 2:42 pm

LOVE DOMS! I didn’t even know there was a name for it!

cbrady3 December 10, 2010 at 3:19 pm

I love DOMS! I just recently switched up my ab moves and have been getting them again. <3 <3

And I'm not a huge pastry person, but my favorite might be a freshly baked chocolate croissant..mmm from a bakery in france

Tamizn December 10, 2010 at 4:11 pm

I’ve totally got DOMS coming my way after my insane workout today! x x

MelissaNibbles December 10, 2010 at 4:20 pm

I have fibromyalgia so DOMS really hurts me, so I don’t like it at all. Cute doggie!

Pure2raw twins December 10, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Glad you got to feel the burn in your bi and tris!! Oh yes I just love DOMS, haha
My chest area is normally the area that is more sore but for some reason these past two days my biceps have been so sore. And I am not sure why?? But I hope it is a good thing.

Michelle

BroccoliHut December 10, 2010 at 7:32 pm

I’m gonna say yay for DOMS–it makes me feel like I discovered a new muscle group. It always happens to me after tubing!

Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) December 10, 2010 at 8:49 pm

so weird but this post didnt show up for me in my reader til like 18 hrs after the fact?! WEIRD. Must be on island time and movin’ slowly…lol.

Doms. It takes ALOT for me to get doms. I love it when it happens but rarely. Almost never in my arms altho squats can do it for my hams/quads if i try hard enough :)

Jennifer@ knackfornutrition December 10, 2010 at 9:28 pm

I am obsessed with DOMS too! I tweeted that just the other day. I find that I have difficulty getting DOMS on certain areas.

Heather December 11, 2010 at 12:52 pm

OMG, I seriously HEART the DOMS. I was that way this week!!!! It hurts so good. :)
Favorite pastry?? Hmmmm…….is cannoli considered a pastry? I don’t eat them very often, but when I do they are seriously heavenly……!
