things i use and love: round two.

by Janetha on November 17, 2010

in meals,moves

thank you for all the super sweet comments on my last post. i am blushing.

i sure hope a lot of you decide to purchase the blogger calendar and support lymphoma research.

image

i am buying six calendars myself! click HERE to purchase one for yourself or someone you love.

*****************************************************************************************

well, i’m not going to pretend with you guys. today was pretty bland in the meals & moves department. fact.

don’t believe me? fine. i will prove it.

meals

breakfast: cinnamon protein oats

IMG_2483

in the bowl:

  • 1/3 cup oats cooked in almond milk
  • 1 serving vanilla protein powder
  • ~ 1 T chia seeds
  • ~ 1 T mighty maple peanut butter
  • cinnamon. lots of it.

IMG_2484

lunch: a leftover stuffed bell pepper & asparagus

IMG_2486

lots of ketchup.

IMG_2487IMG_2490

i like asparagus with nothing on it. plain. no salt, pepper or butter.

IMG_2488

i love the way the stalks look. like trees.

wow, this is boring. am i really talking about why i like the way asparagus looks? i promise, this post gets better. don’t fall asleep yet.

snack: slice of toast with PB

IMG_2502

sometimes i break my own rule of not eating fat immediately before a workout. this was one of those times. i think the dogs were happy about this, because they each got a smear of skippy on their noses Smile

dinner: mexican casserole (using shredded chicken breasts instead of ground turkey)

IMG_2515

topped with greek yogurt, salsa and avocado.

IMG_2518

whole wheat tortilla on the side.

IMG_2520

dessert: a couple handfuls of dark chocolate chips

IMG_2533

moves

i worked out between my snack and my dinner.

HIIT on stairmill:

minute # level intensity from 1-10 (RPE scale)
1 6 5
2 7 5
3 8 6
4 10 7
5 12 8
6 14 9
7 8 6
8 10 7
9 12 8
10 14 9
11 8 6
12 10 7
13 12 8
14 14 9
15 8 6
16 10 7
17 12 8
18 14 9
19 16 10
20 6 5

my max HR was 178. who says the stairmill isn’t a good cardio workout?! i went 2.38 miles.. that is actually .02 miles more than when i do my typical 20 minute HIIT on the treadmill.

i also walked on the treadmill @ 3.5 MPH on a 15% incline for 10 minutes. i had a magazine to read!

************************************************

see.. toldja. today was pretty “meh”.

i guess we can’t always be glamorous.

i’m kidding.

really.

since i have nothing of importance to share with the class, i decided now would be a good time for another round of things i use and love! you may recall my first installment that included cleaning supplies that i swear by. this time around i am going to talk about websites.

yep. websites.

we all use them. probably every day. if you are reading this right now then you are guilty of being a website user—i caught you!

there are a select number of bookmark tabs that i keep in my web browser. how about a screen shot?

image

i circled my tabs for your viewing pleasure. you’re welcome.

starting at the left!

gmail.

image

do you remember when gmail first came around? you had to have some sort of invitation or something to join. i didn’t understand all the hype. i put off starting a gmail account for quite awhile. i had my hotmail and was doing just fine. well, then hotmail changed a bunch of stuff and it bothered me.. so i perused gmail a bit. i started an account.

now i have three.

a blog gmail, a personal gmail and another personal gmail with my new name. geez, talk about greedy. good thing you don’t need invitations to get an account!

i am not going to go into detail about why i adore gmail (that would take hours!) but i will mention a few reasons:

  • easy to search entire inbox OR specific folders
  • single emails can appear in more than one folder—gmail calls these “labels”
  • gchat.. a chat room within an email inbox
  • instead of sending a new email each time you get an email from the same person.. it sends one email thread. this is so convenient because i get my comments emailed to me. when they used to come to hotmail, i would get a new email for each new comment. now, i get one big email that has all the individual comments listed and i can click on a specific one to reply to it. SO SIMPLE.
  • compatible with my phone. i have a droid.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the next tab is hotmail. i only have that tabbed because i like to check my hotmail daily—i still have lots of emails that come to the account! but really, i hate hotmail, so it is not on the list of websites i love.
the tab after that is my online banking tab. i am not going to rave about the website but i will say i LOVE online banking! i pay 90% of my bills online and i even transfer money between different banks online. highly recommend you go paperless and do as much banking and bill paying online as you can. it’s convenient and it saves trees!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

whiskey militia.

image

i am slightly addicted to this one-deal-at-a-time website. it is based locally but anyone can use it! whiskey militia pulls items from its parent company, dogfunk.com, and features a ridiculously good deal on that one item until the set amount being sold is gone.  right now there are a pair of snowboard goggles up for sale.. but it changes so often, so i check back all the time.

i recently made a purchase. a pair of skullcandy ear buds for 65% off. lovely.

image

i love whiskey militia because it has a lot of items that i would buy even if they weren’t on sale. whiskey militia is mainly snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing clothing, shoes, outerwear and gear. there are a few similar sister sites that you guys may be interested in:

and the parent sites are actually sites i ALWAYS buy stuff from, dogfunk.com and backcountry.com. they have theeee cutest clothes and shoes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the next tab is the salt lake city groupon. i only recently added this tab and have purchased one groupon so far. check out http://www.groupon.com/ to get the low down on the groupons in your own town.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

google reader.

image

i am not sure how i read blogs before google reader. it makes checking my favorite blogs SO simple and streamlined.

what makes google reader even more convenient is categories. i break the blogs i read up into different categories.. so if i want to read a specific type i can go straight there or if i want to mark a category as read, the others remain unread.

for example.. i have a category called “no commenting”—this includes a bunch of blogs that, while i might comment on them once in awhile, i usually just read the blog without a comment. i this category includes blogs like failblog, the pioneer woman, fitsugar and the like. almost all blogs that are JUST recipes are in this category. i never want to miss a recipe, but i also don’t really have anything to say about the post. some other categories include “foodie friends”, “IRL” (in real life blog friends), “exercise blogs” and “family & friends”. it is so nice to be able to read based on the category.

i highly recommend you utilize this feature!!

also, you can “star” items. i star things left and right. any time i see a recipe that i want to try.. yep, it gets a star. then when i need some inspiration in the kitchen, i simply check out my starred items. i went to my starred item trying to figure out dinner the other night. oddly, i discovered that 80% of my starred items were DESSERT recipes. hmmm. strange. ;)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the next two tabs are all about socializing.. facebook and twitter. i love both of these sites but i don’t think i need to explain them!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

the daily plate.

image

it does have a feature where you can plug in your allotted calories for the day and it will count down how many calories you have left for the day as well as calories burned during exercise.. i don’t use that feature. i can see how it would be helpful to calorie counters, though.

i don’t count calories, but i used to be really curious about my macros when i was doing body for life. the daily plate lets you plug whatever you ate in for a specific meal and it gives you a pie chart ratio breakdown of that meal or your whole entire day. SO cool.

say i ate protein oats for breakfast. i plug in all the ingredients and it spits out all the nutritional info along with a pie chart telling me what percentage of eat macro (protein, carbs, fat) the calories came from. handy.

image

i also use this website to calculate my nutritional info when i create recipes.

for example, my turkey goulash. i plug in all ingredients, the number of servings in the recipe and voila—instant calculations! complete with macro pie chart.

image

awesome, right?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
well, that brings me to the end of telling you about the websites i use and love. there are many more where that came from, but i feel like i’ve already said too much. hope you enjoyed hearing me ramble about websites i love!
Q~
what is one of your favorite websites you use and love?
xo. janetha g.
Leah November 17, 2010 at 11:08 pm
I’m on Livestrong too! {leahault if you want to add!}
Other favs: gmail, twitter, wordpress, reader, facebook
purplebirdblog November 17, 2010 at 11:10 pm
nataliedee.com makes me super happy camper (and you too)! :)
i also love riotclitshave.com…which sounds dirty, but it’s just a play on “right click save” and is a photo blog. she posts some really fascinating (and sometimes NSFW) pics there.
Mary (A Merry Life) November 17, 2010 at 11:31 pm
I like the peek into your browser. Great sites! Gmail is definitely one of my favorites which is good because it’s my most used. :)
elise November 18, 2010 at 12:35 am
hahaha…as per your recommendation i too have a “no commenting” tab now :)
way to save trees with the paperless billing.
my tabs arent as interesting: FB, twitter, reader…you know all the usual suspects
Nicole C. November 18, 2010 at 12:43 am
I love me some Gmail. Just hooked my grandma up with an account since her outlook blows.
I religiously check everyday the following: facebook, travbuddy, fox news, groupon, meals and moves (who would have thought right ;) and 6pm.com I love dogfunk but didn’t know about it’s sister companies. I use Altrec a lot too, good finds on there and great customer service. 6pm is a Zappos ‘outlet’ if you will, sweeeet deals!
marisa November 18, 2010 at 1:20 am
Happy to see you have an email from me in your gmail screen shot! :) Next, how have you never told me about bonktown or chainlove with Eric’s hobby?! Now I know. Now I will probably be poorer. Finally, on my google reader for blogs, I found that I was starring so many things that I started tagging the posts. So, I have a tag for desserts, breads, appetizers, etc and I also tag it as recipe. I have fields for Christmas gifts, Halloween ideas, kid crafts… you get it… it was a starry, starry night with all of the stars I had. Now I just have to remember which tag I give things and that is why I multi-tag… I’m bound to find it eventually. Last but not least- you will be here in a week!!!
lynn @ the actor's diet November 18, 2010 at 1:30 am
hey hot pinup babe,
thanks for the computer tour! now you’re a nerdy hot pinup babe.
Jessica @ How Sweet November 18, 2010 at 5:40 am
Does perezhilton count? ;)
Lauren November 18, 2010 at 5:46 am
Why no fat before a workout? I’ve never heard of that before.
Gosh I don’t know what I did before Gmail. It saves my life most days.
I love that you categorize your blog reads. The inner OCD in me wants to do the same now! ;)
I promise, you will be in my MVP category! :) Love you love!
susan November 18, 2010 at 5:47 am
I don’t care if you think today was bland in terms of meals because you photography is super awesome! I love the white plates on the black table!
I’m totally with you on gmail. Its the greatest! I also use google calendar a lot and I have it synced to my phone.
Matt November 18, 2010 at 5:54 am
I LOVE gmail and google reader! Have you tried using the next button on reader? It saved my life.
I will blog about it ;)
a taste of health with balance November 18, 2010 at 6:21 am
I just started using the daily plate for the same reasons and I love it! I need to get on google reader asap because my method of reading is getting annoying haha
Hangry Pants November 18, 2010 at 6:21 am
Hey hey hey, I’m in your google reader! Thanks for showing the daily plate. People are always asking for cal counts for recipes.
Abby November 18, 2010 at 6:40 am
Just seeing “Google Reader” stresses me out, so I can’t relate to that one. The first sites I visit are blogs, but also Seriouseats.com, Slashfood.com, Facebook, etc. Of course there are others, but that would give the impression that I’m unproductive at work, which is not the case ;)
Di November 18, 2010 at 6:48 am
I love my Google Reader. I also have no idea how I read blogs before it! And skullcandy ear buds are awesome! My ear buds that came with my iPod were dying a slow miserable death and I bought the skullcandy ones and they’re great. I don’t have to crank the volume to hear anymore!
I visit fewer websites during the day now that I’m only on the internet at breakfast and lunch (at work, anyway) but gmail, twitter, boston.com, and Google reader (which needs to be reorganized BADLY) are all ones I try to get to daily!
Talia @ Texas Gunslinger November 18, 2010 at 6:54 am
Wow, if you think your eats were “boring”, you’d keel over lookin’ at my eats. I think your eats are always so so so good, even todays! I am jonesin’ for that stuffed bell pepper and have been wanting to make it for-evvvv-er. I’m going to add it to my list of “Talia Finally Cooks For Her Husband” meals for after my competition. He’ll be grateful. I’ll be grateful. It will just make magic in our tummies:)
Oh, oh, oh- I LOVE The Daily Plate! I am on there so many times a day to track my calories, but starting next week I’m weening myself off it slowly and not really going to be so meticulous and “religious” about counting calories. I’m finally at my goal weight (WAHOO!) and happy with my physique and I know I need to still stay accountable because now is the “hard” part– maintaining this weight. I’ve got another competition coming up in February so I still want to stay at my goal, so we’ll see how I maintain this weight while also adding more foods back in and occasionally treats. I guess the journey’s really never over, huh?
I know I already said it, but wanted to say it again- I LOVE your photo in the calendar! Va-va-voom!!!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine November 18, 2010 at 7:09 am
Um, Facebook is my homepage :) It’s actually because I forget to check it if it’s not…although once I’m on, I get sucked in. Bah.
Favorite sites = Reader, Gmail, NYU’s Student pages, Twitter…I try to keep my bookmarked bar light or I spaz out from all the possibilities!
Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) November 18, 2010 at 7:26 am
Great list! I love TeuxDeux. I don’t know what I would do without it!!
xo
Heather November 18, 2010 at 7:30 am
I couldn’t live without Google Reader – it’s a MUST! I also use the Daily Plate!
Great post!
Sadie November 18, 2010 at 7:33 am
Did you know that you can have your all your emails from your hotmail account forwarded to your gmail account? That way you can never have to use hotmail again! You can also reply to the emails with your hotmail address if you don’t want the receiver to know your gmail address. For example in college I hated my college’s email interface so I was able to import all my emails to gmail and could use gmail to respond with the college email address so my profressors did not know my personal address. If you click on gmail settings its under Accounts and Imports.
Daily Must Checks for me: Gmail, google reader, facebook, Craigslist (using the craigseasy button), freecycle, mint.com, gilt, foodgawker, tastespotting, flylady
MelissaNibbles November 18, 2010 at 7:38 am
How do you do screenshots like that?
The website I’m on all day everyday is Jezebel. I’m all up in the comments.
Freckled Foodie November 18, 2010 at 7:53 am
i adoreee target.com and amazon. i’m constantly checking out the latest :)
GetHealthyWithHeather November 18, 2010 at 8:07 am
How do you get your background black in pictures? It really makes the picture pop and I’ve seen it done before. You’re like a camera genious huh?
I think my favorite website might be mapmyrun. I use it all the time since my Garmin died.
janetha @ meals & moves November 18, 2010 at 8:14 am
Lol so not a genius! My table is just a dark espresso color. That’s it!
Holly November 18, 2010 at 8:10 am
does your reader say, “RILF” as in “roommates i’d like to f#$@.” if it does, that is quite possibly the best thing i have ever seen. and obvs, i better be on that list.
Teri [a foodie stays fit] November 18, 2010 at 8:29 am
yay for America First Credit Union! :) I still do all my banking through them. And yeah…I work at a bank headquarted in NC…
Websites I check daily:
*the local pound/humane society (I can’t help it! Even though we have no plans to get another dog right now)
*Google Reader, but I now use the “next” button instead of viewing it in the reader page. I also have my Google Reader grouped. It’s awesome.
*TeuxDeux (I actually just use the app on my phone, but the website is good too)
*Mint.com – best budgeting site ever!
Erica November 18, 2010 at 8:46 am
I don’t think your day looks boring! Quite delicious actually :) Especially that stuffed pepper + ketchup. I heart gmail. I also love urban spoon and groupon. Fabulous-ness.
janae @hungryrunnergirl.com November 18, 2010 at 9:04 am
Your meals weren’t bland yesterday. Ketchup makes everything better. I will be making your mexican casserole.
A website that I use and love is silly but I am a teacher and the uen website has so many great ideas, lesson plans and movies….wow, I sound like a really old and boring person because I get excited about this website.
I will now be visiting whiskey militia, thanks for the recommendation.
suki @ [Super Duper Fantastic] November 18, 2010 at 9:17 am
Google Reader and Mint.com. I also use Statcounter to track page stats, and I check it obsessively. :/
edenseats November 18, 2010 at 10:22 am
I know this may sound very silly, but I love http://runpee.com/. I have a teeny bladder (sorry if thats tmi) so it tells me when they boring parts are in movies so i can go to the restroom.
I am also a big fan of http://www.supercook.com/. you type the ingredients you have into the site’s search bar and it will look through its database of 300,000-plus recipes and spit out the ones that match. So you use food that would otherwise spoil.
Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) November 20, 2010 at 12:37 am
That’s genius! Both the peeing and the cooking!
LC @ Let Them Eat Lentils November 18, 2010 at 10:56 am
Similar to the one you were talking about with the deals – Woot.com. They have a new thing on sale every day. Also, you can get the daily groupon emailed to you if you don’t want to have to check it.
Other additions for your taskbar – Twitter.com, bit.ly.com so you can shorten the URL quickly for Twitter, and Facebook of course :)
I have been holding out on Google reader and using my RSS feed to my iGoogle homepage, but now that you’ve broken down the benefits, I think I’m going to have to make the switch.
Jamie @ Food in Real Life November 18, 2010 at 11:38 am
Skully candy are my favorite headphones! I find them at Marshalls (ha) and they are usually $9.99.
My favorite thing is windows live writer! Not a website persay, but it is amazing.
janetha @ meals & moves November 18, 2010 at 11:39 am
Agreed. It is life changing.
ally November 18, 2010 at 11:44 am
im the first name on your g chat :0) haha just cause my name starts with a but im fibe with that ;0). just wanted to say i still read and love your posts every day but i read from my droid at work so comnenting is hard which is why its so rare. love you!
thedelicateplace November 18, 2010 at 12:24 pm
one of my sites is modcloth.com i love their clothes! other faves: gmail, twitter, FB, a select few webcomics (geek) and science news daily with a splash of nytimes
Katie November 18, 2010 at 12:42 pm
You’re boring day of eating was completely NOT boring to me. The mexican casserole? And meatloaf? Those are foods that would be on a GOOD day for me.
Also, you look phenomenal in the blogger babes calendar! Love it, love you.
Jen November 18, 2010 at 12:49 pm
I’ve never even heard of google reader, now i’m on a quest this afternoon to get it all set up!
Jen
cbrady3 November 18, 2010 at 2:05 pm
I’ve been an AOL.com addict for years. Where else can you get on epage of semi-legitimate news, and 7 more pages of ridiculous tabloid fun stuff? I read it every morning!!
Naomi(onefitfoodie) November 18, 2010 at 2:35 pm
Steph November 18, 2010 at 2:48 pm
Killing two birds with one stone
1) your calendar photoshoot – AWESOME! Thanks for posting pics – they all looked great and looks like you had a ton of fun!
2) go to dooce.com, if you don’t know about the site (i promise it’s safe) – your life may forever be changed…especially if you manage to find the Lady Gaga Halloween costume.
Shellie November 18, 2010 at 5:11 pm
Firstly – thanks for commenting on my blog!!!! I LOVE your blog =)
Hmm… favorite website to use would have to be good ole Gmail
Valerie Ceballos November 18, 2010 at 5:16 pm
You look so beautiful!!! Definitely better than my lolz cat calendar ;)
Hum…I would have to include cnn.com to the list since I work here.
Salah November 18, 2010 at 6:13 pm
I love livestrong!!! I’m not a huge calorie counter either but its great to have when creating new recipes!!!
Sweet Cheeks November 18, 2010 at 7:49 pm
thanks for the all cool sites! I never knew you could organize Google Reader into categories like that. I will have to try it!
Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) November 18, 2010 at 8:39 pm
wow I love reading what you read, what sites you go to, and youve explained your commenting/google reader organization strategy to me before on email :) but it was great to see it this way!
tabs I always have open are my own blog so I can edit it
my gmail
and about 10-20 tabs worth of recipes that i truly want to try that i see around :)
paijery November 18, 2010 at 8:40 pm
oohhhweeee you are a stunna!! Those pics are soo gorge!!
I love shopping at dogfunk (DO NOT love the crazy duty though) but I have never heard of backcountry! Or whiskey malitia or daily plate! What what?? I don’t even have a gmail account, twitter and I didn’t know you could CATEGORIZE in google reader!
Alsooo….love that my blog is on your google reader!! Holla for the blue buddha bowl!! xoxo
BroccoliHut November 18, 2010 at 8:58 pm
Now I really want a big pile of ketchup.
natalie (the sweets life) November 19, 2010 at 12:08 pm
I loooooooooooove google reader and definitely sort mine into helpful categories too! I think I read too many blogs as a result ;)
simplyshaka November 19, 2010 at 3:24 pm
Yay for sharing links! I’m always on the hunt for new stuff to occupy my mind and time with. I love foodnetworkhumor.com, peopleofwalmart.com, overheardintheoffice.com
Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) November 20, 2010 at 12:45 am
I don’t know how I survived aol for as long as I did. It’s as archaic as the dinosaurs roaming the earth.
Being an official gym whore, I keep all of my gym schedules in my tabs for quick reference. I also used to use My Plate- I still use it for recipes. I may return to counting that way. Now I’m just winging it, Rainman style.
Your Windows life writer is my Blogger in Draft (a beta program) that is usually amazing. As I told you in a DM, Live writer cut me off from adding photos. Um, yah, not gonna work. Sayanara, WLW.
ALso one of the best things I use is the GPS on my phone- AND you can search for businesses and phone numbers easily on the map function. Just search for whatever you want and it shows you all of the ones nearest you. You can say “restaurants” or “Subway” or “health food store” and boom. It pops up, with a phone number that if you click, it just connects you. AWESOME!
Really, really great post! And thanks again for mentioning the calendars. :-)
Barbara November 20, 2010 at 8:13 pm
Great post! I love blog deals and group on! I have fitday, hotmail (I actually like the new set up! the tabs, easy search, folders, starlight etc), blogger, nutrition database, thesaurus, facebook, cnn, and some other ones. Thanks for the great post! Are those headphones good? I have been considering them, but wasn’t sure about the quality and if they stay in!
:)
