i say potato, you say.. yam?

by Janetha on September 21, 2010

in meals,moves

this just in: y’all love your garlic! if you haven’t had a chance, click over to enter my ceramic grater giveaway.  several of your comments reminded me how much i love roasting a whole bulb of garlic and using it as a spread on bread in lieu of butter. that needs to happen in my kitchen. stat.

i took some photos today. and i worked out. wanna hear about it? i hope so. because i am ready to write about it.

ready? go!

breakfast.

on a whim, i bought some (gasp) NON greek yogurt the other day.

IMG_0026

it was on sale and had good stats. plus, i love stonyfield farms and everything they stand for.

IMG_0031

bad morning lighting, but you can see i combined a cup of the yogurt with fresh blueberries & 1/3 cup of nature’s indulgence vanilla nut granola.

IMG_0028

i guess i am just used to the thickness of greek yogurt, because this yogurt was just so runny.  tasty, for sure, but.. runny.  i’m spoiled in the yogurt department. i like it thick. (TWSS). however, i did enjoy this yogurt and would buy it again! it is a lot more affordable than greek yogurt. perhaps i will try straining it to make my own greek yogurt. i’m pretty lazy, so no promises.

lunch.

sunday night, i baked six sweet potatoes. well, i guess my grocer calls them yams. at my store, yams=deep orange and sweet potatoes=light brownish/yellow.  hmmmm.. whatever, mister grocery store.

my lunch was one of said yams/sweet potatoes plus a few other ingredients.

IMG_0041

my favorite topper for a sweet potato: cottage cheese & sunflower seed butter.  the only thing missing was the ketchup! (i was out.)

IMG_0044

every time i eat this combo someone comments on how it can’t be good. but i promise, it is! don’t knock it ‘til you try it ;) i had a side of normandy style veggies, to add some oomph to my meal.

IMG_0042

snack.

IMG_0052

what you don’t see: me eating this snack in my car, squeezing every last drop out of the almond butter pack.. and then hitting a stop light and tearing the pack down the side, splitting it open and licking it clean.

true story.

what? i love justin’s!

i had a killer lower body workout yesterday (i will type it up this week to share with you guys) and my glutes and abs are sore like something fierce!  today was HIIT on the treadmill, it was pretty painful, but i got it done.

body for life style HIIT:

minute # speed (MPH) intensity (RPE scale)
1 6.0 5
2 6.3 5
3 6.5 6
4 7.0 7
5 7.5 8
6 8.0 9
7 6.5 6
8 7.0 7
9 7.5 8
10 8.0 9
11 6.5 6
12 7.0 7
13 7.5 8
14 8.0 9
15 6.5 6
16 7.0 7
17 7.5 8
18 8.0 9
19 9.0 10
20 6.0 5

this was a killer run! 2.36 miles, max HR 184, average HR 162 (!!!) and calories burned 178.

i finished the workout off with 15 minutes of walking at 2.0 MPH and 15% incline. i alternated walking facing left, facing front and facing.  this is a fun way to mix up your treadmill moves. even though you are walking slow, you have to concentrate and your heart rate will actually stay pretty high. i burned an additional 135 calories in that short ime!  i ended my workout with a nice stretch.

dinner.

IMG_0058

leftovers! just as good the second time around.. if not better.

IMG_0062

a hearty bowl of my taco soup, topped with avocado, greek yogurt and sharp cheddar.

IMG_0063

check out my cute spoon! momma b brought it back from costa rica.

IMG_0061

i <3 owls. i <3 spoons. it just works.

IMG_0066

don’t you love him? he needs a name.

IMG_0067

i also had another side of normandy veggies. i am feeling very veggie today! i love this particular mix.  i buy it at costco.  i keep a bag at home AND at work! the perks of having a freezer at work, eh?

IMG_0060

perfect dinner.

we are about to take the pups for a walk and then i will probably make some sort of dessert.. i am thinking my pumpkin protein shake~ since i just bought three huge cans of libby’s pumpkin at costco!

Qs~

1. yogurt: do you prefer thick, creamy greek yogurt or runny regular yogurt? once you go greek.. it’s hard to go back. oikos has my heart.

2. do you eat in your car? truth be told, i often eat my snack (between lunch and dinner) in my car. it is usually an apple, protein shake or something portable.. but i have been known to eat yogurt messes complete with spoon while driving.

3. bright orange potato shaped vegetable: is it a sweet potato or a yam? i googled and i guess they are interchangeable. i say sweet potato.

maria @ Chasing the Now September 21, 2010 at 9:21 pm

I don’t know why, but he looks like a Herbert to me. I’ve grown to love owls in the last year, so I love that spoon.

kristastes September 21, 2010 at 9:23 pm

Hahaha I like Herbert, I was thinking Hootie.

I prefer greeeeek all the way. I totally eat in my car, who doesn’t? I just got legit sweet potatoes and they are white/yellow in the middle…but I call orange yams sweet potatoes as well :)

Lily @ Lily's Health Pad September 21, 2010 at 9:29 pm

In my experience it costs about the same to make your own Greek yogurt as it does to buy it premade. [sigh] The regular yogurt loses A LOT of water. You’d be surprised just how little Greek yogurt can be made from one large Stonyfield carton.

Julia September 21, 2010 at 9:36 pm

I <3 your owl spoon!

I prefer greek yogurt :)

I eat in my car fairly frequently (usually because I'm running between home and classes or the like).

And I call it a sweet potato.

Patricia Braithwaite September 21, 2010 at 9:38 pm

I LOVE greek yogurt. I can’t even eat the other stuff anymore. I haven’t tried alot of different brands. I mainly eat Chobani. I have to say I had never even tried it until I started reading your blog.
I do like sweet potatoes but I don’t buy them very often. I’ll have to change that!

crunchygranolagal September 21, 2010 at 9:42 pm

i am still trying to get into the idea of liking the sweet potato (or is it yam?) + cottage cheese + nut butter combo. heck, i’m still trying to like cottage cheese. one day, maybe?

1. i go greek (ha) when the wallet allows, and regular when i’m feeling stingy. i’m also really into the activia yogurts for um, health reasons. cough.

2. i eat while riding the subway ALL the time, which is guess is the nyc equivalent answer to your question :)

3. i’m sticking with sweet potato. it just feels right. hmmm.

Jocelyn @ Peace.Love.Nutrition September 21, 2010 at 9:43 pm

I’m a Greek yogurt fan over here! I love the creamy texture.

I’m the worst driver- so I don’t eat in the car. But luckily I hardly ever drive since I live in NYC : )

i LOVE sweet potatoes and yams! Someone once told me that yams were actually sweeter…don’t know if thats true though—-I should google it haha

xo

mom September 21, 2010 at 9:48 pm

I now love the sweet potato (oh my gosh I can NEVER spell that word right haha it makes me so nervous!) because ms janetha g introduced me to it. I also only love greek yogurt also because of ms meals and moves – thanks for putting me on the healthy track!

I like Herbert or Hootie or Chobiani?!?! The spoon is very cute. Have a good night xoxo!

Allie (Live Laugh Eat) September 21, 2010 at 10:11 pm

I get regular plain yogurt from time to time and I find that I like it better than I think in my head. Of course I like Greek better but it has a milky ish taste to it that’s pretty delicious.

Your owl spoon is adorbs.

I say sweet potato. Yam is too…I dunno….JAM PAM BAM (I have no idea haha).

actorsdiet September 21, 2010 at 10:13 pm

i just bought that yogurt too. haven’t opened it yet. am not happy to hear it’s runny. i like it thick! that’s what she said, indeed.

Melina Braithwaite September 21, 2010 at 10:26 pm

Oddly enough I hate Greek yogurt, but love my yogurt thick. Thank you yoplait for making thick and creamy! I must say I can’t get on this sweet potato bandwagon. Not so good!

A pumpkin protein shake sounds awesome though! I might just have to try that, if I can find pumpkin!

How bout Hannah for the spoon! Taking after our fantastic school!

Heather September 21, 2010 at 11:07 pm

I used to only buy Greek yogurt on special “treat myself” occasions, but then I started to like it waaaaaaaaaay better than regular so I just buy the Dannon Natural plain or vanilla yogurt and strain it overnight in the fridge. It really doesnt’ take much time to throw a coffee filter in a strainer and plop the yogurt in there! Don’t know why in the world I didn’t start doing this years ago!

I almost always get hungry while running errands and such so I drop an apple or a Lara Bar in my purse before I go out so I have something to munch on with the hungry bug bites!

I say definitely a sweet potato! Guess it depends on where your from…like how we say “Coke” in the south and it pretty much means any soda type beverage, but up north they call it “pop”…what is that anyways?! Haha!

I will have to try your cottage cheese/sunflower butter combo…looks yummy! Oh and LOVE the owl spoon! He’s soooooo cute! ;)

edenseats September 21, 2010 at 11:14 pm

First off, do they really sell Libbys cans at costco???? how did I miss that!? I’m still searching for Libby’s at the “normal” grocery store without success.
Anyhow, I do eat in the car, more than I’d like. I wont eat a meal, but I snack. When I was working full time, I used to get a giant fro yo, park, blast the heater and just have a little moment of zen with nelson (my car, yes I’m that pathetic that I named it). Good times.
And I’m with ya on the thickness. i’m the same way with cottage cheese. I hate which its watery and runny, ew…fat free.

Heather September 21, 2010 at 11:36 pm

I love Chobani (I haven’t tried Oikos) we have greek yogurt sold where I live, but he main brand is high in fat (around 10% M.F.) much higher than traditional greek yogurt [Phage] which is traditionally lower in fat! My boyfriend can attest that I go greek yogurt crazy when we visit the States, because of the selection!!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) September 22, 2010 at 12:24 am

some sites will say a sweet tater and a yam are interchangeable but ive been in foodie circles that claim they are not. honestly, it’s one of those things i never can keep straight. and when i go to the groc store, they have separate signs and prices for each. i dunno, i dont get it. LOL

that owl spoon is TOO CUTE!!!!!

I used to eat in my car but honestly I dont enjoy the food, i feel like im scarfing it down, and i feel like my driving sucks when im concentrating on the food..which i dont enjoy that much anyway…so i just wait to get where im going unless im dying of course :)

your comment today on tats, loved it. And so ironic b/c of course, marshall is so well inked. And you hate them. I knew that and actually have thought of that little factoid many times the past 6 mos or so that ive known it..

xo

Lauren September 22, 2010 at 12:33 am

Great Blog!

I say Kumara! (NZ call sweet potato) and a yam would be one of the wee ones (about 5cm long) with wrinkles on them… Funny how there are so many names for the same thing!

MelissaNibbles September 22, 2010 at 2:32 am

I can’t tell yams and sweet taters apart. Do they have the same nutritional stats?

I love me some thick Greek yogurt. I like to put it in the freezer for a few minutes then pretend it’s ice cream :)

Mary (A Merry Life) September 22, 2010 at 3:33 am

Love the owl spoon! It’s totally cute. My mom collects owl related things so I want to get her something like that.

I’m a greek yogurt fan now, but it took a while to convert me.

I don’t eat in my car because I don’t have a car anymore! But I rarely ate in my car before, just during long road trips.

Sweet potato.

susan September 22, 2010 at 3:56 am

Haha I LOVE that spoon. And I’m pretty sure there is a difference between yams ans sweetpotatos, but I have absolutely no clue what it is!

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is September 22, 2010 at 4:36 am

Definitely greek! I can’t do other yogurt.

April September 22, 2010 at 4:38 am

I bought 5 cans of pumpkin :) I’ll give your shake a try soon!

Yogurt is the devil!!!

No eating in my car.

Orange = sweet potato. Yams are more yellow. I’ve done my investigation.

Lauren September 22, 2010 at 4:39 am

I definitely am a Greek Yogurt snob too. Every time I go back to regular, I long for the thick luscious consistency of Greek.

I still have yet to try cottage cheese on a sweet potato but I do believe you that this combo rocks. You have yet to steer me wrong. :)

Erica September 22, 2010 at 4:44 am

Hi Janetha! How are you today? Hope your Wednesday is off to a good start. Love the looks of that sweet potato. I had one last night. I always forget how delicious they are. And your leftover soup rocks. Avocado on top? Yes please. Adorable spoonage.

1. yogurt: do you prefer thick, creamy greek yogurt or runny regular yogurt? I like both! I prefer regular in my parfaits and greek alone or to top dishes

2. do you eat in your car? Sometimes! Especially if its a particularly busy day and I have to teach. Snackage is required

3. bright orange potato shaped vegetable: is it a sweet potato or a yam?sweeeeeet potato

balancejoyanddelicias September 22, 2010 at 4:46 am

1. Once I met greek yogurt, anything else is just bad ;)
2. I snack at car often… yesterday i finished a bag of pecans driving to school :(
3. I like Yam’s texture much more!!! :D

lindsay September 22, 2010 at 4:55 am

i’m totally with saying sweet potato but I do say yams at thanksgiving. Oh well, glad to know they are the same.
I just made that same concoction last night but with tahini butter, cottage cheese, and spicy ketchup. Can’t beat it!!

Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) September 22, 2010 at 5:58 am

Cute spoon!

Texture wise, I love greek yogurt. But lately I have been rolling with the non-dairy thing so I’ve had to get used to the whole goat yogurt thing… it’s growing on me!

I always eat in my [the] car. When I had a car, I always had breakfast or a snack in the car. Now I usually have breakfast in the husband’s car on the way to work!!

Sweet potatoes. The white ones are yams!

xo
Kris

Di September 22, 2010 at 6:06 am

Sweet potato for sure!

I never liked greek yogurt until I had Oikos. Something about Chobani just didn’t do it for me, but Oikos is good stuff. :)

I definitely snack in the car. Except when I’m in NH, where I’m pretty sure doing ANYTHING other than driving while you’re, well, driving, is illegal.

I need to make taco soup. The owl spoon is too cute. Let us know when he gets a name. ;)

Abby September 22, 2010 at 6:08 am

I was cracking up because 1) I love sweet potatoes with cottage cheese and almond butter and everyone thinks I’m nuts and 2) I always end up splitting the Justin’s nut butter packets open to ensure I get every last speck. For what it’s worth in the normalcy department, you’re not alone ;)

Always plain Oikos or Fage–I’m spoiled forever now and will go broke, but happy.
I sometimes eat breakfast in my car on the way to work. While I usually like to actually enjoy my meals, sometimes it just has to be done.

Sami September 22, 2010 at 6:11 am

thick, creamy, pineapple & strawberry chobani is my faveeee. i’ve been dying to try siggi’s!

i eat in my car ALLL the time. mostly on tuesdays though…i have work til 4, basketball from 4:30-5:30 and class from 6-8:45! yes, car eating is one of my specialties :D

sweet tater, for sure!

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine September 22, 2010 at 6:27 am

I read an article once that said TRUE sweet potatoes are only indigenous to South Africa and are therefore very rare- most of our “variations” are just variations on a yam. Not sure if that’s entirely true though!!

I’m not a big car eater, mainly because I’ve never had to be. I don’t have one at school, and when I’m home it’s usually for vacation!

Hope you have a great hump day!!

Beth @ 990 Square September 22, 2010 at 6:53 am

Your Justin’s story made me laugh! I may or may not have been caught at my desk licking a peanut butter jar! I just bought my first Justin’s for an upcoming trip to Florida…can’t wait to try it!

Tina September 22, 2010 at 6:56 am

I am really only into Greek yogurt these days as well. And THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I enjoyed some with my breakfast this morning. :D

Tamizn September 22, 2010 at 6:58 am

Soya yogurt is in between runny and thick so I guess I’m an inbetweener! Yes I sometimes eat in my car if the tummy is calling I don’t like to make it angry! SWEET POTATO for sure the dude in the shop needs to learn what his products are! ha ha x x

Talia @ Texasgunslinger September 22, 2010 at 7:04 am

Oh man, I never tried greek yogurt until Body-for-life and I’m officially hooked! I’m not sure I’ll ever try the other stuff. I mix in my own SF fixins to give it flavor and really love how thick and creamy it is.

I carry my food with me pretty much wherever I go, so yeah, it seems I’m always eating in the car. Nuts are a great, portable snack and don’t require paying a lot of attention to eat so I can drive:)

brandi September 22, 2010 at 7:09 am

aw, I love that spoon! PS: I saw some houndstooth chairs in the lobby of a hotel last month and thought of you :)

LOVE greek yogurt! But I’ll eat regular if that’s the only choice.

I do eat in the car. Not much, and if I’m eating something that needs two hands, I try to do that when Nick’s driving.

I say sweet potato!

TheKetchupDiaries September 22, 2010 at 7:15 am

Workout looks incredible! I am totally spoiled with yogurt too. I love what Stonyfield stands for, but even their Greek yogurt is so thin compared to Chobani. I also eat in my car and say sweet potato. Yams sound like something old people eat.

Also, I moved my blog and am having issues getting the word out to people. Not sure if you’ve seen this via Twitter or FB, but if not, I’m trying to hit up as many people as I can. http://theketchupdiaries.com will have to be re-added to any Readers, so that it is not directed to the old. Okay, sorry for leaving this in a comment…just trying to tell the readers I can think of off the top of my head!

Naomi(onefitfoodie) September 22, 2010 at 7:21 am

i eat at LEAST one of my 6 meals in the car…usually one is on the way to work when I work late! i always pack it in some tupperwares, have TONS of napkins in my car AND lots of plastic silverware ya know “just in case”

omg that owl spoon is TOO CUTE!!! I think you should name him Earl G (named just popped in and he looks like an Earl) hehe

umm I think that combo is HEAVENLY and after you posted it the first time you had it the next day that was what I was eating for one of my snacks! LOL love it so much!! i havent had sunflower seed butter in a while though!

SWEET POTATOES ALL THE WAY!

SassyRas September 22, 2010 at 7:22 am

How about we call the spoon “Spowl”…hahaha…too cute.
My favorite yogurt is Fage…and Yum to sweet potato.
It’s sweet potato to me because in Jamaica our yam is way, way different that her in america.

runningaroundnormal September 22, 2010 at 7:31 am

I eat in my car too much, too. Though I hate to because I hate crumbs!! If I eat in my car I almost always know that I need to vacuum the car soon LOL. Whether I do or not is another question…
I’m perplexed on the whole sweet potato/yam deal too.
Have a great day, Janetha!! :)

thedelicateplace September 22, 2010 at 7:32 am

1. i do the same thing with the justin’s packets!
2. i love that owl spoon, adorable :)
3. i always drink a smoothie on the way into work after my workout

Graze With Me September 22, 2010 at 7:34 am

Yes, of course your spoon needs a name and I have the perfect one. …Archimedes! (From the Sword & the Stone – I love that darn owl!)

I try not to eat in my car but lately I’ve been eating part of my breakfast while driving. I tend to gulp down my food when I drive which takes away the enjoyment factor.

I say sweet potato! “Yam” seem like a Thanksgiving-only term. I had a sweet potato with cottage cheese for lunch yesterday. I even thought about grabbing some Sunbutter for it since I’m a savory cottage cheese person (but you are too!!) and I just wasn’t sure…guess I should go for it!

Kristen September 22, 2010 at 7:52 am

*Your little owl spoon is super cute!! You could name him Bubo, (Clash of the Titans…I used to love that movie!)

*I’m a total Greek Yogurt convert. Chobani is my current favorite. I like to eat it on top of a banana scramble (thank you Ashley @ edible perspective!)

*I usually eat my pre-workout snack in my car between work and the gym, and it is typically a clif bar or something along those lines.

*Sweet potatoes…even if they are yams, I call them sweet potatoes. Mmmmmm, I’m going to have to try them the way you suggested!

lowandbhold September 22, 2010 at 8:40 am

I recently bought some non-Greek yogurt as well for my morning smoothies. I look at it and feel saddened by its runniness, so I haven’t eaten any plain. I’m spoiled by the thickness.

Love the owl spoon! Too cute!

Steph September 22, 2010 at 8:45 am

Hmm…the little owl guy looks like an Alfred to me, however Herbert is not a bad name choice either…have a good hump day!

Claire C September 22, 2010 at 9:29 am

That is the best spoon…EVER!! I have an owl tattoo on the top of my foot.I love owls:-) I call em sweet taters.hehe… My favorite yogurt is Siggi’s plain.Unfortunately, it’s not cheap.Oh,well:-)cc

denise September 22, 2010 at 9:35 am

I love the spoon! I think you should name him Owlfred.

april September 22, 2010 at 9:56 am

I eat a ton of meals in my car which isn’t good because I’m a messy eater!

Lisa September 22, 2010 at 10:27 am

Apparently I didn’t know the difference between a yam or sweet potato because I was buying both thinking they were all sweet potatoes. LOL I prefer sweet potatoes though.

Ashley @ Cupcakes & Combat Boots September 22, 2010 at 10:37 am

That taco soup looks so darn good. Definitely going to have to give that a shot…though it looks more like taco chili than soup! :)

I’m a Greek Yogurt Girl all the way…though I do often make my own by straining it, like you mentioned. It’s cheaper and tastes just as good (in my opinion).

And funny you mentioned eating in the car because just this morning I ate my pumpkin oats on the way to work. I was running late! Probably not the safest thing in the world but I make it work. :)

melissadishes September 22, 2010 at 11:52 am

I dig the owl spoon, so cute and fun!

I love Greek Yogurt and I have a hard time with the regular stuff when I eat it now. I’ve strained my own before, and I may be wrong, but what you strain off has little cals. So you get maybe 2 servings out of a 4 serving container of yogurt. Wouldn’t the end product have higher over-all calories for the 2 servings left than already made Greek Yogurt? Yeah, i’m a dork and I overthink everything.

I call it a sweet potato. And I love the cottage cheese and sweet potato combo. It’s not unusual for me to have that, but instead of the nutbutter on top, sprinkle slivered almonds or another nut on top.
In fact, I like to throw both cottage cheese and sweet potatoes in random things, haha!
