in meals

on august 18, 2008, the best little bean was born. (yes, i love the synchronicity of her birthday, 8-18-8.. in case you wondered.)

10-21-08 005

on october 21, 2008, we picked her up from the airport.

10-21-08 028

for me, it was love at first sight.

10-21-08 026

for marshall, it was love at first sight.

 10-21-08 025

even for randy dog, it was love at first sight.

10-21-08 038

today is penny’s birthday! she is two.

IMG_0332

for her first birthday, i made pupcakes. you can see the post about that here.

8-18-09 051

this year, i baked her a cake.

IMG_0353

cheesy birthday cake for your pup.

an original recipe by janetha g.

ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • enough milk to make “batter” consistency—i used skim milk

directions:

place all ingredients in a bowl. mix well.

IMG_0286

you will have spectators.

IMG_0350

pour into a greased 8” cake pan.

IMG_0290

bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. when it is done, it should be golden brown and a toothpick should come out clean after inserting into the middle of the cake.

IMG_0347

while the cake bakes, take an obscene amount of photos of the birthday girl. and of her brother, we wouldn’t want to leave anyone out.

IMG_0300 IMG_0313 IMG_0317 IMG_0326

once the cake has cooled a bit, place it on a plate.

IMG_0349

spread a nice layer of natural peanut butter on top.

IMG_0351

crunchy, if you want to make your pooch happiest.

IMG_0355

adorn the cake with a “P” (or the appropriate letter) made of cheese.

IMG_0354

sing to the birthday girl, while teasing her with the delicious cake.

IMG_0357

let them eat cake!

IMG_0375

randy looks like he is a little deprived here, doesn’t he?

IMG_0386

pretty sure he was drooling.

IMG_0387

poor randy dog, so picked on.

IMG_0389

don’t be fooled. he ate his fair share of cake.

IMG_0361

this was by far the best dog cake i have made!

IMG_0372

i usually follow recipes, but this time i made up my own.  marshall and i tasted it and agreed it was the best yet. it had a great, soft consistency and didn’t taste like cardboard. double score.

in honor of penelope’s birthday, i am giving away this cool organic dog treat cookbook/cookie cutter set! i snagged one for the birthday girl and decided to give one away to one of my dog-lovin’ readers.

IMG_0241

Happy birthday! Shes just as cute now as she was when she was a puppy…

I have Eddie, a 5 year old Shepherd Mix. I adopted him from the shelter when he was 1 and he was terrified of men. After 3 years, he loves everybody and is the kindest most gentle dog I’ve ever known. Without him, I don’t know where I’d be.

I have Milla a 2 year old mini doxie, whom I bought with Sean. I love her because she’s a prissy little bitch who is a big cuddler :)

Liz August 18, 2010 at 8:32 pm

happy birthday penelope!

I have a 4 year old Maltese named Berklee. I love everything about her but especially the fact that she’s decided she’s not a morning dog, just like I’m not a morning person. We can both snooze in as late as we want :)

VeggieGirl August 18, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Aww happy birthday to dear Penelope!

My dog is named Chooey. We rescued her after she was abandoned in a cardboard box in the woods when she was just a few weeks old. She has such a zest for life and is always full of energy – such a blessing.

Ashley August 18, 2010 at 8:34 pm

I have two dogs, both named after a video game; Morrowind. My golden retriever is named Vivec, while my border collie is named Daedra.

Thing I loved the most about Vivec is he always have fun on his head. He always – always – wants to play. He’s a crazy pooch, ball obsessed, that rarely, if ever, gets worn out. I adore his carefree attitude, even if he’s not as well-trained as I like. He still brings laughter daily into my life, so what more could I ask?

Daedra is the one that got me interested in dog sports, particularly obedience and agility. He’s so smart – so very intelligent, cunning and keen. Watching him, you can see him try to figure things out. His intelligence surprises me sometimes; he knows how to open doors, as well as close them, knows various words – you can’t say ‘ride’ without him perking and wanting to go – as well as various commands. He’s a lovely companion to have.

Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday August 18, 2010 at 8:42 pm

I have one dog named Bagigis. She’s an 18 month old cocker spaniel

andionthego August 18, 2010 at 8:46 pm

happy birthday Penelope! I have a beagle-husky mix named Guinness who’s just over a year old. he can be a monster, but I love him because he’s such a mama’s boy. :)

Nicole C August 18, 2010 at 8:51 pm

The loves of my life come in an extra large package and a tiny one.

Kronus is my 4 year old Italian Mastiff who has move energy than he knows what to do with. Always happy, especially to get a bath today which is a full body workout on it’s own. Towel tug of war, air dry while throwing a toy and running around like a mad man, lots of brushing. I never have to worry about being unsafe in my house. Plus, he gives full body hugs since he thinks he is small.

Roxy is my mini doxie whom is 5 big girl years old. She was born scared of the world. The last pup out of 2 litters and so tiny. The owner told me they never thought she would turn out so pretty…but who got Hot Dog of the Month in the Hot Diggity Dachshund Club, ROXY! She is in a calendar, she is a big deal. :) She is more like a cat and must be on my lap at all times. She warms my heart. She’s learned to hold her own, won’t eat without her big buddy. 120 lbs and 9 lbs they are a cool duo. I wish I could post a pic on here.

Happy Birthday Penelope Jane!!!

Mary (A Merry Life) August 18, 2010 at 8:52 pm

This is TOO cute. Happy birthday!

I’m going to look at puppies/dogs with Kepa today. I’ve never made a dog a birthday cake before, but now I’m totally going to. That’s a seriously fun idea. :)

sweetsbyalli August 18, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Aww, Happy Birthday sweet Penelope Jane! :)

I have a border collie/lab mix named Okie! Well, her full name is Okie Mae :) I love how everytime I come home she’s ready to give me a big hug and kiss (tricks she actually knows!), and without a doubt is a little genius! She actually knows a few Spanish words now haha !

simplyshaka August 18, 2010 at 8:54 pm

Gah, I love her. Happy Birthday Penelope!!!

I have my little Lincoln and as annoying as it is, I love how he is my shadow and follows me around all the time

Where did you find that set? I would love to get one for my friend.

Christin L. August 18, 2010 at 8:54 pm

Happy Birthday Penny!

I have Rambo, a (almost) 9 year old chiweenie and Lucy, an 8 1/2 year old 40 pound terrier mix. My dogs have oodles of personality and make me laugh every day. Lucy was abused before I got her, and she has come such a LONG way in the years I’ve had her. Rambo was my first dog that I got as an adult, and he is definitely a huge mama’s boy. They both are my heart and soul. <3

Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) August 18, 2010 at 8:55 pm

Happy birthday Penelope! That cake looks amazing!!!! you are such a great doggy mama Janetha!

The baby pictures of Penelope are making me want a puppy now. Andy and I don’t have one and I would love to change that ASAP!

Maren August 18, 2010 at 8:59 pm

Zeus is a Puggle. I love his wrinkles!!!

Ashley August 18, 2010 at 9:00 pm

Happy Birthday to your little bean!

I love that you call her bean- I call my little guy bean all the time! My pup,Russy is a frenchie/boston mix and I adore everything about him! He’ll be 3 on 9/4 and I might have to cook up Penelope’s Bday treat recipe for him- he would love it!

Marie August 18, 2010 at 9:03 pm

Happy birthday, Penelope! We have an almost four-year old Shih Tzu, named Saber. One of the things I love about him is how affectionate and cuddly he is.

Kristina August 18, 2010 at 9:06 pm

Happy Birthday to Penelope!

My little Pickles is a spaniel/dachshund mix and I love everything about him; especially when he’ll play fetch until he just tires out. :)

mom August 18, 2010 at 9:09 pm

Have to agree she’s a sweetheart and very well behaved—we had fun on our sleep over love you Penny bean!!!xoxo

Christine August 18, 2010 at 9:16 pm

I had to comment on Penelope Jane even before I saw that you are having a great giveaway. You know I have a Penny too and I love the way she groans at me first thing in the morning when I rub her tummy – I could swear she’s saying “Morning, mom….please, please, please don’t stop!” My other favorite thing she does is play patty cake – she taught herself that and she trained me to do it! Happy Birthday, Penelope Jane!!!

Nicole August 18, 2010 at 9:17 pm

Happy birthday to Miss Penny.

We have two Boston Terriors named Max (3) and Zack (2). Love them both to bits and pieces. And they are definitely getting your pup cake for their next birthdays! Looks fanastic.

Jacqueline August 18, 2010 at 9:31 pm

Happy Birthday Penny!
I have a terrier mix, Pookie and she know my routines. Every night when I take a shower, she lays by the bathroom door and when I get out, she hops in her bed which is right next to my side because she know’s I’m going to bed. I just loss my Jack Russell, Bo to cancer a just over 3 weeks ago but before that, I loved how he would “tell” me about his night every morning as I made coffee.

Jenn August 18, 2010 at 9:40 pm

Happy Birthday Penny!

I have 2 pugs, Nico and Nigel, and I love how wonderful they are with my children.

P.S. I think this just topped the list as my favorite post ever!

Ashley August 18, 2010 at 9:44 pm

My pups are astral and coda. They are 1 1/2 year old yorkie/jack russel littermates. The best thing I love about my dogs is when I try and punish them in my scariest voice ever, they still wags their tails at me… Pretty sure they are thinking “you so silly mom”.

Kelly August 18, 2010 at 10:29 pm

Happy Birthday Penny Jane! What a cutie…must take after her mom ;)
My baby Nick Is almost 2 years old too. Hes a black lab catahula hound mix and is THE BEST DOG EVER. He follows me EVERYWHERE and won’t follow any commands unless i give them.

Sara @ Nourish and Flourish August 18, 2010 at 10:46 pm

Penny is one lucky birthday pup! You were so sweet to make a cake! I feel like a negligent owner because I usually only give my dog a fried egg or piece of turkey on her birthday!

BUT, maybe I can redeem myself with some homemade organic dog biscuits? I hope so!

Cali is my 7-year-old yellow lab, and she’s the love of my life. She’s always “smiling,” and will pant in my face until I roll out of bed in the morning. She’s like a doggy breath alarm clock! (It does the job btw). :-D

chasingcasey August 18, 2010 at 11:23 pm

Happy Birthday Penny!

My dog is my little jewish princess. Her name is Kodi, but I call her Kodilah. She’s an english chocolate lab who loves to run in our backyard and sniff on the trails by our house. What I love about her is how soft she is and even when I’m not having a good day, or don’t want to go for a walk or be bothered; she is the one person who can bother me to snap out of it.

eatbakebabysit August 19, 2010 at 12:39 am

Your pups look adorable! Happy Birthday to Penelope :) My dog’s birthday just passed and I didn’t get to bake her a cake. I’ll try your recipe some time this weekend to make up for it! Oh, and I have an American Eskimo named Mimi. She’s my little baby and I love her to death. The best quality about her is that she’ll always know if you’re feeling sad/upset and will always come to you and try to make you feel better. She’s like the… human whisperer. Haha!

TorontoGirloutWest August 19, 2010 at 1:19 am

I have a shihtzu-bichon (likely part Maltese) cross that is the love of my puppy life. Her name is Daisy and I love everything about her……from the way she hugs me (paws on either side of my neck) and licks me when I’m upset to the way she wags herself off course with excitement when the Fiance gets home.

I  my little puppy! 

MelissaNibbles August 19, 2010 at 2:52 am

I don’t have a dog so I don’t want to enter the giveaway, but I have to say that these puppy pictures are making my ovaries cry. I WANT A PUPPY DAMNIT! Give me one Lord pleeeaaase!!!! If I had one I would name him Bunk after Bunk on The Wire and in my mind he would walk around swearing in his puppy mind at people that annoy him.

Happy Birthday to Penelope Jane.

April August 19, 2010 at 4:16 am

You know I LOVE this post :) I don’t even know when Boomers bday is. We just say it’s Dec 1st. She’ll be 11 this year :(

She is border collie/black lab and I love when she gives me hugs!

Laura August 19, 2010 at 4:29 am

awww happy birthday Penny! I have a pup called Roxie, she is a german shepherd springer spaniel cross and has just had her 4 month birthday!

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is August 19, 2010 at 4:39 am

Lauren August 19, 2010 at 4:49 am

WOw, miss Penelope is turning into one beautiful lady! I can’t beleive she is 2!!! Happy Happy Happy Birthday to her! ;)

Right now, we’ve got two little loves in our home.
Sammy is our 3 year old Chihuahua and we our puppy sitting my parents’ 1 year old Chihuahua.

lindsay August 19, 2010 at 4:51 am

hehe, happy birthday penelope! I was wondering if you actually tried the cake. It looke darn good to me. We have Sadie, our precious black lab. She just turned 5, crazy!! Oh how they grow up fast. I sometime make her oatmeal for breakfast, I know, I spoil her. :)

Johnna August 19, 2010 at 5:15 am

Happy Birthday to Penelope!! My wonderful cockapoo, named Abraham Lincoln, will be 2 next Saturday – 8-28-08 – also a nice ring to it, eh? He’s a red headed cockapoo with a heart the size of San Francisco. I love him so much my heart hurts.
Our other boy is Sebastian Benjamin Brigham – a really big name for a not so big shih tzu/yorkie mix. He has balls of steel though – bring on them big dogs anyday! He turned four in June. For his first birthday we had a huge party and I made homemade dog treats in individual ‘doggie bags’ for all the doggie guests!

I love the way they interact with each other – loving, fighting, teasing, chasing – but I mostly love just cuddling on the couch with them or trying to work out while they crawl all around me. They are such a joy!

Erica August 19, 2010 at 5:20 am

ohhhhh my cuteness! happy birthday sweet penelope jane! Your mama rocks for making you such a great cake. I just love it. You know what I have- a fatty bulldog named Frank ;)

Abby August 19, 2010 at 5:29 am

Ahhh! The pictures in the post made my morning! I also love the synchronicity of her birthday, as mine is 8-1-81 and I weighed 8lbs 1 oz. No joke. I was going to comment before I saw you had a great giveaway at the end!

Anyway, pet birthdays are just as important in my family as people birthdays–decorations and all! We have Chauncey right now, and he turned four in October. He was a rescue, so we can’t be exactly sure what he is. It’s part jack russell terrier and chihuahua we think. At any rate, he’s like a little person. Plus, he’s so awesome to take to the old people’s home where my grandma is. Everyone loves him!

Happy Birthday Penelope Jane!

Tina August 19, 2010 at 5:35 am

Awww so cute! Happy bday to Penelope Jane!

Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) August 19, 2010 at 5:36 am

Aww, Happy Birthday Penelope!

You guys are the greatest fur-parents :D

Can I enter for my parents’ dog (he was pretty much mine anyway!)? His name is Kahlua and he is turning 2 soon. I love how playful he is! And how he always remembers me when I come home, even if I’ve ben away for months :D

i don’t have a dog, but i often sit for a wheaten terrier, shitzu, springer doodle, and a mutt (just not all at once!) :) I’ll have to keep this cake in mind the next time i make goodies for them!

Kellie August 19, 2010 at 6:28 am

Hey Janetha! We have THREE dogs at our house. (we would have more, but I think this is our LIMIT… LOL)
Chloe is 2.5 year old bulldog. Love her to peices… she is like a furry two year old (and all that entails)
Nugget is the old lady… she is almost 11. Pretty sure the only thoughts running through her head are “i’m a dog i’m a dog i’m a dog”. but I love her anyway :)
My mom lives with us, and her dog is a lhasa/poo mix. Mitzi is 8. I love how she is so dang bossy! She’s the smallest, but she doesn’t let that stop her!
And, just thought I’d add, what I love most about your blog is HOW MUCH YOU LOVE YOUR DOGS :O)
Have a great day!

thedelicateplace August 19, 2010 at 6:35 am

ahhh penny as a pup melts my heart! adorable. now i’m google imaging beagle pups haha. work productivity thanks janetha! i’ve always wanted a pup but i can’t convince nate to cave. he’s a cat person and they kinda make my eyes all scratchy so unless i get a hypo allergenic cat lol i doubt it will be happening ;p

apartmentnearchinatown August 19, 2010 at 6:59 am

I love, love dogs but I am slightly allergic to them :( So, in April of 2004, my parents got an itty bitty baby boy toy poodle! After my brothers and I racked our brains for a name (vetoing anything close to “Fluffy” or “Marshmallow”) we decided on ZEUS!

Zeus is an 8-pound happy boy and we love him so much! He loves cuddling, treats, my mom, and did I mention cuddling? Precious boy :)

Happy Birthday, Penny!!

christine August 19, 2010 at 7:13 am

AH! Happy Birthday Penelope!!!
We had an adoption day party for my pup, Ernesto a few weeks ago (since we don’t really know when his birthday is) – we invited all of his puppy friends over for a mega-romp around my parents back yard (theirs is fenced in). We even got to meet two of the siblings from his litter!
I’m definitely going to have to keep this recipe in mind for Ernesto…he’d LOVE it!

Mallory August 19, 2010 at 7:40 am

i must make that cake!
my little baby’s birthday is august 29th so you have impeccable timing with this recipe :)

she’s a shih-tzu named mika (meeka) and she is pretty much awesome… i love so many things about her, but my favorite just has to be the fact that when she lays in bed with me she ALWAYS goes up to the top of the bed and lays on a pillow next to me. never just curls up by my feet like when we’re on the couch/floor/etc… when she’s on the bed she’s on a pillow. high maintenance little girl she is…

Danielle C. August 19, 2010 at 8:20 am

I don’t have a dog yet but this is for my future dog (hopefully soon!) which will be either an Alaskan Malamute or a Siberian Husky. :)

Love the Penelope and Randy pics <3

LG August 19, 2010 at 8:35 am

I love your dogs. I don’t have any myself but my folks have a Corgi, Hanna. She is SO CUTE!

Patricia Braithwaite August 19, 2010 at 8:37 am

So cute! I loved all of the pics of the dogs. They are so lucky to have such loving “parents”. Nice job on the cake!

Jessica August 19, 2010 at 8:37 am

What a sweet sweet post. Jeff and I have our puppy Harley, she is a 12 years old lab/german sheppard mix. We addopted her when we first started dating.

Harley has been with us through everything, dating, college, long 13 hour car rides to see our parents, 3 apartmemts, establishing our jobs, getting married, buying our first house, having our little baby Jake (they are best buds!) & buying our second house.

I love that you love your puppies. This post made me cry. Harley was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in April. They gave her 2 weeks – 4 months. She is still going, she has slowed down quite a bit and is taking 4 pills a day for pain and swelling. We are taking it day by day. But, she still meets us at the door with her toy and her wagging tail EVERY SINGLE DAY! We love our baby girl and she loves us with unconditional and reckless abandon! She is the best thing ever! I encourage everyone with a pet to take some extra time to enjoy them – you just never know.

Happy Birthday Penny!!!!

Erika August 19, 2010 at 8:45 am

Happy Birthday Penny! When it is my dog, Fluffy’s, birthday we pick up a hamburger from McDonalds, sing, and let her eat it. She loves it! LOL! :-)
I am such a dog-person!

Freckled Foodie August 19, 2010 at 8:46 am
