i am probably on the road to arizona right now. or, more likely, i am scrambling around doing last minute things.. trying to get out the door and on the road.. because, no matter where i am going, i am rarely on time.
marshall hates this about me. yet, he married me anyway. that’s true love, people.
dad’s birthday shenanigans!
as i mentioned, yesterday was my dad’s birthday. the big 9 – 5!
oh wait.. no.. the big 5 – 9!
dear old dad requested chicago dogs, complete with all the fixings, for his birthday dinner. and whatever the birthday guy wants, the birthday guy gets! momma b & i had no idea what “all the fixings” entailed, so we turned to wikipedia.. although i suppose i could have turned to mara! that gal knows her chicago dogs.
anyway, wikipedia said this:
A Chicago-style hot dog is a steamed or water-simmered, kosher-style, all-beef frankfurter[1][3] on a poppy seed bun,[4] originating from the city of Chicago, Illinois. The hot dog is topped with yellow mustard, chopped white onions, sweet pickle relish (often a dyed neon-green variety, sometimes called piccalilli[5]), a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt.[1][6][7][8] The complete assembly of a Chicago hot dog is said to be "dragged through the garden" because of the unique combination of condiments.[9][10]
perfect.
instead of boiling them, we grilled the dogs. we also grilled chicken for the anti-hot dog people (aka me and my sister in law.)
customary poppyseed buns.
while the dogs & chicken cooked, my dad made fresh squeezed lemonade with a *hint* of lime.
the lime matches his shirt!
it was seriously delicious. too bad it hurt my geographic tongue and i couldn’t drink much :(
we also had watermelon & corn as side dishes. yum and yum.
here was momma b’s chicago dog:
and my chickenago dog:
it was so dang good! i have never thought to top a chicken breast with hot dog fixings. definitely a great idea.
i managed to capture several corn addicts in the act!!
we love corn in our house.
there was one hot dog creep..
and one hysterical momma b. love this shot.
after our bellies were full of dinner, we sang happy birthday and candles were wished upon.
then, before the cake was devoured, it was time for presents!
he was super happy about the real vermont maple syrup marshall & i got him ;)
then.. CAKE! my mom makes a FANTASTIC red velvet cake. from scratch. she’s quite the baker.
i ate around the frosting and picked out just the cake part. i am not a frosting gal.
i’’ll be back next time with another honeymoon recap! take it easy, friends.
Qs~
1. hotdogs: love them or hate them? i am not a fan. the only time i will eat one is when camping, but even then.. i don’t prefer them. i just hate the way they taste. i do love bratwurst!
2. favorite kind of cake? i am not really a cake person.. i am all about the ice cream. but if i had to pick.. i would say the almond cake with blackberry filling that was served at my wedding. excellent.

aww happy birthday to your dad! and just read your honeymoon update! so so so fun!!! i love the pics and isn’t parasailing SO fun?!?! I loved it! HATE hot dogs blehh I dont knwo why but hate them!!
cake?!?! ice cream all the way! but if I had to eat sheet cake then it would haev buttercream frosting!
I think hot dogs can be quite delicious but they don’t sit well in my belly.
Favorite kind of cake is my mom’s! :) It’s not really a “kind” but it has like a lemony frosting (whole yogurt with lemons and sugar), walnuts, and strawberries on top. Yum!
Habby bday to your dad! :)
It’s pretty funny because I am a serious baker…yet I don’t really eat cake. My favorite cake is actually cheese cake! Although, I do make a delicious dark chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting!
Happy Birthday to your dad! Looks like you all had a great time!
How funny that you grilled chicken for the “anti-hot dog” people… :) I actually think I would have made a “chickenago dog” as well as I’m not a big hot dog fan..
The red velvet cake looks and sounds amazing! I’m so not good at baking, but the toddler has become obsessed with fancy birthday cakes (in the shape of a pony, or a fire truck, or a farm), so I’m really afraid I’ll disappoint him on his birthday… I think I should start practicing…
Happy Birthday to your dad!
I am not a hot dog or cake person. I like veggie dogs okay, but I don’t know when the last time I had a real hot dog was – maybe like 20 years ago!
Happy Birthday Mr. B!! It looks as though you guys all had a blast – I agree ….that picture of Momma B is so cute!
If you’d asked the hotdog question pre-pregnancy I would’ve said BLECH to hotdogs, but for some odd reason I’ve had cravings for them recently. Haven’t satisfied that craving yet, because I don’t like the idea of eating “mystery meat.”
Cake – German Chocolate (coconut…uhhhhhh a la Homer Simpson complete with drool)
What a great b-day celebration for your dad!
ALWAYS sausage before hotdogs for me. I only like veggie dogs. Real ones freak me out!
I’m not a huge cake fan too, unless it is ice cream cake… but I do love a good slice of strawberry shortcake!!
xo
Kris
Aww, happy birthday to your dad!! :) He looks so happy and I love the grilled dogs idea!
PS- I think this camera is even better than your last one. Awesome pictures! :)
Oh that party looks too fun!! I love family birthdays. Not a hotdog fan either. I like real sausage/bratwurst as well. Big chunk of fatty meat, yes please. haha.
Cake, hmmmm…..not a cake fan either since I can’t eat gluten. I’d choose GF bread pudding with ice cream over cake any day.
Safe travels!
Omg, for a second I really thought your dad was 95! Yeah, I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed… haha! ;) What a fun b-day party for your pops! I love hot dogs, but hate that they’re supposed to so bad for us. At least there are healthier versions available. I’m SUCH a cake person!! I looooove corner slices with lots and lots of icing!! I loved our wedding cake. It had raspberry filling and the most amazing buttercream frosting… mmmmmmm, I can still taste it!!
Aw- looks like fun! I’m not a dog or cake person either. I prefer ice cream of frozen yogurt. Glad you guys had fun. Josh is totally last minute too. I think Marshall and I are here to balance ya’ll out ;)
I’m flippin’ out over that Red Velvet Cake! Yum^2!!! My mom also makes the most incredible Red Velvet cake from scratch, but hers has coconut in it, which I luuuurve! Gosh, that may be my first post-competition food I devour, now that I think of it! :) Gosh, I don’t know how you don’t like cake icing HA! I could eat icing all by itself, but that would be bad:)
Have a safe and fun trip to Arizona!
Talia:)
Happy birthday to daddyo!
I loooove all the shots of you and your family eating. Priceless.
And a chicken hot dog?! Perfect!
and yes, I LOVE hots dogs and no I’m not a cake fan!
Happy 59 to dad!
I like hotdogs, but I am VERY picky about the type and will only eat them at home, never from anywhere public.
Cake. I used to love ALL cake. In the last few years, I became a total food snob, so I actually don’t eat every cake I come across. I go for the yummy high quality stuff. My absolutely favorite cake at a restaurant is Tres Leches (chocolate or vanilla, they are both awesome), from Paloma Blanca in San Antonio. I plan to eat a slice of it after every SA marathon I run (my 3rd will be in November). That’s probably the only day i’ll burn enough cals to cover it, if even then!
I eat cake at weddings if it looks awesome, same goes for other special occasions.
1. Only grilled. And only about once a year.
2. CARROT CAKE<3
My husband is from Chicago and LOVES what he has always called Kitchen Sink Hotdogs. Happy Birthday to your dad!
hahaha oh my god your dad matched his drink to his shirt totally on purpose!!!!
happy birthday papa!!
I’m a Chicago native and let me tell ya — those dogs you made look spot on! Yum!
HAPPYYYYYYY BIRTHDAY TO YOUR DADDY!!!
yay!! that is hilarious that he requested DAWGS! I do NOT like hot dawgs!!! Im more of a burger girl! id totally go with the grilled chicken too!
Wow!!! You look so much like your father it’s amazing :D I love when people and their parents look a lot alike. It’s almost like a miracle right in front of your eyes. Anyway, happy birthday to your dad! Your family is bursting with personality. This whole post had me smiling :D And major kudos to your mom for baking that cake out of scratch. It turned out beautifully!
1. I am also not a hot dog fan. When I was younger and became a picky eater when I moved to the states… I remember my mom taking me to the doctor to see what could be done to help. He said “Feed her french fries and hot dogs. Kids like that stuff.” Uh… not me. I was coming from Germany where my “hot dogs” were grilled bratwurst with the most delicious curry-ketchup.
2. I’m not a big cake fan, but I will make the exception for tiramisu and carrot cake. However, I’m reallllly picky about the tiramisu. If it’s made with whipped cream or cream cheese.. forget about it. It’s all about the mascarpone! I don’t want imitation anything lol.
XOXO

happy birthday to your papa! My dad’s bday is actually just around the corner on Monday, so we’ll be having a similar celebration soon.
1. Oddly enough, hot dogs (and tuna fish) were the hardest things for me to give up when I went veg. Weird, right? Now I don’t really crave them at all–I’ve had the same package of veggie dogs in the freezer for like years.
2. I’m not a cake fan either, although you and I would make a good combo–I hate cake itself but I like frosting. Invite me to your next bday party?
Even though I’m vegetarian now, I’ve never really liked hot dogs. They bring back memories of club soccer games where I was not in the mood to eat anything warm afterwards. I haven’t tried more than one imitation, but the Tofurkey ones were just not good.
I like cake, but I love the frosting the most! And I love ice cream, but I love the add-ins the most….sorry desserts. I’m a weirdo!
I don’t like hotdogs AT ALL.
I am the opposite of you on the cake/frosting issue however. I LOVE frosting but I don’t normally like cake…now brownies are a different story. =)
Hot dogs: no. I never really have liked them, and since I’ve become more health conscious, I’ve liked them less. I’d always prefer a good burger/chicken.
That cake looks amazing. I love cheesecake, does that count as cake?
1. I can take or leave hotdogs. Brats are another story. LOVE them. But I’ll take a burger any day of the week.
2. Janetha, you KNOW how much I love my cake. Any cake. But particularly carrot cake :)
Have an awesome trip and happy 95th, I mean 59th, to your Dad!
I do enjoy a good hot dog even once in a blue moon but they have to be the small kind, like ballpark style. I don’t like the really big ones..wow that sounds bad!
I prefer cupcakes and I’m known to make some pretty wicked cool ones for kids birthday parties. I’m a red velvet girl myself though, or root beer float!
I kinda love cake. Actually, I kinda love frosting and can take or leave the cake (usually). We could share cake like champs :-)
janetha, I never comment, but always read, anyway, I just had to say that the picture of your mum laughing is an incredibly beautiful picture, really really gorgeous, I was moved to comment by that alone!
Happy 59th!!!
The corn looks great and your family looks very happy and loving :)
Happy Birthday to your father! His birthday meal looked awesome! And so did your Chicken-dog! I never thought to do that either but I am going to try it! I love hot dogs…wish I didn’t! We always buy the Hebrew National though. I am picky about which ones I will eat. And cake-count me in! Love it all-once again, wish I didn’t. I like a lot of foods that I shouldn’t because they are horrible for ya! Moderation is the key, right? ;)
I also follow the no-hot-dogs-unless-camping rule. And then HAVE to be all-beef.
I’m more of an ice cream person too but I love Ida Gartner’s lemon yogurt cake and the almond raspberry cake at Market Street Grill. mmmm….
do you have a recipe for the cake?!? red velvet is my hubby’s favorite, and i want to make one for his birthday this weekend. i’ve printed a few recipes, but that one looks REALLY delicious!!
I like a really good all-beef hot dog that’s been slow-roasted but I can’t even remember the last time I had one. I usually eat one at OU football games for good luck, but I was a vegetarian last football season. This is probably why we had such a terrible year, haha.
I love Red Velvet cake, but my mom makes a champagne cake that is the bomb. I love it.
So glad your Dad had a good birthday, your family looks like so much fun!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY POPPA B! :) Looks like you all had a great time!
I used to LOVE red velvet cake. My Nana (godmother) used to make red velvet cupcakes for me at my birthday every year as a special treat. I don’t eat them anymore, because they give me such a bad sugar crash, but it was fun while it lasted! :)
I’m not really a cake girl either, but seeing as my birthday is coming up August 21st, I requested a vitacake from the vitatop company! Super pumped for that bad boy. Other than that, probably Carrot Cake?
As for the hot dogs, I don’t like regular ones, but Hebrew National 97% FF are decent! Probably because they don’t taste like a hot dog. Haha. I’m a fan of chicken sausages!
LOVE hot dogs, but I try not to eat them too often for obvious reasons. My favorite kind of cake is homemade chocolate zucchini cake… delish!
Ooh, that Red Velvet cake looks delicious! I have never had Red Velvet cake (only Red Velvet flavored ice cream) so my favorite type of cake is white cake or Funfetti! Yum!
Yum! All of that looks spectacular. Well done.
Living in Chicago has made me love the Chicago style hot dog. We even have a t-shirt to help people remember that “You Never Put Ketchup On A Hot Dog”.
I love hot dogs. Hebrew National 97% Fat Free are really good. The only lowfat ones I like. Chicago dogs are great. Chili dogs are great. Luv em all.
Cake. Not so much. I’ll eat a celebrations but just not a big cake lover.
that looks like such a fun day! I laughed when I saw the “hot dog creep”
I love the picture of your mom laughing….
Happy Birthday to your Dad!!!
My favorite cake would have to be carrot cake and I am totally a frosting girl : )
Aw I love all of these pictures. You have such a cute family! :)
Happy birthday, pappa b. :)
I only like organic hot dogs on occasions. The other stuff freaks me out. I think it’s a great idea to top chicken with all the fix-ins. That’s the best part anyway!
Favorite cake? Something russian my mom makes. They’re all amazing.
I can not believe you have geographic tongue! I have that two and have never met anyone else with it or willing to admit it!
I’m NOT a hot dog person. I haven’t had a hot dog probably in like 15yrs! However, I did eat my fare share as kid. One summer when I worked at a day care on hot dog day, I made a banana and p.b. dog. IT was GOOD!! I’m also not a cake person…..bring on the ice cream!!!!
Aww! Happy Bday papaB!! I can’t believe you got the hot dogs pretty much down to a T. Your family rocks. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again!
After my hot dog adventure, i’m definitely more picky about them now! I really only like the good ones :) Happy b-day to your dad! My dad just turned 59 too :)
Looks like a fun day and I love his lime shirt! My dad likes to rock the lime, pink, etc, and I just think that’s awesome.
I am not a huge cake person. Edit, if you put cake in front of me, I will probably eat it but would never crave cake. I like ice cream cheese or cheesecake.
Hot dogs are wonderful, I love them!!
happy bday to your pops!
i love corn – haven’t had nearly enough of it this year….fave cake? i don’t discriminate. i will eat pretty much anything with frosting.
Your family just seems so fun loving! Yumm to everything, but especially the corn and the red velvet cake!
1. I am a hot dog person about once a year. I LOVE a good quality hot dog in the summer :)
2. Red velvet, carrot, or German chocolate :) Total cake person right here ;)
Definitely would rather have a brat than a hot dog. This family get together looks like soo much fun- everyone is so happy!
