art & soup.

in meals,moves

sorry to boggle your minds with my last post.  i know that last post was a little over the top when it came to numbers and whatnot.

this post should be quite the opposite.  it is late, i’ve got bags of frozen peas on my ankles and my whole entire body is so sore to the point where i can only move my fingers (to type) and nothing else.  let’s just say the insanity dvds live up to their name.

before i ramble on about today, i think EVERYONE should go check out mama pea’s post on doing body for life the vegan way.  i know someone who would be very interested.  i could probably attempt to do a day of BFL vegan.. but truth be told, it would take some crafty analysis and probably require the purchase of some vegan protein powders.. not something i am in the position to do at the moment. read: funds are tight ;)  SO.. for now, frolic on over and read mrs. pea’s post. it’s a good one.

meals

did you guys remember that today was national waffle day AND national pecan day??  i did. and breakfast was a reflection of that!

meal 1: protein waffle + maple pecan butter @ 9:00 AM

IMG_8456

i used my usual protein waffle recipe (i did 1/3 of the batch) and topped it with a tablespoon of homemade maple pecan nut butter that the oh-so-fabulous susan sent me.

this batch of waffles turn out just perfect!

IMG_8458

must have been the luck of the national food holiday ;)

IMG_8457

365 calories, 15g fat, 25g carbs, 36g protein

breakfast was definitely fat-heavy.. but the maple pecan nut butter was worth the extra fat grams~ plus, it was healthy fats!

meal 2: dijon eggs! + toast, tomatoes & laughing cow @ 12:30 PM

IMG_8471

maybe not the prettiest sight.. but this tasted awesome!  i have been meaning to try lauren’s method of topping eggs with dijon mustard.  um, YUM!

4 egg whites, 1 oz diced turkey, annie’s dijon mustard.

IMG_8468

i ate the eggs with two slices of toast topped with laughing cow and tomatoes. this went great with the eggs.

thursdays are always the worst for me at work.  it is like i hit the wall and just want to give up entirely!  fridays are a breeze because i am excited for the weekend. it’s thursdays that really are the pits.

meal 3: greek yogurt mess @ 3:30 PM

IMG_8474IMG_8475

yogurt and cereal just may be my all-time favorite snack.

IMG_8477

i only had about 2/3 cup of oikos left so i had to amp up the protein by adding 2 TB of EAS chocolate protein powder. i also added a TB of PB2 and it turned into a lovely chocolate peanut butter mousse!

moves

after work it was straight home to change for my workout.. it has been weird not going to the gym this week and instead staying home to do the insanity workout DVDs.. but to be honest it is pretty convenient!

today was a lower body workout day according to my usual schedule.  i already had DOMS in my legs from the fit test & cardio set of insanity that i did on tuesday and wednesday.. so i decided to just skip the weight lifting and do the cardio power & resistance DVD..

yowza.

this was awesome. sorry to lack in the moves posting~ i know a lot of you like to get ideas for workouts. but here is an idea: go buy the insanity DVDs. haha. they are awesome!

today’s workout was 40 minutes long and consisted of a lot of body weight strength moves (think tricep dips, walking pushups, squats) and by the end of the 40 minutes i was a dripping, sweaty mess. i LOVE these DVDs!! and i hate them. i am so stiff with DOMS in every inch of my body.

i am afraid of what the next DVD will bring…

meals

tonight i took a free meal and went to an annual culinary event~ art & soup!

IMG_8481

our friends kristen and rory (who i always talk about!) invited us to go to this event.

yes, i know it is not my free day, but the beauty of doing body for life is it allows flexibility.  this is a culinary event that i had planned on going to awhile back, then started body for life.  instead of staying home from the event, i opted to switch up my free day.  usually, i take a whole day off (saturday) from body for life style eating.  when something comes up during the week, i just eat clean all day long and then enjoy my meal out.  when saturday rolls around, i will eat clean all day and i may or may not have a free meal saturday night.  i love the flexibility of the plan!

art & soup is.. well.. just what it says. lots of art and lots of soup!  local artists and restaurateurs unite and have a fun collaboration of all their talents in one convenient location.  admission is a steal at just $12!

so.. we saw some art…

IMG_8485  IMG_8514  IMG_8508

check out this awesome painting of a kitchenaid/baking ingredients.. i totally want it for my kitchen!

IMG_8548

and we ate some soup!!

IMG_8522

there were probably 25 different restaurants there.. here are a few of our favorites!

chicken pot pie soup from left fork grill

IMG_8489IMG_8490IMG_8491IMG_8492

wild mushroom, pear & gorgonzola soup from tin angel cafe

IMG_8523IMG_8524

marshall’s favorite was the granny smith apple & bacon with cheddar from red rock

IMG_8520IMG_8521

and my favorite was the butternut squash & leek soup with spring onion jam & gorgonzola crumbles from cafe molise

IMG_8540IMG_8541

pierre country bakery was offering up some bread!

IMG_8518 IMG_8516

and they also had an array of pastries including mint brownies, cheesecake & peach tarts

IMG_8547IMG_8544IMG_8545

i had one bite of that brownie and realized it was a thick layer of mint frosting. ICK.. i hate frosting. the cheesecake was divine (i had a nibble of marshall’s) and the peach tart was just what i wanted. it was delicious.

we finished the taste testing off with some coffee from grounds for coffee

IMG_8550IMG_8551

art & soup was a really fun event and i am so glad our friends invited us along for the experience.  i think we will have to go again next year!!

IMG_8554

good times. and i really didn’t over do it.. it was fun to try a lot of different soups. i didn’t go hog wild trying EVERYTHING.. i indulged in the soups that looked tastiest and i stopped when i was full.

i realize this dinner was lacking in the protein department~ probably the reason my tummy is rumbling now only a couple hours later! i will probably have a protein cake and then call it a night.

sorry to not be very entertaining this time around! i will be back tomorrow with flashback friday.. and don’t forget, friday, march 26th is national spinach day!!!

Qs~

1. what is your favorite type of art? i like modern art.. have you guys ever been to the tate modern museum in london? i LOVE that type of stuff. i can’t wait to have a house to decorate.

2. what is your favorite kind of soup? i am a huge fan of anything tomato or tomato based.. paired with a grilled cheese, of course ;)

mom March 25, 2010 at 10:19 pm

What a fun event! Loved seeing the art work and YOU!! Gramps always ate mustard on his fried egg sandwiches – glad you discovered it! xoxo p.s. please get me some of those insanity dvds quick!!!

mom March 25, 2010 at 10:32 pm

.p.s.s I was so excited to tell you I had waffles today and I forgot. So glad I remembered night, night!!

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) March 25, 2010 at 10:51 pm

Yes, been to the Tate modern. there was a hilarious video exhibit with some naked guy playing with his wee-wee then squirting ketchup on himself. Hahah! It was a riot!

I’ve definitely been thinking more BFL since your post but I don’t think I could really do it. Fun to just think along though!

Soups- yes please- love them all. Prob. anything with beans. Not creamy ones though for the calorie bomb.

Mama Pea March 25, 2010 at 11:24 pm

Thanks for the linkage, lovey! I love your Free Day switcheroo. My favorite soup is Cashew Carrot Ginger, but basically anything with coconut milk and curry = AMAZING!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) March 26, 2010 at 1:07 am

Hey lady, the post you did last nite, then Mama Pea’s post and some recent ramblings and a prior post of my own…has led me to seriously consider my lifelong goal of becoming a fitess model, figure girl, or doing bikini. Have you ever done shows? What stops me? The fact that i dont like weights or the gym but i posted about it today. Ifyou have any words of wisdom if you ever did shows, holla. :) xoxo

Kerry March 26, 2010 at 1:38 am

I loooooove your posts!! the art & soup looks good! How do you know what national food day it is?! i love it! haha! I’ll be eating my spinach today!

Naomi (onefitfoodie) March 26, 2010 at 2:23 am

love this post! wow I wouldn’t think that pear and gorgonzola SOUP would be good, vut after thinking about it, I bet they could turn out a meannnn soup!

the dijon and eggs, hmmm I think i’ll have to try that to see what I think….I tend to like my eggs more on the sweet style (think cinnamon, jam, LC) but I think mixing it with turkey and dijon sounds surprisingly good!

ummm I have MAJOR DOMS from the lower body BFL workout I did, holey moley! I did major foam rolling yesterday but they are still quite sore!

I want to try the DVD’s!!! I wish i had room in my stupid apt! I bet I could make it but its quite a tight space in the main living room area…grrr

My favorite soup is french onion OR my moms greens and beans soup! it is packed with kale, beans, broth based YUM so good!

Do those protein cakes fill you up? I had one yesterday and it does NOTHING for my hunger :(

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is March 26, 2010 at 3:38 am

Pear and gorgonzola soup sounds amazing! I don’t know anything about art, like literally…nothing.

Lauren March 26, 2010 at 3:43 am

Yay for trying the eggs!!! Next time, don’t forget the avocado! :)

Looks like such a fun night. A full dinner of soup sounds fantastic. :)

balancejoyanddelicias March 26, 2010 at 3:44 am

that’s such a fun event!! art and soup? woooo!!!
fav art=modern art as well
fav soup=can’t remember.. it’s soooo hot these days, all I want is salad. :)

Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) March 26, 2010 at 5:07 am

Fun times! I would love to go to an art&soup event =D

I like modern art, too- Andy Warhol is a fave!

SOUP ahh I love soup. French onion tops the list but I also love anything creamy… tomato, butternut squash, the like.

Hope your Friday beats your Thursday!

ProteinGirl March 26, 2010 at 5:48 am

You didn’t eat a lot at that expo at all! WOW!!! MY mom made a killer cauliflower-esque type soup when I lived at home. I think it had either sour cream or buttermilk in it. Loved all my moms soups actually! Even her white bean one (she always added the sour cream or buttermilk). Mushroom soup, MATZO ball soup and ALPHABETIES!!! OMG. Best Soup EVER! lol.

Heather (Where's the Beach) March 26, 2010 at 5:53 am

Your waffle looks so good. I use that same recipe to make pancakes but had not tried it for waffles yet. YUM. I think my favorite soup would be butternut squash.

jenngirl March 26, 2010 at 6:03 am

I’m really interested to see how Mama Pea’s BFL plan goes, I can’t wait to see what she comes up with!

1. I love all kinds of art, but lately I’ve found myself drawn to photography…and I enjoy just going to art shows, we have a few local ones here every now and then. But then, when I’ve been to the Louvre in Paris, I’m drawn to the beautiful Renaissance era art.

2. Depending on my mood, I adore your basic veggie soup, but I ALWAYS get miso soup when I go to Japanese restaurants!

Lauren @ Eater not a runner March 26, 2010 at 6:25 am

I love modern art too! The tate is amazing, also the pompidou in paris :-0

Probably new england clam chowder…yum!

Christine March 26, 2010 at 6:35 am

Some of those soups sounded amazing! I am with you on the picture of the kitchen appliance and ingredients – really cool. When the time comes, you can make your own compilation with your own touch, then have “someone” (I will! I will!) Photoshop it into a painting. Somehow, I think yours will include two fuzzy little faces in the backround :0)

Sarah (Finding My Balance) March 26, 2010 at 6:36 am

OH.MY.GAWD. i want to go to a soup-based event!!!!! that looks so fun! and soup is my favorite!!!!! gah! the answer to q2 is way too hard for me. i love ’em all. …borsch, kharcho, black bean, veggie chili, chicken noodle, butternut squash… nommmm.

my favorite art is the post-impressionist movement… i also really like early photography. random!

hayleycepeda March 26, 2010 at 6:47 am

I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Insanity DVDs! It’s awesome that you’re trying them out! That looks like such a cool art show!! I’ve never been to anything like that. I’d have to say I’m more of a non-modern art lover, but that’s primarily because I like hearing the stories behind the paintings. The Tate is HUUUUUGE but a very cool museum. I still don’t think my mom has even seen everything in there even though she grew up in England and usually visits that place every time she goes back. How do you get your eggs to turn out so nice and compact? I think I remember reading one time that you nuke them in a mug but I could be wrong? That’s a cute picture of you with the soup. :)

Karissa @ CardioFoodie March 26, 2010 at 6:54 am

I have a neighbor that is using the Insanity Dvds and loves them. I might just challenge my hubby into getting them!

1. I know zilch about art, so I can’t even answer this question. (I am the kid whose stick figures were bad)
2. I love anything tomato based as well. Tomato soup and a sandwich is the most comforting meal, ever!

Paige @ Running Around Normal March 26, 2010 at 7:18 am

I am super excited to follow MamaPea along on her vegan BFL challenge. :)
The Art and Soup even looks awesome! I’m a big fan of modern art, too. Love it. Glad you had such a fab time, lady!
Have a great weekend:)

lowandbhold March 26, 2010 at 7:18 am

Oh blast… I didn’t take a picture of my smoothie to prove my celebration of National Spinach Day. I will have to have two today I suppose :)

1. I like modern art also, and photography.
2. I love all soup! But tomato rocks! And bean soup. And corn chowder. Soup is good.

That event sounds awesome. Definitely worth a free meal.

emily March 26, 2010 at 7:45 am

1. Modern art is my favorie too.
2. Calaloo (a Caribbean stew with okra)

Ildie March 26, 2010 at 7:48 am

I love modern, abstract and vintage photography for sure but I do like some classical pieces. To look at, not to own personally. Doesn’t really fit my eclectic decor. :)

Favorite soup is a good clam chowder or tomato bisque.

Therese March 26, 2010 at 7:51 am

I just left a comment on Mamma Pea’s blog! I am sooo interested to see what recipes she comes up with. I would love ideas for different protein sources.

You are a rockstar. Push through that soreness and I promise Insanity gets easier!

Jamie (BeautyandtheBeef) March 26, 2010 at 8:00 am

That event looks awesome, I love soup! I don’t even think I can pick a favorite, I like too many.

From Party To Hearty March 26, 2010 at 8:40 am

I can always go with a tomato soup + a grilled cheese with HOT SAUCE! That yogurt mess was a great idea by the way!

fightingwithfood March 26, 2010 at 8:56 am

Looks like a fun event! We have lots of food stuff around here year-round, but nothing based on soup. It’d be great to have one in the winter!
I’m a huge fan of wearable art :) When they have art shows nearby, I always head straight to the homemade jewelry tents. As far as soup goes, I LOVE panera’s chicken noodle – or any chicken noodle soup with big, fat pasta! Total comfort.

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine March 26, 2010 at 8:57 am

I LOVE tomato soup, especially when it has big chunks of stewed tomatoes floating around in it…Amy’s is my favorite!! Thanks soooo much for the link to Mama Pea’s post, I’ve been wondering if it’s possible and can’t wait to check it out!!

Ps- working on a guest post and hopefully I’ll have it done by this afternoon!! Happy Friday!!

inmytummy March 26, 2010 at 9:20 am

I liked your marcos post. It was very helpful to me. I had no idea how to figure that stuff out.

I loved the Tate. And as far as soup goes, I like vegetable the best.

peanutbutterfingers March 26, 2010 at 9:43 am

yowz-aaaaa! that protein waffle + recipe looks deeeelicious!

also, that pic of you w/ the soup is adorable.

ellie March 26, 2010 at 9:51 am

such a cool event!!!! Haha…art + soup. Never have I heard of anything like that.

YES I have been to the Tate Modern! Fave museum- I love modern art. Even though I don’t understand a lot of it :P

Soup- I always think I don’t like it but really enjoy it when I DO have it. Just not the kind of thing I eat, but carrot + coriander, tomato basil, cream of mushroom, bean e fagiole…um yeah. I guess I do like soup

Ashley March 26, 2010 at 10:16 am

I love art exhibits as well! SO and I toured a ton of them while in Arizona. All the creative people live out west!

Looks like you guys had a blast. Any kind of soup I’m game for. Especially seafood ones!

Hallie March 26, 2010 at 10:31 am

Oh I love love soup. I’ll have it mid-summer, whatever! Lately I’ve been into black bean soup, but I also love tortilla and my homemade vegetable soups too. Oh and I think you and I need to go out for cake because I LOVE frosting. You can have the cake part and I’ll take the frosting (and the headache and tummy ache that follows when I OD on the stuff)

Andrea March 26, 2010 at 10:32 am

Looks like a fun event. I have a non post related body for life question. Are all of your cardio workouts just twenty minutes?

Graze With Me March 26, 2010 at 10:34 am

I love workout DVD’s – they’re so easy for me to use and I love that I can change up my workouts and follow along with someone who knows what they’re doing.

That soup event looks so fun – I love the flexibility of your plan too because it means we get to live vicariously through you! My favorite soup is probably my mom’s turkey & wild rice soup she makes with Thanksgiving leftovers. So good.

The Healthy Apple March 26, 2010 at 10:41 am

Ooooo what a fun event! It looks fabulous…Have a great weekend!

Lara (Thinspired) March 26, 2010 at 11:23 am

What a fun event! Art and soup, I can’t think of a more random, yet more comforting, combination.

1. French Impressionism.
2. Won-ton. Or Mom’s homemade chicken & rice :)

Happy Friday, Janetha Bean!

Jenna March 26, 2010 at 11:40 am

Tomato with grilled cheese!!

lisaou11 March 26, 2010 at 11:44 am

Sean does a lot of abstract modern type stuff that I love. Speaking of art, I’m going to an erotic art show tonight and Seans pieces will be in it! WHOOHOO…plus, there be food, live peep shows, erotic dance offs, and erotic poetry reading! should be interesting huh?

Shannon (The Daily Balance) March 26, 2010 at 12:31 pm

awesome event! but you HATE frosting?! i dunno if we can be friends. well unless you let me eat all of yours, then maybe we can work somehting out ;)

xo

Errign March 26, 2010 at 2:29 pm

I had NO idea that today was national waffle day, but perhaps that is why I woke up with a GIGANTIC waffle craving? Anddd I totally showed that craving who was boss by shoving a Van’s waffle in my face! :)

Susan March 26, 2010 at 3:01 pm

Gah! I didn’t get your text until I was at work on Thursday and 90% of my meals had already been prepared and packed for the day. Although really, every day should be waffle day ;) I need to make more of that maple pecan butter… and keep it for myself! Muhaha.

1. Impressionism – van Gogh, Matisse, Renoir, Monet, etc. I lovelovelove it. I was exposed to it when I went to Western Europe (including the van Gogh gallery in Amsterdam) and I’ve been obsessed ever since. I’ve done travelling specifically to go see Impressionism exhibits!

2. I always say chili for this one. Is that technically a soup? Anything thick and stew-like :)

I hate frosting too!! Also why I never eat cupcakes. Blech. Sugar headache.

Have a fantabulous Friday love!!

Tamizn March 26, 2010 at 3:22 pm

I have to be honest and say my favorite soup is my homemade soup! Its better than any shop thats for sure! x x

BroccoliHut March 26, 2010 at 3:33 pm

Does chili count as soup? Cuz that would SO be my fave.

katey March 26, 2010 at 4:05 pm

heyy janetha! I have a question for youuuu… I attempted to make protein oatmeal this morning.. and it was DISGUSTING! the only protein powder in my area under 20 dollars is Jillian Micheals vanilla.. It tasted ok on its own, but it was HORRIBLE in my oatmeal! Do you have any suggestions on how to make it better? or at least how to make protein oats the right way? lol

Lizzy March 26, 2010 at 4:34 pm

beautiful lady!! …can I just say how adorable your momma and her comments are!! (ok I said it! she is soooo cute!!) What a great tasting night for you and your man! I am not a huge soup lover…cuz I’m not a huge cold weather lover ;) but i would have to pick a veggie chili because Beans are so tasty!!
~Do you have any problems with honey? I got an AMAZING local honey today at my farmer’s market and it has me inspired for a BOMB PowWow recipe…but I wanted to make sure all my official testers aren’t allergic/against honey in their protein bars!!…(think mighty maple…but lower sugar/carbs!)

I hope you’re having a FANTASTIC friday, staying warm, and cuddling up with your extremely cute puppies!! xoxo!

caronae March 26, 2010 at 5:45 pm

Thanks for sharing all the numbers in the last post :) The pecan butter looks so yummy with the waffle; I really need to expand my nut butter repertoire. They’re just so expensive :(
Keep up the great moves; the dvds sound like a really good challenge!
xoxo Caronae

Whole Body Love March 26, 2010 at 5:54 pm

lol I forgive you for not posting moves ;) Hmmm… my fave soup is chicken dumpling. As for art, I don’t have the greatest judgment :(
