I LOVED YOUR LISTS OF FIVE!!!! you guys are so clever and fun. it was super awesome reading you comments all day long.
i have had an unruly amount of emails asking me how i figure out my ratios for my macros (fat, carbs & protein) and how to calculate the number of grams needed in order to hit a certain ratio percentage. i’ll be the first to admit that it can be confusing. but i will also be the first to tell you that there is a simple method behind the madness. i will get to all the juicy details after i tell you about my day!
first off.. the day started with some horrible news! remember the chickens that roam around near my office?? MY BOSS HIT ONE WITH HIS TRUCK THIS MORNING. poor chicken. he definitely did not get to cross the road :(
anyway…
i will be showing you my calorie breakdown with each meal today so you can refer to them during my little tutorial at the end of this post :)
meal 1: wafflewich @ 8:30 AM
i combined 3 egg whites + 1 whole egg and sandwiched the eggs between two nature’s path flax toaster waffles. i drizzled it all with some log cabin sugar free maple syrup! sometimes you just have to have some yolk in your life :)
drippy, syrupy goodness!
307 calories, 11g fat, 30g carbs, 23g protein, which is a carb/protein/fat ratio of 37/29/33
i had originally planned to have lauren’s favorite egg concoction but forgot to bring the main ingredient (dijon mustard) to work with me! tomorrow, for sure. there’s always tomorrow, right? right.
i was grateful that this meal was a tad higher in fat because it helped hold me over for longer than the usual 3 hours between meals. i had a lunch date planned with the bestie for a little after noon and so i knew i wouldn’t be eating until about 12:45ish when all was said and done.
meal 2: whole foods salad bar! @ 12:45 PM
mmm. you know what i love the most about the WF salad bar? the sweet and sour tofu. IT IS SO DANG GOOD! i wish i knew how to re-create it at home, but i am sadly a failure when it comes to preparing tofu. i think i need averie or miss gliding calm or caroline to come make it for me ;)
305 calories, 8g fat, 15g carbs, 31g protein, which is a carb/protein/fat ratio of 24/48/28
i loved that we were able to dine on the patio because of the glorious sunshine, but it actually was still a tad on the chilly side for al fresco lunches! we didn’t finish lunch until about a quarter after 1 and i left with a smile on my face and a full belly.
after lunch my super sweet co-worker gave me the greatest gift… PURPLE BOOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks, linds! you are such a babe. i hope your chicken & white bean salsa soup is good tonight (she used my recipe for her crock pot dinner tonight, everyone.)
i came into work early today (shocking, i know!!) and so i was able to leave early.. which meant i had to have my meal 3 earlier than usual since i typically go straight to my workout from work.. well, the problem here was timing. timing is everything, folks. i wasn’t really that hungry yet because i had a LATE lunch and was having an EARLY meal 3~ but i knew that if i skipped meal 3 all together i would turn into an ornery, cranky beast and we can’t have that.. so i just kept meal 3 simple and liquidy.
meal 3: isopure plus protein drink + 1/2 of a chocolate peppermint luna bar @ 3:30 PM
these were on sale at GNC! ten bucks for a six pack. sure, it is more expensive than a sixer of brews.. but it sure is a lot better for ya!! but really.. 60 calories and 15 grams of protein in this tiny bottle? cannot be beat. and it really does taste good. take my word for it and go buy some!
had to pair a carb with the protein, so i went with half of a luna. body for life tells me to and i know the two somehow work together. i don’t question the system.. i know it works :)
150 calories, 2.5g fat, 13g carbs, 19.5g protein, a carb/protein/fat ratio of 51/34/15
i am not running. i am being a smartie pants and staying off high impact exercises for the sake of my ankles. i also get bored with the elliptical. sorry, i just can’t stand it. the treadmill is not so bad but the elliptical just bores me to death.. so, i opted for a different form of HIIT..
insanity!
so i didn’t mention this, but i did the insanity fit test last night and holy guacamole it was amazing. it was challenging. it was fun. it was everything i hoped for and more. so, when i saw that the workout for the day after the fit test was the plyometric cardio circuit i decided it would be a perfect replacement for my usual HIIT. however.. that disc did not work. what the funk? that is what i get for buying the DVDs from some dude for fifty bucks. BUT, i have contacted him, and he assured me he will replace any malfunctioning discs.
luckily, insanity is full of cardio workouts, so i opted for the pure cardio circuit and it was 40 minutes of, well, insanity!
sorry i can’t really show you guys all the details of the workout since it was a DVD, but i can tell you what it consisted of:
- switch kicks
- sprints
- suicide sprints
- power jacks
- burpees
- lunges
- high knees
etc, etc, etc. just so you know i burned 100 calories in the first ten minutes. this workout was crazy. i am in love with it.
and guess what? i have the worst DOMS in my legs already.. and i haven’t even done a lower body workout.. it is strictly from jumping around like a crazed lunatic in my living room. p.s.~ marshall did a sneak attack and filmed me on his iphone while doing insanity. geeeez.
after this workout i was a sweaty mess so i quickly showered so i could EAT. meal 3 was measly because sure, i wasn’t hungry at the time i had it, but by the time i was done with my workout, 4 hours had gone by and i was HANGRY. i don’t think the fact that i could smell the delicious aroma coming from the crock pot in the kitchen during my workout helped much ;)
meal 4: chicken & black bean soup (crock pot meal) @ 7:30 PM
313 calories, 3g fat, 38g carbs, 33g protein, a carb/protein/fat ratio of 42/48/10
HOORAY for the return of crock pot wednesday!!!!
in the pot:
- 1 lb diced chicken (put it in raw)
- 1 (14.5 oz) can organic black beans
- 1 (14.5 oz) can all natural diced tomatoes
- 1 cup medium-heat organic salsa
- 1 bag (12 oz) frozen corn
- 1 can (4 oz) spicy diced green chiles
- tons of cumin
- tons of garlic
- tons of black pepper
- tons of dried onion
- tons of chili powder
- little bit of salt
- splash of water
set it on low for about 8 hours and then i didn’t have to lift a finger come dinner time!
this came out spicy!! i think it was the green chiles. it was super tasty!!
here is the nutrition label that thedailyplate.com generated when i put in the ingredients~
as you can see, my ratios that i post are approximate.. but i am not a stickler for exact measurements. a ballpark number is fine by me.
i spent the evening hanging out with my 3 favorites.. marshall, penelope and randy pants!
and i iced my ankles.. burrrrr!
we watched “the invention of lying”.. SO, SO funny! oh my gosh. so funny! if you haven’t seen it, go watch it. now.
i may or may not have nibble on some popcorn.
eventually it was time for dessssssert :)
meal 5: PB banana nut bread protein cake + chocolate almond milk @ 10:00 PM
officially addicted. just sayin’.
when i dip, you dip, we dip.
280 calories, 10g fat, 18g carbs, 30g protein, a carb/protein/fat ratio of 25/43/32
and that, friends, was today in a nutshell. a pretty big, lengthy nutshell.. maybe something like an almond shell. those are kind of long when it comes to nuts. (TWSS) do almonds come in shells?
***********************************************************
and now, the fun stuff! well, if you are a numbers geek like me (i know deb is!)
lesson one: calories per gram.
- there are 4 calories in one gram of carbs
- there are 4 calories in one gram of protein
- there are 9 calories in one gram of fat
lesson two: converting calories to grams within a 40/40/20 ratio.
for simplicity sake, let’s say my daily calorie intake is 1500.
i picked this number because it is easy to work with, not because that is how many calories i suggest you eat. just wanted to make that clear. ALSO.. i don’t figure my meals out this way, i do it the opposite of this description, since i am not a calorie counter.. i am a ratio counter :) but i will get to that after showing you just how to figure ratios out when it comes to calories.
SO.. you want to get 40% of your calories from carbs, 40% from protein and 20% from fat? here is how to figure:
- 1500 calories X 40% = 600 calories need to come from carbs and 600 calories need to come from protein
- that leaves 300 calories coming from fat, and, not so surprising.. 1500 calories x 20% = 300
now that we know how many calories are coming from each macro, we can convert it to grams:
- 600 calories of carbs divided by 4 calories per gram = 150 grams of carbs needed (40% of daily total calories)
- 600 calories of protein divided by 4 calories per gram = 150 grams of protein needed (40% of daily total calories)
- 300 calories of fat divided by 9 calories per gram = 33.3333333333 (okay, let’s just call it 34) grams of fat needed (20% of daily total calories)
lesson three: finding an average gram count to aim for at each meal.
to take this one step further, you can divide the number of grams by the number of meals you eat. i eat five meals a day, three hours apart. some people who do BFL eat six meals a day. i think that whatever works best for you is the “right” way.
- 150 grams divided into 5 meals = 30 grams of each protein and carbs per meal
- 34 grams divided into 5 meals = 6.8 grams of fat per meal
obviously i don’t hit these numbers exactly every time i eat. but at least i know a ballpark of where i want to be. some meals are carb heavy, others are protein heavy and some are even fat heavy~ such as meal 1 for me today.
i know that some people like to eat larger breakfasts, lunches and dinners that are higher in calories and then do smaller midmeals/snacks. this is a great way to eat, but i prefer to keep my meals all about the same size and eat every three hours. this is what works for me, but something else might work for you.
lesson four: doing it without the math.
body for life suggests you create your meals using the palm/fist method. what is that, you ask?
- pick a protein source and eyeball the portion, making it roughly the size of you clenched fist or open palm
- pick a carb source and do the same thing
- add a dash of healthy fat
sounds too easy to be true, right? well it works. this is the way i did the measuring for my entire first BFL challenge and any time i got down to calculating the numbers, they always ended up around 40/40/20 ratios.
here are some examples of what portion sizes are for me and my hand size:
carbs
- 1 medium apple / orange / other fruit
- 1 small baked potato
- 3/4 cup cooked brown rice / cooked wheat pasta / couscous / other grain
- 1 slice of whole wheat bread (or two if they are small, like the bread i eat!)
- 1 whole wheat roll
- 3/4 cup beans
protein
- 4 oz chicken breast / fish / lean beef / etc
- 3/4 cup low fat cottage cheese
- 3/4 cup greek yogurt
- 1 cup egg whites
i hope that makes sense. i have spent a long time reading labels and knowing roughly how many grams of each macro come with each serving of certain foods. but, this is real life. you can’t always read a label. for example.. my whole foods salad today… there was no label. there was no scale. i have no idea if the amount of chicken i ate was actually equal to 4 ounces. but i just eyeballed the amount that was roughly the size of my fist and called it good!
lesson five: determining what ratios the meal you just ate calculates to.
sooo.. you just ate a meal and you want to know the carb/protein/fat ratios? here is how. let’s do it with my meal 3, for simplicity sake, shall we? yes, we shall.
okay, so i had 150 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 13 grams of carbs and 19.5 grams of protein. let’s see what the carb/protein/fat ratio is.
- 13 grams of carbs x 4 calories per gram = 52 calories from carbs
- 19.5 grams of protein x 4 calories per gram = 78 calories from protein
- 2.5 grams of fat x 9 calories per gram = 22.5 calories from fat
okay, this adds up to 152.5 calories.. i am totally aware.. and i am not quite sure why it doesn’t add up to 150 (might have something to do with the fiber grams? or the website has the calories/grams wrong for the specific foods) but.. since it is only 2.5 calories off, i am not too worried. i can still figure my ratio from this number.
- 52 carb calories divided by 152.5 total calories = 34%
- 78 protein calories divided by 152.5 total calories = 51%
- 22.5 fat calories divided by 152.5 total calories = 15%
which leaves us with a carb/protein/fat ratio of 34/51/15!
did that make sense? sure hope so.
lesson six: use technology!
do you guys think i do the equation from lesson five up there, for every meal i eat??? no way. i use thedailyplate.com and it conveniently has a HUGE database full of almost all of the foods i eat. when i make up a recipe, it allows me to enter the recipe’s ingredients into the system, punch in the number of servings that come from the recipe, and it then generates all the nutrition information for the recipe and i can add that to my plate. this is how i came up with the nutrition information for my chicken & black bean soup in meal 4 above.
not only is this website nice for calories and gram counts.. it also breaks down the exact ratios for you in a handy dandy pie chart! here are a few examples:
(not sure why it is cutting off the first part of the word “protein”, sorry)
sunday, 3/21/10:
monday, 3/22/10:
tuesday, 3/23/10:
as you can see, the website calculates my ratios out for me very nicely! i don’t mind doing the math, but when i eat as many times a day as i do.. it is nice to rely on technology :)
another nice thing is thedailyplate.com lets you break you meals out into categories and i have shown you that in my meals above. i like that i can see the totals for each individual meal and then look at my pie chart for the day overall.
while i don’t hit 40/40/20 ratios for each and every meal (as you can plainly see), i try to make up for certain areas i am lacking in so it will all balance out at the end of the day. my first meal was carb and fat heavy, my second was protein and fat heavy, my third meal was higher in protein, my fourth meal was carb heavy and my fifth meal was protein heavy.
but in the end, check out my pie chart for the day:
fabulous! a little fat heavy.. i blame it on that egg yolk ;) but i am not complaining, i think these ratios are pretty stellar.
i want you all to know that i didn’t track my ratios anywhere when i did body for life the first time. it is not necessary to be meticulous in order to have success. i am just tracking things this time around for fun. and to show you guys. you can really just follow the eating guidelines (pick a protein, pick a carb, add a little fat) and you will have success.
and i just rambled about this because a lot of you asked.. and it is something that i am glad i know. it’s fun to learn more about food!
hope this little tutorial clarified ratios and macros for everyone. and even if you don’t use the 40/40/20 plan like i do, hopefully you learned a little something when it comes to calculating grams and all that jazz. i know it was not until i started body for life that i learned about fat grams having more than double the calories of protein or carb grams. it is pretty interesting stuff!
okay, before i go, a few bloggie items of business:
- if you wrote me about not receiving your secret bloggie valentine gift and i never wrote you back about it, it is because the person who was assigned to you never got back to me. i am not going to lie, i am pretty appalled at the number of people who did not get their valentines in the mail. i know that there were some of you with some mailing issues who got back to me regarding the problems.. but there were at least a dozen people who i never heard back from when trying to see what went on with their package asking if and when they mailed it. it makes me sad because i arranged the whole thing with high hopes it would be a fun exchange and i feel bad that so many people ended up with no valentine love. i am so sorry :( i wish i could send each and every one of you a package to make up for it. sigh.
- i am still looking for guest posts from anyone and everyone! you can talk about any subject under the sun. just email me or leave a comment letting me know you are interested. i’d love to feature your ramblings :) also, you don’t have to have a blog, i would love a guest post from a reader!
- i am still working on putting together my FAQ page full of the questions you guys asked me awhile back. don’t worry, i haven’t forgotten.. i am just a major procrastination station!!
- WOW there are a lot of new people commenting lately! just wanted to say HELLO FRIENDS! and thanks for reading, thanks for de-lurking, thanks for being so rad. warms my little heart right up!
- since i didn’t really have any time for blog reading today or tonight, so i will have to catch up with you all tomorrow! sure do love you guys :)
Qs~
1. do you aim for a certain ratio of carbs and/or protein and/or fat? or do you just wing it? do you eat more carbs, more protein, or do you balance the two? how about timing.. do you eat at specific times every day? how do you space your meals out? i would love it if you shared your own personal style of eating in the comments section. this is a food blog, after all!
2. do you like workout DVDs? which ones do you use? i used to be one of those people who thought you could not get a good workout from a DVD. insanity has served me up a slice of humble pie!! mmm.. pie…

P.S.!!! don’t forget that THURSDAY, MARCH 25TH IS NATIONAL WAFFLE DAY! yeeeah!!

As far as ratios go it depends on my current goals. In general I go by what I call “salad ratios”. Tons of veggies, equal servings of protein and non-veggie carbs, and a moderate small-moderate portion of fat. I eat three meals a day with two snacks. Again timing depends on my goals.
I tried p90x. The workouts were quality but Tony Horton was a little too over the top for my taste. Heard good things about Insanity. T
i like to eat from each food group, focusing mainly on veggies/fruits. and then i just eat when i’m hungry!
Thanks for clarifying it, I thought it was a complicated process, so I was lazy to try to figure it out macros. Now it seems very easy. And poor chicken.
What a rock star post! I actually count overall macros, instead of ratios at each meal, but I think it comes out roughly to C/P/F=20/50/30. Lately I’ve only been eating starchy carbs every 4th day, but I’m still up to around 80 g just on veggies and the little bits from all the yogurt & cottage cheese. I’m loving it and so does my body! :)
Loved all this info! I don’t count anything but totally wing it. But lately I’ve been paying more attention to adding protein and lowering my carbs (I eat WAY too many carbs if I don’t watch it…). My goal is to count my macros for a few days some time soon to get a better idea as to where I am at.
Insanity sounds & looks intense. I rarely do workout DVDs since it just doesn’t work out with the toddler right now…
Oh you are so inspiring! Your little six pack bikini avatar is motivating me to try BFL again, but as a vegan. I don’t know how this is going to work out, but I really want to try to up my protein. It’s just so darn hard without the meat and dairy! Even with a ton of effort today, my macros were about 40/30/30, with the 40 being carbs. I can only imagine how my ratios broke down when I wasn’t focusing on protein intake. Maybe 50/50? :) If you have any insight, I’d love to hear it! Have a good Thursday…oh and I HAVE too see that movie, the promos looked HILARIOUS!
I have no idea HOW you find the time, or brain bandwidth!! to post all this data. I admit, I am fairly clueless about it all. I have never once counted any of this stuff. i dont even know what half of it means. I eat plants. I do yoga. That’s about it :)
xoxo
I don’t count anything.. I have to admit that I’m like Averie and know nothing about that stuff but to be honest, I’m not really that interested in it too. I just eat what I fancy and it works quite well and I’m not missing anything at all. ;)
Workout DVDs.. I really like some yoga DVDs and I have to admit that the Gillian Micheals DVDs aren’t too bad either though she’s getting on my nerves. ;)
Ahh this is too much for brain! Sorry, i didnt read it all! haha! Your crockpot looks yummy though!! xx
I don;t really stick to ratios now, but the one that I stick to the most is 50% carbs, 30% protein, and 20% fat!
poor chicken , that must have been sad :(
I think I eat way more carbs and less protein than you do. I don’t know exactly, but probably 60% carbs, 15% protein and 25% fat? well.. at least that’s what I aim for. I like to eat carbs and protein during the day and at night have a big bowl of veggies in form of stir-fry or warm salad. so even if I’m bloated, I don’t have to show my food baby to others! ;)
Shucks that you forgot the dijon but hopefully you get a chance to try the eggs today! I promise you will love them!! I can’t wait to make them again this weekend. :)
This post was so informative. I never really think of my breakdowns that intensely. I think if I always thought like that, I would GO CRAZY but its good to be mindful from time to time.
Love ya sweetums!
Thanks for going to all that trouble. I always wanted to ask exactly how you did this, but thought I must be the only one who just didn’t get it. I think this would be a great thing to add to the Beginner Question section on Tracker.
I love my workout DVDs. I pretty much use Cathe Friedrich exclusively. So far, she’s the only one who can kick my butt. However, I’ve really been wanting to try Insanity. That looks like a lot of math, which is why I don’t keep track of any of that. Maybe if I did I’d see better results with lifting…
Wow! Thanks for all the info. I just started reading your posts and I really like them. You are totally inspiring me to start eating the right way in order to get in shape!!
I try to eat a high protein/high carb diet so I have energy for my runs. The fat I eat is minimal and I try to limit it to the healthy kind. I love me some peanut butta. I eat mini-meals throughout the day so that my energy doesn’t randomly drop. I just aim for a mix of carbs and protein in each meal and it typically works out.
I’m dangerous at salad bars. I get way too excited and pile everything that looks good into my salad, no pre-planning involved…sometimes this makes for a not-so-tasty salad. :-p
That poor chickadee :(…but I guess when they’re out and about, accidents are bound to happen.
Thanks for the movie rec! I was honestly interested in seeing that one, but it just never panned out, nor did it get much press, so I forgot!
1. I eat estimated ratios of food groups. I don’t keep track of every percentage, been there, done that, and it just leads to obsession. I have found much success for myself just eating a balanced diet including a good amount of each food group at each meal. But I totally think it’s interesting the way you do it, and it’s great to be so on top of what you’re fueling your bod with :)
2. I a bigger fan of yoga/pilates dvds, I’ve never tried a legit “workout” dvd. I’d sure like to though!
I’d say I eat high carb and protein and little fat. I’m not sure what the ratios would be exactly, but now you’ve made me curious to find out! I know I should eat more fats but my digestive system does NOT like them haha
I don’t really worry about ratios too much because I think getting ENOUGH cals is really important. I do eat plenty of carbs though because I log a ton of miles. I also like my protein when I am swimming often. Then again, I love my fat. Haha I guess i just balance it out! I also love your waffle sandwich. No real maple syrup though? It tastes amazing if you have never tried it. I would love to do a guest post because I am a new blogger but I am not really sure what to talk about. Maybe I will do one in the future?
Oh happy day for the geek numbers freak, Deb smoothiegirl yayayayay! That was sooooo much fun. I love love love Lance (aka the Daily Plate)- another post I’m formulating in the grey matter. I have so many but no time to write them, sigh. OK Lance is SCREAMING at you about having too much protein b/c he’s screaming at me every day and I only have about 100ish g per day. Grr Lance, stop screaming at me. And lay off about the fiber too dude!
I don’t do ratios but I have been trying to get more fat in every meal/snack and when I forget, man the hangry beast comes out and is not ever satisfied. It makes me kinda want to try BFL, but I think I’d actually have to increase my fats and carbs?? Not sure. When I have time I’ll check my numbers.
Love you!!!!!
PS YOur “not high impact” workout was soooo totally crazy high-impact- do NOT wreck your ankle further- those plyo moves are very very very high impact and intense- be careful little friend!!
Holy Hell Janetha this post was FANTABULOUS!!!! It was so good, in fact, I’m bookmarking it. I actually got away from counting calories and figuring out ratios, etc, but I am definitely toying with the idea of going back to BFl (esp. after reading yours and Lisa’s blogs so often and seeing all the yummy meals you make). I am so impressed you were able to figure out how many cals were in your Whole Foods salad – how did you do that?! I am really bad at guesstimating calories for veggies, etc, although I think they do put calorie count info on their salad bar.
I think what I love most about reading your blog and Lisa’s is that you guys prove that BFL isn’t always about eating a plain grilled chicken breast, a sweet potato and a side of broccoli for every meal. Your food always looks so delicious (EVERY meal) and that’s the groovy thing about it. I strayed from BFl and started bingeing because I got tired of eating the same thing every day, but that was my fault. Now I have a plethora of yummy eats! That was such a dorky sentence..
Ok I’m rambling on and writing a novel here so I’ll finish. That kind of answers the calorie-count/macro ratio question (though again, you make it seem so easy so I might play with the idea of doing so again and adding in some for my pregnancy). As far as workout DVDs go, I can never seem to stick with them. I have no problemo doing cardio at home, but when it comes to doing weights I have to be in a gym environment for motivation otherwise I slack off. I am very curious about Intensity though..
You’re the bomb Janetha!! I LOVE YOU!! :)
De-lurking….right here.
Hi Janetha! Just started following your blog this week and I’m lovin it! You give tons of useful health/fitness info in your blogs which I think is great. And actually, I recent began lifting heavy (well, heavier), and so I’ve been looking to get my macros into the right ratios. This entry couldn’t have come at a better time.
Have a great day!
I’ve never done ratios but I’m sure if I was training for something or following a plan I would want to watch my macros much more closely. I just kind of eat what I crave when I’m hungry. Luckily it seems to be working for me.
Have a good day boo!
I’ve really been focusing on the ratios lately… I’ve added more weights to my workout and know that the protein is important. I’m vegan – so as mama pea said, it’s really hard to get to 40/40/20. Your suggestions would be amazing!
Invention of Lying – so great! Made my last flight from west to east coast fly by! haha! =)
I TOLD YOU INSANITY WAS BALLS TO THE WALLS! Oh and we had like 3 DVDs that would play on our Playstation 3 but not on the laptop. I think Beachbody made the disks really low budget and a lot of people have issues with them being defective.
I heart your protein cakes…they look identical to mine :)
I love the new layout of the Daily Plate. It makes adding all that jazz up such a breeze!
Hi Jenetha,
My Insanity dvds did the same thing, they would play in only one of my dvd players, I got mine from ebay. He let me keep the dvds and refunded my money! Sweet huh! I got great results but lost them real quick when I stopped. I now stick to strength training.
Hi Jenetha,
I’m officially “de-lurking”! I happened on your site a few weeks ago via a friend who sent me a link to read and I was pleasantly surprised. I have been a daily reader, including a few archives and I really enjoy what you have to say and offer. Thanks for the macro lesson…when you first mentioned it a week or so ago I did a bit of research but you broke it down perfectly. Good luck with the wedding planning and I look forward to staying in touch.
Aw, poor chicken!!!
Whole Foods salad bar makes me so happy. I will admit, my salads have been pretty darn expensive in the past! I spent 12 bucks once!
I cannot stand the elliptical either. Cannot! It makes me want to gouge my eyes out.
All that math and reading up there just tore a hole in my little brain. HA! How do you keep all that straight lady?
My rules for eating are simple. Low fat, low calorie, low “starchy” carbs, high fiber, high protein. High protein is more of a goal than a reality though. Still working on that one. I don’t obsess much with exact numbers either. I obsess about enough in my life as is. HA!
My eating schedule during Mon-Fri is as follows.
9:00-9:30 = breakfast
12:00-12:30 = lunch
4:00 = snack
7:15 = snack
9:00ish = dinner
On the weekends this fluctuates a bit depending on what I’ve got going on. I try to stick close to these hours though. It’s when my body naturally gets hungry.
I would LOVE to do a guest post. Anything goes right? MUWAHAHAHAHA! (j/k)
You’re so right – sometimes you do just need a little yolk. I prefer mine nice and runny :)
Holy cow, that’s a great post!! I suck at math, so I’m glad you put it in easier terms. Everyone I’ve seen do BFL has awesome results, but I’m not sure how well the plan would work for a vegetarian/mostly vegan diet…I am trying to eat more protein though!!
WF salad bar = best lunch ever. Every time I go there I get flustered because I can’t decide what I want.
I’d love to do a guest post chica!! I’ll have to think of some good stuff :)
Those calculations, although simple, boggle my mind!
Happy to hear you liked insanity- I’ve heard good things- I’m not going to lie though- Shaun T and I spent a lot of time together doing hip hop abs- it’d be hard to take him seriously- I’m into Tony Horton’s P90X program- I’ve never done the program start to finish, but he has kick ass workouts in it!
Thanks for the breakdown, it helps! I’ve also been quietly lurking awhile now and had to pop out to thank you for your knowledge.
And now for my confession/plea for help… I have tried making the protein cakes 3 different times, using 3 different proteins and methods (cooking times and recipes). I have yet to have something come out of the microwave that wasn’t rubbery and well, to be honest, gross! Any suggestions or thoughts on what the heck I’m doing wrong? I so want to try one of these (well, one of these that doesn’t taste like a pencil eraser that is)
Thanks!
My ratios usually end up being about 50% protein, 30% fat, and 20% protein. It works out well for me!
Were you good at math in school?? You sound like a genius!! LOL
Well explained! I’ll be reading your blog while away, just don’t have time to comment as much. 4am here and I am jet lagged, but you always make for a good read and the wee hours of the night, haha. oh and I MUST try dipping the protein cake in the almond milk, heck ya!
Oh wow, I’m still confused….I just go by the size of the hand method. It works for me!
This is a stellar post and I hope it’s helpful to whoever comes across it. You just did all the grunt work. People would be surprise of how little or excess of each group that are eating. Yeah, tracking for a little while is an eye opener. I think if you want to transform your body, you have to track what you put in your mouth….
I myself don’t follow percentages just macro ratios, i.e., 150g protein, 125g carbs, 35g fat which I plug into my excel spreadsheet. I make sure I fulfill my protein and fat intake. And I just want to say fat is not the enemy, right now it’s low but I usually go a tad higher than 35g.
I have the P90x and Insanity DVDs. I don’t know what I’m waiting for to start using them. I’m scaaaaaaaaaarreeeeeeeeed. Lol!
Sophia
I’m definitely intrigued by the insanity DVDs. But I can’t really afford to have them in my life right now. Maybe that will be a goal for after I’m done with my races this season.
1. I just wing it. I’d like to try the BFL thang sometime though. I just know I’d be eating a shit ton of dairy and eggs since I don’t really eat the meat. Which kind of worries me for some reason. I’m definitely a carb heavy eater. And I have a nice tummy pooch as a result :)
2. I have gone through periods where I only used workout DVDs to get in shape, mainly in high school. I looked pretty damn good when I was doing The Firm and Windsor Pilates every day.
Have a good day love!!
i loveeeeeeeeeeee me some dailyplate recipe calculating! haha i use that shiznaz around the clock! its so much fun to just put random stuff in there and see what comes out haha like what i’m doing right now :)
how timely you post a c-pot recipe! deej just bought a new one the other day! wooo hoooo
Interesting stuff… I guess like anything, the more you do it, the easier it gets. I count calories and protein and pay attention to other things, but don’t add up carbs, etc. In fact, I am clueless about carbs- just make sure to include some at each meal.
I missed crockpot wednesday!
The only workout DVD I have tried was Jillian Michaels Boost Your Metabolism. Not a fan of at home workouts :/ (but I am glad that I am not the only one who doesn’t love the elliptical- novelty has worn off)
hey sweetie!! we all missed you like crazy this past weekend in bmore!! I was trying to call you to catch up, but I realized i didn’t actually have your number! =(
1. I don’t aim for a certain ratio oif anything, but I do have a higher protein goal, a girls gotta get her protein in =)
2. i have never used a workout dvd, but i was always interested in jillian’s 30 day shred.
Thank you for this post! Everytime before when you mentioned the 40/20/20, my brain just could not wrap around it, but it’s all starting to make sense.
So far I haven’t really thought about carbs/protein/fat. I am going to start having to monitor fiber, though, so maybe it would be good if I got in the habit of thinking about “the big picture” too.
Wow, that must have taken forever for you to write all that out! Perhaps your new readership is because of the time, effort, and love you put into the bloggy :D At least that’s one reason I stick around. And, well, because you’re pretty awesome!
mmmm waffles. I love icing!! My legs love it too!
Holy crap my head exploded trying to figure that out. TGFT! Aka thank god for technology.
RIP Mister Chicken.
I am delurking and wanted to tell you, I love your blog. I am so inspired by your BFL and the meals you eat that I just reserved the book at the library. I’m concerned about the food – figuring it all out – but you are making it look not only easy, but yummy! Thanks for this post about the ratios and how you didn’t do all the number counting the first time you did BFL – I was a bit worried about all of the number counting.
Thanks for all the inspiration and keep those BFL tips coming! I’m excited to start it!
Hey cute lady,
I don’t eat in a very organised way but it goes something like this: have to eat breakfast pretty soon after waking up (especially on a weekday) unless I want to be crank-central; lunch comes when I’m hungry which is normally 4-6 hours after brekkie, but there’s normally a mid-morning snack in there somewhere; sometimes I have a mid-afternoon snack or space my lunch out into different times, depending on how ravenous i am!; dinner comes when it comes…but it always comes :)
I’ve not done an exercise video but I have tried online yoga podcasts and despite being skeptical, they are awesome!!
Love you and your ratios xxx
Quick question – how big is the serving size of your crockpot meal? Daily Plate just says 1 serving but doesn’t say what that serving is. I’m assuming it’s a cup, but there’s really no way to tell.
I use Calorie King and b/c I’m doing Belly Fat Cure, my stats are way different but it’s working so I’m not complaining. I will probably end up with more BFL stats once I get to goal weight and increase my training.
Seriously, you explain the hard stuff really well!
PS Poor chicken!!!!!!!!!
it is 1/4 of the recipe. way more than a cup!
I eat pretty much the same as you! I always like to pair protein with carb. I used to enter stuff into a program like the daily plate, but it acutally drove me crazy! I got way to obsessed with it, so I stopped and started eating more intuatively and its working! lean proteins, protein powders around my workouts, lots of fruits veggies and WHOLE GRAINS!
the insanity DVD sounds awesome! I wish i had more room in my apt and I would be hooked I know it! post the video marshall took of you doing it!! I would love to doa guest post for you!!! ill email you :)
I love how you are so detailed with everything in your posts, you dont just say what you eat and thats that, its no wonder why you have so many readers and followers, you ROCK!
ahh so sad about the chicken getting run over :(
love you!
Janetha, WOW!! This is such a wonderful post…probably the LONGEST post i’ve ever spent on any blog post in the blogworld because it got me to think so much (in a great way of course!). It applies to all people even if they aren’t on the BFL plan. I just read the Clean Eating diet by Tosca Rena and she also promotes 5-6 small meals a day AND always eating a protein + a complex carb. To make it sound even MORE like body for like, she preaches the palm/fist method too and teaches you to eyeball. I love that there are so many similarities!! And thankyou for teaching us/me how to calculate our stats!!!! I don’t have a certain ratio I go by, but I DEFINITELY know it’s heavy on the carbs and light on the protein. Time for a change huh? :P
EW!! I’m sorry so many people didn’t mail the secret valentine gifts. :( *sigh* How can they just expect to get a gift but not give in return? MY goodness!!!! It makes me sad too…boo…
