oh, hello blog.

by Janetha on December 21, 2009

in meals,moves

almost forgot about you ;) i kid.

ahem. first and foremost i would like to say HAPPY FREAKING BIRTHDAY TO MY FAVE EVERYTHINGTARIAN EVVVVER! hope you have had a smashing day my curly haired, long legged, drop dead gorgeous friend :)

also~HAPPY FIRST DAY OF WINTER :D yahoo.

ok. so. holy guacamole.  i have been slacking in the blog department these past couple of days!  my bad.  BUT.. i have been up to lots + lots of fun and delicious things.  instead of rambling i will dive right into the recap head first.  i am not showing you all of it.  you would kill me.  just the highlights.

saturday.

yep! that is where i left off.  saturday night i joined my mom, sister (suni) and sister-in-law (lindsay) for a dinner out and the jon schmidt concert.  he’s this piano dude.

IMG_9779

we ate at the tin angel cafe and it was just about the cutest place  i’ve ever had the opportunity to dine.  some of you old timers may remember when foodbuzz sent me to the share our strength’s taste of the nation back in august.  well, my very favorite thing i tried at the whole event just so happened to be from tin angel cafe!  so i knew dinner was going to be top notch.

IMG_9777

it was freezing outside so, to warm up, i started my meal with some black coffee.

IMG_9782

isn’t the cup and saucer adorable?!  and that is just the beginning of cute-dish-overload.  we ordered the cheese plate as an appetizer~

IMG_9787
Chef’s selection of Imported Cheeses, Fresh Fruit and Nu
ts

IMG_9788
that was probably the fanciest cheese plate ever to grace my presence.  my favorite was the brie.  the gorgonzola hurt my tongue a little (i have geographic tongue) and the other cheese was something i am not familiar with.  it was an italian cheese that reminded me of asiago but was not as nutty, sharp or pungent.  it was delicious.  the pine nuts were also a favorite of mine.

IMG_9792

for our entrees, we all decided to get something different so we could snag bites of each others’ dishes.

janetha b’s:

IMG_9801

Pumpkin & Goat’s Cheese Farfalle with Shrimp Skewers

IMG_9800

Puree of Pumpkin blended with Goat’s Cheese, White Wine, and Cream then tossed with Farfalle Pasta and topped with Herb Grilled Shrimp Skewers, Red Pepper Confit, and Crispy Panchetta.

go ahead and drool at that description alone.. because i did.  i checked the menu out before we went and already knew this is what i would be ordering!  there were big chunks of pumpkin throughout the pasta and i am a huge fan of goat cheese mixed with pumpkin.  the roasted red peppers and bacon also blended fabulously with the rest of the dish.  A+!

momma b’s:

IMG_9794
this was the special and i have no idea what they called it.  but it was seared scallops with a basil risotto cake and steamed veggies.
uh-maze-ing.

IMG_9795

the basil risotto cake was my favorite.  i loved how it was crispy on the outside and packed a strong basil flavor (one of my favorite herbs!).  this dish had the best presentation by far!

IMG_9786

lindsay b’s:

IMG_9796

Spinach Salad with Poached Pear and Gorgonzola

Fresh Organic Baby Spinach, sliced Pear, Grape Tomatoes, and Gorgonzola Cheese topped with Candied Almonds and Citrus Lavender Vinaigrette.

this reminded us a bit of the pear salad we made on thanksgiving.  it was really good~i have decided pear and gorgonzola are a match made in heaven!

suni m’s:

IMG_9798

Chicken Al Forno

House-Breaded Organic Chicken baked and striped with Roasted Garlic Tomato Pomodoro and topped with Shaved Parmesan-Reggiano and served with Broccolini and Fresh Linguine tossed in Olive and Truffle Oil.

another winner.  as if i was surprised!  i loved the breading on the chicken, it was very flavorful and added incredible texture.  the shaved cheese on top was a nice touch.

IMG_9778

i loved how all the plates were different!  they were all old, antiquey plates and the silverware was the same way.

IMG_9784
super cute.

IMG_9807

the walls were adorned with jewelry which was for sale.

the bill came with four mini cookies that tasted like almond rum biscotti.

IMG_9804

thank you tin angel, i will be back.

image

the concert was good.. but long.. i mean i just don’t think i am wired to love 3 hours straight of piano music.  but it was still a good time and fun to spend time with my fam!  thanks mom, sure do love you :)

sunday.

  IMG_9826

sunday funday! snowboarded my face off for a few hours…

IMG_9816 IMG_9817 IMG_9823

and then decided to pick my face up and glue it back on so i could eat this banging chicken quesadilla..

IMG_9939
i layered laughing cow light, sharp cheddar, chicken, TJ’s black bean dip and TJ’s corn salsa all on a whole wheat tortilla.

IMG_9934

grilled it up.

IMG_9937

sliced it into quarters and had some salsa on the side.. bon appetit!  a delicious lunch that took me about 5 minutes to make.

IMG_9941

sunday night i made 125 cookies.. 4 different kinds.  i made chocolate chip with red & green dark chocolate m&ms instead of chips, snickerdoodles, peanut butter cookies and pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.

and i didn’t take photos.  sorry.  i ended up putting them into really cute gift bags and giving them to my co-workers today.  hope you can imagine how cute they were :)

monday.

oh, that’s today!  see how speedy this recap has been?  well the meals were all pretty typical.. egg scrambles and greek yogurt messes.. but dinner was fab!  today happens to be national hamburger day so i had to go with it and whip up a nice, juicy burger!

IMG_0007

i used 91% lean ground beef and kept it simple, seasoning it with only salt & pepper.

the star of the show was this basil & garlic gouda..

IMG_0001

YUM.  i LOVE me some gouda!  and like i said earlier, basil is one of my favorite herbs.  i had to buy this cheese when i saw it!

IMG_0004

on the burger: mustard, ketchup, spinach, red onion, avocado & tomato.  simple and perfect.

 IMG_0005

oh and guess what!  kailey you would be proud.  momma b whipped up her very first batch of cheetahs!

IMG_9950
mmm. spotted bites of heaven.

IMG_0009

moves.

my workout today was mediocre at best.  but hey~at least i did something..right? something is better than nothing.  and i am lucky to have made it onto that treadmill considering how busy i am this week!  so i am stoked.
20 minute hills routine:

  • 1 min warmup 4 MPH incline=0
  • incline=15
  • 1 min 2.0 MPH
  • 1 min 2.5 MPH
  • 1 min 3.0 MPH
  • 1 min 3.5 MPH
  • 1 min 4.0 MPH
  • 1 min 4.5 MPH
  • repeat three times
  • cooldown 1 min 3.0 MPH incline=0

so yeah, the speeds were wimpy.. but the incline was 15% (which is the max my treadmill will go) so it ended up being a great workout!  full on sweat sesh for sure.

well kids.  that is seriously all i’ve got for tonight. no rambles, no stories.  just the facts.  sorry to be such a bore but i still have a lot to do tonight AND a sick boyf to attend to!  poor bear.

i will be back tomorrow with (hopefully) something more exciting to say.
OH but for your enjoyment, if you want to see the funniest rachael ray parody EVER you should definitely click right here, right now.  i am serious.  so worth your time, so funny!

oh and P.S. i haven’t read blogs since saturday.  just sayin.  i will get there.

HOLY SHEEEET.  christmas is on friday!

Qs~
1. in honor of national hamburger day~what is your favorite hamburger/veggie burger/turkey burger/etc topper?
mine is, hands down, sautéed mushrooms.

2.  favorite season and why? winter is my favorite for sure. i LOVE snow and snowboarding and i love all the holidays that winter brings.. christmas, new years, GROUNDHOG DAY! um, isn’t that everyone’s fave?

xo. janetha b.

Stef @ moretolifethanlettuce December 21, 2009 at 11:54 pm

1. fave veggie burger topper: avocado or homemade tzatziki sauce

2. autumn. the leaves!

Karin December 22, 2009 at 12:16 am

That dinner looks so lovely! I’m getting super jealous over here though, I want to go snowboarding as well!!

1. I don’t have a favourite topping but my moto is the more the merrier.

2. Spring for sure. :)

crunchygranolagal December 22, 2009 at 2:30 am

ahhh envious of the boarding action! i want to get out on the slopes SO badly – hopefully this weekend!

and that quesadilla is bangin’. yep, i said it – bangin’,

1. mmm i’d have to go with fresh mozzarella. mmm good.

2. springtime. cuz i like long, sunny and warm days.

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is December 22, 2009 at 4:56 am

I loooove bacon and cheese on my burgers. I also love winter, but fall would probably be my favorite. Love the weather.

Lauren December 22, 2009 at 4:56 am

Hey you! I’ve missed my daily dose of Janetha! :) So glad you are back in my life this morning.

I actually have been meaning to ask you something. I remember you mentioned that the Mighty Maple Peanut Butter may be discountinued. Are you still able to find it around you? I have NEVER seen it in the stores around me, almost every other flavor, but not the Mighty Maple. I actually got mine at a Whole Foods store in MD a few months ago. Anyways, mine is frighteningly low and I am so scared that I won’t be able to enjoy my favorite thing on earth ever again.

So….I have a little proposition for you my love. I am going to TJ’s in a few weeks. If there is any needed product/s that you would like, I would be so happy to pick them up for you. And if you happen to see a jar of Mighty Maple, would you be interested in doing a little exchange?? Some Tj’s products for a jar of MM? :)

Have a wonderful day my darling girl!

Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) December 22, 2009 at 4:56 am

Love all the food!

My favorite burger topping is tied: sauteed mushrooms and cheese. I love cheese…

And Fall is my favorite season! I love when it gets a bit cooler and I can wear sweaters… and the changing leaves! Spring is a close second.

Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) December 22, 2009 at 4:58 am

Abby (Nibble, Nourish, Run) December 22, 2009 at 5:24 am

Ashley December 22, 2009 at 5:27 am

look at you and your gorgeous curls in your hair! the restaurant looks so gooood :) makin me want that cheese plate lol

Susan December 22, 2009 at 5:45 am

I love your hair in those pics! Your family is gaaawww-juss!! Confession – I can’t do walking hill routines on the treadmill. I don’t know why, I think it’s the whole sweating while walking thing, and I prefer a little bounce in my step ;)

1. Relish!! Although the best quote ever is from Alton Brown while helping someone put together a hamburger – “This is a burger, not a salad.” I try to remember that when assembling mine – it’s all about the meat!

2. Spring. I love how fresh and rejuvenating it feels, and knowing there is nothing but warm months ahead :)

April December 22, 2009 at 5:53 am

I love fall, then when spring comes I love it. I’m not a winter person.

Ketchup and mustard the few times I eat hamburger.

That RR episode was SO funny and SO true!!! I want to see one of Barefoot Contessa….gosh I can’t stand her!

Andrea@WellnessNotes December 22, 2009 at 5:53 am

Looks like you’ve been having lots of fun! :)

1. I have so many favorite toppings: avocado slices, corn salsa, sauteed mushrooms, sauteed onions, cheese!…. :)
2. I love summer. I’m usually off work for a while. Plus, it’s not really winter here as it never snows… I miss snow, so if I lived somewhere where it snowed, winter may be my favorite season…

Emily (The Experimentarian) December 22, 2009 at 5:55 am

Loveeeeee youuuuuuu Janetha B! Thanks for the review of Tin Angel. looks a little fancy shcmancy for Dustin, but I guess that’s what friends (or sisters) are for!
Burger=bbq sauce
Season= not winter!!!!!! I actually do love Summer. Summer. Summer. Summer. For about the three weeks we have it here. ;)
xoxo

Abby December 22, 2009 at 6:04 am

Based on your pictures, I would like to say that I my favorite veggie burger topping would have to be seared scallops and a baked risotto cake…holy yum!
But I jest…probably mushrooms and a great cheese–Muenster, maybe?

Favorite season–summer. No questions asked.

Justine December 22, 2009 at 6:15 am

WOW!! That food from Tin Angel looks A freaking MAZING!! I love me some Brie and Gorgonzola. Probably my two fav cheeses. In fact I have been making a baked brie appetizer to take to all my holiday parties. I haven’t met a person who doesn’t love it :).

By the way you and your are gorgeous!!

~Justine

inmytummy December 22, 2009 at 6:20 am

Paige @ Running Around Normal December 22, 2009 at 6:36 am

Tin Angel looks amazing! *Drools*
So glad you got to hit up the slopes :-D You look so happy!!
My favorite topping has got to be guac/avocado. It can go on about anything, too!

ksgoodeats December 22, 2009 at 6:56 am

Hope the boyfriend is feeling better!! My favorite season is fall – looooooove fall so much!

Best topping? Hm….extra sharp cheddar?! You know I love my cheese. That gouda sounds so gouda!

Lindsay December 22, 2009 at 7:09 am

Looove all the cute dishes and amaze looking food from that cafe!

Whit December 22, 2009 at 7:21 am

I loooooove summer. The lake. Wakeboarding. The beach. Sunshine. My birthday. Ok, the last one is not an actual reason I love summer. But the first four are.

Quinn December 22, 2009 at 7:26 am

I love those old plates and silverware! Gorgeous and so unique!

Why do your 5 minute meals look so beautiful?!?! Mine look like a disaster comparatively.

1. A perfect tomato is the best burger topping IMO.
2. Fall is my favorite. The smells, the crunching of the leaves, football, apple cider, pumpkins – the best!

I think I need to come out to SLC so you can teach me how to snowboard!

Megan December 22, 2009 at 7:42 am

Ahh your dinner at The Angel Cafe looks amazing! I LOVE cheese :)

1. Favorite hamburger topper.. avocado!!

1) Best burger topping…sauteed onions and mushrooms. Or British coleslaw (made with mayo). Ketchup is a given. Ack, and cheese. Pesto and mozzarella are good too. I could eat burgers all day lng.

louisianagrown December 22, 2009 at 9:29 am

I’ve never eaten at a restaurant with mixed up dishes like that, but it’s totally how I plan to do my own kitchen one day!

And my favorite hamburger topper is pickles. My dad calls me pickleodeon and they joke that I like to have some pickle with a side of burger. I even snacked on some this morning while I was making my lunch to bring to work!

HealthySDLiving December 22, 2009 at 9:36 am

Aww I love your dinner–that place is so great!! Mmm I would be all over the scallops and rissoto!
Definitely sounds like a great night with the girls but yea…3 hours of piano issss a lot!!!

Ildie December 22, 2009 at 9:36 am

My favorite burger topping is Avocado. YUM!!!! Though I do love sauteed onions as well.

RunToFinish December 22, 2009 at 9:42 am

Anne December 22, 2009 at 9:53 am

That cafe looks so cute! Love the snowboarding pics, and the quesadilla.

1) Sauteed onions :)

2) Fall! Michigan Fall, that is. The trees are sooo gorgeous and I love the crisp, cool air. I love Winter for the holidays, though :)

Sweet and Fit December 22, 2009 at 10:37 am

Also, my favorite veggie burger topping would be caramelized onions and sauteed mushrooms. nom nom nom

tangerinesandmarmalade December 22, 2009 at 11:51 am

You and your mom are adorbs. And uh, pumpkin pasta? Drool.
Fav veggie burger topping has gotta be the hummus!

marie December 22, 2009 at 12:58 pm

Fave burger toppings are pepperjack cheese & avocado.
Fave season is spring. It’s not too hot, and things are growing.

Erin December 22, 2009 at 1:34 pm

You had me at the fruit plate and the ball of risotto.

Holykrap!!

snackface December 22, 2009 at 1:39 pm

I physically gasped aloud when I saw my name hyperlinked above your mama’s beautiful face! LOVE!!!

I also laughed aloud when you said you put your face back on so you could eat that insanely delicious-looking quesadilla. So yum. (Yea, I know that’s chicken, but still!)

So I had no idea what my fave burger topping is other than ketchup, so I scrolled up and HOLLY is so on-point! BBQ sauce all day long!

My fave season is summer. I love wearing little to no clothing (shocking, right?), being hot rather than cold, frollicking in the sunshine, driving the convertible with the top back, drinking a cold brew in the sun, enjoying how happy everyone else is as well, eating lots of watermelon and refreshing fruits and veg…I miss it!

Have a faaaaab start to the week and enjoy blog reading! LOVE YOUUUU!!!! xoxoxoxo

lowandbhold December 22, 2009 at 1:41 pm

That restaurant looks adorable! Love it.

Your burger also looks fantastic!

1. My burger must have mucho ketchup. But I’m an equal opportunity topper: guac, cheese, onions, cold tomato (has to be cold), pickles. It’s all good.

2. Summer. Hate hate hate winter! Love you though :) Glad you got some snowboarding in!

Katie December 22, 2009 at 1:52 pm

My goodness, these pics are making me DROOL!

1 – Burger – CHEESE and RAW ONION

jenngirl December 22, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Looks like you’re having a blast! Definitely a great way to kick off Christmas WEEK! :) And wow, congrats on making all those cookies, damn girl ;)

1. I love condiments-ketchup and mustard NO mayo, and BIG juicy tomato slices! Definitely lean ground beef for me as well :)

2. I do love winter, but I always get spring fever so I’m torn. And I hate decisions. I like winter because of the cute boots and sweaters, there.

Jenny December 22, 2009 at 5:11 pm

125 cookies?! Janethaaaa.. do you have a secret life as a Keebler Elf? I won’t tell anyone.

ahh looks like you made yourself a dang quesadillar (name that movie, I know you can) it looks phenom! I am so bitter that I don’t have a trader joe’s in my area or else I would recreate that delicioso-ness in a hot minute!

p.s. so in love with your christmas card.. can’t stop starin’ at it :)

Jenny December 22, 2009 at 5:12 pm

bah, quesadilla*** must’ve had caterpillars on the brain or something.

I’m strange.

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) December 22, 2009 at 5:38 pm

I want to see your whole outfit when you went to mr new age piano man’s concert- love the hat and the top part. The eats there look amazing. But I’m a total hussy for scallops- my fave seafood.

And your food since last week? Yes, I’ll have some cheese topped with cheese and a side of cheese…please :-)

Awww hope Marshall feels better!

I love your colorful goggles- I want to snowboard just so that I can wear cool goggles like that! And only YOU can pull off dayglow green sunglasses. The advantages of being cool- you can wear and ROCK absolutely ANYTHING!

Wow, you’re a baking FOOL! I should know I’m a nut butter making fool. Ah well, it’s that time of year don’tcha know.

The Rachael Ray thing was hilarious- love the bad wig and the chicken broth with the marshmallows, not to mention the two tablespoons of oil (really 2 cups). HIlarious!

Sorry about the addy mixup. Doh. I’ll get your new address for the next giftie. <3

Adi (oatonomy.com) December 22, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Can I be boring and say ketchup, mustard and relish are my fave toppings?

And if I’m feeling really wild, then some avocado is always good.

Jenna December 22, 2009 at 8:56 pm

everyones’ meals look delish!
your quesadilla looks sooo great!
glad you had a nice lokin hamburger in celebration :0
jenna

Katharina December 22, 2009 at 9:49 pm

You and your mother are so gorgeous! And together? RADIATING! I really want to snowboard with you BUT FIRST you’d have to teach me lol. That restaurant looks sooo cute and I love how they had different plates and everything. It’s like you’re eating at someone’s home.. and the host happens to be a wonderful chef ;) How lucky! Oh my I haven’t had TJ’s corn salsa in forever! There is no TJ’s in Florida (SAY WHAT?!) so I’ll have to pick it up when I go back up to VA… to the cold weather lol.

1. Hmm.. favorite veggieburger topper? Avocado, red onion slices, lettuce, tomato + mayo, and corn!

2. I love spring because everytime I walk outside I can’t help but look up at the sky and take a deep breath and then admire all the beauty around me. It seriously revitalizes me like nothing else.
