so i am currently watching the food network and unwrapped is on.. and it is the episode from 2005 called “extreme”. it is showcasing a dude-tucker shaw-who made a BOOK out of everything he ate in a year. it is called “everything i ate”~have you guys seen this episode?! it is the epitome of a food blogger. you simply must check it out. i found myself nodding along to everything tucker said as they interviewed him about why he did the book. hah~it even said that a flash going off in a dark restaurant is “like a siren blaring in the streets”.. ain’t it the truth?! i googled him and you can check out an interview about the book here. funny stuff.
one thing he said is: “Food magazines are like fashion magazines: They celebrate what’s beautiful, new, or unusual, but very rarely report on what people really wear or eat. If people in the future rely on current food-related media, they’ll think that we eat nothing but ramps and pork bellies all day. Or McDonald’s and Chips Ahoy and low-carb cupcakes. The truth is much broader.”
touché. food blogs definitely do a great job of showcasing what people really eat, rather than food magazines that showcase fancy recipes or advertisements for prepackaged foods.
anyway, it is a really interesting interview if you are into food blogs.. which you are, or you would definitely not be reading this.. so check it out!
okay so anyway. this is going to be short.. first off i got home really late and then second off i lollygagged before dinner then third off right after dinner my favorite everythingtarian called and we chatted for AN HOUR which seemed like five minutes. no really. and then i watched that episode of unwrapped and now it is 10:07 PM. woops!
guess what today was? national maple syrup day. i did the best i could and celebrated with some mighty maple protein oats!
mmmmmapleicious.
lunch was nothing short of amazing because it was leftover christmas pasta and just like a fine wine, leftover pasta gets better with time. don’t you agree?
how festive.
i was going to pump some iron right after work so right around 4 o’clock i had myself a pre-workout protein packed snack of oikos+shredded spoonfuls+cinnamon+chocolate pb2+pistachio shells
oh and look! back at my own desk. home sweet home.
see that empty water bottle? don’t worry. i filled it up before devouring my pistachio shells greek yogurt mess~
muuuuuch better.
oh yeah. about the shells.
apparently i didn’t get all of the pistachio shells out of the cereal box yesterday. good thing i caught this guy before chomping down on him!
and yes, in case you were wondering, pistachio shells are boys.
you have no idea how excited i was to do a lower body workout today. my favorite thing to do! yesss!

got home and didn’t have to worry about making dinner!
i spent seven minutes this morning preparing dinner for tonight. SO worth it! on the menu? taco soup! in the pot:
- 1 lb ground chicken (browned before placing in pot)
- 1 can black beans, drained 15 oz
- 1 can kidney beans, drained 15 oz
- 1 can corn with juices 11 oz
- 1 can diced green chiles 4 oz
- 1 can diced tomatoes with juices 28 oz
- 1 can tomatoes and chiles with juices 11 oz
- 1 taco seasoning packet
- 1 hidden valley ranch seasoning packet
cooked it on low for 10 hours..
and then all i had to do when i got home was chop some cilantro~
add it to the pot~
lay a whole wheat tortilla down in a bowl.. ladle the soup.. dollop ‘o’ daisy.. sprinkle of cheddar.. and dinner is served!
i am still trying to find the best spot to photograph my dinner. this was my entryway table.
ha.
i love taco soup.
actually i love all mexican food. i don’t discriminate. it got even better when i mixed the sour cream in..
sometimes the most delicious food is not the prettiest.
muy bueno :)
and THEN the lovely holly called me and we talked the night away. and marshall did this:
awe. sorry babe. i have a bloggette crush on holly and there was much to discuss! maybe she will find you some packer stuff.. oh crap, i already can’t remember who his fave green bay player is.. oops.. i fail at football stuff.
oh he looks so sad, it breaks my heart. marshall is a really good sport when it comes to me and my blogging habit. sometimes there is tension when it takes up a lot of my time.. but hey, at least it’s not crack ;) i am sure there are worse things i could be addicted to. but i have been trying to tone down the blog factor as of late.
side note, check out marshall’s tattoo of randy pants on his right arm. i don’t like tattoos but i <3 that one.
anyway! that is that. this turned out to be longer than i thought it would be. and it is 10:58 so that was almost a solid hour of typing. i should go. the dogs are bored:
or maybe just sleepy. i know i am. time for bed!
YAY friday tomorrow! and then not one but TWO three day work weeks in a row. it feels like christmas!! oh wait.. it IS christmas! holler.
Qs~
1. what is your favorite kind of soup? what about your favorite mexican dish? i had the best of both worlds with my taco soup tonight.
2. do your blog writing/reading habits ever get in the way of any relationships? take too much time? bother those around you? how do you deal? discuss.

Yummm sure looks like a better meal than my roasted chicken yuck! Yes it is Christmas!
Enchiladas Suizas double yum! I’m a blogger failure but I read everyone elses xoxo!
^^hi mom!^^
TACO SOUP! double-yum factor. I might make this one!
1. I love all soups, great and small. But absolute faves include Borscht, Kharcho, black bean, and Pho. Mexican… I love me a good taco! And even though not so healthy, flautas! They taste sooo good!
2. Yes, I have let blogging get in the way before, but I tried to compromise and do all blogging in the day to be with the homies at night… Now… No homies, and less blogging. What gives??
Also, I’m glad I copied on the “double yum”? Whoops. I am easily impressionable.
I’m obsessed with your elephant sweater!… I guess I have a thing for big ears because that elephant is adorable and I also have a basset hound. She’s the love of my life, but your doggies are pretty darn cute too ;)
Rachael*
Just realized the link above is to a wordpress account I made before learning that I’m waay not tech-savvy enough to handle that craziness.. So sorry about that! Here’s the real blog: rubyconverseandcurls.blogpsot.com
Love the elephant jacket/pullover/whatever! Can I steal it??
That soup looks so good. I love Mexican food!
Q1: Any kind of soup that has no cream (or meat) in it. And oh Mexican food.. Where to begin? Well I probably love nachos with guac and fajitas the most.
Q2: I think that my boyfriend’s also sometimes annoyed but I try to blog when I’m on my own and not bothering anyone.. Taking photos of dinner is an other thing. My fam thinks it’s amusing so that’s cool :).
What a great episode. Sorry I missed that one.
Taco soup looks awesome! Don’t you just love the wonders of the slow cooker. I love when an appliance can make the dinner for you.
I think my favorite kind of soup would be a nice chili. My favorite has to be Pumpkin Black Bean Chili. But I also adore the seafood soups as a splurge. Like Creamy Crab or Lobster Chowder! Umm…..yum!
Sometimes, I think I take up too much time on the computer, but I dunno, I guess when you are married and live with your sig. other, you see them every free moment so taking some time to do the things for me are a must! But don’t get me wrong, finding time for each other is essential as well!
Have a great weekend darling girl!
Your crock pot looks like someone “dinged it in a parking lot”…I know there is a story here…:0)
That soup looks so good! I love enchiladas…I usually make them once a week or so.
Blogging does consume alot of time, but I really enjoy it. I tend to take bigger breaks on the weekend and make up for it then.
I reeeally need to get my hands on some Mighty Maple. Might be giving you an e-mail about a switcheroo cuz, uh, I am drooling over here.
That taco soup sounds amaaaaze. Love soup in the winter.
Fave soup: French Onion. But chili is a close second.
Fave mexi dish: Burrritos!
Sometimes blogging does take up time, but I don’t let it get in the way of my life. I enjoy it a lot so it doesn’t feel like a long time.
Nick thinks I’m a bit crazy, but he knew what he was getting into ;) He is really supportive. Sometimes when I’m laying around being lazy he’ll go “GO BLOG! Or else you’ll fall asleep and won’t!”. It happens frequently when he is around, actually. He brings out the lazy in me. LOL
My family/friends are cool about it too. Some ignore it, but many of my close friends read the blog, and my mom actually talks about me and the blog to her work friends, and they think it’s pretty cool!
So those are my thoughts. ONE WEEK til christmas! Yayyy! =)
xo
K
I love that taco soup! I think I am going to copy you. I just have to find whole wheat tortillas that don’t hurt my stomach (stupid soy).
Now that Dustin is finished with all his grad school stuff, I definitely have cut back on the blogging a little. But I think he may start studying for the GMAT soon, so who knows? ;)
P.S. kind of jealous you got to talk to holly! xoxo
That show/book sounds awesome! You’re so right about food blogs showcasing what real healthy-minded people are eating out there.
I love the Christmas pasta!! :-D I want to make some NOW. It’s been a while since I’ve eaten green noodles.
Holy workout! Your legs have got to be killer, girl. With that workout, I wouldn’t be able to walk! Rock it, Janetha :)
chili is my favorite soup, with tons of beans and veggies!
I try to spend less time blogging or reading blogs when i’m with my family because this time is precious for me! :D
Oh good old tomato soup is probably my favorite…or butternut squash! Um and my favorite Mexican food…chips & guac!! Oh and margs of course!
I saw that book in the store- interesting stuff! Haha. He had some awesome eats over the year!
1. what is your favorite kind of soup? what about your favorite mexican dish? Soup- pasta fagiole (sp?) It’s like a crazy thick minestrone with beans in it (half the beans are pureed which makes it thick). Topped with cheese = heaven. Mexican- I have only eaten real Mexican food once and had a spinach and mushroom quesadilla which was incredible. I love Amy’s burritos though!
2. do your blog writing/reading habits ever get in the way of any relationships? take too much time? bother those around you? how do you deal? discuss. No relationships and not blogging right now, but I could totally see why it might become and issue. Pretty time-consuming :/
LOVE chicken fajitas! I need to get a crockpot-that thing is genious! just throw in ingredients and head to work and BAM dinner is made! your taco soup looks great and love how its served in a whoel wheat tortilla :)
AMAZING workout, i would love to pump some iron with you, then finish with a post workout meal, created by YOU
yes, blogging sometimes does get in the way of relationships, someimtes if I am in the middle of a realyl good post or want to post something at that instant, and the BF wants to do something, I tell him I need 10 minutes, its nothing major, but its just amazing how dedicated you can become to blogging!
doggys are SO CUTE!! :)
EEk your crazy loving lower body workouts! haha. That chili looks really good.. I’ve been obsessed with ground turkey lately!
You have such great work outs!
I wish I had a gym buddy like you to motivate me! I do work out with a group of people at work which is nice but it’s good to have people to motivate you, try new moves, recipes, etc…
Any fav work out songs lately?
I am going to ask for people to post some on my blog tonight….What’s a workout without good music?!
Happy Friday,
Katie
Girl you are a social butterfly ;)
1. Hmm.. favorite soup may be butternut squash! And Mexican food? Bean burrito + sweet potato !! Or veggie fajitas.
2. Mmm no I try to make sure that if life is calling that I close my laptop. It’s hard to sometimes though because I want to read! lol
p.s. did you know that they sale little baking molds so you can have a crispy taco shell bowl?
http://www.ohonemorething.wordpress.com
That interview does sound interesting! And I do agree.
So jealous of that lower body workout, I really want to get more into my strength training!
1. Love taco soup! But also I LOVE the “white chicken chili” I made last night :) And fajitas are my favorite mexican, I love adding different things in each one.
2. I don’t think my own blog interfers, but I probably spend a lot of time reading and commenting (because I love you guys!), which probably is time I could be spending elsewhere. But like most things, there is a way to strike a balance :) And my parents love when I take pics for the blog, I think they think it’s funny.
I’ve seen that episode – so cool, right? :)
LOVE Holly – how fun to chat with her for an hour :)
1. what is your favorite kind of soup? anything homemade! hard to beat bean soups or homemade chicken noodle.
what about your favorite mexican dish?ugh, anything? I love Mexican food. AUTHENTIC Mexican food.
2. do your blog writing/reading habits ever get in the way of any relationships? take too much time? bother those around you?
not really…I mean, I blog right before eating and I think nick is kind of used to it right now. Sometimes, especially on weekends, I don’t spend nearly as much time on the computer because we’re doing other things, going out, etc.
i love you. that’s all i really want to say.
(1) fave soup….hmmm i do love me some old school clam chowder. fave mexican = fajitas, hands down.
(2) since i have no significant other and live alone, i haven’t run into any problems. however, if i ever did get a BF, i think it would be hard. luckily (or unluckily, not sure which one, haha), i haven’t had to deal with that yet :)
I want a crock pot so badly! Ease = amaze.
So lovely that you got to chat it up with Holly.
Back when I was posting daily, the boy would get slightly pooped by the amount of time I was spending on the computer…but he was a pretty good sport about it and never complained.
In the end, I didn’t want to spend that much time doing it and I deal by blogging less! Case in point, the last two crazy weeks! Ay ay aye!
Soup is amazing. I love spicy black bean types and lentil types. A lot. oh and pho. Mmmm.
Yay for Christmas soon!! x
Wow I totally made taco soup, almost exactly like yours a few days ago!! AND I’m planning on having the leftovers tonight…So GOOD!
I blog when I have time and don’t worry about it. It shouldn’t be stressful, it should be fun!
I was so surprised to hear you don’t like tats!!!!
My fave soup is Chicken Noodle. I’m just old school like that.
Have you ever had Max & Erma’s taco soup? That’s what your dinner reminds me of and it’s AMAZE! I love that you used a tortilla in a bowl. I used to be all about Panera’s broccoli soup – that stuff is gooooooood!
It is way to hard to name my favorite soup. I like so many of them. Soup is one of my favorite food groups ;)
wow that xmas pasta is sooo photogenic! i bet it tasted as good as it looks too! interesting about that interview, i should check it out. national maple syrup day? i figured only canada would celebrate that but i’m happy to jump on board!! :)
YUM that soup looks right up my alley.
I love Marshall’s tattoo. I turned my laptop upside down to get a better look at it. lol
I have stared at the Randy+Marshall picture for at least five minutes. Thought I should actually comment instead of stare. I’m a creep.
I can’t detect the Randy tat!
I love love love might mapes+oats. It’s just so perf.
Hmm my favorite soup is the stoup MamaJ makes with butternut squash, corn, beans, bell pepper and amazingness. I could eat it for days.
I tend not to want to blog when I’m home in Cincinnati because I want to be spending time with my family. I don’t want to interrupt the conversations, laughter, love, life to type for an hour. My family totally understands when I do, though, and they even encourage it, I think. MamaJ helps me come up with titles for posts, lol. She also delivers snacks and wine while I type. Shoooo, I should blog when home more often!
I hope you’re feeling fab and that you have a wonderful weekend! YOUR the best. Kidding. YOU’RE the best. LOVE YOU!!!
Thanks for the info on that book, it sounds really interesting. I would love if someday this little foodie community got the attention it deserves. We could be such the inspiration!
1) I LOVE quesadillas but sometimes there’s just too much cheese. Once of my favorite dishes is at a local Mexican place that makes their own tortillas. It’s a spinach and cheese enchilada w/blue corn torillas. Soo good.
2) Oh man, my husband HATES my blogging habit. He gets so embarrassed when I whip out the camera in public so I just stick to using my iPhone instead. We’re going to his mom’s house for Christmas and I’m bummed that I won’t be able to document any of it. But truthfully, I don’t want my in-laws to know about the blog anyway so I guess it all works out. My parents, on the other hand, LOVE it. They encourage me to photograph everything and constantly talk about my blog when we’re together. Obviously Dave has never even read it so he’s totally in the dark when we do talk about it.
Fav Mexican food? Probably a bean burrito! And amazing guac. Fav soup = white chili.
That’s subject to change tho.
I’ve cut my blogging back to a point where it’s FUN. When it was stressing me out, I quit it until I got my head together and realized it’s a hobby, not a job, lol.
That unwrapped episode sounds super interesting!!
The picture of Marshal is hilarious. Poor guy ;)
1. Mexi food = any and all really. I LOVE IT!. Soup = corn chowder, potato or lentil. Yum!
2. My singleness allows me to devote as much obsessive time to blogging as I would like, haha, But my friends kind of get tired of hearing about it I think.
I don’t like I have a favorite soup…I LOVE soup too much to pick one! My favorite Mexican food, I must admit, is carna asada burritos…grilled steak, salsa, and guac in a fresh tortilla. San Diego does Mexican food RIGHT, that’s for sure!
There was a point where my blogging (and blog reading/commenting) was cutting into by boy time and it was starting to cause problems. So I just cut back, or tried to blog when he was in night class, etc. Blogging stressed me out for awhile and then I realized that it’s just for fun, my hobby, so if I don’t give it 100% that’s OK.
Mmm taco soup! What an awesome idea of putting that tortilla in the bowl…never thought of that! Cutie pups!
i’m preetttttty sure that your taco soup would rank in my top favs ;) BUT until i try it, it has to 100% be tjs butternut squash soupsies :)
you mean marshmellow doesnt understand that you’re in a relationship with 50 other people…
i love your boys tats!! haha i really do!!
that taco soup looks pretttttyyyyy dang delish
Janetha…will you be my personal chef and trainer?!?! Man you’re so awesome and so meticulous about blogging/recording stuff…oh boy this is going to turn into one of those gushing comments.
I have a love for that cereal too but i never buy it cuz i can go through a box in a few days. EEK. :P
My blogging used to get in the way of my bf and I cuz he just didn’t understand why we couldn’t watch tv “properly” or eat at a restaurant without me taking pictures…but he’s gotten used to it and knows that it means a lot to me. :)
Have you seen Julie & Julia? The blogging part really hit home for me (except the part where she got super popular, etc.)
I wish that episode was on Hulu. I just read the article. I remember back then thinking I would be embarrassed if I ever had to photograph all my food. Now, I would be proud ha
That wrap in a bowl is the best idea EVERR!!! Oh my gosh. It reminds me of bread bowls from Panera! Mmmm!
taco soup??? yummy! I could make it veg, very easily. I should really get a crock pot. Even though I prefer things raw-ish, sometimes a crock pot would be handy!
Blogging in the way of life? Yep. Daily. It kinda consumes me and as much as i try to unplug, i suck at stepping back :) here i am on vacay, typing comments. But for you, anything my love :)
xoxo
I like vegetable soup.
I am super excited for two 3-day work weeks. They just wrote on our work calendar that we have New Years Eve off. Yesssss.
I lOVE that tattoo. I would totally dig a dude who has a tat of his DOG! A softie at heart, obvi!
I love your new boxed in format of recording your workout, which by the way looked killer.
Love me any mexican food- mole is my fave. And the homemade corn tortillas. I should def. eat more soup- It is sooo filling and a good calorie bargain.
Blogging in way of relationships? No, Derek is always on the laptop too. So there we sit in the same room tap tap tap tap. No conflict. I think at first he was a little bit taken aback, but now he likes the blog world. In fact HE reads the blogs. He actually reads blogs I haven’t had time to read and gives me the gossip “hey did you know Kath is on oprah.com” hilarious!
I swear, Unwrapped accounts for 99% of the reason why I don’t get enough sleep at night. How the heck am I supposed to sleep when the dude from Double Dare is telling me how rice krispie treats and peanut butter cups are made?
is it just me, or do your protein oats look extra special today? you must have added an extra tbsp of love :)
speaking of love… I <3 you!
My favorite kind of soup is any homemade by me! Especially if it includes butternut squash which it will tomorrow……..
The lady i live with says I’m blog obsessed but I guess I am so i’m happy! x
You had me with the cilantro. I’m in *love* with cilantro. Seriously. :D It looks delish!
I want your elephant sweater!
Also I make soup all the time but I’m a neanderthal and don’t use a crock.
1. what is your favorite kind of soup? what about your favorite mexican dish? i had the best of both worlds with my taco soup tonight. UMMM I love all soup. right now my fave is the pot of spicy cabbage veggie stew in my fridge! and I’m with you – if it’s mexican, I’ll eat it. prob my fave is a black bean burrito. (no cheese)
2. do your blog writing/reading habits ever get in the way of any relationships? take too much time? bother those around you? how do you deal? discuss. YES. I’m a novelist and I’m addicted to the internet/food&writingblogs so I spend wayyyyy too much time on my computer and sometimes the hubs feels left out – esp as my computer is not in the living room where he typically hangs out. I try to at least get all my writing done before he gets home; I can sacrifice tweeting and blogsurfing for him!
Ooo I’m defintely going to read this article. And adding to my books to read list? YES.
My friends and fam don’t really understand my blogging habits, but they accept it. I do get made fun of though quite a bit. And whenever I have an exciting story to tell, it usually involves blogs/bloggettes. You know the drill. For instance at my dinner table (fabricated for extra emphasis) Me: “OMG. I forgot to telll you! Janetha wrote me this huge ass e-mail, and it made my week.” or “OMG. HEAB commented on one of my posts, I can’t believe it!”
My parents give me that fake, “that’s soo cool!” face. Total parenting fail.
Ooo and your mexican crock pot soup looks killer. I love mexican food- mole, like Deb is a personal fave. And just Mexican flavors in general. Fave soup? Tomato. Definitely.
OMGosh I have seen that episode of unwrapped!! It was before I had a food blog, and I remember thinking to myself…”I want to do that!” – but instead of a book, I now have a blog. Fantastic!
1. I love burritos – I like to throw all sorts of stuff in there, and I also love lentil soup.
2. My blogging habits definitely take a lot of relationship time away – I try to keep it under 30 minutes…but sometimes it goes longer and I just apologize to the hubby a lot, and try to keep my priorities straight…blogging is just too much fun! :-)
