this one’s for the dogs.

in meals

if you have been reading my blog for more than, oh, a day, you know that i am obsessed with dogs.

more specifically, my dogs.. but any dogs will do when it comes to satisfying my obsession with these furry friends.  i have been known to flip out and lay down on the dirty ground just to pet a pooch.

my pups, penny and randy, were recently lucky enough to receive some special treats from their friend krystina at polka dog bakery.

i have to share a little about the bakery before i go on. it is too touching NOT to share.

The Polkadog Story

Polka Dog Bakery is our tribute to Pearl. Found as a stray outside San Juan, Puerto Rico, Pearl had only one eye, which gave her the funny habit of dancing her head from side to side whenever she stopped to say hello. She did a little sort of polka to everyone she met. So Pearl became the Polka Dog, and danced her way into people’s hearts.

Hard living had left our gem in need of a little extra nurturing, and to spoil her properly, we took to baking her gourmet treats. We used the finest ingredients we could find, mixed and matched different recipes, and baked a little love in every bite. And the polka dog bakery was born.

We still use the finest ingredients, and bake and prepare all our delicacies by hand. We now offer these treats to you, for your own four-legged diamond in the rough.

if that is not the most touching story, i don’t know what is.

penny and randy really hit the jackpot with these tasty, fresh, natural treats.

polka dog bakery is based in boston, but they ship their goods all over the place through their online store.

i love the fun shapes.. i am a sucker for cute stuff.

i had a feeling penny was less concerned with the shape or cuteness of the treat and more concerned with the flavor…

you can tell by the look in her eyes.

“stop teasing me, ma.”

it was only fair to do the same taunting and teasing to mister randy dog.

he was licking his chops in anticipation for his super cute star shaped treat.

hahah.. his eyeball cracks me up here.

marshall is working on training the pups. randy is a super good stander.

he can stand on his hind legs for a real long time.

penny is not the best stander around…

but she is working on it!

krystina also sent this grand daddy sized bone.

i am saving it for a day when one dog is really, really bad. i will give it to the other one and make the bad one watch the good one eat it. am i a horrible mother or what?

onto the good stuff.. a giveaway!

polka dog bakery wants to send one of you fine canine lovers a special package of baked goods.

I have a Yellow Lab, Emma and a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Bella. I love everything about my pups. They are constant companions and make me smile every time I see them:) They love to sit in our living room window and look for cats that might be getting a little too close to our house.

I have a yellow labrador name Kosmo AKA Marley. He is always in trouble but once you look at his cute face you can not get mad at him. His favorite thing to eat is dove soap so we have to make sure we close the bathroom door.

I actually have two dogs, a 7 year old cockapoo named Holli and a 6 year old Westiepoo named Willie. They are both extremely close and act a lot like puppies – always super happy and playful. Once, my mom tied their leashes to a tree in the backyard so that she could do some gardening. Holli became anxious because she has to have either my mom, my sister or I in her sights at all times. She then chewed Willie’s leash in half to free him and then chewed her own leash. They both ran to the front to find my mom totally scaring the bonkers out of her. When she told me that story over the phone, I just had to laugh because it sounds just like Holli to do that!

I love my pug Frankie so much!! Specifically great though, is that he loves to share my fruits and vegetables. Eating part of my apple is the highlight of his day.

Mary May 5, 2011 at 10:01 am

I have a Bassett Hound/Chocolate Lab mix (maybe?) named DJ (after Dwayne Johnson – because of her people’s eyebrow skills) that would do anything for a treat. We adopted her in October because her previous owners wouldn’t take care of her and she kept running away.

ps~I love the part about your dogs having no thumbs! I always tease DJ about not being able to do things because she has no thumbs…

I’ve got two special pups…both rescues so we’re not 100% sure what kind of dogs they are. Pele’ is a shepherd with the coat of a black lab and a little chow (you can tell by his tongue) and Buck is part rhodesian ridgeback part boxer (we think…). I absolutely love it when they’re so excited to see me when I get home from work! Buck makes all kinds of crazy noises!! hahaha

Lindsey May 5, 2011 at 10:04 am

I have a boxer mix (we aren’t sure what he is because we rescued him!) named Oakley. He is 6-months old and i LOVE his puppy dog eyes.

Jenny May 5, 2011 at 10:12 am

I have a 1-year old pup named Bailey. He is a little white cockapoo that looks like a cotton ball when he’s fluffy. Sometimes he acts like a cat and curls up on the top of the couches, on top of our pillows in bed & perches on windowsills to look out.

Hannah May 5, 2011 at 10:58 am

i have two doggies! Izzie is a pit bull, and Kiara is a boxer mix. Both are annoying, needy, and stinky but thats why I LOVE them soooo much. :)

Jennifer May 5, 2011 at 11:15 am

We have two black Lab mixes. Nike is 6 and Sadie is 1. We love them so much!

I liked on FB.

I also tweeted!

I love dogs!! I have a little yorkie names Sushi. Yes, I named my dog after a food. Curiously enough it fits her well.

I’ll apologize preemptively; this is going to be a long post because I have SIX dogs to tell you about. Five are our current loves, and one has left us but is incredibly special. Our first dog is Gia, a greyhound. She’s our only girl, and for good reason. She. is. a. BEYOTCH! And we love her for it! Next came Po’boy, another greyhound. We love him because he’s our sweet, stupid ‘potted plant.’ If you don’t like dogs, he’ll change your mind. Then came Moe Moe and Apu, our grumpy crotchety old men. They’re Australian Cattle Dogs (also called Blue Heelers) and they were surrendered to the humane society as a senior bonded pair. Nobody wanted them, so after watching them for months, home they came with us! Gustopher Pudley is our final pup, he’s an American Bulldog/Pit cross. Bullies are my FAVORITE breed, I’ll never have a house without one! Butkus, our Bridge boy, was also an American Bulldog. He left us too soon, but did his part by helping find a cure for cancer! We discovered he had a terminal brain tumor, but had him enrolled in a clinical trial at the University of Minnesota. He received brain surgery AND an experimental treatment for free. While it extended his life by about 8 months, ultimately, he was not a success story. :( But he did a lot for the study, and he’s in the scientific journals for everyone to see!

Vicki May 5, 2011 at 1:20 pm

I have a lovely greyhound named Gemma, whose birthday is TODAY! She turned 6. Funny fact about Miss Gem: her name while she was racing was “Goes Good with Beer.”

Vicki May 5, 2011 at 1:22 pm

Oops, forget to say what I love about her! One of the many things is that she is a great “big spoon” and cuddler (yes, she is huge and is allowed in my bed).

Rachel C May 5, 2011 at 1:27 pm

I have two beautiful dogs: Sydney (Australian Shepherd mix) and Kuma (Akita). I love everything about them, even when they are rotten. Kuma is super stubborn and when we are walking, if he doesn’t like the direction we are going, he will just stop in his tracks. After I try to convince him to keep moving on our current path, I give in and we proceed to move where he wants to go. He has overcome a lot of health issues (and surgeries), so I really don’t mind letting him get his way. ;)

My other dog Sydney, she is in charge of my cats. Anytime they come in to the kitchen, she will run at them and “hen peck” them to move it along. Or if the cats start to play or fight, she comes running to break it up. She doesn’t like any funny business.

Animals are the best. They make me smile everyday. I don’t know where I would be without them.

(I hope my grammar is okay) ;)

Theresa May 5, 2011 at 1:36 pm

I have two dogs – one’s a lab/basset hound mix named George, and the other is a golden retriever named Abby. I love them both so much for their sweetness and unconditional love!

Katie F May 5, 2011 at 1:45 pm

I have two beloved pups. First Flint, he is a 5 year old black and white sheltie, but he wants to be a border collie when he grows up. He herds the neighbor children and is quite a busy man keeping my yard free of all other living beasts. I love how intense he is and how he takes all his jobs so seriously. Second is Torah, she is a 10 month old golden retriever. Torah is a golden to a T, she loves life with a gusto rarely seen. Each and every day is a new opportunity to make a new friend or eat something I would prefer her not to. I love how Torah has no shame in obtaining what her heart desires (mostly food), she is a model in tenaciousness.

Katie May 5, 2011 at 1:45 pm

I have an adorable french bulldog Hugo that you can see on my site ( We live down the street from Polka Dog and he RUNS there as soon as we leave the house! (Side note: Frenchies don’t usually run). They are a great shop and we (Hugo) are big fans of the venison swizzle sticks. Thanks for the great contests!

Holley @ Lunges and Lashes May 5, 2011 at 3:32 pm

That one-eyed dog is KILLING me! Can I give it a huge?!?

Dana May 5, 2011 at 3:54 pm

I have a 2 year old yellow lab named Charlie. I love him because he is the sweetest, most loyal dog I’ve ever met. And he makes me laugh every day!

Beccy May 5, 2011 at 5:27 pm

Tanner is my 120 lb chocolate lab and he is dying to try the polka dog treats!!!!

Susan May 5, 2011 at 6:20 pm

BroccoliHut May 5, 2011 at 6:48 pm

Ah man, Margot would love these!!
I have a brand new Jack Russell Terrier pup, and one thing I love about her is that she shares my appreciation for shoes–she falls asleep every afternoon on my leopard pumps!

Haha! Cracking up at your disclaimer!

Yuki May 5, 2011 at 9:17 pm

I have a German Shepherd named Maya!
I love her because she never fails to cheer me up! :D

Rachel May 5, 2011 at 9:27 pm

Since I am not currently a pet owner [Boo! :( ], I will tell you about the best brothers (Charlie, boston terrier, and River, shepherd mix) and nephews (JoeBilly, coonhound, and Pudge, uh….mixed breed) a girl could have. All four of my boys are absolutely nuts, and I’m nuts about them. They’re all rescues, too! Charlie is always happy to see you, and River has the sweetest disposition of anyone I know. JoeBilly has become such a good boy in his forever home after several disappointing returns to the shelter, and Pudge is an amazing escape artist (oh, the stories we could tell…)! Not having my own doggies at the moment makes me even more appreciative of the presence of these angels in my life.

Marie Gutshall May 6, 2011 at 3:01 am

I have two cutie pies – Abbie, whose birthday was yesterday, is a peek-a-poo. And Tobi, a dachshund who is my BAAAABBBYYYY :) I also have a application in to adopt a sweet golden retriever lab from a animal shelter. Love my babies- such snuggle bugs.

Marie Gutshall May 6, 2011 at 3:03 am

I liked and commented the facebook page, too!

Marie Gutshall May 6, 2011 at 3:04 am

Annnnnd I’m following them on twitter! Yay.

Brittany May 6, 2011 at 4:20 am

I didn’t grow up around dogs because everyone in my family (including me) is allergic to animals. I always thought they were dirty and gross and I couldn’t stand the hair they left in owner’s homes. Imagine my surprise when I fell in love with the litter of puppies that my mother-in-law had 2 years ago. The more I got around them the less my allergies bothered me and now I am pretty much cured. We took home 2 pups from the litter and they have been the center of our lives ever since. Everyone thinks their dogs are the cutest in the world, but mine are :-) Cole and Annie are lab/ german-shorthair pointer/ border collie mixes and they are the most loyal, lovable and fun-loving dogs ever. Nothing pleases them more than to run around in the mountains with us in the day and then at night curl up on the couch snuggled next to us. Seeing their wagging tails every time I come home makes me so happy, I can’t believe I lived without the joy of dogs in my life for so long!

melinda h. May 6, 2011 at 2:27 pm

Oh man…Cricket would go a little crazy with these! Shes my feisty chihuahua and I <3 her!

Joy May 6, 2011 at 7:20 pm

Dobby (my chocolate standard poodle) is far and away the love of my life! (I’d say don’t tell Jim but he already knows!) he can make me smile and laugh faster than anyone else – and today he wore a top hat all! Day! Long! Why you wonder? Easy I put it on him while I was cleaning and he left it on through his day (car trips and hikes included)

Mara @ What's For Dinner? May 6, 2011 at 8:05 pm

So we have as of wednesday, two dogs! One is Raven the most smiley Rottweiler ever and she’s trained to “get her butt” instead of chasing her non-existent tail. Maddux (the newer one) is a 3-year golden retriever we’re adopting from my friend whose son has developed an allergy. He has a wrinkly forehead like an old man :)

I have two dogs, Prince and Kelsey. Prince is a yellow lab mix, and Kelsey is 100% black lab. Prince would lose a race to a turtle; Kelsey runs like a cheetah – all day long. They’re opposites, but so cute together. We love them. :)

Hi, my dog’s name is Dakota. He’s a golden retriever and he has mischievous eyes! I love his little white spot on the top of his head and that he’s constantly playful.
