in meals

WOW! blown away by all the comments on my dos años post. you guys are sweet. and i just realized that my entry requirements may have sounded like i was fishing for compliments. HA! not the case, i mainly wanted to hear what else i could do to improve the blog, but it sounds like things are smooth sailing.. so i will just keep on keepin’ on.

i have a busy day/night and so i won’t be doing a typical post.. so i typed up something somewhat entertaining. or it could be totally boring.. you decide.

in honor of today being the two year mark from my very first post on meals & moves, i thought it would be fun to copy, paste and critique my first post.

original words are in regular font. my current remarks are in bold italics.

enjoy!

************************************************************************

so here i am, starting up a blog for accountability and documentation of everything i eat and all the exercise i do!  while this blog is mainly for me, i hope that others can find it useful and/or entertaining. i definitely do not document nearly everything i eat and very little of the exercise i do. this blog is by no means mainly for me, but for everyone.. for the friends i have made, for the family who reads, and.. yes.. still a bit for me. i still hope everyone has found it useful and/or entertaining.

since i just spent a little too much time on the little links at the top (hi, nice to meet you & body for life, it worked for me) i really do not have the energy to ramble at the moment!  but i hope this blog turns into something fabulous! is it something fabulous? my guess is yes. because it’s lasted this long. and anything that isn’t fabulous usually doesn’t make it two solid years.

i have been taking photos of my food today, and i plan to post my meals just once a day.. so i will save those photos until later tonight when all my meals for the day have been inhaled.  in the meantime, i wanted to throw something up here.. and what better place to start than water? i can’t believe i used to post ALL my meals & moves EVERY day. what was i thinking? how did i find the time? i still think water is a great topic of conversation, by the way.

i love libations of all kinds, but honestly if i had to pick one thing to drink for the rest of my days, water would be my first pick.  usually i opt for water over sodas and juices when i am eating out.  lucky for me i LOVE water, because i know some people have a hard time chugging it down.  i have a daily goal of one gallon of water.  yep, that is 128 ounces of delicious h2o. yes! water will always be my first pick. although, i wrote this post before the discovery of kombucha.. and i could easily drink that business for the rest of my days. i always opt for water over sodas and juices.. and yep, still have that daily gallon goal.

i got these fabulous contigo water bottles in my easter basket.  i cannot rave about these things enough.  they are completely spillproof, have a clip to attach them to anything and everything, and the best part they measure your fluid intake with handy marks at 8 oz, 16 oz and 24 oz (ass well as 500 ml and 250 ml for you metric folks).  they come in packs of three at costco.  but if they are not at your local costco, you can pick some up off the contigo website. i can’t believe i have only been using contigo water bottles for two years. it feels like a lifetime. i love them and they changed my life! okay, that’s drastic.. but really, they really are the best water bottles ever. i am even giving one away in my dos anos giveaway. make sure you check it out before saturday night at midnight.

contigo

wow, that same exact blue one was all over my post on tuesday! goes to show these babies hold up.

i down approximately 6 or 7 of these bad boys each day, which works out to be more than a gallon.  this is fine with me, because i also drink coffee every morning and i try to match each ounce of coffee consumed with an ounce of water.  on average, i guzzle about 140 ounces of water each day.  this makes up for my daily cup’o’joe. hmm.. i drink a lot more coffee these days. i should probably up my water consumption to match.. or just cut back on coffee..

why drink so much water?  people ask me this on a daily basis.  they look at me like i am ridiculous when they see me carrying around 3 water bottles and refilling them on an hourly basis. it’s true. they look at me like i’m positively bonkers. well, let me jot down a few reasons why i drink SO MUCH water: oh, can’t wait to read these. i hope they all still ring true!

  • bill phillips told me to.  honestly, before i knew anything about why i should be drinking a lot of water, this was my reason.  my body for life book said to drink a lot of water.. so i did it. that bill phillips. he taught me a lot about food and fitness.
  • i have a problem with my kidneys and bladder, and if i am not hydrated i get chronic urinary tract infections. something that i have dealt with since i was 4 years old.. and the doctors do not know why. i used to be on medication, but since i started drinking a gallon of water a day, i have not had any problems.  i think this is reason enough for me to stay hydrated.. the consequences are painfully brutal.  this is very true. i haven’t had a UTI in ages simply because i drink my water.
  • water is zeros across the board.  while i hate that bottled water has nutrition info (i think it is totally useless) i do love what that info says: zeeeero!  no calories, no carbs, no nothing.  why drink something else that is loaded with calories and/or sugar?  drinking my calories is not something i love to do.  if i am going to have sugar, i would much rather eat a bowl of ice cream rather than drink a can of pepsi.  and the truth is i could probably have four bowls of ice cream to equal that one can of pepsi.  i was pretty smart back then.
  • water keeps you full and keeps you from eating “just because”.  water suppresses the appetite naturally and helps metabolize stored fat.  usually when you think you are hungry, chances are you are probably thirsty.  drink a glass of water and then see if you are still hungry. i need to remember to do this more often—especially when i am eating out of boredom. which happens. more often than it should.
  • water is necessary for your body to digest and absorb vitamins and nutrients.  it detoxifies the liver and kidneys and carries away waste from the body.  when it comes to digestion, fiber along can’t aid properly in digestion on it’s own.  without water, good fiber goes bad, causing constipation and discomfort. ew.  ew is right, give me another glass of water.
  • if you are retaining water due to too much sodium, the best way to get RID of the water weight is to drink MORE water!  this tells your body it is not dehydrated and you do not need to hold on to all that water and it will flush your body out.  retained water shows up as excess weight on the scales. the scales? who needs the scales? two years ago janetha did, but current janetha most certainly does not.
  • water is essential in weight loss.  for the reasons i named above. to aid in digestion, to get rid of water retention, to suppress the appetite, to hydrate the muscles and to metabolize the fat. true story. that’s why i drink a lot of it. but not too much. there IS such a thing as too much water. i should have mentioned that two years ago. but i am now. so it counts.

so yeah, i love my water.  for more reasons than one.  i am going to go drink some now..you should too.   i will be posting today’s meals later! oh boy. glad i am not flashing back to that post. it was a sight to be seen—horrible photos! but i was eating protein oatmeal, greek yogurt, granola, eggs, hummus, veggies, toast with peanut butter, cottage cheese and lots of coffee.. so i guess not much has changed.

************************************************************************

hope you enjoyed my lil’ flashback to day one. i feel like i have come a long way since april 20, 2009. i wonder what will be going on in two more years, on april 20, 2013?! only time will tell.

Q~

do you eat the same foods that you were eating two years ago, or how have your habits changed? i eat the same things for the most part.. but i eat a lot more REAL food and waaaay less sugar free/artificial foods. although i can’t give up my SF ketchup and SF syrup.

Wow! what a great way to mark your two year anniversary!

So fun to look over old posts I’m sure and it’s so funny how much can change in a relatively short time! Thanks so much for sharing all that you have learned from your experiences! :)

jackie April 20, 2011 at 2:33 pm

that was fun! that bill phillips is pretty great huh? his new website is doing webtv shows every week now. he is giving away his nutrition shakes and an ipad each time. it is pretty inspiring to watch.

i never told you thanks for those bars you sent me. i was out of town when they came and it slipped my mind. so thanks! i haven’t had the chance to try one yet, but am excited!

Holly @ The Runny Egg April 20, 2011 at 2:52 pm

I loved this post Janetha! It is crazy how things change after a year or two. I definitely eat better than I used to — no more frozen meals for lunch every day or frozen pizzas for dinner every night!

movesnmunchies April 20, 2011 at 3:00 pm

this is such a cool post! comparing then to now! ‘oh MY! my habits have certainly changed… veganism being the main one! and no taking CARE of my body being the second!

The Sometimes Healthy Girl April 20, 2011 at 3:09 pm

um I love SF ketchup and syrup too! I was afraid to admit it but I feel better knowing you love it too ;-)

I don’t quite eat the same as I did two years ago. Like you, I eat a bit more real food now. BUT, I still think I have some weird habits that need to be broken. Hoping the blog will help me break the habit!

Carbzilla April 20, 2011 at 3:22 pm

Love it and loved your video! You wouldn’t think water bottles would be such a big deal but my super cutie Camelbak is leaving lately and SO annoying. The little tab broke on my other one so I have to pull up the spout awkwardly. Who breaks a tab on their water bottle? I’m a spaz!

laursorganiclife April 20, 2011 at 3:38 pm

Love it! I just started a blog recently and Im already laughing at things I wrote a day ago I can’t imagine even a year from now! My eating habits have definetely changed alot over the past few years. Finally learned how to not either be on a diet or off one…just be.

Pure2raw twins April 20, 2011 at 3:47 pm

Love seeing what your first post looked like! I hate going back to look at mine since I have changed in so many ways since I first started blogging. Which I think is a good thing …change :) I still eat some of the same eats but I think my view, tone, motivation etc in how I look at life, food, and my blog is different now!

Nicole @ Fresh & Fit April 20, 2011 at 3:50 pm

What a fun idea! I loved seeing your first blog! Funny how you built your blog on the foundations and essence of life…Water!

My eating habits have changed somewhat in the past two years. I now eat nutritional yeast and a lot more tofu and beans!

Annette @EnjoyYourHealthyLife April 20, 2011 at 3:51 pm

I eat pretty much the same–just less sugar and treats and wayyyy more real food. I LOVE fruit!! And spinach :) I also drink more smoothies-those babies are amazing!

runyogarepeat April 20, 2011 at 4:00 pm

This was so entertaining to read! I definitely eat way better than I did 2 years ago. Two years ago, I still thought nutrigrain bars were enough for breakfast, and low-calorie foods were the best foods. Now, I eat tons more real food, and especially more veggies & fruit.

Krystina (Organically Me) April 20, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Well 2 years ago I was double fisting Oreos and fried chicken, and now I’m vegan and 200lbs lighter, so I’d say I’m different!

lifttorun April 20, 2011 at 4:20 pm

I drink so much water too. As I type I am drinking water.

Two years ago I didn’t eat fruits or veggies. Literally. Now I can’t live without them. I am definitely healthier now than two years ago believe or not.

The Teenage Taste April 20, 2011 at 4:27 pm

I like the flashback post, Janetha! I also drink a ton of water – no where near a gallon but about 80-100 ounces a day. I love my water! ;]
As for my eating habits, two years ago I was juuuuust getting into eating healthier. At that time I thought that meant lots of Lean Cuisines and 100 calorie packs. Since then I’ve incorporated a lot more whole foods and things like greek yogurt, peanut flour, and chia seeds in my diet. Yay! :]

Jen@jensdaily April 20, 2011 at 4:45 pm

Fun! Happy 2 year anniversary!
Yikes. 2 years ago I was eating anything and everything I could get my hands on…probably a lot of fast food.

Sara April 20, 2011 at 5:08 pm

More like how have my habits NOT changed?! Hehe. 2 years ago I was getting ready to move back to CA, and I definitely wasn’t paying much attention to what I ate because I was gaining weight and feeling cruddy. I was super stressed by my job, and that definitely fed into the problem (no pun intended). 2 years can change a lot!

cleaneatingchelsey April 20, 2011 at 5:32 pm

:) This makes me laugh. Whenever I look back at my old posts, I wnt to go back and edit in comments too.

marissa1983 April 20, 2011 at 5:56 pm

idk if you have heard of the “happiness movement” but i have a feeling you’d <3 it. http://www.actionforhappiness.org/

Sarah April 20, 2011 at 6:03 pm

aww, i loved seeing your thoughts then & now! also, love that your first post was about water!!

Eden April 20, 2011 at 6:41 pm

I’ve read this post a few times! Not that Im an obsessive stalker or anything, but I generally read my favorite bloggers’ first post.

My, you’ve come a long way and deserve the sea of comments you got. And everything about you and your blog is fabulous.

Hmm I do think my habits have changed. Not drastically but I was really into a more vegetarian based diet two years ago. I for sure have gone “meat heavy” lately.

applesnoats April 20, 2011 at 6:42 pm

I will ALWAYS love ketchup no matter how much bad stuff it has in it!
i loved seeing the first post what a great idea!!!!!

katshealthcorner April 20, 2011 at 7:12 pm

Whoh girl!!! This is AWESOME! :D

emily April 20, 2011 at 7:58 pm

My eating habits haven’t really changed, though I eat more food in generally than I used too.

I’m late but – CONGRATS ON 2 BLOGGING YEARS!!! I’ve loved reading for almost that long :)

Katy (The Singing Runner) April 20, 2011 at 8:31 pm

Haha! This was a cute idea! It’s weird to see how things have changed and how thing’s haven’t.

I definitely do not eat the same things I ate two years ago. Two years ago, I wasn’t a vegetarian (I was one formerly but started eating meat again for a little then went back to not), I never ate brussels sprouts or spinach or tofu. Granted I didn’t eat CRAP all the time, but I didn’t eat as many vegetables and fruits.

Kalyn April 20, 2011 at 10:30 pm

Loved the flashback (: Since I have just started reading Meals & Moves within the last few months, it’s nice to get a chance to read about you back in the day.
My eating habits have changed drastically in the last two years. I’ve gone from surviving off of sugar-free and “diet” foods like Lean Cuisines that I thought were healthy to REAL food like the ones you mentioned above. I’ll never go back!

cathy/kiki April 21, 2011 at 2:56 am

super fun idea, j! i noticed that your “voice” really hasn’t changed that much in two years…some bloggers really evolve in terms of blogging style, but yours is pretty much the same…shows you truly write from your heart!
i eat a lot less frankenfood (ie protein bars and mixes) than i used to, and less cereal (note i did not say NO cereal!)…stayed the same with fresh veggies and fruit – love ’em.
have a great last day of work before the longgg weekend!

Di April 21, 2011 at 4:49 am

I love your critique! It’s funny to go back and see what you’ve written in the past. :) I also love your blog. Here’s to many more years of blogging!

I’m eating drastically different than 2 years ago, but I think that’s because of necessary dietary changes I’ve recently made. I’m eating a lot of the healthier whole foods that I’ve been seeing on blogs for the past two years now and watching my sodium intake (due to a family history of hypertension).

withasideofhope April 21, 2011 at 5:29 am

I have most definitely changed the way I am eating. I eat a lot more fruits and vegetables. I snack a lot less and eat less processed foods. If I drink soda, I only drink diet. I have really tried to eat much healthier than I did before.

Paige (Running Around Normal) April 21, 2011 at 6:13 am

ha! that was fun to read! Your first post was WAY better than mine :) So glad I read your blog :D

Christin@purplebirdblog April 21, 2011 at 7:57 am

I love it!! And I am forever grateful for you introducing me to those Contigo bottles… my water consumption has gone up drastically! :)

Susan April 21, 2011 at 8:06 am

Okay, so lately when I’ve been opening up your posts on Reader in my head I start singing that song “I came to move, move, move, move…” Can’t help it!

My eating habits have stayed pretty stable through most of my life, but a huge change for me came about a year ago when I cut out dairy. It’s really helped me feel loads better but I can’t help but miss cheese and yogurt sometimes!

Emily April 21, 2011 at 8:34 am

Yes, I would say fabulous indeed! I don’t know why, but I don’t usually feel like it’s right for me to enter your giveaways, however, I do want to tell you why I read your blog. #1–You are my friend!! #2 But the reason I started out reading your blog is because I was fascinated that someone from Utah had started a food blog. I had been reading Eat Like Me and Kath Eats for YEARS, and never believed someone else I could actually know would be as obsessed with yummy food and health as I was. I remember seeing you BFL photos and reading a couple of your posts, and thinking i NEED to be friends with this girl! I am kind of shy, but you were so super nice and friendly towards me–it was awesome! My food blog is pretty much history for a lot of reasons, and I don’t read as many foodie/exercise blogs as I used to. But I always check yours because I love you, I’m interested in your life and I wish we got to hang out more. Anyway, seriously long-ass comment but I’m done now. :) xoxo

Mari April 21, 2011 at 10:18 am

Two years ago, I was eating a lot of meat and now it has been 1 year since I had any =)

simplynutritiouskate April 21, 2011 at 10:36 am

Happy two year anniversary its amazing how things change over two years I know I have changed my eating habits completely over the past few years and have never felt better!

Caree @ Fit-Mama April 21, 2011 at 12:24 pm

happy two year anniversary!

my eating habits are soo different than they were 2 years ago. Not that I wasn’t generally healthy, I just looked at food a different way. Now, I makes choices on food based on how they make me feel…and I really don’t have to really worry about my calories etc, because veggies and fruits and lots and lots of water just make me feel better, plain and simple.

Allison @ Runs A Latte April 21, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Happy blog–Just kidding! Honestly, I never would even think to write that word. You actually planted the idea in my head. But seriously, congrats. You have so many people that adore this blog and you, it’s obviously fabulous and people are getting so much out of it, laughs included!

I’ve been eating healthy several years now, but I’ve moved away from artificial processed foods and started cooking a lot more real foods. I used to be afraid of the kitchen, but reading blogs has taught me a TON about cooking! It’s like having my own personal consultants, which is so sweet!

melissadishes April 21, 2011 at 1:07 pm

I pretty much eat the same way I have for the last 4 years. I’ve cleaned it up a bit though.

Since I discovered Chobani this past year, I have added flavored yogurt back into my eating. Still not wild about the amts of sugar though

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) April 21, 2011 at 2:37 pm

Yes, you are fabulous!! And you must have to pee like a bandita. :-)

Hearts.

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) April 21, 2011 at 2:39 pm

i always forget to answer the q; yes I think i do eat the same stuff as two years ago. except my protein muffin…i hadn’t yet discovered it yet.

kissmybroccoli April 24, 2011 at 8:43 pm

Loved this! What a great idea for celebrating your 2 years!

I most definitely do NOT eat the same things I ate 2 years ago…Lean Cuisines, low/no fat cheese, heck low/no fat everything! I slowly made a progression away from those foods, but I have to give the majority of the credit to my diet makeover to my introduction to the blogging community. I’ve learned so much and tried so many new things since my first discovery of food/healthy living blogs and I can honestly say that it has changed my life! I feel so much better now that I’m eating REAL food and not bogged down by the overly processed crap that I “thought” was healthy!
