hi, guys! happy monday to you. i know, strange for me to pop in twice over the course of only a few days.. but here i am. i also made it to the gym yesterday for the first time in three months, but that’s a story for another day. i guess my point is that MAYBE i am turning a new leaf? just maybe? perhaps? we will see.
yesterday, after said gym adventure, i went to trader joe’s to do some grocery shopping… all by myself. did you hear that? by myself! no husband, no kid, just me, myself, and i. it had been a long time since i was free to just wander every aisle and pick up new-to-me things and check out what items i may have otherwise missed. usually when we grocery shop, it’s a mad dash to get in and out and on with our lives. i missed the slow-paced strolling grocery trips of my past.
i thought i would do a post all about my trader joe’s purchases—some staple items, some every-once-in-awhile items, and even some brand-new-to-me things!
first off.. things i buy EVERY time i go to trader joe’s!
i alternate between the kinds of cooked chicken i buy, and yesterday i got these grilled strips. sometimes i get the roasted chicken breasts, and other times the “just chicken”. this says heat & serve, but it is also good cold.
i used it for my salad today! (and i really like ranch dressing, btw.)
i also used their goat cheese for my salad. i buy it every time i am there. i also love the shaved cheese blend—it’s better than straight up parmesan and it has great texture.
we are big, huge fans of snacking in our house. our favorite snack is crackers, cheese, and salami. or, i guess this package spells it salame. either way, this stuff is affordable and tasty and pairs well with sharp cheddar! as you can see, we already made a dent in the package right after getting home from the store.
call me lazy, but i love buying pre-peeled hard boiled eggs. plus, they are cooked perfectly every time. i love throwing them into a salad (see above) or just eating them straight up.
we are cookie monsters in our house, but i don’t always have the motivation to make the best chocolate chip cookies, ever. so these come in as a close second. and if you are vegan, you are in luck, because so are these.
this staple purchase is more for marshall than for me, he eats one of these oatmeals every morning. they come frozen and only take a few minutes in the microwave, you really can’t beat that convenience. they are just slightly sweet and really delicious!
now that fox is drinking cow’s milk, i always buy TJ’s organic vitamin D milk for him.
this is THE BEST jarred pasta sauce. THE BEST. TJ’s has soooo many to choose from.. you should choose this one. it’s so good.
here are some things i don’t buy every time, but they have been long-time favorites in our house.
this olive oil is super affordable, and comes with a convenient spout. we finally ran out of our last bottle, so i had to buy some yesterday.
this is just the second time purchasing these. if you are a fan of mcdonald’s hash browns, you will love these! they are best warmed up in a skillet, so they stay crispy. and it doesn’t take long to heat them up!
i love frozen lasagna, but they are usually such big trays of lasagna. since we are only 2 people (well, plus fox.. but, yeah).. we don’t need a 9×13 pan of lasagna! this one is perfectly portioned. four servings, which makes enough for leftovers!
i do love pumpkin things, i am such a sucker for them! this seasonal pumpkin butter is so good. it’s great in oatmeal, on toast, or in these AMAZING chewy pumpkin cookies from jess.
we have been on an ice cream kick lately (for some reason our desserts of choice go in phases.. it’s usually cookies but currently it’s ice cream.) i had to puck up some TJ’s cookies & cream ice cream. not much to elaborate on here.. it’s delicious!
and, finally, here are some new-to-me (and fox!) items that i snagged while browsing the aisles.
mini crackers! perfect for little hands. and great with salami and cheese. also perfect for little hands to feed to dogs named penny and randy…
mac & cheese ravioli! fox is a fan of ravioli night, so i thought these would be perfect to get him for lunches. i bet they would be fun for older kids, because they are in the shape of sting rays, and food shaped like things is always more fun, right?
snagged this salsa. and a blurry pic of it. i haven’t tried it, but i am hoping it tastes a lot like that restaurant-style salsa.. not too runny, not too chunky. we shall see. also, mild.. because i am a wuss when it comes to heat.
i bought these in an attempt to get fox to eat vegetables. word on the street is he refused to eat them. so that’s great.
frozen mac & cheese.. you know.. for those times you are extra lazy and just need some comfort food. again, haven’t tried yet.. but i bet it’s yummy.
i grabbed this trio for a night when we might have no time and no dinner ideas! frozen potstickers, frozen stir fry veggies, and a dipping sauce to go with it all. i have had the dipping sauce years ago, and i think i recall it being delicious. this should be a nice, quick, easy meal! i love TJ’s frozen section!
so, i had read about this pot pie ravioli online but had never seen it anywhere. i thought it was frozen. but then i was browsing the fresh ravioli and this caught my eye. i was so excited! it really does taste like chicken pot pie.. filled with caramelized onions, peas, carrots, and chicken. it doesn’t need any sauce. we had it last night for dinner and just used a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of cheese. super good. marshall suggested we try it in our chicken noodle soup, instead of noodles, and that is brilliant! it’s how we will eat it next, for sure.
i spotted these frozen lemon bars when i was looking for ice cream. i LOVE LOVE LOVE lemon bars! my favorite recipe is this one. but i very rarely go to the trouble of making them. i can’t wait to see how these ones measure up to my homemade ones!
and, finally, pumpkin biscotti! amanda and i had big plans to make homemade pumpkin spice lattes at work this morning (they were SO good! SO easy! SO cheap!) and i thought this would pair great with our lattes. i was right! this stuff is tasty. get it while you still can.
whew! that’s not even ALL of the stuff i got, just the items to note. i could talk about trader joe’s for hours on end. i love that place! i used to pack nonperishables home in my suitcase every time i’d visit a city with a trader joe’s. i was thrilled when one made its way to SLC. and now we have two. i just hope they put one up north, now.. a little closer to my house. although, i would probably be much poorer if they did that!
1. what are your favorite trader joe’s products?
2. how do you feel about grocery shopping? love, hate, indifferent?
