introducing: move more in may!

in goals

hey guys!

well, it’s here. the last day of adventurous april. tomorrow i will be posting my closing thoughts, all of the final participant submissions, and the random winner of the custom case of chobani.

but today i want to talk about the future. the very close future… close as in tomorrow. or today, depending on when you are reading this. i want to talk about may. i have a month of may challenge for me—and for you!!

you know i like my monthly challenges (and my alliteration!) so you had to see this coming. i am challenging myself AND all of you to move more during the whole month of may.  the reason i am giving myself this challenge is because i am very sedentary. i know, i know, this is coming from the girl who has a blog called meals & MOVES.  but truth be told, i am a slug. you wouldn’t know it from reading my blog—i mean, i do exercise 5 times a week on average. however, i also sit at a desk for 40+ hours a week. what’s worse? usually 4 hours go by from morning to afternoon before i even stand up. i know. that’s bad. you don’t need to tell me, i already know. I NEED TO MOVE MORE.

image

the move more in may challenge is designed to get me off my ass and onto my feet. this means in the morning, during the day, and after work. typically the only time i am really moving around is during my workout of the day.  if i am not at the gym, i am always sitting or laying.  want proof? i wake up (from laying position), drive to work (sitting in my car), sit at my desk for the majority of the 8 hours i am there, sit some more on my drive home, sit on the couch after my workout and dinner, and then lay back down in bed… only to repeat the process again the next day.

a lot of people work on their feet, run errands throughout the day, lift their kiddos up and down (have you SEEN tina’s arms? she told me that it is from lifting her cute kids!), take their dogs on walks, or all of the above. but me? none of the above. heck—i am so sluggish that i drop my dogs off at daycare instead of walking them during the week! by the time we (me and the dogs) get home for the day, we snuggle up on the couch together and are all very content with our sluggish selves. marshall is the only un-sluggish one of the bunch.. he works on his feet all day and does lots of heavy lifting. the heaviest thing i lift all day is my pen. or my fork.. during lunch.

i think i have rambled on enough about why i need to move more. now i just need to DO IT! and i need your support, so i want you to move more in may, too! each day, i would like you to comment on the move more in may challenge page telling me how you moved that day OUTSIDE OF YOUR OFFICIAL DAILY WORKOUT.  yes, that’s right, we aren’t counting our workouts for this challenge.  that’s the whole point—we are already moving during our workouts. this is for all the other moves of the day.  be creative. try something different.

here are some ideas:

  • take a walk in the morning or evening
  • do pushups during TV commercials
  • do squats and lunges in your kitchen while dinner cooks
  • skip down the hallway at work
  • walk around the block during your lunch break (totally just typed “walk around the blog”…)

here are the rules/directions:

  • you can submit ONE entry for each day in may (31 total entries possible.)
  • you will submit your entry on the official challenge page.
  • your entry needs to tell me how you moved more for that day.
  • you can log past days if you can’t get to a computer right away, but remember: one comment=one entry=one day.
  • be honest! we don’t like cheaters or liars.
  • random winners will be selected from comments with time stamps from the individual prize period

yes, i said winners! so, yes, of course there are prizes. there are always prizes!

Yay for movement!! I was floored when I got my Bodybugg (Later GoFit) two years ago by how little I moved during the day and how much difference it made on my overal caloric burn. My favorite feature on my Go Fit was the pedometer. I no longer use my Go Fit (my subscription ran out and I’m cheap) but I wear a pedometer regularly. Although lately I’ve been slacking which is why I’m doing my 10,000 steps challenge this month.

I love Move More May. I’m going to call it “M-cubed”. I just got a Nike Fuel band…and it makes me sick. Now I can actually see how sedentary I am all day. Like you, I work a desk job. I’m a graphic designer/web content manager, and even though my brain gets a killer workout every day, my body just sits. This is why I work out for like 2+ hours every evening. If I didn’t do that, I would be a slobby fat-ass. Before I even saw this post, I decided to add some steps to my day. I’m incorporating a brief walk every day, and every half hour, I am standing up and doing something. Sitting is sad. But wow. I never knew I sat for so long until I saw it on a graph (Nike Fuel band is awesome, but it’s eye opening). May is going to be great, I can’t wait to get moving!

Willow @ My Own Trail May 1, 2012 at 9:05 pm

I’m definitely joining in! I’m just like you. I work out approximately 5 days a week, but I rarely move otherwise…and I have two kids and a dog! I sit at a desk at work all day and spend a good portion of the evenings (after my kids go to bed) on the couch writing/doing research/blogging/whatever. This challenge is a great reason for me to get moving more! I can’t wait.

Kait @ yogabeautylife May 1, 2012 at 9:57 pm

Awesome! I definitely need this motivation during May…I’m temporarily with Mom for 6 weeks and totally out of my workout schedule/routine! Here’s to moving more! <3

May 1st- Took a working lunch so I could power walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes!

Christina May 2, 2012 at 10:49 am

Well when you talk about all the sitting that’s done throughout the day you really let a sister know she’s a lazy ass!! LOL I need to get my ass up now!

Today I’m walking to city hall to fill out our marriage license with the hub (we planned on taking the subway) and I’m going to the gym tonight.

My usual couch potato evening ass is going to test out some HIIT workouts during commercial breaks :)

My comment from yesterday disappeared. :/

Today, instead of working the normal desk job, I was running around in the warehouse! Hooray!

5/3: Today I parked at Starbucks and walked one mile to my yoga class instead of parking in their parking lot! :-D

Kattreena May 3, 2012 at 8:56 pm

5/3: I did this workout http://www.sweettoothsweetlife.com/2012/02/21/the-10-minute-no-excuses-workout/ in between student teaching and open house tonight! Your blog inspired me to fit this in even though I was limited on time! :) thanks!!

natasha May 4, 2012 at 3:21 pm

May 4th: It poured this afternoon soon so I walked my apt. stairs and hallways,,,,looked like a freak but I think I might start a trend (:

Jodie May 4, 2012 at 6:35 pm

Made my preschoolers try to catch me!

Kattreena May 5, 2012 at 3:08 pm

5/4: I TOTALLY meant to send this yesterday, but I forgot! Ugh! I figured I’d just combine it with today’s comment! Yesterday, I did some calf raises at school and instead of driving, I walked to my boyfriend’s house! Today, I headed to the gym for a weight lifting class, but I managed to squeeze in 10 minutes of speed intervals on the stair climber before the class! :)

natasha May 5, 2012 at 3:18 pm

May 5th: Toe raises while standing in long line at store….uggghhhh!

Kirsten (Kirsten Captures) May 5, 2012 at 9:40 pm

May 5th: Walked my dog for 20 minutes. Walked up and down the stairs at the movie theatre. In 90 degree heat!

Kattreena May 6, 2012 at 8:26 pm

5/6: had to miss my yoga class this morning because I was getting my hair done, but that didn’t stop me! I combined moves from different yoga workouts and did this custom workout after I got home! :) I also threw in a BodyRock workout after dinner!

Ellie May 7, 2012 at 6:34 pm

Today I parked in the far lot, not too much extra, but better than nothing!

Ellie May 8, 2012 at 8:44 pm

Today I parked in the far lot again, and made sure to get up every hour at work to do a lap around the corrider.

Ellie May 9, 2012 at 9:01 pm

Alright, today I parked in the far lot, ran into work because it was raining and took the stairs at every chance. I also did achilles strengthening activities while sitting!

Christina May 10, 2012 at 12:27 pm

I had to take my dog Sushi to doggy day care this morning, normally we’d drive but we returned our lease 2 weeks ago, so the bus was the next option BUT in honor of #MoreinMay I walked!! I walked the dog to and from doggy daycare and then took the train to work (no way I was walking over the bridge). Got to work super hot and kinda sweaty but it’s all good!

To add to that I’ll be going to the gym and picking her up by walking again!

Kirstin May 10, 2012 at 11:59 pm

Omg. Moving. Literally moving (and working my ASS off) in may…

Jessica May 15, 2012 at 6:50 pm

May 15th- Took the stairs over the elevator today!
