ten things to splurge on.

my dad is one of those types that always buys the very best brand of whatever it is he may be purchasing at any given moment. he is a smart guy. he does his research. he goes for quality, and will not settle for less.

my mom loves a bargain. if she can get away with buying something for a fraction of the price rather than splurging on the razzle dazzle version, she’s all about it.

up until about a year ago, i was 100% like my mom. when we renovated our house, before moving in, i had to buy three sinks: two bathroom sinks and one kitchen sink.

at the time, i was all about a bargain. and boy, kitchen sinks were EXPENSIVE. i ended up picking a modestly priced one—i believe it was around $400.. which still made me cringe.. but it didn’t matter. it took my kitchen sink from this:

image

to this:

image

ah.. so nice and big and shiny and new! (and fiberglass, by the way.)

fast forward a year and a half.. and my kitchen sink now looks like this:

IMG 2067

stained, beaten, bruised.. sigh.

ugh. yeah. that’s what i get for bargain shopping a kitchen sink. they say hindsight is 20/20, and they are right. whoever they are… i sure wish i had purchased a high-quality porcelain sink, no matter the price tag. and since my brother laid our concrete countertops over the lip of the sink, it’s kind of hard to just get a new one (unless i want a rimmed lip sink, which i don’t, i love wiping crumbs right into the sink from the counter.)

one other example of my bargain shopping habits being a total downfall during the renovations is our main bathroom vanity. again, my brother did the countertops for us, so we had to pick out a vanity that he could install the countertop on.

thrifty janetha went with an IKEA vanity. sure, it’s cute.

IMG 2043

but it is NOT practical. at all. first of all, it was a huge pain to assemble.

image

but at least once it was done it was done. second, it sucks. there are no drawers. we leave everything on the counter, as you can see in the photo above. the cupboards are janky. it bugs me. and because our nice tile countertops are built right on top of the wonky vanity, it’s here to stay.. and hard to replace.

on the upside.. it does look a lot better than what we started with:

image

on the other upside, we couldn’t find a vanity to fit our master bathroom, so we opted to have one custom built by a family friend. BEST IDEA EVER. i adore my master bathroom vanity. the quality is top notch, it’s totally functional, and it is gorgeous. (photos are from the renovation process.)

it went from this:

IMG_9561

to this:

image

i so wish i had this same craftmanship in the place of the crappy IKEA vanity.

sigh. lesson learned.

anyway, all this rambling DOES have a point.

i recently read an article about ten items you should buy now that you will keep forever.

  1. dining table
  2. your favorite chair
  3. original artwork
  4. a durable knife
  5. unbreakable dinnerware
  6. indestructible blender
  7. well-made rug
  8. heavy dutch oven
  9. timeless headboard
  10. classic lamp

looking over this list, i am happy to report that i HAVE invested in a few of these.

dining table.

IMG 2054

this is one thing we splurged on when moving in. we got it at RC willey and i LOVE it. it expands to fit 8 people or it fits 6 people as-is. i love that there is a bench and chairs.. i am a big fan of benches for some reason.

original artwork.

we are slowly but surely collecting artwork. we try to buy pieces when we travel. we do have a few things that aren’t framed yet (framing is expensive!) but here are two items i love that are both hanging in our living room.

we got this one while honeymooning in mexico.

IMG 2061

i bought this as a christmas gift for marshall. it’s by kat’s creepy art.. she takes old paintings and adds in her own special flare. in this one: sharktopus. a hybrid shark octopus, coming out of the water to destroy the boat. i love it.

IMG 2058

a durable knife (knives).

IMG 2048

marshall actually bought me this stellar set of wusthof knives back when we were dating. i didn’t want to ruin them, so i stored them in a box under my bed until we were married and had our own home. i use the knives daily and really believe it makes my culinary experience much better. knives are important!

indestructible blender.

as you may know, we recently replaced our broken vitamix with a shiny new one.. which is way better than the old one. it has a variable speed dial and it came with a dry grains/bread kneading container. i am happy with our purchase, even though it was QUITE the purchase, and because it has a 7 year warranty.. we are set for quite awhile.

IMG 2051

p.s. if you want free shipping on a vitamix, click click.

i also have a few items on the list that are definitely not—uh—things that’ll last forever.

your favorite chair.

i have had this awesome mission-style chair since i moved out of my parents’ house. they handed it down to me and it has been through a lot. while i adore this chair, i think penny and randy adore it even more. they have officially taken over this chair.

IMG 2038

it’s a good thing it is leather, because every day we come home to see it covered in muddy paw prints.. as you can see in the photo above. i just got home from work and this is what they’ve managed to do today. i know this is probably making you neat-freaks cringe.. but i have had to get used to the muddy prints.. it’s a daily occurence! i think we will hold off on buying a nice, new chair.. our dogs would just trash it, anyway.

well-made rug.

image

this is another thing i bargain-shopped for when we were doing the renovations. we bought the above rug from a website for super cheap. this purchase, however, isn’t one i regret. i knew our rug would take a beating with the dogs.. and plus, we have spilled everything from coffee to ketchup on the rug. we’ve flipped it over once, so next time it gets a bad stain.. we will probably have to replace it. but since it was only $350, that’s not a big deal. so while it may not be well-made, it’s cute and does the trick.

timeless headboard.

image

here we go again.. another IKEA purchase. this one, however, isn’t a janky item. i like this headboard because it has roll-out compartments on either side, which is optimal for space saving. it’s actually quite efficient. i already had this bed when we got married, so we just bought the matching headboard and now marshall & i both have our own little cubbyholes. it’s great. i don’t know about “timeless”—but i like it!

and, finally, there are a few items on the list that i don’t have at all.

unbreakable dinnerware.

we have dishes that we registered for for our wedding. they’re typical and white and square and boring.

looking back, we shouldn’t have registered for these dishes. marshall really wants to phase out all of our “made in china” dishes and buy american-made pieces. it doesn’t really matter to us if they are unbreakable or not..

i really would just like to own a bunch of different dishes—one of each. so when the table is set, there are tons of random, mismatched pieces. i like that idea.

heavy dutch oven.

THIS IS ON MY LIST. i want one of these so bad. this one, particularly.. in case you were wondering.

or if you want to buy it for me :)

classic lamp.

when i think of classic lamps, i think of my dad. my parents have the most beautiful lamps throughout their house. my dad has a great eye for design, and really great taste. he’s into stickley lamps.

for some reason, he always knows the perfect spot for a nice lamp. i imagine that when the time comes for purchasing a classic lamp.. i will look to him for advice. and then i will ask my mom if she can find it anywhere for cheaper!

all in all.. i really shouldn’t complain too much. my house is a lot nicer than it was when we bought it, we were fortunate enough to get that fat tax credit to fix it up. plus, we are still young. we have time to buy things that we will keep forever. at least i don’t have a toilet in my kitchen anymore, right?

image

so, how about you?

do you typically splurge on high quality or save with a bargain?

how many of these 10 items do you own.. and will they last forever?

This reminds me that we need to invest in better knives at our house! I swear anytime I try and slice a spaghetti squash in half, the knife almost cracks in half.

When it comes to clothes and short-term things, I’m allllll about the bargains. When it comes to durable things like computers, Garmin, nice shoes, etc., splurging is a better option in the long-run.

Eden February 24, 2012 at 5:02 pm

Culinary school supported my belief that knives are totally worth the splurge. HOWEVER….the super duper expensive ones are generally kinda ok. You can get a decent set for a semi pricy price.

I skimp on most things because I’m Jew, I’m broke, and thats how I roll, but I actually splurge on two things:
toilet paper (because I like my butt to be soft)
and
mattress (because I want to sleep soundly)

Love you.

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey February 24, 2012 at 5:05 pm

ALWAYS splurge! We were told by our grandparents to “buy high quality things now because once you have kids there will never be money!” AMEN. We had some empty spaces for a while in our house until we got everything we wanted, but I’m so glad because I love all of our pieces!

Christine @ Oatmeal Bowl February 24, 2012 at 5:05 pm

Dutch oven and knives are a must. Of course, I am still waiting for my Le Crueset Dutch Oven in Flaming Orange. ;)

Carbzilla February 24, 2012 at 5:23 pm

I do find that we’ve pretty much grown out of IKEA, except for some cool little things. Our headboard/platform bed is Pottery Barn, and our other furniture (wrecked by pets) is Thomasville and La-Z-Boy. I think we have your kitchen sink but maybe ours is porcelain. I don’t know how to tell. It cleans up pretty well, and I’m glad it’s so big.

I love those Dutch ovens but they’re SO heavy when they’re full. I can barely lift them.

Love Marshall’s painting soooo much. I remember when you first posted about it. It seriously rocks.
*hugs*

Lindsay February 24, 2012 at 5:24 pm

My parents have ALWAYS taught me to invest in things for your home. My parents have never just gone out and bought furniture, they have to think about it as it is usually a large purchase. For example, my parents recently redid the entire main floor of our house after living her 20+ years. We did EVERYthing the fireplace surround in new woodwork, the entire kitchen, dining room, and bathrooms! It was a crazy time, but a great learning experience! :)

MCM Mama February 24, 2012 at 5:24 pm

I have three Le Crueset pots/dutch ovens in different sizes. Best.purchase.ever. I do want a good dining room table eventually, but our dining room is also the “homework” room. Having an old Ikea table means I don’t freak when the kids accidentally glue something to it.

I don’t agree with the rugs, but I have kids and they destroy things. Might as well have them destroy a rug from target instead of something worth having. (And I haven’t used a blender in the entire 17 years I’ve been married. I’m sure there have been times it would have been convenient to have, but I can’t say that I’ve ever had a “damn, I wish I had a blender moment”. LOL)

Ashley B February 24, 2012 at 5:26 pm

Those are the best knives! As for everything else, losing my job right after rehabbing the house didn’t leave much room to purchase lifetime pieces. Maybe one day.

Katie @ Talk Less, Say More February 24, 2012 at 5:32 pm

I’m cheap. That $350 rug sounds expensive to me…haha! But until I have my “own” place that I feel like I’ll stick in for awhile (versus the moving at least once per year…), I won’t really invest my money in nice things because I know it’ll get beat up with the next move. ;)

Betty February 24, 2012 at 5:33 pm

You know I recently splurged on a vitamix and almost had a heart attack! I’m def verrrrry cheap. I do like nice things, but I’d I can’t get away with a bargain in down. Barbara is the complete oppo .. I do think when it comes to most of those things it’s a good idea to get the best and not worry about it. I do, however agree with chair and furniture because of the pet thing.. It’s not worth it..

emily (a nutritionist eats) February 24, 2012 at 5:33 pm

I have knives…and a heart-shaped le crueset dutch oven. (A little small, but amazing)! I better get going on the list! :)

Maren February 24, 2012 at 5:48 pm

My sis got me a wusthof butcher’s knife for Christmas last year and I LOVE it. It’s sooo nice! I definitely want a set someday!

JenG February 24, 2012 at 5:49 pm

look into Fiesta dishes. They are made in Ohio and are amazing. We registered for the as wedding gifts. They have a ton of colors and I think they are timeless. I love our mix and match dishes! you can get them from Khols and macy’s on sale.

Emily @ Relishments February 25, 2012 at 8:13 am

I second the Fiesta! We currently have service for 12 (in white, shamrock and plum, if you’re interested) and after 3 years of using only Fiesta dishes for all our eating/serving, I haven’t broken/chipped a single piece. I just liked the look of them when I registered, but I had no idea they’re virtually indestructible. JenG is right, there are often really good sales and JCPenney has them as well as a lot of thift stores, if you want to do mix and match.

Ellen Clifford February 24, 2012 at 5:51 pm

I am sort of a weirdo in that I like as little furniture as possible. That being said I think a good mattress and pillows are totally worth the splurge because sleeping well affects pretty much everything.
I splurged on getting some drawings I’d done framed, sort of like buying art-frames can be pricy when your drawing is eight feet tall!
Lastly I’d like to buy a vitamix…someday, someday:)

Sarah w February 24, 2012 at 6:19 pm

So I think your sink is fine but the big problem is that it’s PORCELIN and gets dirty and grubby and scratches. My parents got one too and hated it bc u had to be soooo careful not to scratch!

As for made in USA dishes – FIESTAWARE all the way. Colorful, timeless, unbreakable and made in America. Also cheap!!! Always on sale at Macy’s an other online outlets.

Stacey February 24, 2012 at 8:25 pm

I agree about the porcelain sink except you can clean them to look new. I bought Bar Keepers Friend from Target and it cleans the porcelain perfectly. Buffs out the scratches, stains and makes it bright white again. It also cleans your sink hardware. It’s a harsh cleaner which sucks, but it is worth a good deep clean once a month or so I think. It also does fiberglass and takes out rust.

I too second the Fiesta… We have them in about 8 different colors. Love them! So timeless… and you can find old pieces at antique stores!

KaraHadley February 24, 2012 at 6:20 pm

I have 1 wusthok knife and it’s the greatest thing ever. I want a complete set (and to win the lottery). Since I don’t actually have a house (woohoo dorms!) I don’t have any housewares. BUT I do have my step great grandfather’s old lime green vinyl recliner. For something from the 70s that was thoroughly saturated with cigarette smoke when I got it, that baby has held up. And once I do have a home it will most definitely be a fixture of the living room.
Also, I don’t get the whole rug thing. Do they really wear out that quickly?

Jen at luckandfunny February 24, 2012 at 6:22 pm

When I travel I buy a single place setting of some fabulous, local tableware. When I set the table, not only do I have an interesting, fun mix, but I get to remember all of the great trips!

Sarah w February 24, 2012 at 6:23 pm

Oh and ditto le creuset! Received a Dutch oven for wedding and it’s amazing and will last forever.

I also think all clad pots are the way to go. We got cuisinart multiclad pro and they are just not the same and one of my pots is semi falling apart. All clad is sturdy and will last

I really want a vitamix but that will have to wait

Lindsay @ Lindsay's List February 24, 2012 at 6:41 pm

Our dads should meet! My dad is the same way – it took him 7 years to build our house because he wanted to do everything himself and price-checked EVERYTHING!! But now, my parents have a dream house! Worth it!
(I invest in hiking/outdoor gear. I’ll pay whatever it costs if it will LAST!)

Sarah @ The Healthy Diva February 24, 2012 at 7:03 pm

It really depends. If i think i’m going to use an item really often i splurge and go for quality, but if i don’t care about replacing it i might go for the cheaper option. I splurged on my blender and use it every day. I don’t have my own house yet, but I did buy a proper dining table that I make myself eat at every night. It was something my mom instilled in me…always eat dinner at the table, even if it’s by yourself…make it a romantic experience! i’ll slowly invest in the others over time…i’m still on the prowl for my favourite chair

BroccoliHut February 24, 2012 at 7:12 pm

Note to self: add these items to wedding registry.

Mary Legare Whaley February 24, 2012 at 7:41 pm

Girl…I am all about buying quality products. I have a favorite sofa that I splurged on, not a chair. I do my own original artwork (check out my Facebook page (Mary Legare Whaley | Fine Art). Isn’t unbreakable dinner wear crappy plastic? I refuse to own that. I have a mahogony 4-poster bed, several well-made rugs, and a few lamps that I’ll hold onto for a long time, if not forever. Do invest in a dutch oven. I have a 5 piece Le Creuset set that I’ll have forever. My parents still use their set from when they first got married (like 30 years ago). Just pick a color that you love that will mix well with others if you decide to add a new color to the mix. These will last forever. I use at least one of my 5-piece set every day. Best Christmas present EVER.

Danielle @ D. Sells Seashells February 24, 2012 at 7:55 pm

I’ve always been a bargain shopper, BUT since meeting my boyfriend I’ve started to splurge on quality items where it counts. He’s Italian and apparently it’s in the blood.

Baking Serendipity February 24, 2012 at 9:14 pm

I kind of think I go middle of the road when it comes to being thrifty and splurging. I’ve had one too many long afternoons of arguing over how to assemble Ikea furniture, but still haven’t outgrown its price tag. Dang it.

Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli February 24, 2012 at 10:07 pm

I like to think of myself as a pretty good bargain hunter, but when the time comes to buy something I deem as “important” I tend to lean more toward the name brand stuff. And to tell you the truth, I’ve never regretted such a purchase. It didn’t take me long to decide on my Garmin and I absolutely love it! I’ve been debating FOREVER on the Vitamix…and I know that one day I will just break down and shell out the $500 for one, but for now, I’m stalling and I have no idea why! Haha!

I am a HUGE advocate for a good knife set. I got my first really good knife when I went to Gatlinburg for the first time and I swear, it was the best $40 I ever spent! I actually went back about a year later and bought one just for my mom to teach her the difference (and I was also tired of nearly chopping off my fingers every time I cooked at my parent’s house). And you know what? She loves it! Mission accomplished! :)

Marisa February 24, 2012 at 10:37 pm

Oh my gosh your kitchen is so much better now! And maybe I am wrong, but didn’t you get a similar Dutch oven for your wedding?

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) February 24, 2012 at 11:01 pm

Holy freaken crap dude I have no idea what this post said but look at your mom’s ripped arms!!!

Kidding. I know what it said. I am a total mixture of splurge & save. All of our remodels have been ikea Ikea Ikea with a little target thrown in for good measure. And it’s all held up beautifully. I’ve gone higher end on jeans and handbags but then I use them for 5+ yrs. I go drugstore on makeup but get Japanese hair straightening. I shop at thrift stores for the evening gowns I wear on cruises that Derek hunts deals for. I would never pay for parking unless I’m late or it’s a dangerous area. I lasered my legs so I’ll never have to buy another razor as long as I live. Original artwork, yes for sure, right next to the ikea plastic lamp. Crazy right? It seems to work for us.

Carly February 24, 2012 at 11:08 pm

I got that dutch oven for a wedding gift and it is THE best! I also agree that good knives are a must. My husband is a chef and has gotten me completely hooked on Global knives. They are light, easy to use, and super sharp. LOVE them!!!!!

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga February 25, 2012 at 12:08 am

I have the Vitamix, good knives, I have that Le Creueset in blue!! My mom found it for me and gave it to me for Xmas about 5 years ago. She got it at Marshall’s for like 49.99 Keep checking Marshall’s or TJ Maxx….they always get tons of Le.C. and you may get lucky!

Rugs, lamp, dining room table…they aren’t “forever” items, but they are 10-20+ year items and I have plenty of those, too.

I do need a really classy headboard though!

Jennyb February 25, 2012 at 12:24 am

Creuset cast iron pots are amazing, the ones in our house are older than me possibly a wedding present like the Kenwood chef that we still have too and my mum first got married when she was 2, so thats 34 years! The Creusets are going strong but the kenwood blender attachment has needed some attention especially at i am using it almost daily. But with a bit of strong adhesive & a little work sharpening the blades by my step dad it’s good enough for smoothies & banana/fruit soft serve :) Sadly they don’t seem to make the glass blender jugs anymore which is why we want to keep this going as long as we can. if fact in general the Kenwood chef machines are a lot more flimsy. i think its doing great for 34 years!

melissanibbles February 25, 2012 at 4:14 am

If I could afford to splurge, I would. The only thing I think everyone really should splurge on is a good vacuum cleaner. I live in a studio, but I still have a heavy duty Dyson. Mites, ants, little spiders and all kinds of bacteria are in and under your carpet, in your drapes, I could go on. A good vacuum is worth the splurge for getting those things out of your home!

Susan February 25, 2012 at 6:46 am

Totally agree!! I’ve owned three different vacuum cleaners in the past few years because the cheap ones always break down. Expensive ones that get the job done are worth the money.

Courtney February 25, 2012 at 5:37 am

We just got a Le Creuset dutch oven after Christmas and when you finally do splurge for one (so worth it!), I highly recommend the 7qt size over the 5 1/2. My husband does all the cooking and he can just fit a whole chicken in the 7qt size with roasting veggies underneath (about a 3.5-4lb chicken) and if we’d gone with the smaller one, we’d be SOL for a lot of the things he uses it for.

Lauren @ What Lauren Likes February 25, 2012 at 5:47 am

i’m a little bit of both! I would like to get a good set of knives!

Nicole @ Making Good Choices February 25, 2012 at 5:57 am

I’m SO happy you wrote about your IKEA vanity! i was just online shopping there for one and now I certainly won’t be. We’ve splurged on a bunch of things in our house when we got married, like our dining room table and bedroom furniture. now i need to splurge on a blender! great post!

sofia February 25, 2012 at 6:04 am

ah this post totally resonates with me (and BT) right now since we’re buying a ton of stuff for our new apartment, and really trying to research everything (down to freaking corkscrews) to make sure we buy the best. or, i should say, BT does the research and i’m more of the impulsive buyer with little patience ;) but anyway, yeah, i am all about quality. i’d rather spend the money and be happier with a better quality product (be it a can opener or a couch) that will probably last longer too. we actually made a no ikea rule because we both hate the place so much… more so the place, but also the products. talk about an anxiety attack waiting to happen! shopping there is a nightmare. okay. this comment is getting rambly. anyway, neat post miss janetha :)

Ash Bear February 25, 2012 at 6:11 am

We have that exact Le Crueset dutch oven and I love it! If you ever get a Pottery Barn or Williams-Sonoma gift card, use it towards that!!

Susan February 25, 2012 at 6:44 am

This post was of particular interest to me! Now that I’m finally not sick and making a decent paycheck, I’m looking to move out of my parent’s place into a nice place of my own. No stinky roommates. Instead of taking a bunch of hand-me-downs like I did the first time I moved out, I really want to take the time to buy nice items for myself that I’ll have for a while, and know that they won’t get ruined by roommates. I actually toyed with the idea of buying a house, but to be safe I need to do more saving first.

Anyways, all that rambling aside, I don’t think it makes sense for a person with dogs to buy a nice rug. Especially a person who plans on owning a puppy at any point. Throw rugs are piss magnets. They should definitely get thrown out every few years.

Oh, and original artwork is the best! Definitely worth the splurge in my opinion!

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) February 25, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Did you see what Lara’s dog did to her rug on IG?!! GAH!! (Then again, there would have been little reason for me to buy clothes when Ellie went through her wardrobe-eating phase lol)

Holly February 25, 2012 at 7:03 am

Craig & I have the same IKEA bedroom set for our master bedroom too. I love it! Love the rolling side compartments, and I love how the bed sits low. But it was a pain in the BUTT to put together. Talk about an all day project!!
I am envious of your sink, not because there are scratches( I don’t notice any in the picture) but b/c it doesn’t have a ‘lip.’ I can TOTALLY see why you wouldn’t want a lip anymore- so nice to just wipe everything right into the sink.

Joy February 25, 2012 at 7:08 am

We don’t have a dining room in the wee house therefore no dining table dining table. Our kitchen table is good for now but I hope to get an amazing one someday.

your favorite chair – I actually have 2 1) is a pier 1 papasan totally not timeless but I’ve loved it for a few years and still do and an antique chaise that I bought when we moved – timeless and amazing!

original artwork – I was an art dealer I have A LOT of original art some by unknown artists and some by people well known

a durable knife – does Rachel ray count? I say do since I cut the top of my finger off on valentines day with it

unbreakable dinnerware – we have cheapo dinner ware

indestructible blender – I’m debating between breaking down and spending the $ on a vitamix OR getting the ninja kitchen pro (pretty sure my target special is going to burst into flames with too many more green monsters)

well-made rug – yes 2 thank you west elm and some oriental rug place

heavy dutch oven – yup gift from a friend I have the one you want but in red

timeless headboard – yes bought it at west elm on clearance (without even asking Jim because there was only 1)

classic lamp – yes a Tiffany lamp Jim bought me a couple years ago for our anniversary

And that’s the long list because the poodle is sitting on my chest asleep and I’m bored

Kady February 25, 2012 at 7:20 am

I loooove the idea of mis-matched dishes. I did this when I first moved out on my own… I bought any cool 70s design stoneware dish (plate, bowl, mug) that I fell in love with during random thrift-store browsing (for $1-2 each). Since then, I also buy random cool peices from Ross and Marshalls bargain stores, but years later, it is the thrift store stoneware that is holding up with no chips. Plus I like that stoneware can go in the oven, if I am doing an openface sandwich or need to keep a plate warm, I can put it right into the oven or under the broiler without using a separate pan! Definitely check your local thrift stores! I also got an awesome huge woven indie-design fabric framed for $7 as another thrift-store find- it’s been in my dining room ever since, and always get compliments on it. Also thrift stores seem to always have owl theme pieces as products from the 70s :)

Janetha February 29, 2012 at 12:35 pm

It’s so funny you say that! For Marshall’s wedding gift, I got him a set of stoneware from a thrift store. It has roosters on it because he loves roosters. It goes in the oven, it’s SO sturdy, and it’s got a lot of character! I love it!

Life's a Bowl February 25, 2012 at 7:23 am

I am all about shopping sales but there are some things that I’d prefer to fork over a pretty penny for knowing that quality will eventually pay off… When I moved in with my fiance in the fall we purchased almost all new furniture and I am so happy we did :) We got a few pieces from Ikea like the nightstands and lamps and they’re OK but nothing great. Most of the furniture came from a furniture company and the quality is great- we fall asleep on the sofa every night [wanted to sleep on it rather than in our bed the first week we got it] and our bed, dresser, etc. are all beautiful wood. I’m happy knowing we’ll have this stuff for years and the money we spent will pay off :D

Laura (LunaChickRuns) February 25, 2012 at 7:30 am

I am SUCH a bargain shopper! We are in the process of renovating right now and it’s so hard for me to remember that some things (like a kitchen sink!) are worth the splurge because they will last.
We don’t own a bedroom set at all and I really want to have my father in law build one for us. I love that vanity in your master bath!

Knifes, pans, and kitchen appliances you use everyday. We are staying in a furnished corporate apartment and the knives are terrible. I went out and got one nice knife and one nice pan and it has made all the difference to my experience in the kitchen. I have two dutch ovens and I LOVE them. The heat is so even and they go from stove to oven to table. WORTH IT!

I am such a bargain shopper. Which has its positives and negatives. I love searching out a good deal, but sometimes I need to remind myself that it’s okay to splurge on some quality items.

Janetha–I have that LeCreuset dutch oven…and I got it dirt cheap at a Le Creuset outlet. Check out where the nearest outlet is to you or when you may be near one…they always have sales and percents off each month. I think I paid around $150 for mine….less I think. The outlets and factory stores have their own website…check it out.

Thank you I will check it out!

My husband is defintely the type to do a lot of research on something and spend more money to get the better quality item. In fact, when he bought me my Vitamix, he had to have “the best one” even though I was fine with the cheapest one. I have started to learn from him, after replacing so many “cheap” items over the years. He is REALLY cheap though when it comes to interior decorating details- linens in particular, which is why ours needs so much help. I can’t get him to see why it pays to just get a really nice set of curtains and how much they will change the way a room looks.
Oh- and about the sink- my kitchen sink is a double sink and drives me nuts!! And it’s white, and always stained!

I do own a few things on this list: nice knives (Global), a red Creuset dutch oven (passed down to my husband and I when my father-in-law moved to Switzerland), a nice dining room table (which my dog chewed on a few of the legs), well-made rug (Pottery Barn purchase after our house flooded), and original art (do canvases of my husband’s photography count?).
Your vanity is beautiful by the way!

Only time will tell if they last forever, but I do have the Vitamix blender, a Le Creuset Dutch oven, some very sturdy dinnerware, and a couple of cool pieces of original art.

Agree with the others who said to look into Fiestaware. Love that stuff; it’s beautiful, sturdy, and classic.

I try to strike a balance between being penny wise and pound foolish. In other words, I aim to get the best of whatever I can afford at that time for the best possible price. Shopping like a broke person is something I refuse to do, because it’s a bummer state of mind. So hey, even if I’m at the dollar store, I’m looking for the highest quality stuff in the joint. Ha!

I got a Dutch oven for a gift and thought, “what am i going to do with this?” Um….it is my favorite thing that I have ever owned and I use it multiple times a week! I can’t imagine living without it!

Also…thanks for the tips. We are actually in the market for a new kitchen sink and bathroom vanity. I’ll definitely be looking for quality over price!
