what a woman wants.

in meals

hey people! it’s 9:41 PM on a friday night and i am curled up on the couch in sweats, my husband’s hoodie and 3 blankets. i know, i like to party. you don’t need to remind me of how awesome i am.. i am well aware.

i actually just got home from a fabulous girls night out with momma b and sister suni. it was super fun and you better believe i am about to tell you all the details.

my mom & suni snagged me around 5 and we headed out to blue lemon for dinner. i had been there once before for lunch a few weeks back.

IMG_0773IMG_0770

it is such a cute little place right downtown on south temple between main and west temple. i love how modern and bright it is.

IMG_0771

we shared the hummus platter—thick, chunky and flavorful with soft, doughy pita wedges.

IMG_0781

suni got the grilled balsamic chicken panini and a side salad with bleu cheese, pears and toasted pecans.IMG_0774IMG_0782

momma b got the iron seared salmon which came on a bed of zucchini and squash alongside roasted baby potatoes.IMG_0777

i went with the seafood fish tacos which came with shrimp, salmon and mahi mahi along with pico de gallo and a spicy aioli.

IMG_0779

we were all VERY impressed with the food! i had a little bit of everything and loved every last taste. blue lemon has my seal of approval.

after dinner, we headed out to the south towne expo center to check out the what a woman wants show. i had been wanting to go to this and was glad i roped my mom and suni into going with me because we all know marshall wouldn’t be caught dead there!

IMG_0825

there were all sorts of vendors there!

facials..

IMG_0796

cookbooks..

IMG_0794

plastic surgeons..

IMG_0817

even psychic readings!

IMG_0804

the was an overabundance of tacky jewelry and junky purses.. that is my one rant!

IMG_0818

hi guys!

IMG_0819

we sampled some tasty treats from P.S.  confections.

IMG_0800

i fell in love with this owl necklace and owl ring and ended up buying both.. a total steal at $15 for the two.

IMG_0816IMG_0847

i also got this cute dress that came with a belt for $30. i love bargains.

IMG_0841IMG_0843

it was a trip down memory lane when we hit the tupperware booth.

IMG_0811

my mom had a LOT of old school tupperware when i was a kiddo.

IMG_0812

what really made me nostalgic was the pitcher! we had one just like it!IMG_0808IMG_0810IMG_0809

oh, tupperware, i love you.

we snagged some of these goods from shirley j’s—various spices along with a universal sauce mix that you can use to make your own cream based soups (think cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, cream of celery) at home—no more canned crap! yes!

IMG_0820

there was a huge half off sale on fitness apparel—soo many colors, i was mesmerized! IMG_0824

i ended up buying two nordic track sports bras for $15! they were regularly $35 each so it was a total deal.

IMG_0840

while wandering around, we bumped into one of my brother’s best friends, jeff.. i asked him “um, dude, what are you doing at the what a WOMAN wants show?”

he exclaimed, “i’m an inventor!”

IMG_0792

that’s right! an inventor. he invented the cell mate—which is a magnetic holder that you can place on your fridge to hold your phone!!

IMG_0789

never misplace your cell phone again. why didn’t i think of this?!

it is see through, so if you get a message or your phone starts ringing while your hands all are tied up in the kitchen while cooking, you can see what’s going on without having to touch your phone.

IMG_0791

also, you can use it for other things like coupons, recipes, pens, keys. basically anything you don’t want to misplace!

IMG_0793

i am so impressed with this handy gadget and i am thrilled that i KNOW the inventor.  i am so glad i randomly ran into him and his new invention. the cell mate is genius. (and it is only ten bucks if you want one.)

annnyway, we were so caught up with all the fun booths and 8 PM hit and the lights started turning off on us! what?! what a woman wants is MORE TIME at the what a woman wants show! i was bummed they were kicking us out. next year we will have to go earlier so we have more time to browse.

we had a young kid snap our photo just before peacing out.

IMG_0826

the what a woman wants show was a lot of fun! we saw a lot, saved a lot and took a bunch of flyers and coupons away that we will be using in the future. for those of you in utah, it is going on tomorrow, too. it was 5 bucks to get in but they have a 2-for-1 admission coupon on their website.

what is a girls night out without a treat? we stopped by a self-serve fro yo joint on the way home.IMG_0827IMG_0829

any guesses which one was mine?

IMG_0832

the fullest one, of course! i am an ice cream monster.

IMG_0834

vanilla bean, coconut, and pineapple yogurt topped with raspberries and strawberries. i polished this off in no time flat and could have gone back for more.. even though it was snowing all day. it is never too cold for ice cream.

i just realized i ate dinner at BLUE lemon and dessert at ORANGE leaf. i think that these restaurateurs just pick a color and an object and go with it. maybe i will start a café called purple umbrella.

well, it is now 10:43 PM and this girl has to get to bed. i live a wild life! i am taking momma b to bikram in the morning. her first time to a yoga class—i feel like such a seasoned veteran now, showing her the ropes.

hope you all have a glorious weekend, talk soon!

Qs~

1. what was the last meal you ordered at a restaurant? did you like it?

The what a women wants expo looks like so much fun! I’ve been curled up in my sweats for a few hours now and I didn’t even leave the house today! It was a pizza and movie kind of night. :)

Allie (Live Laugh Eat) April 8, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Janetha! Your photos from BlueLemon are GORGEOUS!!! I can’t stop staring at the hummus platter and fish tacos.

Callie @ Callieflower Kitchen April 8, 2011 at 11:00 pm

Oh my gosh I’m in love with that belt!!

edenseats April 8, 2011 at 11:03 pm

I’m so happy to see Momma b out and about! I like expos, I was at one two weeks ago but it was way too much estrogen for me all in one room!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) April 8, 2011 at 11:05 pm

I love it ALL
the owl stuff
tupperware pitcher, we had tons like that
the chocolate
crystal readings
that momma b is looking so good!
the iphone holder

Omg what a great spread of goodies and pics! :)

sophia April 8, 2011 at 11:08 pm

I LOVE expos, esp if food is involved. I don’t know what a woman wants, but I do know I always want good food! :)

Glad to see you out with your mom and having a jolly good time!

Erica April 8, 2011 at 11:10 pm

What a fun night! The dinner looks amazing- especially the hummus. And I love all of the products you got- especially the dress!!! The belt totally sells me. pineapple yogurt? Amazing. Your sis is so adorable! Looks like your Momma is doing great! I hope all of the appointments, etc went well. Last meal I ordered at a restaurant…was a brunch- so it was delicious :) We’re going to a new restaurant tomorrow night and I’m super excited about it. I honestly haven’t been to a lot of expos

Shannon April 8, 2011 at 11:33 pm

I love going to Expos, but I haven’t been to any in a long time! We went to quite a few different ones when I was younger, but not in a long time. Being that I live at the Capital of California, you’d think there’d be a lot here, but there isn’t.

My mom, brother, and I went to a Japanese restaurant for dinner tonight and I had a shrimp and rice bowl that had a ton of broccoli on top. It was huge but very very good!

Sara @ Nourish and Flourish April 8, 2011 at 11:49 pm

What a fun girls’ night! I love the pic with you, Suni and Momma B…such pretty, look-alike ladies!

You snagged some serious steals! The dress + belt are adorable. <3

megan @ the oatmeal diaries April 9, 2011 at 1:52 am

Blue Lemon sounds (and looks) amazing! I lovelovelove that dress + belt. Ooh and Orange Leaf… we recently got one near our campus! So good.

Cathy K April 9, 2011 at 2:56 am

thanks for taking us on the tour of the expo, and sharing your girls’ night out with us, j! i LOVE doing that kind of thing with my mom – she remains, to this day, my best shopping partner.
tupperware – oh yea, total fond memories from childhood. i STILL have a couple pieces that i *stole* from my mom! the stuff is indestructible! love those bright colours. and your owl ring is the cutest – good score.
did you ever finish all the vanilla bean ice cream from our wedding that was in your freezer?!
i love expos, my fave is running expos. although it’s very easy to do too much walking around and pooch your legs for the actual race! there’s a Total Woman Show every february here – never been. will have to rope my momma into going with me next year!

Cathy K April 9, 2011 at 2:58 am

*your wedding – eesh – sorry! too early in the morning!

Lee April 9, 2011 at 4:11 am

I’m so glad that your mom seems to be feeling better!

Last restaurant meal was a salad with shrimp at a Mexican place. It was okay. I love expos.

Heather April 9, 2011 at 4:37 am

i don’t love expos because i don’t love crowds…so awkward! that owl ring is BEAUTIFUL though…definitely a steal!

Lauren April 9, 2011 at 4:54 am

What a fun night! The restaurant looks fantastic and such a fun show, especially to attend with lovely ladies.

Nicole @ Fresh & Fit April 9, 2011 at 4:58 am

That expo looks like so much fun! You got some good buys. That owl jewelry is so cool!

cleaneatingchelsey April 9, 2011 at 5:26 am

I looove girl nights! That looks like so much fun.

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine April 9, 2011 at 5:41 am

That looks like such a cool expo!! I went to a vegetarian one last weekend and it was PACKED, but awesome. Lots of desserts :)

lindsay April 9, 2011 at 5:55 am

that is such a brilliant expo idea! I would attend that daily. What great night out with your lovely women.
Last meal I ordered at a restuarant? I think it was sushi from whole foods. Does that count?

Katie April 9, 2011 at 6:10 am

I love going expos :)
Last meal I ate at a restaurant was sesame ginger salmon & I was very impressed!

Karen April 9, 2011 at 6:15 am

Sounds like a really fun night with your mom and sister! The only expos I have been to were bridal expos when I was planning my wedding. They were pretty fun, I enjoyed sampling all the foods and seeing some crazy wedding ideas!

applesnoats April 9, 2011 at 6:26 am

that sounds like so much fun! im loving the dress too!

Ash April 9, 2011 at 6:28 am

Purple Umbrella actually sounds kind of pretty lol. I can imagine a logo and everything!

I have never been to an expo, but they look kind of fun!

cbrady3 April 9, 2011 at 6:58 am

The three of you are triplets! I would have loved that expo. I went to a race expo last night but it was kinda blah. Free lara bar samples at least.
But dinner wasn’t. We went out to a place called three monkeys and I got an AWESOME veggie pizza!

Ashley @ 365 things April 9, 2011 at 7:11 am

Glad you guys had a good time. :) I love expos like that!

Love the look on your face with the tupperware….you can definitely see the love…hehe

Holly at Greek Yogurt and Apple Slices April 9, 2011 at 7:19 am

YES YES, please open PURPLE umbrella- my favorite color ;)
And, we had that Tupperware pitcher too- that is SO funny- ours was like a tan-ish color. Oh tupperware- haha!
LOVE LOVE LOVE your dress. I love the blue & white stripe look for summer- adorable :)

Food & Other Things April 9, 2011 at 7:23 am

I love the owl necklace and ring you got, so cute! I’ve never been to an expo before but they always look like so much fun!

kristine April 9, 2011 at 7:35 am

omg! ha ha what color was your tupperware pitcher! ours was ORANGE!! it’s fun that they brought that old school style back! hope you’re having fun at yoga!

Carbzilla April 9, 2011 at 8:14 am

Super fun, and I don’t feel so weird now taking photos of the sunny yellow vintage Tupperware that I scored yesterday for $1.99.

withasideofhope April 9, 2011 at 8:21 am

What a fun night! I love spending time with my mom and sister too. It’s the best! I love the frozen yogurt that you had! I wish we had a self-serve yogurt place like that around here. All we have is TCBY. That expo looks like so much fun!

Erica D April 9, 2011 at 8:34 am

All that food looks amazing! And that owl ring is CUTE. I want it!

I can’t remember the last restaurant meal I had. Typical college girl! I’m so excited for my mom and sister to visit me at school soon and pamper me a little bit ;)

I’m also going to hot yoga today. Can’t wait! Although since my knees are consistently bruised during rugby season, I get angry when it’s too painful to attempt crow pose…

Mama Pea April 9, 2011 at 8:58 am

So fun!!! I’m normally not into restaurants OR expos, but I would love to hang with you lovely ladies. :)

Abby April 9, 2011 at 9:45 am

How fun! There aren’t really any expos in my area that have things that I am interested in but I would love to go to a race expo or the one that you showed above! The last thing I ordered in a restaurant was a grilled shrimp dish with rice and julienned zucchini, onion, and squash. It was just okay–pretty salty if you ask me! lol

Emily April 9, 2011 at 9:56 am

We had the same pitcher! In yellow. It was for orange juice. Tupperware memories!

1. Last restaurant meal: a green salad and the house-made pickles at Blue Plate Oysterette. Not a lot of vegan items at the Oysterette (hub’s choice, so could get his favorite red curry mussels), but I could eat a couple plates of the pickled veggies and be very happy.

2. I’ve been to a few expos in my life. They can be a great way to learn about new products in an area that you’re interested in, but I feel like lots of times you have to weed through a lot of junk to find the good stuff.

paijery April 9, 2011 at 11:43 am

LOVE that owl ring and necklace!!
I don’t think we really have too many expos around here…if we do I haven’t heard of them!
Last meal I ordered at a restaurant was a squash the meat pizza. I’d give it a 7 out of 10.
That last pic of the three of you is awesome! You all look so happy :D

Annette @EnjoyYourHealthyLife April 9, 2011 at 11:48 am

Oooh that expo looks fun! We might head up there today- thanks for the heads up (but then again, it is crazy ugly weather. boo). I LOVE fro yo!! I want some now, too. thanks ;) P.s. thanks for putting my blog on your reader :) I will check on how to do that reader thing (I am a techy idiot). Have a good one janetha!!

Barbara April 9, 2011 at 11:59 am

Omg your momma is looking amazing Janetha! So good to see her smiling! I think you need to have a cafe- the purple owl. Or hounds-tooth owl. hounds-tooth den? Owl’s Den? Purple Den? lol. Glad you guys had a wonderful ladies night- you deserve it! I an jealous of your sport’s bras!!! What a deal!
Sending lots of love
Barbara

Katie April 9, 2011 at 12:24 pm

Your “on the couch in your husband’s hoodie” sounds like every Friday night I’ve had for a year. I like to be cozy. But I also like the looks of all that show – that dress you got is adorable!

Kristen - Anywhere There's An Airport April 9, 2011 at 12:29 pm

1) Last meal was in a typical Spanish restaurant here in Madrid. They serve a high end version of typical Spanish tapas. Their bread is fantastic! Love it!

2) Expos: I wonder if they have that sort of thing in Spain? I remember a “Southern Women” expo I attended with a friend and her mom when I was 10. I think we made it our goal to collect as much free stuff as possible. Fond memories. :)

I also wanted to chime in about Bikram.

I heart Bikram yoga!

I moved to Madrid, Spain within the last year and Bikram has kept me sane! I’ve been practicing for about 4 years total and I’ve recently had the opportunity to practice in Rome and Paris! The coolest part – you don’t need to know the language! :)

Good luck with you yoga journey… I have never looked back!

Sarah April 9, 2011 at 12:48 pm

that expo looks awesome! i love doing stuff like that with my mom & sister! it sounds like a great night. :)

i just ate lunch out at a microbrewery in st. louis! i had the jamaican jerk chicken salad – it was great! it had mandarin oranges + raisins in it that ended up being perfect with the spicy chicken.

lifttorun April 9, 2011 at 12:50 pm

Those owls are so cute! Love them.
And fro yo… oh my god. Get in my belly. I wanted so badly yesterday.

1. Does dessert at Dairy Queen count as a meal? If so, I died and went to heaven when I got their blizzard of the month.

2. Expos are pretty snazzy. I have only been to a few though.

MelissaNibbles April 9, 2011 at 1:34 pm

That looks like a fun day! You have me craving fish tacos now!

I think that expo needs to come where I live. So much cool stuff!

Pure2raw twins April 9, 2011 at 2:07 pm

What a fun day filled with good company and good eats ;) And wow do all of you look so much alike!!!! That expo looks like fun :) I really enjoy going to expos especially if they have a good variety of vendors!

Michelle April 9, 2011 at 2:14 pm

Aw, the expo looks like so much fun! I went to a bridal expo last night and it was PACKED! It was so hard to move around and I could barely get any pictures. But the good news is that I walked away with a lot pamphlets and some coupons for photographers, florists, and DJs. Better get reading!

Have a good one!

livinlifeinlouie April 9, 2011 at 2:27 pm

THIS WOULD BE AWESOME~! I hope they come to stl! I love deals and I LOVe coupons!

Juliette April 9, 2011 at 5:04 pm

It was Almond Crusted Cod from Martine Cafe & it was awesome!
I have to say I haven’t really been to many expos due to my work schedule, but I think the one’s with food, fitness, & clothes/jewelry are rad.

Katie April 9, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Hahahahaa… we had the EXACT same pitcher growing up! I completely forgot about it until now. My mom used to make frozen condensed OJ in it, and we’d stir it with a wooden spoon. Oh, 80s.

ilovefetacheese April 9, 2011 at 5:20 pm

There is too much to say about this post!! First of all, that first restaurant look amazing! That expo looks so cool too. I’m obsessed with tupperware!

Susan April 9, 2011 at 5:51 pm

My old roommate needs the cellmate. She melted her blackberry by placing it on the stove!

Last thing I ordered was poutine pizza. Yup, fries and gravy on a pizza crust topped with melted cheese.

Amy April 9, 2011 at 6:10 pm

That expo looks like a fun time.. I have never been to an expo of any kind but clearly need to stop being a lame ass and get on the expo train… stat.

Amy April 9, 2011 at 6:11 pm

Oops, I just realized I said a*s (sorry!) My apologies!

Jen@jensdaily April 9, 2011 at 6:15 pm

So many things I want to comment on right now LOL! First, I want to come to Utah, just to go to Blue Lemon, it looks amazing!!! Second, LOVE the owl necklaces and the dress, so cute!!!
Third, mama B is looking fandangtastic, how is she feeling?
Hope you are having a great weekend ;)
