juice that will fill you up.

in meals

hey everyone! glad you are all enjoying my marathon post about kitchen gadgets. i was worried that it was a little too long, but i should have factored in the fact that you are all just as kitchen obsessed as me.

i think i mentioned in passing that marshall has become mister health & fitness. well, i should elaborate a bit because it’s going to be something i talk about often. when i was in chicago, marshall sent me a few texts telling me that he wanted to start working out and eating healthy all the time. i know, as if i couldn’t love him more.

anyway, he has been faithfully going to the gym every day and he has also been eating healthy meals.  actually, he used to skip breakfast and lunch and now he eats both meals consistently.  he has been incorporating more protein into his diet in the form of tuna sandwiches and protein shakes.

i promise this is going somewhere. stay with me. he used to hate protein powder. he would absolutely refuse to consume protein powder of any kind. but lately, he has started concocting protein shakes that seriously taste like ice cream milk shakes. sure, the fact that he used whole milk probably has something to do with it (he is looking to gain), but there is something about his combination of ingredients that really make those protein shakes delicious.

i recently received some POM wonderful juice*. it’s their new pomegranate cranberry flavor. i don’t know about you, but i love cranberry juice.  when i heard about POM’s new flavor fusion of pomegranate and cranberry, i was thrilled.

IMG_9036

about the juice:

    • contains no added sugars, preservatives or colors
    • is a good source of potassium
    • gluten-free
    • flash pasteurized to retain both flavor and nutrients
    • certified kosher

each bottle is 16 ounces and that is actually two servings. it is easy to be deceived by prepackaged juices.. don’t let this bottle fool you: it contains two 8 ounce servings.

IMG_9037

love that short ingredient list. just juice.

i have mentioned before that i don’t often drink juice straight up. i feel like it does nothing for me in terms of satiety.  i could drink 8 ounces of this juice for 140 calories and still be hungry, or i could eat 140 calories worth of real fruit for a very filling snack.

instead of drinking this juice straight up, i took a cue from marshall who has been pouring the juice into his delicious shakes.  i incorporated the pom cranberry juice into a filling protein shake.

IMG_9065

i had this shake immediately after my bodyrock.tv workout yesterday. it was protein packed, berry filled and had a unique pomegranate cranberry tang. absolutely delicious.

pomberry protein shake.

IMG_9044

ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/4 cup (2 oz) pom wonderful pomegranate cranberry juice
  • 1 container chobani champions verry berry yogurt
  • 1 scoop (1/2 serving) tera’s whey acai berry protein powder
  • 1/4 cup frozen blackberries
  • 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/8 tsp xanthan gum
  • 1/8 tsp guar gum
  • 5 to 7 cubes of ice

i buy berries at costco and put them straight into the freezer for shakes. this is cheap and easy.

IMG_9045

tera’s whey is one of my favorite brands of protein powder. it is organic and it is delicious. it is also expensive.. but i found it at TJ maxx awhile back and cleaned out the whole store. i have it in blueberry, acai berry, vanilla and chocolate.

IMG_9048

if you haven’t made the effort to purchase xanthan & guar gum and you make smoothies.. trust me, you NEED to make the effort. they make a big difference in terms of thickness & creaminess!

IMG_9049

blend.

IMG_9055

pour.

enjoy!

this recipe filled my parfait glass twice and kept me full for 4 hours. here are the stats:

image

the carb-to-protein ratio was perfect for post-workout nutrition and it was surprisingly super filling for 275 calories. actually, i just now did the nutrition label calculation and i am pretty (pleasantly) surprised that it kept me full for so long!

so let’s back up.. instead of drinking a 16 oz bottle of juice for 280 calories and not getting full at all, i incorporated the tasty, tangy juice into a protein packed smoothie and managed to be full for 4 hours for the same number of calories.

i think i know how i’ll be using the rest of the POM wonderful juice. that is, unless, my husband uses it all first.

on that note, we are off to the gym! love that i can say that. i will be back later tonight with a winner for the uncle sam giveaway (there’s still time to enter!) and some random bits from the weekend.

happy sunday!

Qs~

1. do you drink juice? what is your favorite kind of juice?

2. do protein shakes keep you full?

I found Tera’s Whey at a health store near us but haven’t tried it yet. Now I’m excited to try it, but I’ll have to check out T.J. Maxx to see if they have it.

I love POM juice with Jay Robb’s Pina Colada protein powder and berries. It’s good.

Am I the ONLY one whose stomach/intestines (:P) CANNOT handle xanthan and guar gum??

That is a bummer, Erin! That stuff is in SO many products out there.

Mmm, that sounds like such a winning fruit combo for their new juice! I’ll have to watch for it to hit Publix!

I dont drink juice either, for the same reasons. More sugar, seemingly empty calories, better ways to fill my belly. I occasionally water some down if I’d really like some OJ or pineapple juice, but that’s very rare. I do the same thing with the smoothies, though, for some extra flavor! I love the original POM in a smoothie, I bet that would be phenom!

YUM! This looks fantastic! I think I’m getting a sample of the pomegranate cranberry juice and I can’t wait. Protein shakes totally fill me up! Even more so when I add in some puffed cereal. I may have to try your creation when I get my juice samples! Happy Sunday

Good for Marshall! Toly gets on these kicks every now and then, but they don’t usually last a long time, LoL. Although lately, he told me he started running at the gym and not just playing Racket Ball. I almost fell over!! The boy HATES running.

I saw Tera’s Whey at my local TJ Maxx last week and thought of you!

I remember that story of yours :)

I love all those fresh berries. They would never have been made into a smoothie for me..they would have been eaten straight out of those cartons!

I don’t drink juice because it doesn’t fill me up and I’d rather just eat real fruit. Protein shakes and bars don’t keep me full either. They’re like snacks to me. Go Marshall with yo’ healthy self!

Such a fetching shade of purple! I LOVE protein shakes, to the point that I had one every day for about 5 years.

I love freshly squeezed grapefruit juice! Just had it this morning, in fact!

I totally need to buy bulk fruit and freeze it myself. It’s so simple and yet I keep paying ridiculous amounts of money for those stupid bags of frozen blueberries!

First things first, need Costco membership! :)

i typically don’t drink fruit juices. (weirdo i know). i prefer carrot juice or green juices however i am a smoothie queen! i’ve been drinking the shamrock shake lately (1/2 frozen avocado, almond milk + 3-5 sprigs fresh mint+stevia and vanilla extract) soooooo good and festive!

That’s great that Marshall has become interested in eating healthy. I wish Jason would!

I sometimes make a protein shake, but honestly, I think I like the chew of something in the morning.

I don’t drink juice for the same reasons. If I loved it I’d still have it sometimes, but it just doesn’t do much for me. I love protein shakes though. I still haven’t bought the gums… guess I have to!

don’t like juice! would rather eat a piece of fruit.
have a great sunday eve!

I love xanthan gum but I always forget that I have a container sitting around so I need to start using it again soon to get some thicker shakes! I love the color of yours, mine never turn out that pretty. They are usually some funky color scheme of brown, green, purple, etc.

I like shakes but they don’t keep me full enough to use as a replacement to a meal. I like having mine after the gym (have dinner pre gym) and that usually holds me over until the morning.

Yummm that looks awesome! And so fun that Marshall is getting on the workout/healthy eating bandwagon…It’s so hilarious that you guys are so different in that sense, like with my friends that don’t eat until dinner…I just can’t wrap my head around it!! Hope u had fun at the game today…they played the Lakers right!?!? So fun, love me some bball :D

Totally copied your idea about berries today…they were so cheap, so I bought a bunch and stuck some in the freezer. :) Loved the kitchen gadgets and can’t wait to see how you put them to use.

I hope someday Alex makes the switch like Marshall is doing and wants to workout with me and such! He does go on occasional dog walks with me and is eating (and actually liking!) more of my recipes lately, so I am grateful for his baby steps!

I don’t generally drink juice, however if I do I add water, for a 1:3 ratio… juice is just too sweet for me.

I am just starting to experiment with smoothies…I have been making a blueberry pineapple smoothie everyday…I love that i am drinking my fruit. I don’t like the taste of yogurt…I am really trying..but I added some to a smootie and couldn’t drink it! Luckily, my daughter will eat/drink anything..so she finished it up…I feel like I am not gettting the most bang for my buck without adding milk or yogurt, protein powder….I am trying though..lol

Thanks for the great tips for protein smoothies. I’ve been meaning to dive into this world for sometime but just haven’t. Buying berries at Costco and finding protein powder at TJ Maxx are AMAZING ideas! I’m definitely trying this in the very near future…thanks!

Lauren

P.S. I just started reading your blog and it’s so refreshing how REAL you are. And by real I mean still indulging in movie popcorn and eating out frequently that is a part of real life and not trying to hide it!

I have been really wanting to get some protein powder, but I’m lactose intollerant, so I can’t have the whey. Which other kind would you suggest?

Does anyone know if this is the same Protein Powder that Juice it up uses in it’s Protein Blast Shakes? I tried one today and it was tasty and very filling.

I felt like I just had much more energy than norm.. I seem to be tired daily which makes it hard to do my daily chores.. Today I couldn’t stop cleaning.
