the last few bites.

in meals

after eating my way through chicago, i was finally faced with my very last day.

we attempted to go to a brunch spot called “henrietta’s”, but it was closed due to the holiday. instead, we made the executive decision to revisit banana’s foster—the same restaurant we went to the first day of the trip.

because i got something sweet the first time around (remember my banana hotcakes?), i decided to go savory.

banana’s foster had a huge selection of various types of eggs benedict. i was an eggs benedict connoisseur back in the day, so i definitely know a good benny when i taste one.

to be different, i chose the green eggs and ham—an eggs benedict made with pesto hollandaise rather than the traditional version.

ohmygoodness, i HAVE to get my hands on a recipe for pesto hollandaise. you guys.. this was incredible!

i even complimented the restaurant owner on his delicious pesto hollandaise. i was blown away with how great it was. and unique! love that.

on the side, i ordered a traditional english side dish called “bubble & squeak”.  basically, it is a potato pancake filled with peas, carrots & brussels sprouts.

it sounded promising, but it actually ended up tasting really bland. i ate a few bites with some of my remaining pesto hollandaise—but let’s be honest, i was really just using the bubble & squeak as a vehicle to get more pesto hollandaise in my mouth.

after brunch it was already time to head to the airport! we took the train to o’hare, so it was almost a 2 hour process to get from danny’s apartment to the airport.

we said our goodbyes and gave hugs and were on our way.

by the time we got to the airport, we were hungry again. go figure.. my stomach is so stretched out from this trip that i am now constantly hungry!

we hadn’t experienced a real chicago dog the whole time we were in chicago, so we decided that an airport chicago dog would have to do.

better late than never, eh? i actually really don’t like hot dogs. you know when people ask what food you hate? my answer is hot dogs. but.. ya know.. when in rome.

my favorite part was the super soft poppyseed bun. i could have done without the hot dog.. but that bun? delicious! call me a carb whore. i won’t challenge it.

five or six long hours later, we were finally back in the SLC!

and that, my friends, concludes my many a chicago recaps.

hope you enjoyed!

i will be back later.. i have some cookies to bake.

1. do you like hot dogs? me=no. the only time i really have enjoyed a hot dog is when i was camping and it got pretty charred over the open fire, i was too drunk to care, and i washed it down with some toasted marshmallows.

2. do you consider yourself a connoisseur of anything? what? i always have to order hummus if it’s on the menu. when i didn’t really care about eating healthy on a regular basis, i used to be a philly cheesesteak connoisseur and, like i said, an eggs benny connoisseur.

i want to go to chicago now, i like to say that word too haha. Or anywhere that has more extravagant restaurants that Saskatoon, we’re pretty boring here.
I dont really care for hot dogs that much, the only time when its really good is when you had a long day at the lake or at my dads acreage (its roughing it out there, no running water – outhouse territory), and you can cook it over a fire. then i enjoy them

Erica February 24, 2011 at 8:19 pm

owww- what a fun brunch dish! Bummer that the side dish wasn’t as good. I used to like hot dogs…but now they kind of freak me out haha. I’m a parfait connoisseur ;) Hooray for almost Friday! Hope your cookies are fantastic

Christin@purplebirdblog February 24, 2011 at 8:22 pm

Back in the day I was a spinach dip connoisseur. I totally order all the hummus I can get my hands on these days.

Mac February 24, 2011 at 8:23 pm

I LOVE hot dogs and would LOVE to try the Chicago dog when I go there sometime! The key to hot dogs is to not think about what they’re made of lol

livinlifeinlouie February 24, 2011 at 8:40 pm

I feel the same way about hot dogs. But give me a hamburger anyday!

edenseats February 24, 2011 at 9:05 pm

I got really tired of hollandaise because I had to practice making it nearly every day in culinary school! But I’ve never had it jazzed up like that with pesto. Being a basil whole, I’m surprised I never thought of combing the two!
And jeez woman, did chi town pay you for all this positive advertising!? they, should, at least in food!

I’m more of a burger girl, but there is this famous hot dog stand in LA called pinks with lines around the block, you would think its a nightclub. And it totally worth the wait!

Amanda February 24, 2011 at 9:23 pm

That pesto hollandaise looks crazy delicious.

I am a huge fan of red wine, chocolate chip cookies and greek yogurt. Oh man. And real ice cream! Definitely an ice cream connoisseur.

Michelle... February 24, 2011 at 9:26 pm

I admit: I LOVE hot dogs. I was so exited to try a Chicago dog when I was there a few years ago and it didn’t disappoint.

hmmm, connoisseur…poached eggs: my dad made them for me all the time growing up, so they must be cooked perfectly! Also: cupcakes and wood-fired pizza. Probably other things too :-)

Enjoyed the travel recaps!

Alison February 24, 2011 at 9:37 pm

I love hotodgs. My 90/10 percentage of veggie living would be 100/100 if it wasn’t for polish sausage and hotdogs…of all meats…can’t explain it..just gotta love it.

meezamyself February 24, 2011 at 10:08 pm

Hot dogs are disgusting. I will eat them if they are all beef and smothered in chili and cheese. Otherwise no.

Sausage is all good though. Yum, hot links.

Paije February 25, 2011 at 1:22 am

Pesto hollandaise whaaaaat? It looks insane. And your pictures are incredible.
I have never been a fan of hotdogs really…not even veggie hotdogs. Before I became a vegetarian I used to love cheese smokies! No idea why lol :D

1970kikiproject February 25, 2011 at 4:23 am

oh, sad for the end of the chicago recaps – thanks for sharing your trip with us, j!
haven’t had a hot dog in YEARS, but i am with ya on the “when in rome” philosophy – and i would totally have that chicago style one. reminds me of how they do them up in quebec – the only other place i could be enticed to have one, again.
i am a connaisseur of cereal. that’s my game.

Naomi(onefitfoodie) February 25, 2011 at 4:38 am

bleh I don’t like hot dogs either! I acutally dont like typical bbq food like dogs OR burgers, BUT when in rome, I love your would take me a lot to buy a hot dog but in chi town I guess you have to right? its like going to maine and not getting lobster!

you go girl! i have never had hollaindaise sauce either! cant wait for your recipe!

Lauren February 25, 2011 at 4:57 am

This trip has to be one of the most delicious trips I’ve seen in awhile. I LOVE the idea of pickles on a hot dog. That sounds like every pregnant woman’s dream!!

So glad you are back safely but even happier you had an incredible time.

Erika February 25, 2011 at 5:01 am

Eh, I’m not a fan of hot dogs either. They’re a little better when cooked over a fire, but still, I don’t like them.
Glad you had a wonderful time in Chicago! :]

withasideofhope February 25, 2011 at 5:57 am

I want to visit Chicago so badly! It seems like it’s an amazing city with so many great restaurants! Thank you for sharing your trip! I’m so glad that you had a great time! :)

I think hot dogs are okay. Sometimes I enjoy eating them but I don’t ever crave them. I like eating hot dogs at Phillies games. :)

Kristin (Cook, Bake, Nibble) February 25, 2011 at 6:30 am

Pesto hollandaise? Yum!

Hot dogs kinda freak me out, once you know what they are, ya know? lol

BUT I also consider myself a hummus connosieur ;)

Kathie February 25, 2011 at 7:25 am

i actually dont mind hot dogs..tho that one doesnt look that good. ha

MelissaNibbles February 25, 2011 at 7:39 am

Not a fan of hot dogs. I’m a connesuir of frosting.

Michelle A. February 25, 2011 at 7:56 am

I do not like hot dogs. They creep me out and I can’t bring myself to eat them.

I used to be quite the Cinnamon Bear (the gummy candy) connoisseur!

Kelly February 25, 2011 at 7:58 am

I love hot dogs…not gonna lie. My favorites are the Hebrew Nationals that are charred over a charcoal grill…yum! Is 9:00am too early for a hot dog? Thanks a lot! :)

Lindsay February 25, 2011 at 8:00 am

I’m really bummed to hear the “Bubble & Squeak” was disappointing it looks so delicious. I think I might try to make my own. Not a huge fan of the hot dogs either but NYC vendors have it down right. Glad to see you had a stomach filled blast in Chicago!

lowandbhold February 25, 2011 at 9:09 am

I actually just had a pig in a blanket, cuter hot dog, this morning. It was completely random but tasty. I only eat them once in a blue moon.

Kate February 25, 2011 at 9:14 am

I have to be honest – I actually really like hot dogs. Mustard, Ketchup, and onions. I love Costco hot dogs. Just the smell…I haven’t had one in a long time. They don’t exactly jive with dieting. :)

Definitely not a food connoisseur of anything!

Susan February 25, 2011 at 9:30 am

I love hot dogs! Smothered in as many condiments as possible. They take me back to childhood birthday parties :)

I like to think I’m a bit of a croissant and cinnamon bun connoisseur. I also know a good cup of coffee, but I’m not a snob about it. When I’m in need of caffeine I’ll drink anything!

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine February 25, 2011 at 9:58 am

My brother is a eggs benedict fiend, but I’ve actually never even had them. Eggs kind of gross me out!

I’m a dark chocolate connoisseur. That and crappy beer. I can taste a Miller from a Bud like that :)

Tamsin February 25, 2011 at 10:40 am

If I see “reuben” on the menu, I feel compelled to order it. The weird thing is that reubens are probably not even in my top ten favorite foods. Oh, I also have to order any dessert that features Guinness. I don’t think I need to explain that.

PS… I think half of my dinners last week featured hotdogs, so I guess I fall under the “like” side of the hotdog debate. Also, can’t wait for baseball season — ballpark hotdogs are 50% of the reason I go to games.

Rose February 25, 2011 at 10:56 am

I looooooooooooooove hot dogs. Any excuse to eat them. I have trouble going to Costco without eating a hot dog. It’s the only reason I like going to baseball games.

I have become a connoisseur of bacon. And iced tea. Most breakfast places do both all wrong.

Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather February 25, 2011 at 10:57 am

That pesto hollandaise sound amazing! When you add pesto to anything you just can’t go wrong.

Me and hot dogs… Mmm no thanks. Now me and chicken sausage or maybe a brat – yes!

Jess February 25, 2011 at 11:12 am

I’m not a huge fan of hot dogs, either.

Holly at Greek Yogurt and Apple Slices February 25, 2011 at 11:45 am

Nope, not a hot dog person. but I will take a turkey burger any day ;)
I have to agree though, the bun looks awesome!
I’m so glad you had such a nice trip to Chicago- all of these re-caps make me want to go! & I never had any desire to go there.

cbrady3 February 25, 2011 at 12:04 pm

I only really like hot dogs at baseball games. but since I’ve become a vegetarian, I don’t care for them at all anymore.

And I claimed the other day to be a cookie expert, but that’s probably a bit too complimentary for my actual knowledge!

Rachel (Olalliberry) February 25, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Wow that pesto hollandaise looks amazing! I love eggs benedict but have never tried to make it myself.

I can enjoy a hot dog maybe once a year, in the summer, on the grill. With potato chips tucked in between the dog and the bun :)

Stephanie February 25, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Pesto hollandaise sounds amazing. I wouldn’t consider myself a connoiseur of anything..more a lover of all things. The ONLY time I eat hot dogs is when I’ve been camping. :) Definitely something I avoid.

coffeeandthepaper February 25, 2011 at 12:13 pm

I’m suing you for egg porn. Get off the internet, dirty!

Haha just kidding.

I’ve adored reading your Chi-town recaps. You guys had so much fun and totally lived it up, as you should.

I don’t know if I’m a connoisseur of anything…maybe coffee? I don’t eat out often enough to have a restaurant staple. My dad, however, judges a place based on its vanilla milkshakes!

Caree @ Fit-Mama February 25, 2011 at 12:55 pm

I love eggs benedict but that looks amazing! yum!

BroccoliHut February 25, 2011 at 9:06 pm

I never really considered myself a big hot dog fan, but oddly enough when I became a vegetarian, they were what I craved the most! Veggie dogs seemed to cure the craving though.
I, too, consider myself a hummus expert–I always order it if it’s available. What texture do you like? I like the hearty, chunky kinds that aren’t too oily/runny.

kissmybroccoli February 26, 2011 at 8:05 am

Carb whore! Haha! Love it! I’m not a big fan of hot dogs…they just don’t really do it for me. I can think of a million things I’d rather eat!

I’ve never had eggs Benedict before, but your breakfast looks amazing! Mmm!

I like to think of myself as a connoisseur of coffee. Or maybe I’m just a picky coffee snob! If I didn’t brew it…I won’t drink it! Lol

elise February 26, 2011 at 12:21 pm

i think its safe to say i too am a hummus connoisseur – and coffee :)

Sarah February 26, 2011 at 6:25 pm

pesto hollandaise sounds amazing! :)

i consider myself a cheese connoisseur for sure!
