saturday FTW.

by Janetha on September 26, 2010

in meals,moves

by the way: “FTW” means “for the win”.. i am an acronym freak.

thanks for all your comments about my crappy day on friday! i have to say, my mood has changed 100% and i am happy as a clam.

wait, how do we know clams are happy? i mean.. especially the ones that get eaten.  there is NO way they are happy.  i am going to change my simile and say i am happy as randy the dog.

after a busy, fun and productive saturday.. i am sitting here in an oversized hoodie & boy shorts and lounging my life away, big hug mug of coffee in hand.  it is 11:13 AM.  i haven’t even brushed my bed head hair. but don’t worry, i have brushed my teeth.  with my fancy new toothbrush.  more on that in a moment.

let’s take it from the top!

saturday morning i woke up, changed into my running shorts and headed straight to the gym.  i wanted to get my workout out of the way nice and early.

i did a standard body for life style HIIT:

minute # speed (MPH) intensity (RPE)
1 6 5
2 6 5
3 6.5 6
4 7 7
5 7.5 8
6 8 9
7 6.5 6
8 7 7
9 7.5 8
10 8 9
11 6.5 6
12 7 7
13 7.5 8
14 8 9
15 6.5 6
16 7 7
17 7.5 8
18 8 9
19 9 10
20 6 5

i finished up with 5 minutes of speed walking and the workout was 3 miles total.

i came home, showered, and made some pumpkin greek yogurt.

pumpkin greek yogurt is easy to make.  combine about 2/3 cup greek yogurt, a big spoonful of canned pumpkin, and a generous shake of both cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice.

i love my owl spoon!

someone commented that his name should be “owlfred”.. whoever it was, (i am too lazy to check back, truth be told)—YOU WIN.  owlfred it is!

i added some cereal & muesli to the yogurt for some crunch & chew factor.

any excuse i can use to eat more cereal, right?

after polishing off my yogurt mess, we headed to the farmers’ market.  it was pretty late, so we only caught the tail end of the market.  also, my camera died about 15 minutes into all of the fun :(

probably because i spent so much battery power on these goons.

IMG_9937 IMG_9944  IMG_9950 IMG_9935

favorite shot in 3, 2, 1..

marshall snagged one of those old library book notebooks and a light switch plate.  i’ve mentioned both before.

and this is the last photo that we got before death to my battery occurred!

we proceeded through the market and purchased some peaches & plums. delicious.

we dropped the pups off at home and made a costco run.  we got the basics like chobani, drinks, cereal (for marshall, come on!).. but we also made a purchase we have been lusting after for awhile now..

a couple of sonicare toothbrushes!  they were on sale for $79.99 for the pair.  can’t beat that.  i used to have a sonicare when i was a teenager.. i love these things! they kind of tickle your mouth at first.. but you get a nice, good teeth cleaning and the toothbrush shuts off by itself, so you always brush for long enough.

we picked up some lunch to bring home with us.

“Cg”= chicken bowl with guacamole!

i get mine with fajita veggies, black beans, chicken, pico, corn salsa, lettuce and guac!

some mixing required.

$hot. i love how they aren’t stingy with the guac!IMG_9969

i added a dollop of oikos greek yogurt on top.. i wish mexican places offered this instead of sour cream! i actually prefer it to sour cream.

i must have been hungry because i almost polished off the whole bowl. that is rare!

momma b & my dad (i don’t have a clever blog nickname for him!) came over and helped with some interior decorating layout planning.  we took some measurements and decided on the rug size we need for our living room.. and then i purchased this rug! in 8’ x 11’.

you can click the link to see it bigger. do you like it? i am excited to finally bring some color into the room!  we also ordered some tables that are being custom built.  when it is all done, i will be sure to do some before/after shots.

next activity for my busy saturday.. i headed to TJ maxx!  all by myself. with 2 hours to kill.  you better believe i spent the whole time there. i LOVE TJ maxx and just enjoy browsing all the racks and aisles.. taking my time. it was so relaxing, just what i needed!

i ended up purchasing 2 shirts (i have an unusual attraction to always buying blue, 3/4 length sleeve shirts!), a pair of green pants & an oversized roxy hoodie (which i am currently wearing), TWO canisters of tera’s whey protein powder.. this stuff is about $25 at whole foods, it was only $14.99! score. you guys should see if your TJ maxx has it!

a super soft throw for the couch.. marshall & i are obsessed with finding the SOFTEST blankets. we call ‘em “softies”.. randy already has found use for it ;)

and this awesome mail holder.  we are going to add some key hooks to the bottom of it and hang it on the wall by the door.  that way, we can hang our keys and put the unopened mail all in one convenient spot! i love that it matches the kitchen.

after putting away all my goodies, i quickly made some dinner to go.  we were heading to the REAL game (salt lake city’s soccer team) and i knew i didn’t want to eat any of the stadium food.

my camera was still dead so i used the point & shoot. the difference in the photos is crazy to me! i <3 DSLR cameras.

i packed:

turkey & spinach sandwich on dave’s killer bread, sanpellegrino

apple & almond butter

i ended up only eating the sandwich!  i guess i wasn’t as hungry as i anticipated.  i think the chipotle bowl kept me full for a lonnnng time.

the game was a blast!

mr & mrs four eyes. IMG_9979 IMG_9978

we ended up tying at the very last minute. hey, it is better than losing, right?! thumbs up!

after the game, we headed home and my sweet tooth kicked in.  i had 1/2 cup vanilla bean ice cream and a deep chocolate vitatop. i am sure you can imagine what that looked like.  we turned on “it’s always sunny in philadelphia” and laughed into the wee hours of the night.

what a great saturday :)

well.. it is now 11 minutes past noon! i am such a slacker! we are heading to brunch and then running a few errands before attending a comedy show.  the best part is the comedian’s name is doug benson.. which happens to be my brother’s name! random.

oh, by the way, today is national pancake day! i hope y’all celebrate accordingly!!

i will most likely not be back tonight, but i will check in tomorrow afternoon.. i hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a top notch monday (if that is possible…)

1. do you ever pack your own meal when you go to events (sporting, concerts, etc) that don’t offer anything you’d want to eat? does it embarrass you? i am all for taking my own food. it is cheaper and my belly is happier. i honestly don’t like the greasy pizzas or boiled hot dogs that the stadium offers.  i shamelessly eat my packed sandwich.. the only trick is getting your own food through the security line ;)

2. in celebration of national pancake day: what is your FAVORITE kind of pancake? i love whole wheat pancakes topped with peanut butter & my mom’s raspberry jam.

I totally agree with you. Taking my own food is cheaper, healthier, and doesn’t weigh me down like greasy fast food stuff does.

I love oatmeal pancakes with a yummy fruit topping – like warmed peaches!! :) And maybe a drizzling of almond butter on top!!

Erica September 26, 2010 at 12:36 pm

LOVE a good lazy Sunday! We got out and about pretty early to go with Josh’s parents to look at houses (they’re HOPEFULLY going to move near us), so no laze here. That pumpkin/yogurt/cereal combo looks like a total winner. I just bought some more pumpkin, I see that mix in my near future. And totally jealous of the chipotle! I almost always pack bars, fruits & veggies when we’re going somewhere for a while and I’m not sure how the eats will be (better to be safe!). Andddd my favorite pancakes- probably oatmeal cookie or graham cracker

janetha September 26, 2010 at 12:40 pm

i HAVE to try your graham cracker pancakes! i love graham crackers.

Carbzilla September 26, 2010 at 12:51 pm

Just noticed that FTW WTF is a palindrome!

Guess I’m in more of a WTF mood than a FTW mood. Stupid unemployment issues and just heard a friend was asked to move out of her apt b/c her dog was barking too much. Boo.

Here’s to a happy as Randy day!

mom September 26, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Hahaha before reading this I polished off 2 buttermilk pancakes with pb and raspberry jame and 2 runny eggs wow I matched a food day!

Looks like some great finds at TJ Maxx, yep I find an hour or so of browsing is very soothing, we must be related!

Yes, I have been known to smuggle my own food into events especially during our BFL challenge.

Happy sabbath to you all xoxoxo!

PS LoVe the pup photos!

caronae September 26, 2010 at 1:02 pm

Ooooo I love owl spoon! :) I also love cheap protein powder! Hehe.

Hope you’re having a wonderful Sunday Janetha!

Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) September 26, 2010 at 1:02 pm

I love my sonicare! Don’t you love how clean it makes your teeth feel?! It’s almost as good as getting your teeth cleaned. Yep, I’m one of those ‘weirdo’s’ that likes getting her teeth cleaned…. as often as possible. lol.

PS You rock those glasses! ;)

thedelicateplace September 26, 2010 at 1:35 pm

i take my food everywhere. seriously. i’m cheap and i think most times my stuff tastes better anyway. i never eat anything that i don’t want to just for the sake of eating it! today i celebrated with indian spiced flax pancakes (recipe to come soon) with a fresh chopped bosc pear and a scoop of almond dream vanilla DF ice cream!

p.s. i like your glasses!

Angharad September 26, 2010 at 2:11 pm

Stellar sounding saturday miss thang! I love days like that.

I have no problem taking my own food places – my mum always used to do it when we were little. It definitely embarrassed me then but not now!

Pancakes. Mm. There is a breakfast place here called Al’s that makes the BEST blueberry buttermilk pancakes. Fave.

Heather (Where's the Beach) September 26, 2010 at 2:14 pm

Oh loving the pumpkin yogurt idea. Yummy. And love all the pics of the pups – how can you not smile??!!!! Being vegetarian, I almost always take my own food to events like parties, gatherings. I even take beans or tofu out to eat when I know there will be no alternate protein source. I have no shame ;-)

coffeeandthepaper September 26, 2010 at 2:31 pm

What a fun Saturday with Marsh (can I call him that?) and your ‘rentsies. Ball games are such fun! Omg, I just said “such” instead of “so much”. Bah.

WW pancakes all the way! Though I do not discriminate.

Tamizn September 26, 2010 at 2:52 pm

I always take my own, safer that way I know whats gone in it so no bad surprises! x x

kristy @ ksayerphotography September 26, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Your yogurt mess looks delicious!
I always pack my own meal when going out to places where I know I won’t be able to find food i’ll like (or if i’m not certain), that way I know I won’t go hungry :P Sometimes it embarrasses me a little to sit down to my packed meal, but I know I enjoy it 100x more than anything I could’ve bought.
I’ve actually used medical excuses to get my packed food through security lines. It’s a good thing I know lots of medical terms :P

As for pancakes, I can’t say I have a favourite as I’m not actually a big pancake fan. But I did have a french friend almost tempt me into pancake loving territory with banana pancakes topped with nutella. Yummm.

Mary (A Merry Life) September 26, 2010 at 3:01 pm

Yay weekend posts!

1. do you ever pack your own meal when you go to events (sporting, concerts, etc) that don’t offer anything you’d want to eat? does it embarrass you? I’ve taken my own food to games, movies, etc. As long as I can get my food in without trouble I’m happy to eat it. Saves money and it’s what I want instead of paying for something I don’t.

2. in celebration of national pancake day: what is your FAVORITE kind of pancake? My fav are whole wheat topped with almond butter and banana. Yum!

MelissaNibbles September 26, 2010 at 3:15 pm

Looks like a fun filled day! Love that owl spoon.

lindsay September 26, 2010 at 4:10 pm

all I have to say is that I am going to TJ maxx right now!!!! Good finds!

Dana September 26, 2010 at 4:53 pm

I am a ginormous pancake fan. And even that is an understatement. I’d have them every day if I could, but I think if I did that I wouldn’t appreciate them enough when I DO have them, which is about twice a month.

My fave pancake combo is either buckwheat or whole wheat pancakes topped with crunchy peanut butter and sliced bananas and drizzled generously with honey. If you haven’t tried this combination, you MUST. It’s insanely good.

Great blog. Love all the photos. And you and your husband are adorable.

-Dana : )

Krista September 26, 2010 at 5:13 pm

I tried to sneak a bottle of water into a Seattle Mariners baseball game and they actually look inside any bag you bring into the building so they made me pour it out! I just refilled it up on the inside from a water fountain but I’m glad I hadn’t tried to bring any food with me. Normally I bring my own food to places all the time.
I could not even come close to picking my favorite pancakes, I love them all!

Tina September 26, 2010 at 6:14 pm

I definitely take my own food into events where I know there likely won’t be anything I really want to eat. Or into theme parks because they have such overpriced junk.

You always have such fun filled weekends!

jen September 26, 2010 at 6:32 pm

did you just start watching “it’s always sunny”? i freakin’ love that show! i used to work in old city, so i used to get coffee at the place where charlie’s coffee shop girl works. i didn’t know it had gotten famous. :p

Abby September 26, 2010 at 7:23 pm

It’s a good thing you live on the other side of the country, because I would probably be a huge stalker. I love so much about this post and none of it really had to do with food. I am pretty sure I would be happy as Randy the dog as well. :)

Anyway, I totally bring my own food. Being a vegetarian you’re usually limited with the options, as people think pasta, ice berg lettuce and something with cheese are the staples we consume. Plus, I’m super picky and super cheap. Better safe than sorry!

BroccoliHut September 26, 2010 at 7:31 pm

I used to bring my own food to Duke basketball games all the time until they confiscated my Larabar. Sheesh.

Heather September 26, 2010 at 8:36 pm

Owlfred…LOVE it! :)

I ALWAYS have snacks in my purse (aka Mary Poppins bag) whenever I’m out and about. I call it my “survival food” Lol. My friends and family joke about me keeping snacks with me, but they’re always grateful when they get bitten by the hungry bug and I’m there to rescue them!

Love basically any and all pancakes…favorite would have to be whole wheat pumpkin! Anything with pumpkin is stellar!

runningaroundnormal September 26, 2010 at 8:59 pm

The dogs are entirely too precious. We need to figure out how to clone them, don’t you agree?!
What a fun Saturday! You packed a lot in! :)
I bring a couple snacks usually when I go to events, but sometimes I secretly like the bad ball park-eque food :D
Have a great night!!

Marie September 26, 2010 at 9:01 pm

The owl spoon is sooo cute!

Hmm, I’ve never thought to smuggle food in before because that was back before we were healthy and I would be too scared of getting caught to do it now.

My favorite pancakes are pumpkin as well. I use a recipe from the Pinch My Salt blog and they are most fluffy pancakes ever; so good!

Love the pup pics! :)

Brynne September 26, 2010 at 9:10 pm

I always pack my own meals – I’m so much happier with my choices and save money. And blueberry pancakes FTW :)

Runeatrepeat September 26, 2010 at 9:10 pm

No kidding I almost bought that nail/key holder from Marshall’s today, but it doesn’t match our kitchen so I talked myself out of it!
I love FTW.

edenseats September 26, 2010 at 9:54 pm

I had NO idea it was pancake day! good think I had my fill (it was the recipe spotlight in my blog!).
I bought my first can o’ pumpkin of the season yesterday and I’m totally doing your yogurt mix. I only with I had your groovy owl spoon.
I DO take foods to events, I think I’m just too OCD about my food though so I dont think I do it for a good reason. I think I’m just scarred I’ll be hungry and I won’t eat the semi-questionable fare they tend to sell at those events. And lord knows, no one wants to be next to Eden when she’s hungry.
And I love generous guac joints. I think I’m going to open up a guac bar. All we serve is guac and maybe beer or fresca (no reason for the fresca, I just love it).

Vanessa Nielsen September 26, 2010 at 9:54 pm

Pumpkin Greek yogurt sounds AMAZING. And so very timely!

lizzyj1305 September 26, 2010 at 11:17 pm

awww you and your family are so beautiful! look how happy those pups are!
Tera’s whey is delish, I wish my TJMaxx had it!
I hope you had a great weekend and have an awesome week ahead of you!!!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) September 26, 2010 at 11:49 pm

bringing food into places? that’s a HELL YES! if you ever get flack about it, just use the toddler/kiddie snacks card. that you’re “meeting up with your daughter” who’s already with her dad..whatever, get creative :)

The sonic-care. True story and no i dont work for them :) I have never had a cavity but in my early 20s was going to CRAPPY dentists and didnt know any better til i moved to CA. I had receding gums and all kinds of issues that could have gotten gnarly. I started using the sonic care like 6-7 yrs ago and seriously my mouth went from no cavities but other issues to 100% perfect. Scott’s really bad gum disease went from really bad to barely noticeable. They are the BEST brushes ever. No, i dont work for them :)

actorsdiet September 27, 2010 at 12:20 am

i love bringing new snacks from tj’s to events. they’re always so much better than what’s there (and cheaper too!)

doggies :)

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine September 27, 2010 at 6:01 am

I ALWAYS bring food to sporting events/anything else. I’m happy to wing it if the food should be good, but hot dogs and cheese fries? No, thank you :) Glad you had such a good weekend!

Jamie @ Food in Real Life September 27, 2010 at 6:41 am

Looks like a great weekend! I love all of your pictures, they really capture the fun!
I don’t always pack my own food for events, but you will never find me without a few snacks in my purse.

Freckled Foodie September 27, 2010 at 8:09 am

i’ve gotte check out tj maxx for whey! i’ve been wanting to try that brand…

i always take my own food to stuff. mostly bc it’s cheaper and i enjoy it more than i would some $10 crap salad with a few lettuce leaves from a subpar concession stand :)

denise September 27, 2010 at 8:29 am

I win! Owlfred definitely fits.

Your dogs are amazingly cute!

lowandbhold September 27, 2010 at 8:54 am

I love having time to shop to my heart’s content. I am a lone shopper for sure. Love the mail holder!

cbrady3 September 27, 2010 at 10:09 am

I actually just packed my own sandwich and apple to sneak into the Rams game yesterday! I always do at baseball games too.

And funny – I call my best friend’s mom “Mama B” too…and her dad is just “Papa B”. Not very creative I guess

Mama Pea September 27, 2010 at 10:41 am

I always cart around my own food which has led to a few awkward protein powder bags in my purse. Explaining that is not cool.

Hmm…I love apple cinnamon and blueberry pancakes! But then again, I never met a pancake I didn’t like.

Happy Monday! (Can I borrow Randy, puhleeez?!)

julie September 27, 2010 at 11:54 am

do you not LOVE getting workouts done bright and early on saturdays! seriously it’s like the best way to start off the weekend :)

i think people tend to forget the friggn amazingness of marshalls, home goods & tj maxx haha

Katie September 27, 2010 at 12:04 pm

I will bring my own food anywhere! I have zero shame when it comes to that… if I have time to kill I often go to Starbucks and just have tea, so I’ll have somewhere to go and eat my own food in peace!

Hmm… favorite pancakes is a toughie! I love pumpkin pancakes, and I also love banana+chocolate chip. My dad makes these great baked “German” pancakes with apples that we usually have on Christmas morning, and they’re pretty fantastic.

Naomi(onefitfoodie) September 27, 2010 at 2:47 pm

ohh I think you can totally guess that I am SUCH a meal packer when I go to events! When I went to NH with Jason for the bike weekend this past June, I packed a whole cooler of food knowig we would have a fridge in our room. I always like to pack “just in case” there is no other food that I am totally loving. I love knowing that I have my OWN food, ya know??

teras whey you are SO SO LUCKY you found in there. I go to TJ maxx about once a week lol so I will def check there this week when I hit that up! thanks for the info!

pancake? favorite—banana!

Danica September 27, 2010 at 4:54 pm

So many cute pics of you, marshall, the pups! I think my fav is randy in the blanket.

I LOVE Owlfred too :D

MMMM, Chipotle -I think I could go there “almost” every day!

xoxo ~ 1 month – woohoo!!!

simplyshaka September 27, 2010 at 4:59 pm

I love taking my own food—the food at events is so expensive nowadays (wow how old do I sound typing that??) I thought you would be a fool NOT to take stuff.

I love soft blankets unfortunately my dog seems to claim them as his own once I bring them home. Example, right now I am under a “softie” and he is under it too. Spoiled.

I would love the irony of Mexican places servicing Greek yogurt!

hayleycepeda September 29, 2010 at 5:36 am

I LOVE the rug!! Those are my favorite kind of colors for the interior of a house. Good choice!

Yes I am guilty of always bringing my own meals to events unless I am planning on eating there and I know there will be healthy options. I am notorious for making batches of protein pancakes/waffles and shoving them in my backpack (I like them so much I’ll eat ’em cold!) or Myoplex Lites or cottage cheese and fruit or whatever. I wish they offered more healthy options at sporting events because there have been times when they’ve made me throw everything away – including my water bottle! Totally pisses me off…maybe next time I’ll shove some stuff in my bra. Ha ha! Ok maybe not – that would give me some seriously deformed boobs. Although who’d have the balls to ask? :)
