in meals,moves

do you ever have those weeks where you wake up on tuesday and swear it has to be friday.. but it is only tuesday.. and then the rest of the week proceeds to drag on like there is no tomorrow? well that is me this week. and i am really hoping there is a tomorrow.. because that would mean that it would be friday. and that’s just what i need.

had to vent. work crap. moving on!

meals

there is a massive sale on all the cereals in the natural foods aisle at my grocery store. i bought two boxes. kashi go lean and the all natural version of honey bunches of oats (i think the brand is mom’s or something like that).  SO, breakfast this morning was two bowls of cereal with skim milk. yep, two. granted, i was too lazy to take a photo of said breakfast, but it had to be noted to prove that cereal, while very tasty (it is one of my favorite foods!), does NOT hold me over until lunch time.

lots of problems and drama at work and an empty coffee cup don’t help, either.

when i finally got around to making lunch, 4.5 hours after my not so filling cereal, i practically inhaled this. pardon the blinding florescent lighting.. i had no time to make it look pretty by the window like i usually do…

IMG_0165

i got more “eww, what are you eating?” comments than usual today.  not sure why, this looks perfectly normal to me.. although i have to remember that my preferred meal combos are NOT the norm in society.  oh well, it sure was tasty.

IMG_0166

a big pile of normandy style veggies (just a fancy way of saying carrots, cauliflower & broccoli), one baked sweet potato (sliced), 1 cup of low fat cottage cheese and a healthy squirt of ketchup.  i think it was the ketchup that set one co-worker over the edge.  what? ketchup goes on everything! (hi, amanda!)

i think i let my hunger go too long between breakfast and lunch (i blame work issues) so i was just NOT satisfied with eating something that would typically fill me up.  less than an hour later, i headed to the kitchen to grab my snack.

IMG_0169

gala apple + mighty maple peanut butter. match made in snack heaven.

IMG_0170

eaten at my desk. oh, guess what else is at my desk now??

IMG_0173

cuuuuute. now i can stare at his mug all day long :)

the nut butter did the trick to getting my belly to finally decide it was full.  hey, maybe i should have put a dollop of peanut butter on my cereal this morning?!

because i ate my snack earlier than usual, i didn’t have anything to eat around 4 PM when i usually eat a snack.  i headed home at 5 and grabbed something light to fuel me through my workout.

IMG_0175

two swedish crackers from IKEA topped with cottage cheese and black pepper.

IMG_0176

i didn’t want to eat too much because my planned workout involved cardio.. and i hate doing cardio on a full belly. the crackers are 40 calories/10 carbs each and i distributed 1/2 cup cottage cheese over the two.. so the snack was about 180 calories total. just right.

moves

kristen and i had not seen each other in almost two weeks.  that should be some kind of crime.. nobody should go that long without seeing their best friend!  she had mentioned her desire to run bleachers, so we made a date out of it tonight.  we headed to a local high school for some track & bleacher shenanigans.

IMG_9827IMG_9824

the bleachers had 22 steps.. my favorite number!! score. what you don’t see is a stairway leading up to the bleachers on the right (10 steps) and a stairway leading back to the ground on the left (10 steps).  keep that in mind when you read the workout.

we did the following routine:

  • 1 lap around the track (0.25 mile)
  • up the 10 steps to the bleachers
  • up and down the right row of bleachers (22 steps up, 22 steps down)
  • run across to the left row of bleachers
  • up and down the left row of bleachers (22 steps up, 22 steps down)
  • down the 10 steps to the ground
  • run across back to the “up” stairway on the right side
  • repeat the up/down/around process five more times (for a total of six laps in one routine)

after the sixth lap on the bleachers, it was back to the track for another quarter mile.  we did this four times through.  that equates to a full mile on the track and 24 laps on the bleachers. whew!

IMG_9820

catching some air!

IMG_9821

kristen busted out some strength training on the bleachers.. lunges & tricep dips! IMG_9825

we left just as the sun was setting.

IMG_9823IMG_9826

this was probably the most time i have spent on a high school track. ever. in my life. ten years out of high school. i was not an athletic gal growing up.  snowboarding was the only physical activity you’d catch me doing and i despised gym class.  i hated climbing the rope, running laps around the track and doing those stupid fitness tests where you had to see how far you could reach on the ruler. i never even made it to the ruler! (in fact, i still cannot touch my toes, to this day.) i especially hated the days where i had to participate in competitive sports. i do not excel in any sport involving balls (TWSS)… soccer? nope. basketball? yeah right. softball? no thanks. volleyball? maybe the worst of them all!  i’m not going to lie, i am sad that i suck at sports.  but the fact remains: i suck at sports.  i am glad i have embraced weight lifting and running, these are two things i am not too bad at and i enjoy them both!  track star i am not, but at least i don’t fall flat on my face ;)

meals

after this workout i was tired and hungry.. two things that don’t work well together because i had NO motivation to make anything elaborate for dinner.

we were in luck because our boys agreed to make dinner!  what sweeties, eh?

IMG_9859IMG_9867

the menu: bison burgers, brats and broccoli. how’s that for alliteration?

while they prepped the food, kristen cracked open this unusual veggie that a co-worker had brought from her garden:

IMG_9834

do you know what that is??

IMG_9836

it is a yellow cucumber!

IMG_9838

how crazy is that?! it isn’t even shaped like a cucumber!  but lo and behold, it tastes just like one.

IMG_9837

whoda thought?!

i also snacked on some chips & salsa..IMG_9853 kristen’s mom’s homemade salsa is like crack. sweet & spicy.. and addicting! well, i don’t know if crack is sweet or spicy, but i hear it is pretty addicting.

IMG_9856

bison! lean & delicious.

IMG_9858

the poor pups were chasing cats earlier when they were outside, so they weren’t allowed outside when the grilling action was going on. they cried at the window.

this was so, so good! i love bison. it has 75% less fat and 35% more protein than typical ground beef. count me in.

things are digesting.. and we will probably head home here in a bit. at least the crappy day ended on a delicious note :)

before i go, a few items of business!

  • i picked the random winners of the cheese giveaway by asking marshall, kristen and rory to pick a random number between 1 and 93. the winners are:

congrats to the three winners, please email me your address so i can send you your cheese coupons! mealsandmoves (at) gmail (dot) com

i will be back tomorrow for flashback friday. hopefully i won’t be as grumpy! thanks for putting up with my rant :)

I just had the same cereal realization this morning. I had a bowl and was like, “UGHHHH. I forgot how un-filling this is” especially when you are used to a big bowl of hot oats!

Talia @ Texasgunslinger September 23, 2010 at 9:40 pm

Way to go mixing up your workouts and doing it outside on the bleachers! Sounds like a great workout!

Those bison burgers look SO good! My Hubbs and I tried bison burger patties before and HATED them. Your pics look so good that I think we’ll need to try a different brand because those look t-a-s-t-y!

I’ve tried a starfruit, which was pretty weird to me, but it was good. It’s super cool when you slice it because it’s in the shape of little stars and that’s FUN! I can see myself one day as a mom giving my kids starfruit and actually encouraging them to play with their food:)

Aimee September 23, 2010 at 9:45 pm

Like you, I hated gym. Sports too. I have had a yellow cucumber…I thought I could make some pickles out of them a year or two ago. Turns out they are to soft to do that. So we had bunches of them to eat fresh. After about 20 the rest spoiled. The weirdest vegetables I have eaten are taro (which I know love), tapioca (who knew it was a root veggie? – maybe it is just me in the dark here), and breadfruit – now this is a strange one, but actually really good if baked.

kbwood September 23, 2010 at 9:49 pm

oh man i always remember doing the P. E test in elementary school- i could never do the PULL UPS! haha. SO HARD! Anywayyy I LOVE BISON BURGERS!

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is September 23, 2010 at 10:30 pm

I have been a day ahead all week. It has sucked.

Kerry September 23, 2010 at 11:18 pm

I never even knew yellow cucumber existed! Looks amazing!

edenseats September 23, 2010 at 11:47 pm

me? athletic? ha! never was! I was always having “female issues” during gym….funny how I developed exercise addiction…..anyhow….
I love cucumbers so im dying to try that one! I’ve tried durian, that smell, spikey, asian melon. Yea, not great….I dont recommend it. I dont snub my nose to thing that smell bad (hello, I love broccoli!), but this one is smelly AND fugly!

elise September 23, 2010 at 11:57 pm

nothing quite as lovely as a gorgeously sliced avo. except a track running photo :)

Heather September 24, 2010 at 12:25 am

I recently tried a Black Mission fig…not for me! A little too tart. Guess I was expecting the sweeter kind of taste that you get from dried Turkish figs. Oh well, I’ll try anything once! Last year I roasted up some “new to me” root veggies: turnips, parsnips, and rutabaga. yum.yum.YUM! Although the young girl at the register looked at me really funny and kept asking me what everything was! Lol

I absolutely love Bison! Your burgers looked so good I may just have to go get some bison for grilling this weekend!

I hated gym class in school. I’ve NEVER been a very coordinated person and therefore have no luck whatsoever in organized sports! Your workout looked great! Love the mash up of the run and the bleachers!

Erica September 24, 2010 at 4:33 am

thank goodness its Friday! I’m with you on work being a little much this week. Cereal is delicious but totally doesn’t fill me up either. What a fabulous workout. Love that you two did it together- its nice to have some additional motivation. And the dinner looks great. The puppers are so darn cute. &avocado on top of a burger is fab.

1. did you like gym class when you were in grade school? were you involved in any sports? I did enjoy gym. Sports wise, I swam and played soccer growing up. In hs, I played soccer and was a cheerleader

2. have you tried a yellow cucumber? what is the strangest fruit/veggie you have tried? NO! But now I want one. We had some strange fruits in Jamaica …I still don’t even know what they were!

lindsay September 24, 2010 at 4:45 am

that lunch looks good to me! They’re jealous of the wonderful combo. hehe!
I gotta find that cucumber. I am a huge cucumber fan! Where did you get it?

Have a wonderful weekend, you derserve some R&R!!

Lauren September 24, 2010 at 4:58 am

Awwww, it’s so nice to have a cutie to stare at all day at work. Although, Toly’s pic was replaced recently with my new little nephew love. ;) So much cuter! ;)

Great track workout. I use to HATE gym class but now I think I would love it. Weird. ;)

Lily @ Lily's Health Pad September 24, 2010 at 5:19 am

Dragon Fruit is probably the most exotic fruit I’ve tried. I became athletic in high school. Before that I was NOT very sporty. I hated when we’d do presidential fitness test day. I could hold the flexed arm hang for zero- yes, zero, seconds.

Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) September 24, 2010 at 5:42 am

How nice of your boys to make you dinner! I LOVE bison.

I was not a fan of gym in school. Except for floor hockey, which was always fun. Other than that, nope. Not at all. I’m a solo-event girl [running, karate…]

I have not tried yellow cucumbers!! Let’s see…. I’ve tried purple cauliflower. And passion fruit, which was only weird because I had NO idea how to open it :P

MelissaNibbles September 24, 2010 at 5:57 am

I hated gym class. I got out of it by doing baton twirling during that period.

Tina September 24, 2010 at 5:58 am

I hate weeks like that!!! Yay for Friday.

I love track workouts. They are so fun and such a challenge.

inmytummy September 24, 2010 at 6:02 am

I also suck at sports involving balls. Although, I did play rugby in college and kickball for a while a few years ago. I was not good at either.

Shari September 24, 2010 at 6:02 am

How about a recipe for kristen’s mom’s homemade salsa, I love me a good salsa!!!

Di September 24, 2010 at 6:37 am

That workout looks killer! I’m impressed.

I hated gym class in high schol, but I played 2 years of basketball (being short and slow got me cut junior year) and 2 years of tennis (which I took up in the spring after I got cut from basketball). I wasn’t by any means phenomenal at either, but I love love tennis and want to start playing again.

I need to start making homemade salsa.

Di September 24, 2010 at 6:37 am

Yes, um, high SCHOOL. I’m not sure what high schol is…

Annie September 24, 2010 at 6:48 am

I was never very good at gym or sports. Yet somehow in high school, I took a gym class almost every semester (way more than was required) and played soccer.

I hope work crap calms down!

Freckled Foodie September 24, 2010 at 7:05 am

YUM! where can I find bison meat?! did you get yours at the grocery store?

love the cute shadow picture at the bleachers :)

gym class was probably my FAVORITE. that and art. i hated math and reading :) come to think of it, not much has changed! ha.

i’ve never tried a yellow cucumber, but i def. wouldn’t be opposed! i love trying new-to-me things. the neatest thing i’ve ever tried, i’d have to say was a starfruit…either that or straight up coconut milk! i had a luau for my 16th bday party and my dad drilled holes in real ones for me :)

Jamie September 24, 2010 at 7:21 am

Those burgers (cheese in particular) look awesome. And it’s 9:20 in the morning. I love the pic of the dogs at the window. So what is that yellow veggie in the veggie mix? A yellow carrot? Fancy!

Hope today is bright! This week has been a long one…

thedelicateplace September 24, 2010 at 7:32 am

i have never seen a yellow cuke before! my coworkers judge my lunch like a circus freak show too no worries! i love bison!!! i loved gym class in high school, i was one of those people who wanted to be sweaty! strangest fruit i’ve had was either durian or lychee

Mary September 24, 2010 at 7:53 am

Haha! My sister and I always say we can’t do ball sports. And then we crack up at what we just said…but seriously, if a sport involves a ball, I am terrible at it (including ping pong and foosball if those are sports)

Jessica September 24, 2010 at 7:58 am

that burger looks awesome!!! i always contemplate buying some bison, maybe i should give it a go : )

Katie September 24, 2010 at 8:25 am

Yum! I grew up in colorado and have always lllloved a good buffalo burger, now I live in Boston and *shocker* have yet to find anywhere that sells/serves it. Jealous!

Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) September 24, 2010 at 8:51 am

If I’m going to have a bowl of cereal, I always love putting a scoop of pb in it. So much staying power!

I really hated gym class when I was growing up, but I loooved playing sports. Was a swimmer and a waterpolo player :)

I have never tried a yellow cucumber, but I so would!!

Teri [a foodie stays fit] September 24, 2010 at 8:55 am

I usually hate cottage cheese, but your pictures of it on crackers actually looks really good right now.

I love running stairs and doing track work – I haven’t done it in forever. Perhaps I need to change that!

I loved gym class growing up, but never played any sports. Unless you count cheerleading. I don’t. :)

Nicole C. September 24, 2010 at 9:00 am

1. Yes I loved gym class! Well, the actual class in high school was taught by our 1 billion pound teacher who sat and ate chips, ironic huh! So I took weight training instead and I liked that much better. Grad school PE was so much fun for me! I was kickball nerd. I played tennis all for 4 of high school. The main reason I stayed at the private school I went to was to be on a good team. We won 3 State championships in a row, holla! I should probably take tennis up again..

2. Strangest veggie ever tried, broccoli..that says a lot for a girl who doesn’t eat veggies.

Side note: another thing we have in common, the #22. It’s been a ‘family number’ since I was born, all of our phone numbers had a 22 in it and all our license plates have been 222, mine is still to this day 222…

Holly September 24, 2010 at 9:25 am

that track workout looked like so much fun – i need to grab a friend and do this!

and holly <3's bison, for the record. i blame susan and our canadian adventure.

Tamizn September 24, 2010 at 9:37 am

I actually hated sport at school so its pretty crazy that I have just qualified as a PT! Never tried a yellow cucumber but it looks good! x x

julie September 24, 2010 at 9:42 am

reasons why i hate tuesdays: “do you ever have those weeks where you wake up on tuesday and swear it has to be friday.. but it is only tuesday.. and then the rest of the week proceeds to drag on like there is no tomorrow? well that is me this week. and i am really hoping there is a tomorrow.. because that would mean that it would be friday. and that’s just what i need.”

i played vball all my life :) in college too! and the thing is is that as much a part of my life it was i don’t even miss it a bit and i haven’t played in over a year! weird.

lowandbhold September 24, 2010 at 9:45 am

I was sooo unathletic in HS. I played volleyball, golf and ran track but I sucked at all of it. That workout you did looks way intense. Color me impressed.

My Chinese coworkers bring in so much cool produce. There have been fresh dates, starfruit, seaweed and the list goes on. Currently I have some kiwiberries in the fridge at home that I’m excited to try.

Lara (Thinspired) September 24, 2010 at 10:36 am

Dude, yes. This week went by so slow.
LOVE the desk pic of Marshall. It’s such a great desk picture because it’s primarily of him but you’re there in the background…just love it!
I HATED all sports in high school, but now I love going back to my old high school track and running a few miles!

Lisa September 24, 2010 at 11:29 am

What a great track workout! I used to do that (when I could run) because there’s a track next to our house. Running high stadium stairs are KILLER!

studentofhealthyliving September 24, 2010 at 11:45 am

Can I just say ditto on the whole sports thing. You inspired me to discuss this briefly on my own blog today. Love working out, cardio, and lifting weights. HATE sports, correction I am not coordinated enough to be able to participate or enjoy participating in any type of sports. I kicked butt at dancing and lifting a person into a stunt. As make to make a shot, I have higher chances of making it by doing a potty shot then doing it “normal”. I have zero hand eye coordination.
I hate weeks where you know it is going to be a crappy week and drag on forever. Each minute ticks by so slowly! And those are the days when people at work choose to be the most annoying! Just saying :)
Hope you have a great weekend and it makes up for the craziness at work! :)

Danica September 24, 2010 at 3:40 pm

OMG – that is SO my week, hence, blog reading right now waiting for the clock – tick, tock ;)

I think the official name of the yellow cucumbers is a lemon cucumber and supposedly they taste like lemon, but, I never think they do LOL.

Ummmm, I so need to have Jay read this post so he can “learn” to whip up some deliciousness like your men did :D

Stadium steps – ugh, there is one thing I will NEVER miss – too many in high school and college while playing softball :)

Naomi(onefitfoodie) September 24, 2010 at 7:01 pm

i LOVE that you took your workout to the track! I did that alot this past summer and it was amazing!! I think I got some funny looks from people becuase I wasn’t just running in circles around the track, I was doing insanity type stuff, sprints, high knees, work on the benches it was SO fun and a killer workout!! I hope to squeeze a few more in here before we get the gross New England weather!!

that yellow cuke looks so good!!! i love heirloom and crazy fruit.veggies like that!

love you!

Marlow September 24, 2010 at 7:51 pm

I knew it! You do run so fast that you fly! :)

hayleycepeda September 24, 2010 at 8:18 pm

I always find your odd food combinations (the cottage cheese/sweet potato/veggies/ketchup) to look the tastiest – usually whenever I try something you put on your blog I’m pleasantly surprised! Your pictures always make everything look super tasty, too.

It’s been a while since I worked out on a track or did bleachers stuff – I miss it!! I was always a big fan of PE in school – I loved the opportunity to be outside and run around (at least when I lived in CA..in TX we actually did PE in a gym).

Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) September 25, 2010 at 7:30 am

Twinsies with our track&field workout- I ran around the track too but failed to mention it in my post. I was so proud of myself for making it all the way around without stopping- I am NOT a runner. Not an athlete of any kind- esp. not in school. Now I just hit the weights and do gym classes and whatever floats my boat but I’m not great in sports period! Your workout looked super fun!!!

CUUUTE photo of you two- love that you are lurking in the background :-D hee hee. Naw, just looking on lovingly. Adorable.

Never tried a yellow cuke. Weird: dragon fruit. Yummy but weird. And pretty.

BISON- I’m jealous- I have had it when I was in Canada (the place in which you are a criminal) but never here- can’t get it at my local stores and I’m sure it’s expensive at Whole Foods if it’s even available.

Sounds like you’ve been having it tough at work etc- I’m sorry! :-( HugS!

Carbzilla September 26, 2010 at 9:35 am

I love how Marshall cuts the avocado in his hand just like I do. It makes my husband sooo nervous, but, c’mon, I’ve only cut myself once!

actorsdiet September 26, 2010 at 10:19 am

just seeing a PICTURE of a track gave me hives just now. i was always the last one to finish the mile run – from JHS all the way to senior year – so traumatizing!

Jenny September 28, 2010 at 1:56 pm

I liked gym growing up, but I was an athlete. I ran track, played softball, volleyball and basketball. But my all time favorite was SOCCER. Now a days I still play softball and occasionally indoor soccer, but my favorite is SNOWBOARDING!!! We should ride this year?!?

Those bison burgers look great! I have been craving a garlic burger so maybe I’ll give those a try this week!

I took a business trip to Asia this summer and have the BEST fruit. I have not idea what it was. We were visiting one of our factories (I work for a Ski company) and the cut of this fruit for our meeting. I look liked a pealed apple, had the crunch of an apple but the texture of a pear. It was sweet but with a slightly salty taste ( I don’t know if they salted it to keep it from going brown with apples). I asked if it was an apple and they said no. They told me what it was, but I couldn’t understand them. They ended by saying it was a fruit. You prob would have loved it, since we share a love for apples.
