in meals

hello, friends! i know this is a late post for me.. but marshall is  out with his friends and i don’t like going to sleep without him. plus our cable is on the fritz. and i am trying to avoid the cookies.

so, blogging it is!

i went out to eat twice today, for lunch and for dinner.  one new-to-me location and one of my old favorites.  let’s be honest, i am just glad i finally have something other than cookies and cereal to blog about ;)

lunch was at the robin’s nest.  i know, emily, i am sorry that i went without you! but i will be going back, not to worry.

the robin’s nest is a little sandwich shop on main street downtown.  it is as cute as can be, i wish i had taken a photo from the outside. i love main street. in fact, we passed the robin’s nest while we were downtown taking our wedding photos! which, by the way, i STILL haven’t picked up. am i the worst bride ever? pretty sure you shouldn’t answer that.

i pulled this one from their website:

my lunch date was the notorious momma b! IMG_1625

she’s gorgeous. she should be a sandwich model.

i ordered “The Gobbler”: “Year-Round Reason to be Thankful! Roasted Turkey Breast, Melted Provolone, Lettuce, Avocado, mayo and Robin’s Homemade Cranberry Spread on Ciabatta honey whole wheat.”

as well as a side salad: “The Papa”: Assorted Spring Greens, Artichoke Hearts, Tomatoes, Black Olives, Sweet Red Onions, Marinated Mushrooms w/Balsamic Vinaigrette”

it should be known that they messed up the order and my mom’s sandwich is in the photo above, next to my salad. and my sandwich was next to her salad. but we eventually worked it out. after i snagged a bite of HER sandwich, of course.

my sandwich was fantastic. between the avocado and cranberry sauce, i didn’t even miss the mayo! in fact, i think mayo would have ruined it.

my salad was good, nothing to write home about. i did love the marinated mushrooms. they were hiding under the tomato.

my mom ordered “the Oinkity Doink”: “As Yummy as the Nephew it’s Named After!! Black Forest Ham, Tomato, Swiss, Mayo, Lettuce & Honey Dijon on Honey Wheat

she told the employee that she was ordering it based solely on the name of the sandwich and how fun it was to say. ha!

she also got a side salad, “The Nutty Flora”: Assorted Spring Greens, Sweet Red Grapes, Red Onion, Smoked Gouda, Candied Walnuts w/Cherry Vinaigrette”

the sandwich was delicious and my mom raved about it. she is not a big sandwich person but she said she would definitely be back for this one!

her salad was awesome. the candied walnuts were great and the dressing really was the best part. it had almond extract in there along with cherry flavor. SO good.

the robin’s nest was delicious and also had a fun, cute environment.

IMG_1630 IMG_1627

we will be back!

dinner was, as i said above, an old favorite. marshall was feeling mexican and so we headed to one of the best mexican joints in all of utah.

the red iguana.  if you are ever in utah and you like mexican, you HAVE to go here.

i had skipped my afternoon snack and so by the time we got a table i was hangry. i devoured nearly a whole basket of delicious chips & salsa. they’re like crack, i tell you.

their salsa is spicy so i washed it down with a LOT of agua.

i ordered the chicken tacos which were served on corn tortillas with lettuce, tomatoes & olives.  the chicken was marinated in tomato salsa. it came with black beans and an (unpictured) side of guac!

one thing i have learned from personal food blogging experience and from reading other food blogs.. mexican food photos NEVER do the food justice. it always looks like a big, blurry mess on a plate. don’t you agree?

but seriously, you guys, these tacos were PHENOMENAL. i usually get the enchiladas.. but tonight, tacos were a GREAT choice.

IMG_1640 IMG_1639

after dinner i came home and marshall left to hang with his friends.  my parents came over to visit with me because my dad just got back in town from a week-long catch & release fly fishing trip.

they helped re-arrange the furniture in the living room and we took some measurements for a rug and coffee table. once the room is done, i will be sure to post before and afters.

they stayed pretty late, so i didn’t end up doing anything tonight.  i know.. friday night and home alone? oh well, i guess that is part of being old and married ;)

before i go, i want to take a more serious turn and tell you guys thanks again for your concern about me and my situation.  each comment has made my heart grow and your positive vibes are felt from all directions.  and guess what? prayers work.  i can’t go into detail, but let’s just say that what happened was going to be a permanent, life long problem for me and my family. thanks to many, many prayers (at least that is what i believe), something has happened that will eventually allow things to get better and for the issues to heal.  while they aren’t all better yet, (it’s complicated), there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it gives me hope.  i know it sounds indirect and confusing.. but i couldn’t go without thanking you all for your positive affirmations and prayers. i truly believe it has helped remedy the situation. so thank you. so much :)

well, enough sap out of me! i have big plans tomorrow: farmers’ market, a birthday party for the cutest one year old around, and i am learning how to bake my very first red waldorf (red velvet) cake! i am so excited.

momma b’s birthday is on monday so we will be celebrating with the family on sunday. i am in charge of cooking.. so of course you can look forward to that menu.

oh, and hey, i might even lift some weights sometime this weekend! shocking, i know. but i am going through lifting withdrawals!

ONE LAST THING: as of today, i have made the decision to attend the 2nd annual foodbuzz festival! i wasn’t sure i could swing it due to $$$, but i have decided that it is TOTALLY worth it. i had so much fun last year! so now i want to know: who is going to be there?!?

1. what was the last meal you ate in a restaurant? did you love it enough to order again? i am glad i tried a new dish at the red iguana! i had never had the tacos before. i will for sure order them again.. they were great.

2. do you like mayo? what about miracle whip? blech, i HATE miracle whip. but i don’t mind mayo. if it is in something, i will eat it. but i typically leave it off of things. i would rather get hot and heavy with the mustard ;) which is ironic, because as a child, i was a mayo fiend and hated mustard!

I’m glad you’re feeling somewhat better about your situation. All your friends in blogland are here for you!

My last restaurant meal was a vegetarian plate at a Cuban restaurant. I didn’t really like it and I was scared that it secretly had meat in it.

No on the mayo! Bleh.

lindsay September 11, 2010 at 4:29 am

not a mayo person either. We have aplace in Texas called the IGuana Grill, right up the road from us. Taco are soo good too but I have to be honest and say that their presentation doesn’t do it justice. Just like you said!
Prayers, yes Prayers, are with you and your situation. Glad to know that you have an amzing family and husband to support you as well.

Lauren September 11, 2010 at 4:51 am

We have a similar sandwich shop here called “Isaacs” and all of the sandwich names are named after birds. I always get “THe Gooney Bird” mostly because I love the name so much. Your mama is just as cute as can be! :) Such a great lunch date.

Oh girl, I really do love you more than anything and I know that whatever you are going through, you will prevail. You are so strong and grounded and your life is truly an inspiration. Just know that when we are faced with the unthinkable, it doesn’t mean we have to think of life as unbearable. Your family is so strong and you guys will get through this together!!

Love you always and forever!

1970kikiproject September 11, 2010 at 4:55 am

so glad to hear your personal situation has taken a positive turn, janetha! thanks for sharing that news. i agree: prayer and positive vibes of support are awesome!!
mayo? no thanks! but i love mustards!!!
enjoy your cake baking!!!

April September 11, 2010 at 5:17 am

I miss my mommy :( I can tell you and your mom have the kind of relationship that my mom and I have. Don’t you wish you could stay 10 and live the rest of your life with her :)

I had an ahi tuna salad at Wolfies and I LOVE it!!!

I like Miracle Whip, Mike likes hardcore mayonnaise. We settled for Fat Free Mayo. Of course I don’t eat it anymore ;)

Sometimes you just have to forget about the $$$ thing and enjoy life :) I wish I was going…i’m not a member of Foodbuzz though.

Katie September 11, 2010 at 5:44 am

Salsa and chips are crack for real!!!!!!!!!!

Everything looks delish! Love the lunch and dinner out!!!!

Happy Birthday to Momma B on Monday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im sure you will be making a yummy menu!

Im glad things are better for you, tough times are hard, but its life and we get through them : ) glad its getting better and there is light at the end of the tunnel!

balancejoyanddelicias September 11, 2010 at 5:48 am

I’m relieved to know that you’re feeling better and there’s hope things get better! I’ll pray for you!
I don’t like mayo, I prefer mustard or ketchup. I think avocado is pretty good sandwich spread!
have a nice weekend!!!

Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) September 11, 2010 at 6:04 am

Those are two super cute, and delicious looking restaurants! Love it.

Ahhh I wish I was going to Foodbuzz! I wanted to go, but I don’t think I can swing it this year :(

Last thing I ate in a restaurant? Gnocchi gorgonzola. Ahhhmazing. I’d order it again.

I actually used to HATE mayo, and miracle whip. Now I’m ok with a little of the real stuff. But no miracle whip. Yuck.

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is September 11, 2010 at 6:09 am

We just ate in a restaurant last night and shared pizza and salad… does that count? :) It was really good!

MelissaNibbles September 11, 2010 at 6:33 am

I’ll eat anywhere with “and such” in the title. That made me laugh for some reason.
I’m going out to eat tonight! If you call drinking vodka eating that is.

thedelicateplace September 11, 2010 at 7:08 am

so glad things are taking a turn for the better, i was worried! mama is beauty for sure! i love the decor in the robin’s nest. have fun at foodbuzz! last night i ate at a place called santa fe cafe and had a spinach, bacon, avocado, egg salad & ceviche with scallops/shrimp. i wish they gave me more instead of a tiny cup so good! nate had QUAIL! it was like a chicken on roids in terms of taste, i liked it!

Amanda @ Vegacious September 11, 2010 at 7:52 am

I am NOT a mayo person either – and never have been. I like to slather on the mustard though. :) Although I haven’t tried vegenaise since becoming vegan – but I can’t say I want to try it either.

Heather (Where's the Beach) September 11, 2010 at 7:52 am

That salad sounds like it should have been the bomb. I think the last thing I ate out was pizza. I don’t eat out often as there aren’t many places here that offer anything for vegetarians that is worth paying for. So glad to hear that there is a light at the end of the tunnel for you. And happy bday to Momma b!!!

Erica September 11, 2010 at 8:21 am

Great meals out- yum yum yum! Love good Mexican- the beans look fabulous. Your Mom is TOTALLY adorable- Happy early Birthday to her!! Glad to hear things are going better. Yayyyy.

1. what was the last meal you ate in a restaurant? hehe…a parfait….you know I’d order that pup again and again

2. do you like mayo? what about miracle whip? neither!

homecookedem September 11, 2010 at 8:32 am

Glad to hear your situation is getting better. I was worried about you.

That mexican meal looks awesome. Mexican is my favorite thing to eat out!! I went out for chips and salsa with friends yesterday for happy hour. Ate way too many, but they are just sooooooo good!! :)

I actually prefer miracle whip! My mom and grandma both always use it in the kitchen so I guess it’s b/c that’s what I’m used to.

julie September 11, 2010 at 9:15 am

mmmm you make my heart smile :) and your mama does too! tell her julie (from the blogging world obvi) thinks she looks GORGEOUS in that photo!

um i hate mayo. gew like double gew i think it’s the smell that i hate the worst and also the scene from never been kissed when he eats the whole bucket of coleslaw?

i had whole foods hot bar last night and WENT TO TOWN on that shit. it was glorious and i loved every minute. deej was my hot date

actorsdiet September 11, 2010 at 9:43 am

i’m planning on going to foodbuzz this year too. WE GOTS TO HANG.

Tamizn September 11, 2010 at 10:54 am

The last meal I ate was breakfast brunch today it was greasy hangover food just what the doctor ordered!

I love mayo with tuna and also chips x x

Abby September 11, 2010 at 11:06 am

It’s none of our business, but my heart got a little happier hearing that whatever it is isn’t quite as upsetting as it was for you a couple of days ago. Yay!

As for mayo, gross me out. Actually, I don’t like anything globby like that–mayo, sour cream, etc.–but I love plain Greek yogurt. I have no idea why. Anyway, I like to actually taste the main ingredients in my food and think too many condiments just messes things up and hides the flavor.

Happy Early Birthday Mama B!!! You look 35, I swear, but that would imply that you were a promiscuous child and had Janetha in elementary school. Not my intent ;)

Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) September 11, 2010 at 11:30 am

Yay for Foodbuzz! Andy and I have definite plans to be there. It was so fun last year.

I’m glad your situation has a light at the end of the tunnel. Hope, love and prayers do work! I hope everything works out. <3

I would totally dig that sandwich place. YUM!

Tina September 11, 2010 at 1:06 pm

That sandwich shop looks delicious. I want that salad. :D

SO happy to hear that things seem to be looking up for whatever the situation may be. I’ll keep on saying prayers though. I believe they do miracles too. :)

Andrea September 11, 2010 at 2:19 pm

I love a good deli sandwhich. I am so very happy to hear that things are looking up for you!!!

Mindy September 11, 2010 at 3:34 pm

Hey Janetha,

Nice post- you’re making me crave either a really good sandwich or Mexican food. I hope whatever you’re dealing with works out for the best. I’m sending kind thoughts your way.

Caitlin September 11, 2010 at 5:12 pm

Just wanted to say I’m really glad to hear things are looking up for you. The power of positive thinking is huge :) Enjoy your weekend!

Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) September 11, 2010 at 5:31 pm

“she’s gorgeous. she should be a sandwich model.”–BEFORE i even read that, i thought that your mom is truly a stunner! I mean, she raised all you girls, and i know you were all saints and gave her no gray hairs :) and she looks amazing. And WHAT a class act w/ the perfect red nails. Tell her I want to be a mom like her! I told her/you that once, that I hope my bond w/ Skylar is like yours and Mamma B’s!– And happy 21st birthday to her tomorrow :)

Foodbuzz…girl. I want to go but I have some fears. I know you have your own stuff going on but I can write to you more about it. I would love!! to meet you and be there!

Mexi food, yes, and much of RAW food always looks awful on camera. Yours doesnt, but mine does!

Your issues and things…SO HAPPY for you that it’s working out!!!!! Amen :)

Shannon September 11, 2010 at 7:34 pm

oh no, i’m late to the party, but i’ll still send some thoughts to you and your family!! sounds like you’ve got some good family time coming up, and that will help too :) enjoy the cooking!

Amanda September 11, 2010 at 9:11 pm

I tried Red Iguana for the first time last October. It is sooo good. A few months after that I purposely missed my flight home because I had a connection in Salt Lake City and I wanted to eat at Red Iguana THAT badly. I got a hotel and everything and didn’t get home ’til the next day. Ha. (OK, so there were also other reasons, but let’s be honest, that HUGELY swayed the decision…). Yum!

1. I went to a build-your-own-stirfry type place. I had shrimp/calamari/fish/tofu/lots of veggies/curry seasoning/red curry peanut sauce over udon noodles. Um. YES I would order it again. It was gooood.

2. I don’t care for mayo much either. I like it more than I used to, but I still don’t ever order it (in fact, 9.9 times/10 I still purposely ask for it to be left off). I’ve only tried miracle whip a few times, but pretty sure I hate it. Too sweet. I’m a mustard whore too.

Glad things are looking up for you and your fam, always a relief.

runningaroundnormal September 11, 2010 at 9:44 pm

Glad things may be looking up for you sweetie!
I agree – Mexican food never looks good in photos as it tastes! I trust ya though ;)

BroccoliHut September 11, 2010 at 10:23 pm

1. Last meal I ate out was this evening–a “tofu tater salad”. Basically scrambled tofu with oven roasted potatoes on a bed of greens. The tofu was actually pretty flavorless but I loved the potatoes!
2. I’ve actually never really liked regular mayo, but I love vegan mayo–is that weird?

GetHealthyWithHeather September 12, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Clam chowder in a bread bowl was my last restaurant meal. We go to the same place every beach trip for it… Delish!

Heather September 12, 2010 at 12:28 pm

This is my first comment! I have finally decided to stop lurking and start my own blog. Check it out

My last restaurant visit was to Ulla in Victoria BC. I had corn and mushroom chowder with bacon. It was tasty but too sweet. I would not order it again.

simplyshaka September 12, 2010 at 12:45 pm

You and your mom are so cute-damn you both of your good genes :)

I’ve never heard of red velvet cake referred to as red waldorf cake-interesting.

I so wish I could swing the money to go to the FoodBuzz fest but just cant do it–next yr fo sho!

Happy Sunday!

Rachael September 12, 2010 at 7:43 pm

Utah nostalgia – I love the Red Iguana – I’ve eaten down many a bowl of chips there!
Mexican food lends further weight to the adage of never judging a book by its cover :)
Not sure about Foodbuzz.. I’ve been on the road so much this year, but it would be a nice way to bond with other blogging noobs and vets!

Julia September 12, 2010 at 10:26 pm

It’s so good to hear that things have gotten better, and I’ll continue thinking and praying that they get better and that things heal.
On a happier note I’m soo excited that you are going to Foodbuzz, because I would <3 <3 <3 to get to meet you in person! I'm planning on going, just trying to figure out where to stay and such.

1. The last meal I ate at a restaurant was at the SLC Airport, Dick Clark's American Bandstand Grill; good artichoke dip, bland sandwiches – wouldn't order them again or even go to that restaurant again.
2. I prefer Miracle Whip to mayonaise – I grew up eating the fat free stuff. I don't eat much of either now, I prefer mustard, either dijon or honey.

Mary (A Merry Life) September 13, 2010 at 4:23 am

1. what was the last meal you ate in a restaurant? did you love it enough to order again? a mandarin and sesame chicken salad at wagamama’s. Soooo good! I would definitely eat it again.
2. do you like mayo? what about miracle whip? i hate miracle whip soooo much. But I like mayo when it’s used with something else like mustard or ketchup. :)

lowandbhold September 13, 2010 at 6:27 am

Both restaurants look fab! I had Mexican Saturday night and tore up the chip basket as well.

I had a taco salad that was just meh, it was sad because I had forgotten how much I like their chicken enchiladas and should have ordered those. Boo.

I enjoy both mayo and miracle whip in different situations. Currently I have some mayo in the fridge, but haven’t used it since I made the recipe I bought it for. I have to be in a certain place for mayo and mayo-like products I think.

So glad the situation is improving. You’ll still be in my thoughts and prayers!

I MIGHT be at Foodbuzz – just waiting on them to drop the info so I can really assess the situation. Would be FABULOUS to meet you!

Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine September 13, 2010 at 6:32 am

I’m almost positive I’m going to Foodbuzz!! Ahh I can’t wait to meet you there- I just hope I can find a cheap ticket/roomie!!

That sandwich place sounds awesome. And mexican too? Girl, you ate like a queen this weekend. Love it.

Mayo is gross. I haven’t been able to eat it since I saw my mom make the homemade kind….the texture gets to me.

Hope you have a great start to your week!

Naomi(onefitfoodie) September 13, 2010 at 8:29 am

im so glad you are feeling better. We are always here for you :) if you need to ‘talk’ you can always email me as well :)

that mexican place looks awesome!!! i went to lunch with Jason on saturday to one of our favoritre places and I get the same thing. everytime. yeah its one of THOSE places! i love it though!!!

BLEH i hate mayo!!!

emily September 13, 2010 at 9:56 am

i’m glad to hear that things are looking up!

1. A new, locally-owned, mexican joint in town called ‘super burrito’. The menu looked lame, the location slightly pathetic, the furniture 1980’s pink vinyl….. all indications that the food would be TERRIFIC!!!!! We noshed on their homemade spicy pickled veggies (carrot/onion/jalepeno) while we waited for lunch. But lemme tell ya – nada is better (for relieving my guity conscience) than carrot chips instead of corn chips before a meal ;D Anywhoo the food was great! I wish you were here in Oregon to try it (and oh yeah, we had pita pit the day before – now i’m just gloating….)
2. i hate em both!

Angharad September 13, 2010 at 10:56 am

Ahh home alone on a Friday. I know that business :)

1) Hmm I ate out a lot this weekend. the last time was mercado central (mexican market in mpls) and I ate two tacos al pastor and yesyesyesyes I would eat them again in a heartbeat! So good.

2) I like mayo but I don’t love it. Could definitely live without it. I prefer hummus on sandwiches!

Nicole G September 13, 2010 at 11:08 am

Hmmm…last thing at a restaurant…I had a french dip sandwich with pepper jack cheese and sweet potato fries. The fries were awesome…the sandwich…eh, nothing special and overpriced. And I love mayo, unfortunately. Wish I didn’t since it’s so darn fattening. I hate Miracle Whip! My husband loves it. But he calls it mayo ;)

I hope all continues to get better for you! We love ya, and don’t even know ya ;) Really though, thoughts and prayers to you!

Good luck on baking your first cake! You will be fine! Love red velvet and remember, it doesn’t matter what it looks like, just how it tastes!

Lauren September 13, 2010 at 7:39 pm

So awesome to hear that you’re feeling hopeful and encouraged. God really does hear every single thing we ask and we might not always get exactly what we want when we want it (I know this from personal experience :)) but I truly, truly believe He always knows what is best. Love your sweet momma’s glowing smile-happy happy birthday to her!!!
