happy birthday, penelope jane!

by Janetha on August 18, 2010

in meals

on august 18, 2008, the best little bean was born. (yes, i love the synchronicity of her birthday, 8-18-8.. in case you wondered.)

10-21-08 005

on october 21, 2008, we picked her up from the airport.

10-21-08 028

for me, it was love at first sight.

10-21-08 026

for marshall, it was love at first sight.

 10-21-08 025

even for randy dog, it was love at first sight.

10-21-08 038

today is penny’s birthday! she is two.

for her first birthday, i made pupcakes. you can see the post about that here.

8-18-09 051

this year, i baked her a cake.

cheesy birthday cake for your pup.

an original recipe by janetha g.

  • 1.5 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • enough milk to make “batter” consistency—i used skim milk

place all ingredients in a bowl. mix well.

you will have spectators.

pour into a greased 8” cake pan.

bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. when it is done, it should be golden brown and a toothpick should come out clean after inserting into the middle of the cake.

while the cake bakes, take an obscene amount of photos of the birthday girl. and of her brother, we wouldn’t want to leave anyone out.

IMG_0300 IMG_0313 IMG_0317 IMG_0326

once the cake has cooled a bit, place it on a plate.

spread a nice layer of natural peanut butter on top.

crunchy, if you want to make your pooch happiest.

adorn the cake with a “P” (or the appropriate letter) made of cheese.

sing to the birthday girl, while teasing her with the delicious cake.

let them eat cake!

randy looks like he is a little deprived here, doesn’t he?

pretty sure he was drooling.

poor randy dog, so picked on.

don’t be fooled. he ate his fair share of cake.

this was by far the best dog cake i have made!

i usually follow recipes, but this time i made up my own.  marshall and i tasted it and agreed it was the best yet. it had a great, soft consistency and didn’t taste like cardboard. double score.

in honor of penelope’s birthday, i am giving away this cool organic dog treat cookbook/cookie cutter set! i snagged one for the birthday girl and decided to give one away to one of my dog-lovin’ readers.

Happy Birthday Penelope!

I have a tricolored corgi name Coaster. He’s awesome. My favorite thing about him is sometimes he just sits and smiles. Just smiles. At nothing. It’s awesome and you just can’t help but start smiling too. He’s my little joybug.

Luv all the dog pics!

Maddie August 19, 2010 at 9:00 am

i’m such a sucker for doggies on food and fitness blogs – my favorite things in one place!!

i’ve actually emailed you a pic of my poochie when i was asking for tips about BFL. his name is elvis huxtable benavidez and he is the most adorable overweight english bulldog that you’d ever know! the thing i love the most about elvis is his uncanny ability to make me smile on my way up the stairs when i get home from work. he does his best to wiggle his corkscrew tail and gives me air-fives as he waits for me to get up to him [after all…he’s overweight and avoids actually using the stairs if possible]. he is also an all-star soccer player. weird!

poor 75-lb guy is on RX dog diet food. he’s got 10 pounds to go!

This was such a great post! Happy birthday Penelope! She’s such a cutie!

We have two dogs… lady and Scooter. Lady is a long-haired chihuahua and mini dobermin pincher… Scooter is half jack russel terrier and italian grey hound.

Our dogs are amazing! Scooter is everyone’s best friend from the second they walk through the door. He will kiss everyone to no end for no reason… just because he’s fun loving like that :)

Lady – well, she is my little girl… she sticks to my side! She closes her eyes and looks like she’s smiling when I kiss her! It’s the best thing ever :)

Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather August 19, 2010 at 9:12 am

happy birthday to your little girl!

My dog is Joe and he’s half miniature Italian grey hound and English Shepard. I love that he’s like me and always likes to be warm. Every morning when we get out of bed he jumps up and gets under all the covers. He makes his own cave, it’s too cute.

Teri [a foodie stays fit] August 19, 2010 at 9:21 am

I think my heart just exploded. Penelope = cutest puppy EVER. Holy. I’m even more in love with that dog.

I love your pup b-day cake! Maizey is very excited to try it on October 17. And she said to tell her dawg P.J. “Happy Birthday!”

Um, in case you don’t know, Maizey is my boxer and I’m a little obsessed. I love her squeaky, dramatic, noisy yawns in the mornings. :)

emily August 19, 2010 at 9:37 am

happy birthday penny!
my little american eskimo pup (Rocket Squire) would have loved a slice of that cake! I can’t wait to make the recipe for his 3rd birthday.

julie August 19, 2010 at 9:39 am

how cute are you!! jj would totally be head over heels in love with you for sure

my pup’s a kerin terrier and his name is jay jay and he’s way to overweight for this cookbook haha but he can hear a banana peel from 10,000 miles away and i love that about the little chunk master

Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) August 19, 2010 at 9:39 am

Happy birthday to sweet Penelope!! That cake is just adorable Miss J. What a sweet fur mom you are. I can’t remember what kind of dog you said she was, but I am in love! Well, I’m in love with her and Gina’s Shiba Inu Viesa. I want both! lol …and a yellow lab. My favorite kind of dog of all time. Miss my Casey girl. That first pisture of P in that little tiny crate is the most adorable thing I have ever seen… Melted my heart! Even Brian agreed!

If I had a pup I’d enter *tear*, but alas… I do not. My land lord says no dogs! :(

Maren August 19, 2010 at 9:43 am

She is sooooooo precious Janetha! And your kitchen looks amazing from what I can see of it!! I don’t have a dog, so I am not going to join in the giveaway! Hope you have a good day!

Jessica August 19, 2010 at 9:43 am

Happy Birthday Penelope! She is so cute. I love her little happy face. <3

I have a boxer named Justice. He is my fur baby. My husband & I don't have any kids yet so he is our son. I LOVE him sooo much! I think I have more pictures of him on my cell phone then I do of my husband…oops! I gotta fix that! lol…

Alicia August 19, 2010 at 10:00 am

Happy Birthday (Belated)!

I have a 3 year old golden retriever named Boston. He is the best dog ever!!! One of my favorite things is that when my husband goes out of town for work (weekly at least 1 night) my dear Boston cuddles me, but he puts his head on his daddy’s pillow!!! It’s so cute I almost can’t contain myself.

BTW – You’d love my birthday numbers… 8/2/82

gavrielski August 19, 2010 at 10:34 am

Happy birthday Penny! My pooch is an 11-year-old black standard poodle named Chip. He is the biggest sweetheart in the world, even if he can’t chase a stick to save his life! We call him “piggy on the bed” because he just spreads out over the entire bed and won’t move. This giveaway is so cute!

Morgan August 19, 2010 at 10:35 am

Happy Birthday Ms. Penelope Jane! She is adorable!
I have a miniature schnauzer named Rufio, like from the movie Hook.
I honestly can’t pick one thing I love about him. I guess I’ll go with his wet, sloppy wake up kisses. They always start my day with a smile! My hubby and I fell in love with him the second he chose us. We met the litter, and knew we wanted a boy so we were playing with him and all of his brothers. He marched right up to Solomon, crawled into his lap and rolled over for a belly rub. We were sold right away! He’s just so damn feisty, and we knew his boldness the day we met him meant he was the boy for us!

Casy August 19, 2010 at 10:46 am

Love it!!! Happy Birthday Penelope!! She has to be one of the cutest little pups EVER… but I am madly in love with Randy! Bassetts are my dreams doggies!

Speaking of.. have you seen this? http://thepioneerwoman.com/blog/2010/08/mass-hysteria/

I thought of your doggie the whole time!

My doggie is a mini lab… well technically a Chihuahua, but I don’t like to be one of those blonde chicks with a little dog cliche, so I tell everyone he is a mini lab. EVERYONE BELIEVES ME!
He is a rescue so I think he is about 7? And is named Sailor Jerry.
Like I said, he is a rescue and came with an abusive past and A TON of issues. It took a long time for him to show any kind of happiness.. crazy, right? Now my favorite thing he does is be happy. Wag his tail, play with toys, and give me some puppy kisses.
There is nothing like it!!

kristastes August 19, 2010 at 10:52 am

I have a 17 month old english yellow lab named Stella. I love everything about her, but one of the funniest things she does is her ‘old man’/’drunk sit’ – she has been doing it since she was a pup and I never get sick of laughing at her when she does it. There’s a pic of her doing it in this post haha. http://kristastes.wordpress.com/2010/07/08/stuffed-pigeons/

hamredesign August 19, 2010 at 11:01 am

Aw I think it’s so sweet you bake for your dogs! I have a pit bull/Basenji mix named Sydney. I love how her whole body wiggles when she wags her tail. The more excited she is, the more she wiggles. Guard your breakables!

hundredtenpounds August 19, 2010 at 11:07 am

Oh my gosh! She is the CUTEST puppy!!!!! Why can’t they stay puppies forever? :)

Faith August 19, 2010 at 11:09 am

Awww, what cuties! Look at those eyes!

nee nee August 19, 2010 at 11:15 am

How fun! Happy Birthday Penelope Jane!

I have 2 pups:

Pancheaux (Pancho with a cajun twist – I call him Panch, or Monkey Man) – he’s an 11 year old Shepherd/Hound Mix. He’s the old man of the house and I adore him. He’s been there through a LOT with me!

Jolee (I call her Jo Jo) – she’s a 3 year old Border Collie/Lab mix and she’s CRAZY! So much energy and so loving.

I couldn’t do without either one of them – they make me SO HAPPY!!

runningaroundnormal August 19, 2010 at 11:29 am

Happy birthday Penelope!!! Love her:D And you! She was such a cute puppy and now is a very adorable dog!

Naomi(oneFF) August 19, 2010 at 11:55 am

aww this is the CUTEST post ever!! i love taht :) and love the cheese shape “P” both of your dogs are the best and so adorable. I also love that they love eachother!!

My dog passed away in 2008 and it was the saddest day i can remember in a while. My whole family was so torn up about it, my parents still wont get another dog just yet because of my first pup, Jersey :(

Happy birthday to your baby girl!!!

BroccoliHut August 19, 2010 at 12:52 pm

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who bakes for my dogs! I actually have that exact cookbook/biscuit set at home:)
There are 6 dogs in the Yoder clan–Chester (Golden/Lab mix), Ted (Jack Russell Terrier), Gus, Dixie (both pugs), Greta, and Rainer (both Boxers). Whew.

Jenny August 19, 2010 at 1:27 pm

Happy Birthday Penelope!!!

I have an 11 month old Boston Terrier named Winston. Something fun Zane (my hubby) and I do everday when we get home is play hide and seek with Winston. One of us lets him out of the bathroom and he immediately goes in search of the other who is hiding. It’s adorable and we all love it!

Kelsey August 19, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Happpppy birthday little Penelope!!!!!! Your kitchen is beautiful!!

myFOODevents August 19, 2010 at 2:10 pm

I used to have a little beagle dog named April and now my family has a lab named Britches :)

Monica August 19, 2010 at 2:41 pm

Unfortunately my Dad isn’t a big dog person (crazy, i know), so we have only had one dog in our house, her name was Leela, and she was a mix, even the humane society we adopted her from didn’t know her exact breed, but they believed she was part golden retriever. Why do bloggers have the CUTEST dog pictures ever?!

The Viva la Vida Project August 19, 2010 at 4:05 pm

I knew it was a holiday yesterday, somewhere and for someone, I don’t just wake up feeling so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for no reason. Does I’m curious, does she have a brother/sister I can adopt?! *heart melts* I can’t stop swooning, and you’ve even said yourself they make the perfect I’m-not-ready-for-kids-quite-yet replacement. I’m even considering asking for the whereabouts for the adoption papers for YOU as a friend/roomie/chef after this post, those cakes look like something I’d devour in a second and I’m not even a pup! Yay for birthdays, the cutest dogs in the world and peanut butter cake. All equally, of course.

Tiffany August 19, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Happy Birthday!!!!
I have a friendly, loving Pitbull named Nhova and lazy Queensland Healer named Kalie.

Jacqueline August 19, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Happy Birthday! I have two babies that are malti-poos, Harley (1 yr) and Diesel (2yrs). My husband wanted bigger dogs and I wanted smaller, so we go smaller and gave them big dog names :) But now he wouldn’t have it any other way because they are like little people and even sleep with us every night!

Rachel August 19, 2010 at 5:08 pm

I have a yellow lab/golden retriever cross named Daisy. I love how she always lays next to the stove and watches me while i cook (probably so she is close when i drop food on the floor)

Hallie August 19, 2010 at 5:15 pm

I was not a dog person…until I got one! Now I can’t imagine life without my Nina. My favorite thing is how happy she is to see me when I get home, and how if I’m in a bad mood, she somehow knows to be extra cute and lovey to make me feel better :-)

RedOne August 19, 2010 at 6:28 pm

Maya is a terrier -chihuahua mix and one heck of an adorable one! She is super cute when she carries around her stuffed squeaky ducky and brings it up the stairs (the ducky is bigger than her!)

Lee August 19, 2010 at 6:43 pm

Happy Birthday Penelope Jane.

My dog is a golden retriever and his name is Murphy. I love that he sleeps on his back with his legs in the air. It’s very funny.

Errign August 19, 2010 at 7:40 pm

I have a 4 year old crazy Australian Shepherd puppy McKinley. I love that he catches flies like a little venus fly trap, but I do NOT love his new habit of jumping out the windows of my Jeep when we are moving.

Run Sarah August 19, 2010 at 8:14 pm

My dog is a pomeranian named Captain…I love how he gives the best hugs…ever!

Carla in Sydney August 19, 2010 at 8:27 pm

Happy Bday Beautiful Doggy!! So cute!!! How CUTE was she when she was a puppy??!!! They are still both just as beautiful of course! I have 2 Jack Russells named “Jack” and “Max”. Jack is 4 and Max is 7. The thing I love most about them (and all dogs) is the unconditional love….Dogs never care what you look like, how you act or feel….they just love you 100% of the time. Dogs are the most beautiful creatures in the world and I cannot imagine life without them.

Kristy Wilson August 19, 2010 at 10:04 pm

Happy Birthday to your little girl! I have two Smooth Fox Terriers. Their names are Emmitt and Eve. The one thing I love most about my dogs is they get so excited to see me every time I come home. They act just as excited to see me whether I have been gone 5 minutes or 4 hours.

nic - the auspicious squirrel August 19, 2010 at 10:06 pm

Happy Birthday, Penny!

I make cakes for my dog too! I started out with a recipe from a book, then over the years it progressed into a cake we could all share, mine is banana w/o nuts… my little guy is allergic to nuts.

Great pictures! I’m, of course, partial to the pics of Randy, since I’m a basset lover. ;)

You don’t need to enter me in the contest, but I’ll give the goods on my dog. :)

I have a basset hound, he’s 14 years old… I call him Little-bit on my blog, but his ‘real’ name is… Maxwell House, because when he was a pup he’d wake me up at 4am… for two years! So I named him after coffee… but in most company, he’s just Max. ;)

Lindsay August 19, 2010 at 10:43 pm

I am not allowed to have a dog because my mom is allergic, but my best friends dogs are my favorite things in the world. Her dogs are a Chocolate Lab and a White Lab. They are named Whitney and Chelsea. I love them both and I love the days that we take them for walks. I would love to win the cook book so that I can make them special doggie treats!! :)

Allie (Live Laugh Eat) August 20, 2010 at 1:11 am

OH MY GOODNESS. Two words: Baby Penny. That is all.

Dana August 20, 2010 at 6:55 am

I have a 15 month old yellow lab named Charlie. I love how he likes to run and swim when he has energy and how he likes to cuddle when he’s tired. Pretty much, I love everything about him – can’t imagine what it will be like when I have human kids :)

missy August 20, 2010 at 10:03 am

Sarah Jayne August 20, 2010 at 12:54 pm

OMG I might bookmark this post just for the obscene amount of RIDICULOUSLY CUTE PUPPY pics!!!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!

I am obsessed with my dogs, too- Jules (3 year old husky/shar pei mix) & Jax (1 year old bulldog/staffordshire terrier mix).

I love how Jules talks like a husky (“Jules you want to go outside?” errrrrRRRROWWWrrrrowwwowwwowwwOWWWWW).

I love how Jax can spend literally hours chasing his own tail (Cute? VERY. Smart?? Not so much haha)

Jamie August 20, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Happy birthday to your doggie!

I have a shih tzu/yorkie mix (shorkie if you will, but I don’t like those corny mixed names) named Brutus. He will be 3 in September but I don’t know the exact date :( I love that he is a total mama’s boy :)

Vanessa August 20, 2010 at 3:13 pm

My dogs’ name is Wiggles. He is a Shitzu. He is getting older (14yrs old). However, I love to see the younger side come when we get out his teddy bear he’s had since he was a pup. I love Wiggles and he loves us unconditionally. He’s our friend for life!

homecookedem August 20, 2010 at 3:40 pm

Happy Birthday to a sweet little pup!! :) Thanks for that cake recipe!! I will definitely be making it for my little puppy girl next April 15!! :)

We have 2 dogs: Cooper is a boxer mix and is 9 years old. Ripsey is our baby and she is about 3 and a half. She’s a coonhound and Randy’s adorable face reminds me so much of hers!! :)

Jeannette August 20, 2010 at 5:57 pm

Hi Janetha, Happy birthday to your pup! I love the countertops in your kitchen, what are they made of?

Barbara August 21, 2010 at 10:23 pm

You essentially created the perfect cheese loaf! I would add some dijon to the batter- a few herbs, and call it my new Artisian creation! Happy Birthday to Penny!!!
