early mawnin meal and mover.

hi friends!

first of all i want to say congratufriggnlations to the new mr. & mrs. marshmellow! we all know janetha made the most gorgeously amazingly beautiful bride in the whole world, and she and marsh better have the best honeymoon ever in history of honeymoons!

love you girl!

for those of you that don’t know me, hi! i’m julie from the strong long island based blog julie golean. i’m a grad school going, intern working, type a thang who thrives on a good sweat sesh & maintains a healthy lifestyle after a 60lb weight loss.

….one of my infamous “car commute self portraits…”

something that really helps me stay on track, especially with a schedule that i like to purposely jam pack as to prevent me from actually finding room to breathe, is working out first thing in the morning.

and by first thing i mean, my alarm starts screaming at 4:49am.

oh how i love that sound

now it’s taken me a long time to get to be a morning person. remember those college years when 4:49am was the time you were getting in to bed?

i can’t tell you how many times i’ve run into my brother, as i’m leaving to go to the gym, and he’s coming home from being out with jim. atleast we can share breakfast together? his drunken cream cheese & dorito bagel and my protein packed bowls of glory

i digress. as i was saying i wasn’t always the early morning riser. and i want everyone to know (that includes you janetha b (no longer) haha) that you can do it too!

for me there is no better way to start the day then drenched in sweat. it gives me energy for the day, makes breakfast oh-so rewarding and makes the nights so much more glorious knowing you can come home and enjoy your dvr-ed episodes of the housewives.

so i thought i would share a few tips on how i get myself up & at ‘em that early

1. put your workout clothes out! i know i know this is everyone’s first tip. but i’m telling you it helps! i mean who in the world wants to pick out an outfit before the clock hits 5. not me. i can’t even tell you how many times i’ve walked into the light of the gym mirrors and thought to myself “what in the bloody world were you thinking!” well you weren’t julie.

2. if it’s cold out sleep with socks on. this is a major thing in the winter. believe me! if you have cold feet there is no way you are leaving your warm bed. so wear socks.

3. find an early class! two days out of the week i hit spin at 6am. it’s two less days i have to think about a workout and it’s two days where someone else can motivate me & push me to burn those cals.

4. which brings me to my next one. plan your workouts! if you wake up with a plan then you’ll go. if you don’t have a plan or any idea what you want to do, then odds are you’ll be that gym go-er who just roams for 45 minutes not really sure what to do. and who wants to wake up that early just to roam?

5. invest in a dvr. it’s worth it. that way you can go to bed early, wake up and workout, and come home from work or school and watch last night’s shows! there i solved all of your “but i’ll miss the housewives of new york finale” excuse ;)

6. no excuses. just get up. just go. if you think about it you’ll not go. if you play with your phone, you’ll skip out. just get up. if you got to bed early, then you’re not tired, so don’t say you are. just go.

7. the most important tip i can share with you is make it worth your while. and what do i mean by that? well, picture this at the end of your workout and how good it will taste when you come home all sweated out

so with that being said, if you’re thinking you want to workout early tomorrow morning just get up and go! we’ll be there together ;)

and if you do get up and go, well make sure to stop by julie golean and let me know!

best wishes to the gorgeous newlyweds :)

I’m an early morning riser and recently something that helped me was not pressing snooze on the alarm. Think of it this way:

1. If you had a good sleep, 5-10 more minutes is not sufficient to bring that bliss back.

2. If you had a horrible sleep or no sleep, 5-10 more minutes will not make up for it.

Like you said, just go! :)

My favorite breakfasts are eggs with toast and fruit, or oatmeal with fruit, nut butter and/or coconut oil

I <3 Julie! She is awesome. I couldn't agree more with finding an early morning class! It makes it nice to have something to look forward to and an instructor/classmates their to help motivate you. I personally love morning workouts

I can totally understand the sock-to-bed thing. It sounds so simple and obvious but oh my goodness is it ever true!

I used to be an early riser, and somehow it got away from me. I’d like to try again, but it’s hard because sometimes my fiance is out sailing (work!) until 11pm! So I almost HAVE to stay up, or I don’t see him :(

That being said, a smoothie is always refreshing on an early morning :D

I’ve been waking up early for years, the morning is by far the best time to get things done. Before everyone else is up & stressed, I’ve done most of my chores. I just love morning.

great post julie p! i can’t wait to checkout your blog too :D

1. SPACE HEATER!! I’ve got one in my dressing area, turn it on FULL BLAST (and point it straight at myself) on cold mornings – reduces my workout prep-time in half!

2. ‘Oat dust’ & protein shake Great to eat on the run. just rip open a packet of instant oats and consume with spoon. So quick it’s ridiculous!

Love you Julie! Awesome tips! Your breakfast looks even more orgasmic when it is 20 times bigger!! I’ve been very good at waking up early these days because I sign up before hand so I have no choice but to go! A workout buddy really helps too!!

Hi Julie,
I’m a first time reader of your blog…I really needed to see the post about early morning workouts. Could you possibly share the details on that delicious looking bowl of breakfast yumminess?
Be well,
