hello! happy friday :)
today’s post is going to be a bit out of the ordinary.. then again, when am i ever ordinary? don’t answer that.
i wouldn’t want to slack off and not give you guys some of my most recent meals & moves, so i will quickly show you the details and then i will jump right in to this special installment of flashback friday, which is what i am really excited about today! and last but not least, i will announce the giveaway winner!
meals lately have been pretty typical.
mighty maple chocolate protein oats
1/3 cup oats, 1 serving chocolate EAS protein powder, 1 egg white, 1 TB mighty maple
345 calories, 11g fat, 27g carbs, 38g protein
tuna wrap & green bell peppers + hummus
1 tumaro’s garden vegetable wrap, 1 can albacore, 1 TB nayonaise, 2 tsp dijon mustard, sprouts & lettuce.
bell peppers & sabra on the side.
260 calories, 8g fat, 18g carbs, 29g protein
somehow my snacks missed the camera’s eye, that is why i love thursdays.. i don’t worry about photos. i had a plain chobani yogurt+deep chocolate vitatop pre-workout and i had a green protein smoothie post-workout. AND I GOT MY HAIR DONE. wooooooo!
last night was crock pot night and i fixed chicken masala which is a type of indian curry.
into the pot went two boneless skinless chicken breasts (cubed), a large broccoli crown (chopped), half a head of cauliflower (chopped), a small red onion (diced), half a bag of baby carrots, one jar of trader joe’s masala sauce, 14.5 ounce can of diced tomatoes and enough cumin & curry powder to make you blush.
this made four servings and each serving has 245 calories, 5g fat, 25g carbs and 25g protein
i served mine over garbanzo beans marshall ate his over potatoes and had some naan on the side.
the addition of the garbanzo beans (1/2 cup) upped this dinner to 355 calories, 8g fat, 42g carbs & 31g protein.
it was super delicious. randy and penny didn’t get any.
this morning i had a little bit different breakfast:
alternative bagel brand english muffin topped with 1 TB whipped cream cheese + 1 TB sugar free raspberry jam
4 egg whites + 1 TB heinz reduced sugar ketchup.
i used to always eat english muffins with cream cheese and jam on them! i forgot how much i love this pairing. if you haven’t tried it, i really suggest you do. jam and cream cheese pair excellently together.
all together: 215 calories, 4g fat, 22g carbs, 24g protein
i had a great lower body workout yesterday. i have intense DOMS in my hamstrings already.. but not in my quads. i am not sure what is going on but my quads have not had DOMS in weeks. i am needing a change and i thought this workout would do it since i not only did extra quad exercises, but i also did different ones and lifted heavier than normal.
i know, i know, not having DOMS is NOT a sign that you didn’t work hard enough.. but i am masochistic and i really love to have a nice case of DOMS in my quads!
i took a cue from dawn’s post and utilized the smith machine yesterday:
[source.]
during my first body for life challenge, i did all of my quad and chest exercises on this machine. i am not sure how i got away from the smith machine.. i think i ended up opting for free weights instead.. but i really am able to squat heavier weights with the smith machine (since i don’t have a spotter and the squat rack scares me if i am all alone!)
anyway, here is the workout (i’ve linked to the moves where possible):
- warm up 0.5 miles / 1.0 incline on treadmill (4 minutes)
quads:
| move | reps | weight |
| smith squat | 12 @ 10 @ 8 @ 6 @ 12 @ |
105# 115# 125# 135# 105# |
| smith split squat | 12 (each leg) @ | 95# |
*i did 25 weighted (10#) ball crunches between the first four sets for a total of 100 crunches.
hamstrings:
| move | reps | weight |
| smith deadlift | 12 @ 10 @ 8 @ 6 @ 12 @ |
45# 55# 65# 75# 50# |
| stability ball ham curls | 20 @ | body weight |
*i did 30 seconds of butt kicks between the first four sets for a total of 2 minutes of butt kicks.
calves + extra quad work:
| move | reps | weight |
| calf raise on sled | 12 @ 10 @ 8 @ 6 @ 12 @ |
120# 140# 160# 180# 120# |
| single leg calf raises on sled | 20 @ | body weight |
*i did single leg (quad) leg press between the first four sets @ the same weight as the calf raises and the same # (so for the set with 12 reps @ 120#, i followed the calf press set with a set of single leg presses~ 12 each leg, and so on for the set of 10, 8 and 6.)
abs:
- 100 oblique twists w/ 10#
- 100 crunches on decline bench
- 40 reverse crunches on decline bench
finished with:
- 10 minutes @ level 8 on stairmill, facing different direction every minute
- 5 minutes stretching
total time: 1 hour, max HR: 168, ave HR: 135, calories burned: 325
i have HIIT on the agenda tonight. not sure which one i will pick but you can see my various HIIT ideas on my moves page :)

flashback friday!!
as you all know, tuesday marked my one year of blogging here on meals & moves! i have had a hay day looking back at my first few posts. they were pathetic. i laugh at the ridiculous photos i was taking and posting.. i am not sure i would want to eat the items with such horrible photos and preparation methods!
needless to say, both my photography skills and cooking skills have come a long way in this past year. i have learned several things from books, from magazines, from blogs and just from good old trial and error!
for this week’s flashback, i thought it would be fun to compare my eats in a then vs. now format along with my comments about the comparison. i ate LOTS of the same foods, obviously, since i’ve been doing body for life for so long now, but boy.. have my photos and cooking methods advanced.
enjoy the flashback!
protein oats
then:
now:
comments:
um, did i really used to eat that top bowl of moosh? i used to make my protein oats in the microwave and added the protein powder before cooking, so the powder would cook up into a weird, rubbery substance and i called it breakfast. now i cook my oats on the stove top, add the powder after they are cooked and make sure to top them with something delicious every time! the only good part of the “then” photo is the copious amounts of cinnamon ;) the backdrop in the “then” photo was the kitchen stove. in the “now” photo it is my boss’ nice hardwood floor. UPGRADE! also, notice i no longer use disposable bowls. i went green!
salad
then:
now:
comments:
same dish! but much better photo. i started using place mats. and no longer use the dingy kitchen table for my backdrop! these salads are very similar. my salad palette has not really changed. i always throw together whatever i have on hand and call it good!
greek yogurt mess
then:
now:
comments:
i still utilize the yogurt container whenever i can. i like to save a dish. the real difference here is the photography. the greek yogurt messes are practically the same, but the second one is WAY more appealing due to the photographs. i would never look at the “then” photo and say “oh yum, i want that!”
hummus & veggies
then:
now:
comments:
again, i used to use styrofoam plates.. and here i use a glass plate. also, my veggie photos are more up close and personal, which i believe is way more appealing to the eye! the hummus is sabra brand in both photos. love it. you can definitely see my
egg scramble
then:
now:
comments:
natural light. an actual plate. a place mat. much better! the “then” photo has ham and laughing cow in the eggs. the “now” photo has ham, laughing cow, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, onions and avocado. UPGRADE!
protein shake
then:
now:
comments:
i started adding spinach, xanthan gum and guar gum to my smoothies. MUCH better. also, i try to use better backgrounds and natural light since smoothies are really just so boring to look at.
wrap
then:
now:
comments:
again, no more styrofoam plate! and i cut my wraps in half now to show the cross section instead of holding them up with my hand. i try not to show my hands in photos ever, if possible. obviously the photo quality is ten million time better..
protein pancakes
then:
now:
comments:
um. would you even want to eat the “then” photo?! haha. i use the same protein pancake recipe, but now days i have a few i rotate through. this “now” photo is a batch of allie’s low carb pancakes. i think i learned a thing or two about presentation.
out to brunch
then:
now:
comments:
well.. which would you rather eat? i think the photos speak for themselves!
stir fry
then:
now:
comments:
this one is pretty bad! i think it may be the most drastic one of the whole bunch!
BBQ action shot
then:
now:
comments:
i learned a thing or two about angles of photos. and how to make things look appealing. i remember the “then” BBQ like it was yesterday.. and it was delicious! it just didn’t look like it ;)
penelope jane
then:
now:
comments:
i chose these photos because i thought this was funny and random. i took a photo of penny last night and she is in the exact same position as the flashback photo. some things never change. except for my roommate now has a much more tasteful couch than the old one ;) you may notice, she is laying on randy’s butt.
randy dog
then:
now:
comments:
well. not much has changed. he is still a lazy pup.
marshall
then:
now:
comments:
clearly nothing has changed here!
last but not least.. i want to flashback to my first five commenters..
- momma b. was my very FIRST commenter! on this post she said:
Wow girl, you are wearing me out, but I LOVE your new site!! So informative and I love the photos of your food. I will for sure copy some of your meal ideas, I am SO in a rut……..apples, chili, string cheese, water, vitamines, chicken……..you know a real RUTTTTT!
Love you to pieces!! - hayley c. was my SECOND commenter! on this post she said:
Ok I am officially addicted to your blog…!!! You take really good pictures, too and now I want to make the spice muffins along with the omelet and boursin cheese. :) On another note, do you count calories? I know you haven’t been able to work out recently so I’m wondering if you’re just eating your BMR? I listen to Jillian Michaels’ podcasts and she’s always telling girls to eat whatever their BMR is – and that’s WITH working out. I’m 5’3″ and ~120lbs but lookign to lose 5-10. However, I always think that eating my BMR (which is around 1350) seems a little low. Just curious to know what you do because I think we are similar in height?
- danica p. was my THIRD commenter! on this post she said:
It is sooooo hard to resist those samples at Costco! I have found the only way I can is to put gum in my mouth and not walk near the sample ladies. Great job at getting picks of it all. I am with you completely on ice cream – if there was a way to sustain on it, I would! Thanks for stopping by my blog – your blog is entertaining :)
- coco q. was my FOURTH commenter! on this post she said:
thanks for stopping by my blog so I can find yours. I’m really impressed by your before and after pics! AWESOME work!!! :D
- em h. was my FIFTH commenter! on this post she said:
hey girl,I just found your blog and I am lovin it! You seem like a really fun girl, just thought I’d stop by and say hey! hope your having a great day.
what is pretty stellar about this is that everyone listed above still comments or i am still in touch with! (the first four still comment, and i keep in touch with em via facebook because she doesn’t blog anymore) i have even met danica and coco in person at the foodbuzz festival last november! a few of my other first commenters who i still keep in touch with include HEABs, k, ashley, susan and lauren.
ATTENTION to the TEN gals listed above! (mom, hayley, danica, coco, em, HEABs, k, ashley, susan & lauren!) as my way of thanking you for being my first readers and STILL reading even though i posted such hideous photos (see above) i would like to send you a little gift! send me your mailing address ASAP!! (mom, danica, k, coco, ashley & susan~ i have yours if it has not changed) xo.
other differences i noticed between a year ago and now:
- i used to separate the meals posts from the moves posts, how inconvenient. now, i do them in the same post but use the “meals” and moves” headings to designate their places.
- i never had a set schedule of posting. i would just post in the middle of the day with no coherence and no consistency. now, i post once a night, documenting the whole day at once. hooray for order.
- um.. people actually read my blog!
- there is more advice, information and interaction in my blog now. before, it was just “this is what i ate, this was my workout”. now days, there is a lot of interaction from you guys and i try to make my posts a lot more informative!
- i introduced flashback friday and waffle wednesday which have both caught on like a wildfire!
things that haven’t changed a bit:
- i still celebrate national food holidays <—this post is from a year ago today! happy national cherry cheesecake day!
- i still ramble and use ridiculous words
- i still do body for life style workouts
- i’m still obsessed with HIIT
- i still enjoy free day!
- i still create baked goods with protein powder
- i basically eat all the same stuff!
WOW.
a year ago i never thought i would be where i am today. yes, i am engaged, going back to school, a new home owner and a lot more mature…
but there is a whole other aspect in my life that i NEVER expected to exist. i am a blogger. and i like it. a lot. i have made what seems like hundreds of friends, had SO many adventures and opportunities (food festivals, culinary tastings, etc), i have excelled in both my pohtography and writing skills and i have had the time of my life. i often try to remember what i did with my spare time before i knew about healthy living blogs. i mean.. we are talking hours here, people. i don’t even know what i used to do. watch tv?
granted, blogging and blog reading takes up a huge chunk of my time.. but i wouldn’t have it any other way :)
did you think i forgot the giveaway winner?!
holy crud, i had a lot of entries. 327 to be exact. you guys floored me with the amazing comments~ thank you!
entry #170!
CONGRATS sarah!! send me your address and i will ship out the loot :)
Qs~
1. what differences do you see in your workout habits and what you eat between a year ago and today?
2. what has blogging / blog reading taught you?
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! THANKS FOR READING!

gah, I didn’t remember that it ended so soon so I didn’t get my extra entries in. oh well!
You really have improved on your pictures/presentation a lot. I should work on that myself!
I have a lot more variety in my workouts now than I did a year ago. Bikram, pilates, strength training, spinning vs. running running running running.
Blogging has introduced me to all sorts of new foods and that healthy doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, healthy is quite simple; buy REAL food. I’ve also learned to stop worrying about just calories but worry about what’s actually making up those calories!
such a fun post! I love looking back at my old eats…a LOT is the same. I was eating oats with Greek yogurt this time last year (FYI, the Quaker instand raisin, date and walnut oatmeal with Fage and eaten cold tastes like cookie dough). I also ate the same tuna salads I still eat. Oh, and felafel! I don’t eat pumpkin banana oatmeal anymore for some reason, and you just reminded me that I haven’t made Kath’s banana baked oatmeal forever.
Blogs have taught me so much when it comes to food,, nutrition, cooking…and just all-round great advice and support. I can always count on bloggers to have words of wisdom on crappy days.
i’m usually just a reader/lerker (not going to look up how to spell it right) but 1. no one else i know loves cream cheese and jam on bagels/english muffins but i do! 2. i am a serious lover of doms and love when i have it. 3. i loved this flashback friday because i’ve been reading your blog for about six months soo it’s funny to see how much it’s changed!
The differences in what I eat today and a year ago from today are COMPLETELY different! I am more addicted to gum :S but my eating habits have improved significantly and I owe it all to you and the blog world (but mostly you)! You have inspired me to eat healthier and I honestly haven’t craved anything sweet for a long time! I think it’s because I eat breakfast cookies and yummy greek yogurt and peanut butter and vitatops everyday! That’s dessert enough!
I think I explained it well enough above =)
Have a great weekend!
best flashback friday ever. loved this post, you’ve come a long way baby!
1 – ha! a year ago i didn’t exercise at ALL, now i’m a crazy gym rat. i had started my weight loss journey, but was just trying to not eat “junk” – mostly that was lots of lean cuisines and fiber one products.. which i now consider junk!
2 – blog reading has taught me a TON! when i stopped seeing my trainer and was on my own, the blogworld helped me step up my game immensely and i have way better results than i did when i had the trainer! i’ve learned about gobs of delicious foods and lots of great workouts.. i love blogs – and you loverly bloggers ;)
A year ago was when I started losing weight again so I was trying to be very careful with my food intake. BUT I didn’t exercise as much as I do today, so I’m a little bit more relaxed with my eating, which is much better. ;)
Blog reading has taught me a lot of stuff, I actually think that if I hadn’t start reading blogs and info online I would’ve never lost the 60 pounds I did. :)
Ah, love the comparisons between last year and now. The photos are much better ahah practice makes perfect!
Have a great weekend Janetha!
True story…your comment last night about putting me in your favorites/will not “mark as read” folder totally made my night. And I have to tell you what I do with your blog: I save it to read right before I go to bed! I won’t read it until I’m all snuggled under the covers with my iPhone. Kind of creepy, right? I haven’t even read this post yet because I want to save it for tonight :)
Have a good weekend!
Ooooh, I was just about to do a year-ago flashback and saw this and had to come over! Your photography has improved A LOT. Did you get a new camera? It looks like some of the old ones may be a camera phone? Phone camera? Whatever.
Quads. Women are naturally imbalanced in their legs, and their quads are stronger than their hamstrings. Maybe this explains the lack of DOMS? You gotta work them extra hard to feel the burn? If anything though, it’s good to work your hamstrings and adductor muscles to even out that imbalance. This is my excuse to get out of doing lunges anyways ;)
I’m going to send you my mom’s address! I’m blowing this joint as soon as work is over and shacking up at her place until I move to the city.
1. I eat more. I workout more. I have a lot more “treats” and “cheat meals” because I have a lot better balance :)
2. Ohgosh, it’s taught me that I should spend my time doing things I love, and to go after life with more drive and passion. It’s taught me who my real friends are and strengthened real-life relationships. It’s helped inspire people in the world, and helped inspire me to be a better person. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
Okay, off to type up a FBF post. Love ya to bits Janeeeetha!!!
Hey girl, love the flashback tonight. Isn’t it funny how much our eats can change over the course of a year? Oh, and apparently hamstring DOMS are in the air b/c mine are KILLING ME. My eats have most definitely changed and so have my workouts. I do less cardio and more/heavier weights now. Blogging and reading blogs has actually taught me a great deal, so much more than I expected. I love all the inspiration out there!
omg, i loved the “then and now”!! hmm, i almost wish i had a better record of such things so i could do a then and now :) have a fabulous weekend!
I can’t believe how much your pictures have changed! I look back at my old posts and my photos look AWFUL. So funny!
Loveee the then vs now photos!!
Cute post :) I laugh looking back at some of my blog posts. I haven’t gotten much more “professional”, but I feel like my posts at least have a lot more direction now. I love that you combine your meals and moves…mostly cause I love to see both. And veggies and hummus is always delicious. Love homemaking hummus but have you tried the cilantro jalapeno hummus from whole foods? holy amazing batman. Enjoy the weekend!
I wish I had found your blog a year ago! I’ve only been reading for a few months but its been such a great ride =) Also do you have a different camera now because I cannot believe those pictures could have been taken with the same camera!
I’m actually in pretty much the same place as I was last year this time which is pretty disappointing. I’ve been battling an eating disorder and I thought I’d be recovered by now, but reading blogs like yours helps motivate me to truly be healthy.
Which brings me to your second question – I feel like I’ve written this on a bunch of blogs lately but its the truth – you ladies saved my life with your blogs. I only found yours recently (I think from Susan’s) but every time I read a post I feel so much more secure in my decision to strive for health. I’m so excited for all of the wonderful things you have ahead of you this year and you should be EXTREMELY proud of yourself (and not just because you make awesome food and take amazing pictures) I’ve learned so much from your posts and you demonstrate such a healthy lifestyle. Thanks Janetha!
Nicole G
So you have convinced me that I NEED a CrockPot. Pronto.
A year ago, I was running shorter distances and eating a lot more sugary foods I think.
So cool to see the now and then comparison!! I only wish I’d found your blog sooner, you are awesome!!
My blog is getting close to being a year too! And looking back, I used to eat wayyyyy too little for breakfast and lunch and then eat way too much for dinner and snacks later in the day. Not a good balance. Also I ate things like sf/ff pudding, fiber one bars, LOADS of carbs. I’m so much more balanced and I owe it all to food blogs. Your blog specifically has really helped me revamp my diet and I am just loving eating the BFL way. It makes me feel so much more energetic and satisfied.
As for my workouts, I used to do hours of spinning and running, but was disappointed when I didn’t see any results. Now I’m doing more HIIT, weights, and yoga and it has made me feel so much stronger and efficient!! Again, this is all thanks to YOU!!
In addition, my attitude has completely transformed. I used to constantly beat myself up and felt fat. I had much more negative posts and only wanted to be thin. My goals weren’t to be healthy like they are now. I owe this attitude change to everyone in the blogging community!!!!!!!!!! Everyone is so supportive and inspiring!! :)
WOW I feel SO HONORED to get mentioned on your blog! I am seriously so flattered, and I am even happier that I found your blog!! A TON of people commented on my facebook post where I wrote that I ate pumpkin enchiladas and nearly everyone asked for the recipe. I put up a link to your blog and already I know people who’ve become fans of your site! :)
I thought you took good pictures in the beginning, but I can definitely see a huge change in the quality! That is amazing!! You certainly have learned a thing (or two or three or four) about photography. I seriously need to get with the program!
One of the big things that blogging has taught me is that even though I may not “know” a lot of the people who comment on my blog and whom I’ve met through blogging, I’ve still come to value them as friends. I’ve met a couple of people through blogging and I feel as though I’ve made friends for life. I only hope that I have the opportunity of meeting more in the future!
Thank you so much Janetha for starting such a fantastic blog and progressively making it better! I didn’t think it was possible. :)
Janetha! Great post!! I think one of the greatest things about having a blog is being able to go back and view it not only as a diary, but as a workout log, recipe book and photo album – all combined!
I am most definitely going to have to try cream cheese and jam on an English muffin. Sounds phenom.
I am totally the same way about not feeling DOMS when I lift!! I know that I am getting a great weight lifting workout in regardless, but I always feel like I achieved so much more if I feel DOMS the next day!
Thanks for the giveaway – I am seriously so so so so so excited I cannot even contain myself!!
have a good weekend! :)
Love this flashback post ! :) I think the ‘most improved’ now and then photo goes to your protein oat meal. Gotta be honest, when I forst saw the ‘then’, I was thinking… How does one create oatmeal that looks a little like tempeh ? ;P
Happy Fri Miss J!
I’ve got to say, this is the worst possible blog to read right after a work out and before I’ve had a chance to eat! And that stir-fry? Worst. Photo. Evar! Such a fun post even if it did make my stomach growl (and turn…).
Ohhh major congrats Janetha! I looked back at my first few posts the other day and thought exactly the same thing!
You’ve come a long way, baby.
I have started and kept up running in the last year and I’ve also started doing yoga regularly – completely different from where I was a year ago!
My eating habits have been affected massively from reading food blogs! I am experimenting in ways I never thought I would and more excited about food than ever. Yay!
it’s so funny to see how things change over time. love the flashback. anddddd that chicken masala crockpot of love. please save some for me.
love ya lady – happy weekend :)
HEY LOVE!!
okay FIRST of all you MUST show us a picture of your hair!!!
OH MY GAH BEST FLASHBACK EVA!!!!!!!
that was soo cool to see the changes! SUCH a big difference girl!!!
HAPPY WEEKEND <3
Oh these questions are a breeze.
1. I went from doing jack _____ to working out 5x a week. I also climbed out of my fast food, junk food, pizza, burger, ice cream donut coma and now enjoy salads, veggies, fresh fruits, organic products, shakes and all the other delicious and healthy foods you can think of.
2. SO so much! I now take pride in the way my meals look. I love to share them with others and because they LOOK more appetizing, they taste better and make me feel better about my choices. I learned that I am NOT alone in my food and fitness obsessions. I learned that it is NOT crazy to take pictures of anything and everything. I learned new workout moves, new recipes, new cooking methods, new ways to portion out my meals and how to incorporate everything from more protein to more veggies in my diet.
Basically, I learned how the be the healthiest and happiest me possible. Thanks to lovely ladies such as yourself. ;)
Really no difference here, except I may be eating more veggies… ;)
I LOVE flashback Friday- please keep doing them!! :) Such a good idea & it’s good for new bloggers…like myself to see how much a site can improve in a year. Your blog is one of my ‘role model’ blogs- it is awesome :) & your workouts- I can’t get enough of them!!
What a great post! Your photography skills have gotten a lot better LOL!
Make a list today of where you think you will be in a year and bookmark it. Then see how close (or far!) you are from that :D
I love this Flashback Friday! So fun to see how your eats and photography skills have changed. So cute that your mom was your first commenter. I think my mom was my first, too :)
Agreed that cream cheese + jam is the best combination EVER.
One thing that has not changed…..
HOW AMAZING YOU ARE! :)
Haha, yes you are a BLOGGER girl and we love you!! Your blog has come a long way and for the better. Your pics are great, your info is helpful and you are just hilarious and so real. Keep it up!!
And I totally eat cc and jam on english muffins too. Soooo good. ya egg whites and ketchup :) It’s like a little bit of heaven. I probably could eat them everyday!
I have been reading your blog from the get-go and I still love it!!
I love that cream cheese/jam combo on the english muffin- I need to try that!!
I also LOVE your then & now flashback!!
1. I do WAY more yoga now, and don’t run every day- but I feel much better physically now!!
2. Blogging has made me much better at food photography, and encouraged me to be more creative with my meals!! I have also been inspired so much from reading other blogs :)
xo
K
i loved all the then/now pix – what a difference a year makes, indeed! congrats again on your year of blogging.
Great post! I need to get on the ball and see what these national food “holidays” are b/c I keep missing them!
As blogger, it has opened me up to a whole new world of ingredients, meals, snacks and such. Plus, I really dig the positive energy that other foodies or people who are focused on their healthy may not give out. A year ago, I weighed less but was in a bad relationship, mundane lifestyle and generally unhappy. I am not at my happiest at this time but am happier, have quit smoking, quit the gym and having better workouts on my own that are now focused on a variety of things such as strenght training, yoga, running, etc. instead of just mindlessly slaving away on the elliptical.
AWWWWW I LOVE YOU!!!! I am so thankful that I “met” you through blogging. Now we just need to make it happen furreal.
I cringe whenever I look at my first posts. I hadn’t found my voice yet. And the pictures? Can we say “flash”! So funny!
Isn’t blogging one of the best things that’s ever happened to you? I certainly feel that way. It’s taught me to DO ME. Ya know?
I hope you have a faaaab weekend!! Love you! xoxoxo
nice reflective post! and the photos are adorable.
Apparently I haven’t learned much; I feel like my photos look like your befores! A good camera is moving higher and higher on my b-day list :D
LOVED this post Janetha!! I love photography, my dad is a photographer (believe it or not, i actually do love it, despite my pictures on my blog, but thats laziness and still not having my camera back!) I will get all arty one day…. ha!
Have a grrrrrrreat weekend! x
Ahh I love the differences!! I’m still at the stage where I’m trying to figure out what works best for me in blogging, but it’s hard to find good light in my dingy apartment so I can’t wait to go home for the summer!!
A year ago I was still eating meat, and a ton of processed crap like Lean Cuisines and 100 calorie packs. I’m so glad I’ve finally learned to enjoy REAL food!! Blogging has taught me so much, but mostly that it’s OKAY TO EAT. Eating is fun, and it’s possible to look good on a real-food diet.
Hope you have a great weekend love!!
Great post. I appreciate the tips on improving my photos. Thanks!
Wow, I always thought your pictures were good from the get-go…and hahaha @ the old protein oats! I always made mine that way too and somehow convinced myself that the rubbery texture was edible! I remember one of the recipes that you posted towards the beginning of your blog that is still one of my very favorites to this day…. the flank steak pinwheels….oh holy yum. Great to see how far you’ve come in a year! I’m now motivated to re-start my blog….again…and maybe this time next year I can have a b-word celebration!
Sarey
what a great post! you are such a generous blogger :) congrats on your achievements this past year, and happy pigs in a blanket day! (personally, I’m more excited for zucchini bread day tomorrow!)
Hehe I love this post! Especially the difference in quality of pictures of the before and afters. :)
I missed the giveaway, but still congrats on one year Janetha! Oh how I am glad to be one of your hundred friends. Can’t wait till I meet you one day!
YAY! I just love the smith machine-it really helps me prefect my form while I build strength!
I did some of those spilt squats this morning!!!
Please ladies, do NOT use the smith machine for squats, one of the worst things you can do for your body in the gym. I’m a personal trainer from the UK…

There’s many more examples of why not, if you search around…

It is fun to look at your old eats and see how stuff has changed. I probably work out the same as I did a year ago, but I have been trying to incorporate more strength training into the mix.
Blog reading has taught me that there are lots of other people like me in the world. Most of my friends are not regular exercisers and they would rather sleep off a hangover than go run a race. It’s just sort of reassuring to find other people who like healthy food and exercise like I do. Also, I learned how to take much better pictures!
I thought you had been blogging forever!
I just took down my smith machine :( He’ll be back up soon!
I use mine for shoulders and bench press as well.
Randy hasn’t changed much ;)
this was so fun to read!!! Your blog has definintely come a long way…I hope mine continues to grow just as yours has. I know maybe not quite as much, but hey, any growth is good. :)
Awwww – lovely post, Janetha!
Delicious eats and terrific pics and comparisons :)
Have a wonderful Sunday!
Brazilian XOXO´s,
Gabriela
i loooooved those then and now pics…kyle likes some of the thens better, ha! that stir fry one was a big difference. i am curious now to look back at my own older ones…love the new layout btw
I can totally see how you’ve evolved this year through picture comparison! it’s amazing.. when i look back, i feel the same way. :)
I think blog world gave me soooo much, it’s a special spot where I can share my thoughts/concerns/happy moments and good food. If it was not because I have to blog, I might be eating much less varieties of food than I do now! ;)
Mmm that Chicken Masala looks really good! I love Indian food!!
What a fun post! It’s so much fun looking back and seeing how things change. :D
And I was awww’ing my way through the pup shots….too cute!
ah you just inspired me to go check back to some of my older posts. Now I really wish I hadn’t. **embarassing**, wow – my photo skills were god awful. The worst party is, I definitely remember thinking I was so legit. Oyeee.
“people actually read my blog” .. ha! samesies. I was just looking back and I swear through the first month I think I had one reader on a good day, though I would still start my posts with “hey everyone! love you guys!”. I’m so cool.
thank goodness you and I united in the past year. life without my jay jay baby? oh god, can’t even imagine anymore. ’twas fate, I think. love you!!
Cool to see the changes! Congratulations on keeping it up — and on the amazing photograph improvement!
Dude, I read your blog before this blog. I just never commented. I didn’t start commenting on blogs regularly until 2 months ago. ;-) If I remember right that blog was even private and I asked (b/c I knew you from tracker) if I could be invited. My memory is not so great so maybe it wasn’t private at all.
My food has not changed that much from a year ago. My workouts structure has not changed much but now I use mostly kettlebells. I also rarely do HIIT cardio on machines anymore. Instead, I spar in taekwondo, do sprints, or run dunes but mostly rely on kettlebells for my cardio training.
I think blogging is helping my photography too. I’m not a great photographer by any means but it does help me to be more conscious about my pictures. I even pulled out our SLR and a good lens a couple of weeks ago. Brent does photo shoots occasionally for his media company so we have a nice camera I was just too lazy to use it. It has really helped and been fun to use.
HEY beautiful loveee!
wow wow the look back is eye-opening for sure! you have new mad camera skills lady!! yes I want to eat everyyyything you photographed! :)
1) I just looked back at a post from one year ago…my eating styles have changed soooo much (my life is no longer ALL SWIMMING)…no more Wheat/Gluten, smaller/more frequent meals, LOTS of fresh produce!
2) Blogging has taught me that everyone is perfectly UNIQUE and DIFFERENT! No 2-things work for everyone, and that I am a crazy cardio-er!! hahaha…I thought I was normal…nope! :)
~LOVEEEEEE you amazingly sweet chica!
-hope you’re having a FAB weekend!
~xoxo!
Blog reading has taught me sooooo many things and the first and most important of them all is that there are tremendously health alternatives to all the icky bad for you food that tastes scrumpcious!!! My workout and eating habits have changed for the best and worst. Last year I decided to run a half marathon and I started training and I completed it in October 2009. However, in January 2010 I ended up retearing my meniscus and had my third knee surgery where they removed 80% of it and has resulted in the elimination of ANY high impact activities from my life forever!!!!!
hahaha this was awesome. i love love love seeing the picture comparisons! i do that ALL the time now and look back to see what’s up with what i was doing last year. and my food and pictures look ridiculously gross. like almost inedible? hahaha
i’ve just started to fall head over heels with smith too! it’s so great for squats and i also love it for deadlifts! because i can focus more on squeezing my glutiles ;)
stay cool mama ;)
I just had to laugh about your before pictures being on paper plates and now you use real plates! Holy shit, I look back at some of my early pictures that I thought looked good at the time – too funny!
Hope you are having a great weekend!
long comment ahead:
1 TB nayonaise, 2 tsp dijon mustard, sprouts & lettuce = just that is what i would do. found the red fat veganaise in the refrig case of WF’s and girl, GET IT. It BLOWS nayonaise away. blows away.
The jam/cream cheese, that would be skylar’s fave thing to have on a bagel at starbucks when scott takes her on the daddy/daughter date every week
the crockpot. totally the opposite of “high raw” but i want one. the one thing i notice you never post about is sodium. clearly you have no issues with it…but i do! I could never ever eat TJ’s masala sauce or salsa in crockpot recipes, etc b/c it would take my body a week to detox from the salt!
all the FB food pics. the stir fry one is pretty bad. And sadly, it’s what I see on so many blogs. I think you should also refer to this post to newbies who need food photog 101 :)
Love this post girl..and your workout info, i actually read that now and know what it means!
xo
Loved seeing your before and afters! Such a great idea. It’s always good to look back and reflect and see how much you’ve grown! Go Meals & Moves : )
you have most definitely come far in your blogging! I always appreciate how beautiful your photos are now! I wish I had the time and motivation to put into my blog right now, but unfortunately I don’t think that’ll happen for a while—and that’s ok, I can just keep enjoying yours in the meantime!
What a fun post! Congrats on a year+ of blogging. You definitely have a great blog so here is to another year! :D
PS – I’m still not very happy with my photos but I’ve come a long way. And I definitely think my content improved. Just like you – it used to be a lot of “here is what I ate” and now I try to add something a little more inspiring or at least relatable into the mix :)
I LOVED this Flash Back Friday I think the most because I can actually remember those pictures. I think changing cameras helped alot too but I have LOVED watching your site grow and all the changes you’ve made along the way. It really does just get better each and every day :)
You don’t have to send me anything – funny girl! I read because I actually KNOW you and LOVE ya as a person ;) Oh and Jay makes me…..kidding! :D
Yeah to Sarah for winning….I was kinda hoping she would because she was so excited about it LOL.
