in meals

I’m stoked to guest post on Janetha’s Meals & Moves because if you are a regular M&M reader, you:

a) are freakin’ awesome

b) want to move

c) and more importantly, love to EAT!

  • my name: Allie
  • where i live: Although I’m originally from Northern California and nestled down in San Diego for a few years, I now live among the cows in Boise, Idaho. (That practically makes me and Janetha neighbors.)
  • my blog: Pimp My Protein Shake
  • my move: Janetha wanted us to share a move we love. Well, I come from the school of thought of love what you hate. That means that the more you hate it, the more your body might need it. So you’d better start lovin’ it. In that spirit, I love/hate abs with a mat. Abs with a mat is a staple in Forrest Yoga (link opens PDF file). It taps you into your core like nobody’s business…

Innocent yoga mat

halfway there. Well, 1/3 of the way there

Ready to roll

Your yoga mat is now an ab shredder

  • Roll up a yoga mat or beach towel into thirds, lengthwise. Then roll it up like  a sleeping bag.
  • Lie on your back and extend your legs into the air, with your lower back pressed against the floor. Keep your knees slightly bent if your hamstrings are very tight.
  • Tuck the rolled mat snugly against your pubic bone, holding it firmly with your inner thighs.
  • Clasping your hands behind your head with your thumbs hooked behind the base of the skull bones, inhale and then hold your breath as your tilt your tailbone toward the ceiling.
  • While holding your breath, squeeze the mat with your inner thighs and lift through the bottoms of your feet toward the ceiling.
  • Exhale slowly and lift your head and chest (supporting your head and with elbows only about 6 inches apart), pull your abs down toward your spine and press your lower back to the floor.

  • As you inhale, let your head, chest and pelvis come back to the floor.
  • Try a few and see how it feels in your core!
  • my meal: And for the meals? So many meals, so few decent meal photographs…

I particularly adore flatbreads made with chickpea flour. They are low glycemic and packed with nutrition. Here we have a delicious pizza-ish flatbread topped with Aidell’s sausage, cheese, shredded Brussels Sprouts, sliced carrots, cracked free range/local eggs and salt & pepper. Mmmmmmmm…….

Thanks for letting me post while you’re out working on your tan Janetha! Don’t forget your sunscreen…

Hi Allie! What a great idea for the abs move w/ the yoga mat! Love it!

Yikes that ab move looks hard, but are you wearing the cutest headband EVER!!

Your flatbread looks very much like what we order overseas in pizza form: a La Reine- it has an egg on top- very common. When we ask them to do it in the USA they look at us like we’re crazy. Once we asked at this cool place in downtown LA in the arts district, they (as per usual) looked at us like we were crazy, then they did it, then when we went back the next time they said it is now a kitchen favorite of the staff! yay~!

You are da bomb sister! As is Janetha Bean.

Oh. My. God. That flatbread is GORGEOUS!

Hey gals! I love that flatbread. The egg on top is trés français, n’est-ce pas?

I didn’t know you were originally from NorCal! :)

Wow–your yoga mat is so flexible! I am looking into buying a new one and haven’t seen anything that thin. Do you recommend a certain brand/type?

LOVE Allie! And it makes so much more sense now that she is from Cali.. she is a hott beach babe! Nice meal too. A lot of people don’t know about Allie’s kitchen skills other than her protein shake skills but she’s got both!
