a good day.

in meals

heyyy folks.. hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend.  can you believe august is almost over?  i swear it was just memorial day and now labor day is right around the corner.  what happened to those endless summers when i was a kid… full of swimming pools, the bottoms of my feet blackened by the asphalt and sleeping on the trampoline?  summers keep getting shorter and shorter!  the only upside is that means snow will be here before i know it… and winter is my fave ;)

news flash: peanut butter flavor beat out cinnamon flavor 8 points to 7 points… it was a close call.

today was my “free day”~ which means a day off from exercise and strict body-for-life-style eating… but it was definitely still a busy day!

i started things off with some java

8-22-09 002

and then had something i haven’t had in some time… parfait a la k! which went along with sarah’s breakfast challenge :)

8-22-09 005

1 cup of 0% oikos, 1 bluebran vitamuffin and 1/2 an individual packet of justin’s maple almond butter… ohhh almond butter, it’s been awhile!

8-22-09 007

i went and swooped up my friend and we snagged some iced coffee because it was over 100 degrees today! oy vey~

8-22-09 008

i don’t dig starbucks but i do have about 4 giftcards from christmas to use up, so this was free. can’t beat that.

then it was off to the farmer’s market!

8-22-09 010

best part about the farmer’s market, in my opinion, is the abundance of pups!!! i was in doggie heaven on earth.

tried some hummus but to be honest, the stuff i make at home is better!

8-22-09 011

this may gross some—or a lot of you out.. but i got penny and randy some pig snout treats..

8-22-09 012

and i also got some basil, rainbow kale, zucchini, squash, cucumbers, bell peppers, peaches, tomatoes and apples

8-22-09 021

we also paid my friend cj a visit at the fish booth, his parents own the best fish market in the SLC, you may recognize him from my thai class post.  he knew i was taking his photo ;)

8-22-09 015

my friend snagged some flowers~ (see her rockin’ the reusable bag i got from stonyfield’s)

8-22-09 014

after the market we went to one of my favorite places to eat.  i once ate here 24 times in one month and got the same thing every time (grilled cheese and tomato soup)

8-22-09 016

today i got half of a turkey sandwich sans mayo & cup of tomato soup~

8-22-09 019 8-22-09 017

the more sprouts the better!

8-22-09 018

i love this soup, big chunks of tomato

8-22-09 020

i went home and gave the dogs their treats which they devoured promptly…

8-22-09 028 8-22-09 029

and i celebrated national eat (half) a peach day

8-22-09 031

marshall was hungry so we stopped at a greek spot and he ate this gyro~ i took a photo to embarrass him…

8-22-09 033

and i had a bite because they have the goodness when it comes to tzatziki…err.. however you spell it.

then marshall and i went to paper heart~

Paper-Heart-Movie-

during the movie i had some more iced coffee

8-22-09 034

and some popcorn~8-22-09 035

cute movie! see it. dare you. michael cera has a cute sense of humor.

we did some hanging out and nothing really substantial happened between the movie and dinner, but dinner was definitely something worth talking about…

indian cuisine.

marshall and i went to a spot called a taste of india with a couple of our friends…

8-22-09 038

marshall and i split two dishes..something old and something new:

chicken tikka masala<—always order that

tandoor roasted chicken cooked with tomatoes, bell pepper, onions and cream sauce

8-22-09 040

chicken vindaloo<—first time ordering that

spiced chicken cooked with potatoes, onions, tomatoes and a touch of vinegar

8-22-09 039

we ordered it mild but it was still the perfect amount of spicy.  i really can’t imagine what hot would be like…

i had a little of each served over rice~

8-22-09 041

along with some tandori roti (clay oven baked teardrop shaped whole wheat flatbread)

8-22-09 042

it didn’t look whole wheat, but when i tasted marshall’s regular naan i could tell the difference big time.  the whole wheat flatbread was much better!

mmmm. i love indian food. the end.

and now we just finished three episodes of dexter season 3… the killing parts give me mega anxiety!!!  even though i know it is not real…

today is also national spumoni day so i had about 4 bites of this goodness…

meals 090

meals 091

okay, so i love indian food and ice cream.

good free day, not too crazy… just perfect.

well no rambling from me, i have had a great “rest day” and look forward to eating clean and working out tomorrow.

oh, i still got my gallon of water in! holler.

Qs

1. how spicy do you like your food? i like some spice but not to the point where the spiciness overpowers the flavor of the food.

2. what was the highlight of your weekend? between the market, the movie & indian food… i can’t decide.

So many cute pups in your last post!
I haven’t been to a farmer’s market in ages. Looks like so much fun. And eating out in twice in a day is so decadent! :)
I’m not a big fan of spicey food. The spiciest I get is adding white pepper to certain Chinese foods, but that’s it. Boring palatte, I guess!

Susan August 23, 2009 at 4:23 am

What the hell is spumoni?? Is that like neopolitan? I don’t know about some of this ice cream stuff… :P

There are a lot of wonderful foods in this post, but I have to admit, Marshall’s gyro slathered in tzatziki is making me drool the most! It’s my soft spot, I can’t help it!

1. Ditto. I love a little heat, but I also like to be able to taste the solid foods in the dish, not just the crazy spiciness.

2. Umm…my weekend has been really boring. I guess going to the “world’s largest garage sale” was kinda fun. If you can see past the fact that it was jam-packed and smelled like BO…

Emily (The Experimentarian) August 23, 2009 at 6:58 am

Susan,
Spumoni is the one of the most delicious ice cream flavors ever ! It’s three different kinds: pink=cherry, brown=chocolate, and green=pistachio. I love it because you don’t have to choose which kind you want, you get all three! I especially like the kind that Janetha had, the Dreyers Fun Flavor–the stats aren’t that bad and it’s super soft and creamy. I hope you get to try it soon :)

Alison August 23, 2009 at 5:06 am

National Spumoni Day? What a lucky coincidence for you!

I did celebrate National Peach Day (tyvm for the heads up!) and I thought it was National Green and Black Dark Chocolate Day. Shoot. Oh wait! That’s today! Oh good, lots of celebrating to do!

Spicy food? Check. I’d say I like my food medium spicy.

Highlight of the weekend? Visiting chickens.

Maya August 23, 2009 at 5:30 am

Michael cera is adorable! I can’t wait to see the movie

balancejoyanddelicias August 23, 2009 at 5:54 am

your saturday was fabulous!!! Love all the groceries you bought!! Farmer’s market is always so fun, I wish they last forever!

I like just a touch of spicy.. my hubby loves really spicy kind.
highlight of the weekend? Steak! yeah~~ I’m been eating too much steak. :D

Kellie August 23, 2009 at 6:10 am

I like my food VERY SPICY… hot hot hot… if it doesn’t make you sweat, it is not hot enough :0)
and the hi-light of my weekend has not happened yet…. I am flying with my husband this afternoon. this is only the second time I’ve gone up with him so hopefully I won’t be too nervous when we get up in the air!

Emily (The Experimentarian) August 23, 2009 at 7:02 am

Yeah, I have to say I didn’t love the monkey hummus, either. I like mine much more. Hey, maybe we should star tour own hummus selling booth! Jk. I have never officially tried Indian food before, and I’ve been dying to hit up the Bombay House on Parley’s. I like my food hot, hot, hot, but there’s a fine line between enjoyable and ruin-the-food. the best part of my weekend? Def my race! Check out my post to see how I did! xoxo

Jenny August 23, 2009 at 7:33 am

i want to see that movie so bad.. it is my dream to marry michael cera — after seeing Juno i’m infatuated <3

p.s. if that shirt your rocking in the first pic goes missing… it wasnt me ;)

ksgoodeats August 23, 2009 at 7:45 am

More cinnamon for me then!! It’s been a while since I had a parfait and your rendition is looking mighty fine!

I had to do a double take at your friends picture because she looks like one of my friends! Weiiiiird!! Everyone has a twin?!

If George Michael Bluth hadn’t decided to do the AD movie, he would be dead to me ;) Glad you liked the movie!

I’ve never heard of spumoni! That sounds like something that happens when you have a cold BUT I’m kind of intrigued!

I like sinus clearing spiciness!

April (Foods of April) August 23, 2009 at 7:58 am

That indian dish looks great! I love my spicy foods!

What in the world is spumoni?? it looks good whatever flavor it is!

We go to the meat market and get our doggies some bones.. they love it!

elise August 23, 2009 at 8:00 am

well done on the parfait. btw, you look absolutely GLOWING and beautiful in that photo.

way to get some good swag from the fair (minus the pig snout, which i will refrain from commenting on…)

i woulda been ALL up in that hummus booth, fo sho!

glad you liked paper heart, i was worried it would just be okish, so maybe ill see it.
indian food and ice cream = perf ending to the day :)

lookingforserenity August 23, 2009 at 8:28 am

The highlight of my weekend was greekfest :) Looks like you had a good weekend too!

Lindsay August 23, 2009 at 9:07 am

Love your puppy pics!

I love spicy food. In most cases, the spicer the better!

The highlight of my weeekdn was shopping yesterday. It was sort of relaxing and I found great stuff

Allie (Live Laugh Eat) August 23, 2009 at 9:17 am

What an fun-filled and food-filled rest day you had! That market looks fabulous!! Haha I can’t believe you ate there 24 times and got the same thing each time! Although grilled cheese and tomato soup hits the spot…every time!

Paige @ Running Around Normal August 23, 2009 at 10:29 am

Wow sounds like a fun-packed day! Love farmer’s markets :) And I’m so jealous of your Indian food! I just had it Thursday, but I want some again already!

Lainie August 23, 2009 at 10:49 am

As always, so many great looking eats! I think we might be twins – check out my breakfast this morning…looks a lot like yours!!!

Niki August 23, 2009 at 11:14 am

J, you inspire me to eat healthier!! I love reading your blog for that reason. I am thinking about going strict 6 days a week then havin an off day too. that worked for a couple years for me and I need to lose 20 plus pounds right now. So I will try it starting NOW.
1. I have started to like my food spicier than before but more like a 3 out of 5 stars at a thai restaurant
2. Best thing all weekend will be tonight when I get off were having a family dinner, but i also bought a bike yesterday so that was awesome!

Cei August 23, 2009 at 12:12 pm

MMMM….all those farmers market goodies look delish

I used to haaate spicy food, but as my palate has matured my tolerence has grown….I do enjoy quite a kick, but I agree…too spicy and it’s just a waste!

The highlight of my weekend was defo my 10k today….I shaved 10 whole minutes off my previous time….I am so chuffed

ps. I realised before, that the day you linked to my blog….was my mardy day, all your lovely readers will be thinkin I am a right moan-a-minute??? I’m not peeps…I promise xxx.

insideiamdancing August 23, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Looks fun! LOOOOOOOOOVE tzatziki and Indian food. Good call. Now I want a gyro.

1. how spicy do you like your food? I used to really like spicy food and have completely lost my tolerance! So strange. Even the cinnamon Lara bar is too spicy for me these days!

2. what was the highlight of your weekend? having coffee with a friend yesterday who I haven’t seen in…um…6 years?!

SHE-FIT August 23, 2009 at 1:35 pm

We can’t give our dog pig snout treats… he gets really angry and vicious when he is around them. Sounds like you had a great day.

Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) August 23, 2009 at 3:59 pm

I am in LOVE with your bassett hound. Way too cute for his own good. :D

I’m not a spicy food person at all. If it weren’t for the fact that members of the family love spicy food, I would never add the hot stuff to my meals. :D I don’t mind a little “kick”, but nothing beyond mild for me! :D

So glad you’ve had a great weekend! Your breakfast looks divine! :D

Meredith August 23, 2009 at 4:18 pm

Yikes that’s super hot! Glad you had an iced coffee to help you cool off!

Emily August 23, 2009 at 4:39 pm

the summer is totally moving way too fast! makes me kinda anxious!

1. I like RIDICULOUS spicy. like, I’ve never tasted anything too spicy for me. and I’ve eaten raw habanero. I put hot sauce or cayenne or crushed pepper on just about everything.

2. highlight of my weekend… hm. chatting with the fam maybe? my little sister just got engaged! I can’t believe I’m old enough to be married, let alone my lil sis.

I haven’t had indian food in too long! may have to happen this week!

have a great sunday night :)

Holly August 23, 2009 at 5:46 pm

everytime i need a janetha fix, there you are with goodness to be had. i don’t even know where to start.

suriously, where has this summer gone? i mean, it’s almost done and i have no recollection of what i did :(. thank goodness for the state fair next weekend – cheese curds here i come!

drool, Indian, drool. my fave cuisine of all-time. ironically, the place i go here is also called “taste of india.” coincidence? i think not.

would you recommend paper heart? i heart michael cera (no pun intended) and was going to go see it. also, YES, SPUMONI! haven’t seen that in a loooooonnnnggg time. glad you had a good balance on your free day :)

(1) no me gusta spicy – i can’t take it when the heat overpowers flavor in a dish!

(2) highlight of the weekend? RELAXING. i dont’t think i’ve done that all summer.

hugs and love,
holly

Sean August 23, 2009 at 5:50 pm

Ahh…fresh fish. It’s so hard to get fresh fish in Georgia, you’re so lucky!

1) I can handle really spicy stuff but for me, enough to have a kick but not too strong that it overpowers all your other senses.

2) Chillin and cooking. School work will probably hit hard starting next week…agghhh.

traveleatlove August 23, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Indian food, markets, popcorn, dogs, how many of my favorite things you crammed into one day!

burpexcuzme August 23, 2009 at 8:10 pm

Girl, I LOVED your first picture of you…that was SUCH a gorgeous pic of you! You should blow it up and frame it ;-)

Oh, and you ordered mild?! Tsk, tsk, disappointed in you, lady! You already know my family and I always order our food AS SPICY AS POSSIBLE. Hee hee!

highlight of my weekend…Hm, hanging out with my new church friends!

inmytummy August 23, 2009 at 8:49 pm

I want to see Paper Heart. Glad to hear it was good.

That Indian food was delicious. I’ve had spicy chicken vindaloo and while it’s good, my tummy was not so pleased with me the next day.

As for your questions, I am a spicy food lover. I go through a ridiculous amount of hot sauce!

The highlight of my weekend was seeing my family and finding my wedding dress!!

Katharina August 23, 2009 at 9:12 pm

What flavor ice cream is that?!

That gyro looks so yummy. I love how fluffy pita breads are for gyros. I feel like they never sell that kind at the grocery store… they’re always this weird pitas with room to stuff vs. using the pita as a wrap.

Your post made me want to go to an Indian restaurant :D And your breakfast looks scrumilydumptious! My friend brews cold coffee (she said it’s actually better for you and lower it’s acidity).. plus it saves her a crap load of money.

Glad your Sunday was a nice one! I hope you have an awesome week, girl.

Angharad August 24, 2009 at 11:35 am

Hey cutie pie! Doing my regular Monday catch-on-a-bazillion-blogs thang…and yours is first (*happy sigh*)
Looks like you had so much fun at the weekend – perfect amounts of good stuff. Love Farmer’s Markets and I like that your friend got some flowers…that’s an idea I will be snagging.
The snout thing is gross.

That soup kitchen place looks too cute and the soup is an awesome color – love!

Indian food!! Holler for both of us consuming that delciousness this weekend! It’s hands down one of my favorite cuisines! Love tikka masala too. I like my food spicy – I hate when everything comes out mild. But also don’t like my taste buds wiped out from pain…

Glad you had an awesome “off” day – ice cream is a banging way to complete it!!

buffmuffy August 24, 2009 at 12:39 pm

ahh you look so pretty girl.
hey have you been making any progress with those pesky inches you wanted to lose?
i love michael cera but i havent heard of this movie.

broccolihut August 24, 2009 at 1:11 pm

Mmm I love me some chunky tomato soup.

lowandbhold August 25, 2009 at 1:33 pm

Your parfait was so much prettier than my weak attempt.

1. Not too spicy, but I love me some hot sauce!
2. Everything! I wish I could be in Virginia every weekend. I love the East Coast.

Kristin August 25, 2009 at 7:46 pm

I can’t believe August is almost over either!! Although I’ve had a mini vacation this past week, I did work alllll summer and I too miss those days of swimming pools and trampolines! Ah, those were the days…

Un food-related, I LOVE your shirt in the “java pic”! Where did you get it?

Food-wise, your breakfast looks to die for, and I love farmers markets and Indian food! I had some today, yum!!

I looovee spicy foods, especially Indian- but I’m with you on too much- the flavor needs to be there!

The hilight of my weekend was wine tasting in Niagra!!!

Lori August 26, 2009 at 4:53 am

Oh wow, your market looks like a lot of fun! I have to agree the dogs are the best part. Lots of people in the city where I live in the States complain about the dogs at the market, but I think it just adds to a fun atmosphere.
